J.B. Short

BLACKSBURG - Mr. J.B. "Pop" Short, 90, of 1370 Deal St. died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain View Baptist Church in Blacksburg, with the Rev. Harold Beam officiating. The burial will be at Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery in Kings Mountain, N.C.

A native of Cleveland, County, N.C., Mr. Short was a son of the late Baxter Short and Hulda Morrison Short. He was the widower of Mamie Barnes Short. He retired from Burlington Industries in Kings Mountain. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Blacksburg.

Surviving are three sons, Bill Short and Loyd Short, both of Kings Mountain, and Thurman Short of Blacksburg; seven daughters, Edith Jenkins, Nell Cook and Mary Leigh, all of Blacksburg, Janice Murphy of Fork Shoals, Kay Falls and Brenda Bowman, both of Clover, and Judy Jenkins of York; his brother, Paul Short of Kings Mountain; his sister, Novella Foster of Kings Mountain; 26 grandchildren; 44 great - grandchildren; and two great - great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.

William Walters

CHESTER - The Rev. William Kelly Walters, 85, of 162 W. Elliott St. died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Westside Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. Mark Chapman officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, the Rev. Walters was a son of the late James Ellison Walters and Rosetta Deese Walters. He was a Baptist minister. He retired from Springs Industries and attended the schools of Lancaster County. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Alma Bowers Walters; two sons, Donald G. Walters of Kingsport, Tenn., and Billy Walters of Chester; his brother, Allen Walters of Lancaster; five sisters, Lillie Bass of Camden, Doris Catoe, Eva White and Mary Ellen Adams, all of Lancaster, and Rachel Teno of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and four great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Elfreida Whitley

KERSHAW - Mrs. Elfreida Long Whitley, 82, of 795 Starcliff Circle died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Hogsed officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Whitley was the daughter of the late Robert Sammie Long and Mammie Bowers Long. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Kershaw. She retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are her daughter, Yvonne Flynn of Lancaster; two brothers, R. S. Long and Everette Long, both of Kershaw; three sisters, Grace L. Pittman, Mae L. Phillips and Lula Phillips, all of Kershaw; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel, and other times at the home of Eric and Yvonne Flynn, 795 Starcliff Circle in Lancaster.

Hershal Woosley

NORTH CHARLESTON - Mr. Hershal Raymond Woosley, 80, died Sunday, Sept.
24, 2000.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Charleston Air Force Base Chapel. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Gardens.

A native of Litchfield, Ky., Mr. Woosley was a son of the late William A. Woosley and Louisa Swift Woosley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring as a master sergeant. He received the Air Medal during the Cold War, serving along the Berlin corridor. He was a crew member during Bay of Pigs and accrued more than 18,000 hours in various aircraft. He flew around the world more than fifty times. Following Air Force retirement, he served as an auto instructor at Middleton High School. He owned Woosley's VW Repair Service on Dorchester Road.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Jones Woosley; four daughters, Sharon W. Callaway of Charleston, Carol W. Frazier of Rock Hill, Rose W. McMahan of Johnson City, Tenn., and Paula W. Franco of Niceville, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight at Stuhr's Greenridge Road Chapel in North Charleston.

Thelma Bolin

SMYRNA - Mrs. Thelma W. Bolin, 89, of 1450 McGill Road died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church in Sharon, with the Rev. James Gable officiating and the Rev. Jody Foster and Dr. Clyde Mitchem assisting.

A native of York County, Mrs. Bolin was a daughter of the late Miles Wallace and Blanche Hope Wallace. She was the widow of John Robert Bolin. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Woodlawn Presbyterian Church in Sharon.

Surviving are her son, Robert E. Bolin of Smyrna; two daughters, Blanche B. McCarter of York and Bennie Ramsey of Charlotte; her sister, Lydia Hipp of Rock Hill; six grandchildren; and four great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home in York.

Geraldine Martin

CHESTER - Mrs. Geraldine Bennett Martin, 59, of 819 Linden Drive died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Barron Funeral Home. The burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Elazer Dunn Bennett and Lottie Norene Melton Bennett. She was a homemaker. She attended Chester County schools.

