Donald Shepherd

CLOVER - Mr. Donald Odell Shepherd, 73, of 495 Green Pond Road died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Clover First Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Stanford officiating.

Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Mr. Shepherd was a son of the late William Donald Shepherd and Beatrice Huffstetler Shepherd.

He was a retired owner of Shepco Textile Machine Business.

He was a member of Clover First Baptist Church and a Mason in Alpine Lodge 208 AFM.

He was a member of Gastonia Elks Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Evatt Shepherd; his daughter, Marcia S. Dickson of Clover; his son, Jeffrey D. Shepherd of Clover; his brother, Gene Shepherd of Clover; two sisters, Frances Richie of Clover and Mable Armstrong of Martinsville, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 117 S. Main St., Clover, SC 29710.

Sophie Yacek

FORT MILL - Mrs. Sophie Piwnicki Yacek, 86, of Huckleberry Hill Road, Canton, Conn., died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 9:15 a.m. Friday at Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Church, Collinsville, Conn.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Collinsville.

A native of Avon, Conn., Mrs. Yacek was a daughter of the late Walter Piwnicki and Bertha Dygowski Piwnicki.

She worked as an assembler at Veeder Root in Hartford, Conn.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, St. Patrick's Ladies Guild, and the AARP.

Surviving are her daughter, Sandra Hamilton of Fort Mill; her son, Thomas Yacek of Avon; two sisters, Helen Grocki of Farmington and Regina Pilitowski of Avon.

Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Sara Roddey

CHARLESTON - Mrs. Sara Jean Phillips Roddey, 73, of 1224 Village Creek Lane, formerly of Rock Hill, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Roper Hospital.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with Dr. William Pender officiating.

Burial will be 1 p.m. at Laurelwood Cemetery, Rock Hill.

A native of Gaffney, Roddey was a daughter of the late Joe Elmore Phillips and Eizabeth McBee.

She was a longtime resident of Rock Hill who moved to Sand Piper Village in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Roddey graduated from Gaffney High School, North Greenville Junior College and Winthrop College. She worked for the Rock Hill school district for 30 years. She taught sixth - grade at Northside Elementary School and history at Rock Hill High School and Northwestern, where she was a social studies department chair. She coached Model United Nations teams and served on the district curriculum committee.

She was a past member and state officer of the Rock Hill Ladies Optimist Club.

She was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church and Pine Lakes Garden Club.

Surviving are her husband, Wylie Roddey of Charleston; her daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Roddey Nichols of Charleston; her brother, Jack Phillips of Spartanburg; and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roddey Scholarship Fund, Rock Hill School District Number 3, Drawer 10072, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

George Gill Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. George Alexander Gill Jr., 81, of 1209 Hermitage Road died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at home.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lee Bryant officiating.

Burial will be private.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Gill was a son of the late George Alexander Gill and Henrietta Lyle Gill.

He graduated from Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Mr. Gill was a retired attorney, a former York County Family Court Judge, a Rock Hill City Court Judge and a U.S. Magistrate Judge.

He was a past member of the Elks Club, the Rock Hill Country Club, the American Legion and a 50-year member of the Kiwanis Club.

He served on the Salvation Army Board.

He was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church, where he served on the building committee.

He was a U.S. Army Judge Advocate during World War II.

Surviving are his wife Maxine Kitchen Gill; his son, George A. Gill III of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Henrietta Gill Lyvers of Lexington and Michealann Gill of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Henrietta Gill Cox of Greenwood and Mary Ann Nanerello of Greenville; and his grandson.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Woodland United Methodist Church Building Fund, 801 Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732 or to Rock Hill Worthy Boys and Girls Camp, Attn: Officer Jim Grice, c/o Rock Hill Police Department, 120 East Black St., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to the charity of one's choice.

Bobbie Deese

LANCASTER - Mrs. Bobbie Jean Catoe Deese, 51, of 1527 Fawn Lane died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at East Side Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joel Rhyner and Donald Tillman officiating.

Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mrs. Deese was a daughter of the late Coleman L. Catoe and Alma Wright Catoe.

She was a homemaker and was a member of East Side Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Winford Deese of Lancaster; two sons, Mark Winford Deese and Jason William Deese, both of Lancaster; her daughter, Tracie Todd of Lancaster; two brothers, Robert Catoe of Jefferson and Jackie Catoe of Lancaster; her sister, Sallie Poston of Lancaster; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, and other times at home.

Memorials may be made to East Side Baptist Church Building Fund, 1180 Garnett Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Dorethra Jones

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Dorethra Jones of 373 Workman St. died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.

Robert Cox

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Mr. Robert G. Cox, 59, of 813 Church St. died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000.

The funeral was Friday, Sept. 22, at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel, with the Revs. Robert Haynes and Barry Philbeck officiating.

Burial was at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.

A native of York County, Mr. Cox was a son of the late Robert Lee and Hester J. Bracket Cox.

He was an employee of Parkdale Yarns in Gastonia, N.C., and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Thrift Cox; two sons, Ronald Cox and Michael Cox, both of Forest City, N.C.; his daughter, Jackie Cox of Forest City; his sister, Margie Harris of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

Harris Funeral Home of Kings Mountain is in charge.

Corey Mayes

SENECA - Mr. Corey Maurice Mayes, 25, of 123 A Morningside Drive died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at the Family Life Center.

Burial will be at Richland Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Oconee County, Mr. Mayes was a son of Claude Bruce and Sarah Goodine Bruce of Seneca.

He graduated from Seneca High School in 1955 and played offensive tackle on the Seneca football team.

He worked for U.S. Engine Valve Company in Seneca and was a member of Richland Baptist Church in Seneca.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his son, Corey Greenlee of the home; his daughter, Mykia Taylor of the home; five sisters, Theresa Mayes, Renea Mayes Rice, Greate Mayes and Calrinda Mayes, all of Seneca, and Racheal Robinson of Townville; his brother, Tommy Robinson of Townville; his grandmother, Elvira Goodine of Seneca; and his fianc?, Camille Greenlee of the home.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 122 Mayes Drive, Seneca.

Johnson Funeral Home is in charge.
