Charlie Biggers

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Charlie Mae Biggers, 79, formerly of 528-C Rauch St., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at her daughter's home.

The funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the United House of Prayer, with Apostle F. Gibson conducting the eulogy. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Biggers was a daughter of the late Marion Neely and Hestoria Hicks Neely. She was the widow of Abell Biggers. She attended the public schools of York County and was a homemaker.

Surviving are three daughters, Ruth Biggers of the home and Lessie Biggers and Charlie Faucette, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Modenia Neely and Rozenia Cathcart, both of Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Lessie Biggers, 342-D Wilhurst Court.

The body will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Clemons Funeral Home.

Shirley Boyd

CHESTER - Mrs. Shirley Davis Boyd of 126 Lancaster St. died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Heath officiating and the Rev. Otha Smith assisting. Burial will be at Brown Chapel AME Zion Church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Boyd is the daughter of Sarah Caldwell Davis and the late Jessie James Davis. She was reared by Mary Lee Clark. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, serving as past president and assistant president of the Usher Board. She was president of the Senior Choir and president of the Decorating Committee. She was a member of the Pulpit Aid and the El Leatherette Federated Club, serving as secretary. She attended Chester County schools. She graduated from Finley High School in 1965. She was the first licensed minority day-care operator in Chester County, operating for over 25 years.

Surviving in addition to her mothers are her husband, Robert S. "Bobby" Boyd Sr.; three sons, Robert Stewart Boyd Jr., Bobby Benson Davis and Daryl Leon Mobley, all of Chester; three daughters, Ursula Boyd Crosby, Mary Sabrina Boyd and Gawasha Geneva "GeeGee" Boyd, all of Chester; her brother, Robert Gladden of Woodridge, Va.; her sister, Lucille Davis of Baltimore; and 13 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

The body will lie in state at the church from noon Sunday until the hour of service.

Carl Brown

CHESTER - Mr. Carl E. Brown, 83, of 563 Fourth St. died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral with military graveside rites will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Greg Keller officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Glenda, Ark., Mr. Brown was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. He was an Army veteran with five years of service. He served with the Chester unit of the National Guard, retiring as a sergeant He held a part-time position for several years with Wright's Home for Funerals. He retired from Springs Industries.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wright's Home for Funerals.

James Merritt

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. James Walter "Tee" Merritt, 75, of 220 Cauthen St. died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, in the Bernardin Hospice Home in Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Heath Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery in Heath Springs.

A native of Gainesville, Ga., Mr. Merritt was a son of the late Roy Edward Merritt and Bertha Veal Merritt. He served as police chief in Heath Springs for a number of years. He was a retired law enforcement officer of the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. He was a member of Heath Springs Baptist Church and the Barron Masonic Lodge in Heath Springs.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys Rape Merritt of Heath Springs; his son, Randy Merritt of Taylors; his brother, Carl Merritt of Lancaster; his sister, Pauline Powers of Lancaster; and two granddaughters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and other times at home.

Harold Mickle

WADESBORO - Mr. Harold Lee "Mike" Mickle, 75, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at home.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Anson Memorial Park, with the Rev. Priscilla Durkin officiating.

A native of York County, Mr. Mickle was a son of the late Herbert Lee Mickle and Ella Kathleen Cranford Mickle. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He attended Wingate College and later graduated from Clemson University. He was a plant manager at Little Cotton Manufacturing for many years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wadesboro.

Surviving are his wife, Reba Stephenson Mickle; two daughters, Kay M. Register of Wadesboro and Allison M. Mills of Tucson, Ariz.; his brother, Paul Mickle of LaGrange, Ga.; his sister, Frances M. Allison of North Myrtle Beach; four grandchildren; and his great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Leavitt Funeral Home.

Rosetta Starr

ROCK HILL - Miss Rosetta Starr of 1102 Ebinport Road, Apt. E7, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Albert Nickles conducting the eulogy and Dr. L.L. Hancock and the Rev. Edward Garrison assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Miss Starr was a daughter of the late Robert L. Starr and Mary B. Starr. She attended York County schools. She graduated from Emmett Scott High School. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church. She was a domestic worker.

Surviving are two sons, Robert E. Starr of Rock Hill and Cederic E. Starr of Cheraw; her daughter, Mattie Y. Starr-Roseborough of Rock Hill; six brothers, David Starr of Washington, D.C., Robert L. Starr of Columbia, Jerry Starr, the Rev. Edward Starr and Howard Starr III, all of Rock Hill, and Edmund Starr of Fort Knox, Ky.; three sisters, Ella L. Dreakford of Catawba and Ruth S. Wallace and Catherine S. Potts, both of Rock Hill; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home and at 547 Walnut St.

The body will be placed in the church at noon today.

