Violet Roach

HEATH SPRINGS - Violet Williams Roach, 74, of 6117 Kershaw-Camden Highway died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Heath Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Oakhurst Baptist Church cemetery in Kershaw.

A native of Bethune, Mrs. Roach was the daughter of the late Clifford Williams and Janette Williams. She was the widow of Oscar Roach. She retired from Spring Industries and had worked parttime at the Sandbox Nursery in Heath Springs. She was a member of Heath Springs Baptist Church and was a volunteer with the Epiphany and Kairos prison ministries.

Surviving are three sons, Doyle H. Roach of Lancaster, Douglas Melton of Cayce, and LeHugh Melton of Lexington, N.C.; her brother, Jerry Williams of West Columbia; two sisters, June Jovenally of West Columbia and Glenda Powell of Lancaster; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Paul Snipes

LANCASTER - Paul William Snipes, 61, of 128 Paul Snipes Road died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Mullis officiating. Burial will be at the Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Snipes was the son of the late Sam James Snipes and Azalee Robinson Snipes. Mr. Snipes was a sergeant with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, where he served as a deputy sheriff/communications officer. He retired after 31 years. He was a member of University Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Glenda Griffin Snipe; his daughter, Dodi Denton of Rock Hill; three brothers, David Snipes, Gary Snipes and Larry Snipes, all of Lancaster; two sisters, Effie Harvey of Port Orchard, Wash., and Lois Beckham of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel and at other times at the home.

Charles Sutlive

ROCK HILL - Mr. Charles Mark Sutlive, 88, of 1826 Ebenezer Road died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at home.

A memorial Eucharist will be 2 p.m. today at Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, with the Rev. Dr. Charles S. Foss and the Rev. Charles A. Boland officiating.

A native of Savannah, Ga., Mr. Sutlive was a son of the late William Greene Sutlive and Josephine Laffiteau Sutlive. He was the widower of Doris Louise Brabham. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Savannah and attended the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour. After attending Davidson College, he worked for Pittsburgh Screw and Bolt Co., later Russell, Burdsall and Ward, where he retired as southeastern sales manager. After retirement, he worked as a sales representative for Electron Microscopy Sciences and Diatome, U.S.

He was a distinguished member of the Southeastern Electron Microscopy Society and the Appalachian Regional of Electron Microscopists and was a corporate member at large of the Alabama Microscopist Society. He was a charter member of Alliance Francaise, a member of Coastal Scottish Heritage Society and a member of the Georgia Historical Society. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was the widower of Doris Louise Brabham.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Elizabeth Wilson Sadler Sutlive; his daughter, Diane Louise Sutlive of Charleston; two stepsons, Richard Samuel Sadler of Rock Hill and David Hope Sadler III of York; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the service in Lumpkin Hall.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ernest "Sonny" Gerald Bailey, 60, of 351 Pickens St. died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Revs. Roger Brown and Bruce Craig officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.
A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Bailey was a son of the late Wardlaw Bailey and Iva Carter Bailey. He was of the Baptist faith. He worked with the recycling center on S.C. 160 in Fort Mill.
Surviving are his wife, Mary C. Bailey; two sons, Sam Bailey of York and John Bailey of Catawba; his daughter, Pam Bailey of Rock Hill; five sisters, Shirley Ashworth, Mildred Kennington and Ruth Sutton, all of Rock Hill, Margie Craig of Greer and Yvonne Cabe of York; four grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and at other times at home.

Thelma Ballard
YORK - Mrs. Thelma "Pat" Hudgins Ballard, 79, of 506 N. Congress St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in York, with the Revs. Randy Gardner officiating and Harry Bryant assisting. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.
A native of Gastonia, N.C., Mrs. Ballard was a daughter of the late William Franklin Hudgins and Lillie Mathis Hudgins. She was a waitress and hostess for Ramada Inn. She worked in textiles. She was a member of the First Baptist Church choir and the adult Sunday school class. She was a member of the York Senior Citizens.
Surviving are her husband, Samuel Ballard; four sons, Sammy Ballard of Clover, Roddy Ballard of Salisbury, N.C., Kirk Ballard of Seneca and Billy Ballard of Walterboro; her daughter, Paula B. Vallejos of Rock Hill; three sisters, Sarah H. Fowler of Burlington, N.C. , Emma H. Loftin of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Betty Earle of Clover; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Robert Bankhead
BLACKSTOCK - Mr. Robert Storment Bankhead, 82, of 4146 Heritage Road died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Chester County Hospital in Chester.
A graveside service with Masonic rites will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with Dr. David Riddle officiating.
A native of Blackstock, Mr. Bankhead was a son of the late Beard Storment Bankhead and Mamie Higgins Bankhead. He was formerly director of food procurement at Fort Jackson and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Hebron Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Great Falls High School. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of Great Falls Masonic Lodge No. 277 and Hejaz Shrine Temple.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Orr Bankhead; his son, Bobby Bankhead of Winnsboro; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

