Daniel Starnes

WAXHAW, N.C. - Mr. Daniel H. Starnes, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Union Regional Medical Center in Monroe, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Bethlehem United Methodist Church, with the Revs. David Lawrence and Tom McLean officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Union County, Mr. Starnes was a son of the late Jarvis Odell Starnes and Rebecca Elizabeth Harkey Starnes. He was the widower of Sarah "Arlie" McKinney Starnes. He was retired from Springs Industries in Lancaster and he recently retired as a self-employed poultry farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Europe with Gen. Patton during World War II.

Surviving are his son, Larry M. Starnes of Ansonville, N.C., two daughters, Ann Holmes of Rock Hill and Cynthia Daniel of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe.

Robert Williams

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Mr. Robert Williams, 75, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital.

Memorial services will be private.

A native of Battle Creek, Mich., Mr. Williams was a son of the late Clifford Williams and Gertrude Williams. He was the widower of Joan Williams. A graduate of the Northwestern University College of Business, he was vice-president of Leo Burnett Co. and a longtime resident of Lake Bluff, Ill.

Surviving are three sons, J.D. Williams of Rock Hill, Matthew T. Williams of Chicago and Thomas F. Williams of Hilton Head; and three grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at his home in Chapel Hill.

James Bryant
CHESTER - Mr. James T. Bryant, 98, of 1194 Paden Bridge Road died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 at Chester County Nursing Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Clyde Mitchum officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mr. Bryant was a son of the late James R. Bryant and Fannie Porter Bryant. He was the widower of Bonnie Ramey Bryant. He retired from Springs Industries and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church and attended Chester County schools.
Surviving are his stepson, James N. Laws of Chester; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Willard Doby
LANCASTER - Mr. Willard James Doby, 82, of 312 Gillsbrook Road died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dale Roach officiating.
A native of Elerby, N.C., Mr. Doby was the son of the late James Miles Doby and Laura Clark Doby. He was the widower of Evelyn Neal Doby.
Mr. Doby was the owner and operator of the former Doby Laundry and Cleaners on Gay Street. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are three daughters, Judy Murphy of Great Falls; and Rachel Pittman and Laura Maria Doby, both of Lancaster; his sister, Frances McNair of Charlotte; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Frank Gaston
ROCK HILL - Dr. Frank Patton Gaston, 90, of 910 Myrtle Drive died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.
Burial will be 11 a.m. today at Laurelwood Cemetery. The funeral will follow at 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Mark Verdery and Dr. Craig Butler officiating.
A native of Edgemoor, Dr. Gaston was the son of the late John Newton Gaston and Mary Patton Gaston. He was a member and elder emeritus at First Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of Erskine College and the Medical University of South Carolina. He served his internship in Charleston.
Dr. Gaston was a World War II veteran who served in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the S.C. Medical Association and the York County Medical Association.
Surviving are his wife, Dora Dunlap Gaston; his son, Walter D. Gaston of Summerville; and two granddaughters.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 234 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730, or to the charity of your choice.

Edward Hargett
ROCK HILL - Mr. Edward "Ed" Cardwell Hargett, 69, of 557 Peachtree Road died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God, with Dr. Walter A. Clark and the Rev. William Bernie Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
A native of Camp Creek, N.C., Mr. Hargett was a son of the late David Hargett and Rose Walker Clark. He was an employee of Celanese Acetate and was formerly employed with J.P. Stevens' Industrial Mill and Inland Container. He was a member of First Assembly of God.
Surviving are his wife, May Hood Hargett; two sons, Wayne Hargett of Rock Hill and Windell Hargett of Catawba; his daughter, Jeanette Haselden of Rock Hill; his brother, David Hargett of Rock Hill; two sisters, Jodie Ayers and Becky Nalley, both of Rock Hill; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel.

William Jones
SENECA - Mr. William Terrell Jones, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Oconee Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gaston Memorial Cemetery in Gastonia, N.C.
A native of Eastland, Ga., Mr. Jones was the son of the late Monroe Jones and Alma Nixon Jones.
He was a member of The Legion of The Moose of Fruitland, Fla., and was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are three sons, John Richard Jones of York, Douglass Terrell Jones of Seneca, and Troy Ray Jones of Lockhart, Texas; two daughters, Pattie Jones Bivens of Pickens and Shirley Jones Mitres, of Eustis, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Seneca Mortuary, and at other times at 103 Veranda Court, Bayshore Eight, and 121 DeAnn Drive in Pickens.

Mary Mitchell
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Gilbert Mitchell, 82, of 1449 Colony Road died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 at home.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rogers Memorial ARP Church, with the Rev. Brian Phipps officiating. Burial will be private.
A native of Abbeville, Mrs. Mitchell was a daughter of the late John Baskin Gilbert and Mary Jane Waters Gilbert. A homemaker, she attended Montreat College and graduated from Arkansas A&M College.
Surviving are her husband, the Rev. William F. Mitchell; her son, W. Franklin Mitchell Jr. of Due West; two daughters, Jane Mitchell Long of Chester and Kathryn G. Dudley of Hickory, N.C.; her brother, Albert Pierre Gilbert of Mount Airy, N.C.; her sister, Leila Gilbert Voris of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the church.

Ramyrle Steele
PINEVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Ramyrle Carter Steele, 83, of Lakeview Living Center died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Burial will be at Mount Holly United Methodist Church.
A native of Albemarle, N.C., Mrs. Steele was a daughter of the late Carl Anderson Carter and Jettie Rae Russell Carter. She was a member of Central Church of God in Charlotte.
Surviving are her brother, Keith Carter of Albemarle; and her niece.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

FORT MILL - Mrs. Olivia Ashley Totherow, 85, formerly of Sidney Johnson Street, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.
Arrangements will be announced by Wolfe Funeral Home.