Surviving are two sons, Herbert Martin Jr. and Michael Lee Martin, both of Chester; her daughter, Wanda McClain of Edgemoor; her brother, Robbie Bennett of Chester; her sister, Joann Jordan of Chester; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Marie Hawkins

CLOVER - Mrs. Marie Rose Hawkins, 85, of 2025 N. Jim McCarter Road died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Kings Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Ballard officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Hawkins was a daughter of the late Bard Rose and Laura Hudson Rose. She retired from American Thread Co. in Clover. She was a lifetime member of Kings Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church in York. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Joy Spreaders.

Surviving are her husband, Church W. Hawkins; two daughters, Wilma H. Ramsey and Pat H. Hope, both of York; three sisters, Lila R. Neelands of Clover and Viola R. Hawkins and Lily R. Blackwelder, both of York; four grandchildren; and seven great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Nevin Carpenter

YORK - Mr. Nevin P. Carpenter, 85, of 1045 Sutton Springs Road died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Kings Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Ballard officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mr. Carpenter was a son of the late Mason Carpenter and Carrie Mauney Carpenter. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a lifelong farmer.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Margaret Love Carpenter; two daughters, Sheila Carpenter of York and Debra Short of Rock Hill; two sons, Robert Wendell Carpenter and Michael Carpenter, both of York; three brothers, A.D. Carpenter of Dallas, N.C., Olaf Carpenter of Bessemer City, N.C., and Alvin Carpenter of Cherryville, N.C.; two sisters, Mazel Smith of Lincolnton, N.C., and Lorene Mace of Cherryville, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton's Funeral Home in York.

Betty Morgan

CHESTER - Mrs. Betty Joe Diggs Morgan, 67, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg, N.C.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Greg Keller officiating.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Morgan was a daughter of the late Wriston Andrew Diggs and Helen C. Robertson Diggs. She was the widow of Daniel C. Morgan Sr.

Surviving are five sons, Daniel C. Morgan Jr. of Greer, David E. Morgan of Camp Lejeune, N.C., Edward B. Morgan of Lexington, Clarence Morgan of Pendleton and Ernest H. Morgan of Louisburg; her sister, Ernestine Everidge of North Myrtle Beach; nine grandchildren; and seven great - grandchildren.

Alice Cincotta

FORT MILL - Mrs. Alice Marie Mayer Cincotta, 81, of 751 Beacon Knoll Lane died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

A Memorial Mass will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, with Father John Giuliani officiating.

A native of Carlstadt, N.J., Mrs. Cincotta was a daughter of the late William Mayer and Marie Schmidt Mayer. She was a widow of Anthony Cincotta. She was a former president of VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.

Surviving are her son, Anthony Cincotta Jr. of Torrance, Calif.; her daughter, Joyce Griffin of Fort Mill; her brother, Edward Mayer of New Jersey; five grandchildren; and two great - grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Philip Neri Catholic Church Building Fund, 292 Munn Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Carroll Eaker

CLOVER - Mr. Carroll G. Eaker, 75, of 143 Lawson Lake Road died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Gastonia, N.C., with the Revs. Chris Christopher and Jack E. Smith officiating. Burial will be at St. Mark's Lutheran Church cemetery in Cherryville, N.C., with military burial rites given by the Last Man Club of Gaston County.

A native of Cherryville, N.C., Mr. Eaker was a son of the late William Hinkle and Vera Alice Crocker Eaker. He graduated from Gastonia High School and attended the University of North Carolina.

He worked at Eaker's Service Station in South Gastonia, N.C. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran in the Pacific theater. He worked in various positions with Witten Supply Co. of Gastonia, Jenkins Metal Corp. of Gastonia, General Fireproofing of Forest City and Foust Textiles of Kings Mountain. He retired as president and operator of Eaker Sales, a textile supplier.

Mr. Eaker was a long - time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Gastonia, where he taught Sunday school and was a former choir member. He was a former member of Gastonia Moose Lodge, where he coached youth athletics. He was a member of Clover Alpine Lodge No. 208 A.F.M., the Scottish Rite Bodies of Charlotte and the Hejaz Shrine of Greenville, where he was a member of the Hillbilly Clan.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Richards Eaker; two sons, C. G. Eaker Jr. of Westminster and William Arthur Vance "Bill" Eaker of Clover; two daughters, Carolyn Eaker Jordan of Franklin, Tenn., and Ann E. Brackett of Seneca; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 805 S. York St., Gastonia, NC 28052.