Ulysse Heath

HARTFORD, Conn. - Mr. Ulysse Heath, 60, formerly of Chester, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Long officiating and the Rev. Tommy Lee Heath assisting. Burial will be at Weeping Mary Baptist Church Cemetery in Fairfield County.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. Heath was a son of the late James Heath Sr. and Isabell Davis Heath. He was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church. He joined Pilgrim Way Baptist Church in Connecticut, where he sang in the men's choir. He served in Outreach Ministry and attended Chester County schools. He was a former chipper for Pratt & Whitney Co. in Connecticut.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee Cooper Heath; two sons, Carl Heath and Robert Heath, both of Hartford; three daughters, Brenda Heath, Cassandra Heath and Gail Heath, all of Hartford; five brothers, the Rev. James Heath Jr. of Charlotte, Willie D. Heath of Richburg, Matthew Heath of Chester, Freeman Heath of East Hartford, Conn., and Joe Arthur Heath of Blackstock; two sisters, Rosa Bell Caldwell of Winnsboro and Georgetta Brice of Sebring, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Joe Arthur Heath, 2024 Discovery Road in Blackstock.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mary Robinson

KERSHAW - Mrs. Mary Alice Holden Robinson, 75, of 1173 Barringer Road died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Kershaw City Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Robinson was a daughter of the late John Pete Holden and Lillie Matilda Barfield Holden.

Surviving are her husband, Elijah Joseph Robinson; two sons, Ron Robinson of Bandera, Texas, and Roger Robinson of Rock Hill; two daughters, Gayle Davis of Cleveland and Lila Clinton of Rock Hill; two brothers, James "Buck" Holden of Heath Springs and Charles "Gene" Holden of Kershaw; her sister, Esther Hammond of Lancaster; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

James Bradley

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. James Bradley, 63, of Kilner Drive died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road Chapel, with the Rev. Alan Weaver officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Bradley was a retired Kier operator for the Kendall Co.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda Varn Bradley; his son, Ronald Bradley of North Augusta; and his brother, Roger Bradley of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road Chapel.

Alan Byrd

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Mr. Alan K. Byrd, 44, of Weston, Fla. died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Bass Funeral Home, Rock Hill.

Born in Bardstairs, England, Mr. Byrd was a son of Hank Byrd and Peggy Harvey Byrd. He was a graduate of Northwestern High School and Clemson University. He earned a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Graduate School. He was a U.S. Navy pilot for 12 years before joining American Airlines, for whom he flew Boeing 777s.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Robyn Russell Byrd; his brother, Dirk Byrd of Williston; his maternal grandmother, Helen Harvey of Virginia Beach, Va.; and his paternal grandmother, Ursula Byrd of Rock Hill.

Dustin Strickland

ROCK HILL - Mr. Dustin "Dusty" Samuel Strickland, 83, of 1479 Quiet Acres Circle died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Terry Corder officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Tabor City, N.C., Mr. Strickland was a son of the late Alva Strickland and Elizabeth Foley Strickland. He retired from the Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. after 25 years and was a graduate of Ambassador College in Pasadena, Calif., a farmer, an agent for Liberty Life Insurance Co., and operated Strickland's Grooming and Pet Care. He was a member of Rawlinson Road Baptist Church. He was the widower of Edna Turbeville Strickland.

Surviving are his son, Jackie Strickland of Rock Hill; his daughter, Janice Jannell Strickland Tucker of York; his sister, Ella Mae Harrelson of Loris; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, and at other times at the home.

Marvin Childers

CLOVER - Mr. Marvin Clayton Childers, 63, 285 Bethel Hill Road died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Elwood Seamster officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mr. Childers was a son of Eula Brandon Childers of Bowling Green and the late Paul Clayton Childers. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Juanita Self Childers; his son, Marvin Clayton Childers Jr. of Frederick, Md.; his daughter, Jewell C. Seay of Fort Mill; two brothers, Johnny Childers of Augusta, Ga., and Randy Childers of Clover; five sisters, Joyce Moses, Beverly Thackson and Paulette Dunbar, all of Clover, Robbie Huffstetler of Salisbury, N.C., and Cathy Wingler of Concord, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover.

Ruth Hawley

McCONNELLS - Mrs. Ruth Nisbeth Hawley, 84, of 170 Hawley Road died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Olivet Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Chip McArthur officiating. Burial will be at Olivet Cemetery.

A native of Ogdensburg, N.Y., Mrs. Hawley was a daughter of the late Rupert Nisbeth and Emma Schmerhorn Nisbeth. She graduated from Potsdam University in Potsdam, N.Y., where she received a teaching certificate. She received a bachelor of science degree in education at Winthrop University. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an active member of Olivet Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of John R. Hawley.

Surviving are two sons, James Milo Hawley of Sharon and John F. Hawley of York; two daughters, Carolyn Failla and Laura Frame, both of McConnells; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