James Boling
LANCASTER - Mr. James K. "Jim" Boling, 44, of 501 Mountain-brook Road died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Sam Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Douglas Presbyterian Church.
A native of Lancaster, Mr. Boling was a son of Norman E. Boling Sr. and Jean Rapier Boling. He was a certified public accountant. He received a bachelor of science in business administration, with a major in accounting from the University of South Carolina. He owned Boling & Co. and was a certified public accountant. He was a member of the Lancaster Cotillion Club, the Lancaster Sertoma Club and the First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Linda Dudley Boling; two daughters, Kristen Rapier Boling and Caitlin Clarke Boling, both of the home; two brothers, Norman E. Boling Jr. of Pineville, N.C., and Timothy R. "Tim" Boling of Lancaster.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster.

ROCK HILL - Richard C. "Dick" Lewis, 67, of 1611 Constitution Blvd. died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Marlee Lloyd
LANCASTER - Miss Marlee Brooke Lloyd, infant daughter of Robert Lloyd and Angie Brooks Lloyd of 4705 Pageland Hwy. died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tim Larrimore officiating. Burial will be at the church.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her brother, Ryan S. Lloyd of the home; her maternal grandparents, Tommy Brooks and Wanda Brooks, both of Heath Springs, and Geraldine Adams and Mike Adams, both of Lancaster; her paternal grandparents, Robert C. Lloyd and Sheila Lloyd, both of Lancaster, and Marian McInvaille and Johnny McInvaille, both of Great Falls; her paternal great-grandmother, Louise Robinson of Lancaster; and her maternal great-grandfather, Dan Todd of Lancaster.

Vernon Ramsey
DALLAS, N.C. - Mr. Vernon Ramsey, 68, of 517 S. Maple St. died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at South Gastonia Church of God in Gastonia, N.C., with the Revs. Bobby Gilley and Sam Barnette officiating. Burial will be at Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia.
A native of Catawba County, N.C., Mr. Ramsey was a son of the late Claude Ramsey and Sudie Bumgarner Ramsey. He was a member of South Gastonia Church of God. He was an avid deer hunter and was retired from Sherrill Machine Shop.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie M. Ramsey; his son, Ronald Vernon Ramsey of Charlotte; three daughters, Deborah R. Shepherd of Walhalla, Pamela Jean Alley of Rock Hill and Kimberley Yannotti of Chester; his brother, Truett Ramsey of Dallas; his sister, Margie Trantham of Dallas; 11 grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at South Gastonia Church of God.

Annette Ratcliffe
YORK - Mrs. Annette Quinn Ratcliffe, 62, of 219 Lincoln Forest Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at home.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memory Gardens. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Ratcliffe was a daughter of the late James T. Quinn and Edna Moore Quinn. She was of the Baptist faith and formerly worked for Champion Laboratories in York.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Ratcliffe and John Ratcliffe, both of York; her daughter, Deborah R. Kirksey of York; her brother, Charles E. Quinn of Denver, N.C.; two sisters, Mary E. Cuadros of Rock Hill and Vickie Q. Addison of York; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel.

Bessie Bagley
CHESTER - Mrs. Bessie Bagley of 103 Rice St. died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church in Lowrys, with Pastor Bobby Featherstone officiating and the Revs. Dr. Willie G. Boulware, Charles Pratt, Otta Smith, George Lowry and Minister Joe Lee assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Bagley was a daughter of the late Mary Massey and Jack Westbrook. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Society, Hymn Choir and BTU She was a member of the AP&B Society Lodge No. 8, Christian Burial Aid Society and Prayer Band. She was a member of the Church Aid at Mount Olive Baptist Church. She attended Chester County schools. She retired from the culinary staff of the Chester County school system.
Surviving are three adopted sons, Donald White of Seattle, Leon Hammond of Salt Lake City and John Ray Sanders of McConnells.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at the Chapel of Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road and at the home of Regina Chisholm, 107 Memorial Drive, Chester.
The body may be viewed from
1 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Christopher King's Funeral Home.
The body will be placed in the church from 2 p.m. Saturday until the hour of service.

Willie Mae Bigham
FORT MILL - Mrs. Willie Mae Ashley Bigham, 84, of 213 Maple St. died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Lancaster Convalescent Center in Lancaster.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sisk Memorial Baptist Church, with Dr. Ronald Daves and the Rev. Roland Dry officiating.
Born in Lancaster County, Mrs. Bigham was a daughter of the late Ada Ashley and Houston McManus. She was the widow of Robert Roy Ashley and Baxter Bigham. She was retired from Lance Inc. and was a member of Sisk Memorial Baptist Church, where she was active in the WMU and senior citizens group.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Floyd "Tub" Ashley of Fort Mill and Lawrence Ashley of Monroe, N.C.; her daughter, Elsie Helms of North Myrtle Beach; two brothers, Harry McManus and Wylie McManus, both of Waxhaw, N.C.; two sisters, Shirley Helms of Fort Mill and Kathleen McQuirter of Waxhaw; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home of "Tub" Ashley, 213 Maple St., Fort Mill.

Robert Calder Jr.
LANCASTER - Mr. Robert Angus "Bob" Calder Jr., 73, of 204 W. Meeting St. died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at home.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Roy Barnes officiating.
A native of Sumter County, Mr. Calder was a son of the late Robert Angus Calder Sr. and Bessie Bernelle Benton Calder. He worked for the Lancaster News for 40 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was a member of American Legion Post 31.
Surviving are his wife, Rose Rogers Calder; two brothers, Kenneth Calder of Summerville and Harry Lee Calder of Hartsville; his sister, Bernelle Beckham of Hartsville; and his grandson.