MCCONNELLS - Mrs. Mary Compton Brakefield, 91, of 1250 True Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at White Oak Manor.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thurs-day at Olivet Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Fant Steele and Chip McArthur officiating. Burial will be at Armenia United Methodist Church cemetery.
A native of Hulmeville, Pa., Mrs. Brakefield was a daughter of the late Robert Compton and Mattie Yahn Compton. She was the widow of Cecil Ray Brakefield Sr. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Circle.
Surviving are her son, Cecil Ray Brakefield Jr.; and five daughters, Sandra Brakefield, Nancy B. Scoggins and Dana B. Wood, all of McConnells, Margaret B. Tibbs of Great Falls and Maxine B. Lacey of Rock Hill.

Annie Carter
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Annie Sturgis Carter, 98, of 886 Church Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Neelys Creek ARP Church, with the Revs. Bill Fleming and Jan Seneker officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Carter was a daughter of the late James H. Sturgis and Anna Hicklin Sturgis. She was the widow of Woodard Carter. She was a member of Neelys Creek ARP Church. She was a member of the Friendship Hobby Club and the Caroline Boyd Circle.
Surviving are her daughter, Gladys Carter Mackey of Rock Hill; two grandsons, F. Dean Mackey of Pageland and Marvin Mackey of Rock Hill; and two great-grandchildren.

Betty Helms
FORT MILL - Mrs. Betty Ray Johnson Helms, 65, of Jackson Street died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fort Mill Church of God, with the Revs. Bobby Johnson and David Kemp officiating.
A native of York County, Mrs. Helms was a daughter of S.B. Johnson and Lillie Mae Patterson Johnson, both of Fort Mill. She was the widow of James Adam Helms. She retired from Celanese Corp. She was a member of Fort Mill Church of God.
Surviving in addition to her parents are two sons, James A. Helms Jr. of Charlotte and Gregory Scott Helms of Rock Hill; her daughter, Cheryl Reneé Doster of Fort Mill; her brother, the Rev. Bobby Johnson of Greer; three sisters, Patsy Meacham and Sarah Totherow, both of Fort Mill and Joyce Weaver of Chester; and her granddaughter.
The family will receive friends after the memorial service and at the home of Elmer Totherow, 1614 U.S. 21 Business, Fort Mill.

Joe Jones Sr.
FORT MILL - Mr. Joe Richard Jones Sr., 56, of 903 Steele St. died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, en route to Mercy South Hospital in Charlotte.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Fort Mill, with the Rev. M.N. Baxter officiating. Eulogy will be conducted by the Rev. Frank Murphy.
A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. Jones was a son of the late Laura Jones and Cathleen Jones. He joined Silver Mount Baptist Church in Lancaster County and later Indian Hill AME Zion Church in Fort Mill. He attended George Fish High School in Fort Mill. He worked for Siemens Westinghouse in Charlotte with 20 years service.
Surviving are his wife, Rosie Truesdale Jones; two sons, Joe Richard Jones Jr. of Rock Hill and Travis Jones of the home; his daughter, Shaneca L. Jones of the home; five brothers, Wardlow Jones of Columbus, Ohio, Willie Jones of Charlotte, Lewis "Woodrow" Jones of Fort Mill, Billy Ray Jones of Charlotte, Fletcher Jones of California; four sisters, Mary Poole of Winchester, Va., Shirley Turner of Rock Hill, Martha F. Jones of Newark, N.J., and Sallie Mae Howie of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Floyd Pendergrass
ROCK HILL - Mr. Floyd J. "Bud" Pendergrass, 79, of Magnolia Manor, formerly of 221 Ligon St. in Chester, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Magnolia Manor.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, with the Rev. Curtis Washington officiating. Burial will be at the church.
A native of Chester County, Mr. Pendergrass was a son of the late Will Pendergrass and Clara Sanders Pendergrass. He attended Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church and Chester County schools.
Surviving are his brother, William "Dooley" Pendergrass of Chester; his sister, Cynthia Barnes of Detroit.
The body may be viewed from
1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Hayes Reid
YORK - Mr. Hayes Junior Reid, 72, of 222 California St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Gaffney, with the Rev. Daryl Smith officiating and the Rev. Emmett Browning assisting. Burial will be at Mount Zion AME Zion Church cemetery in Hickory Grove.
A native of Cherokee County, Mr. Reid was a son of the late Willie Kay Reid and Sadie Jefferies Reid. He was a retired furniture delivery man for Freeport Furniture in Staten Island, N.Y. He was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Gaffney, where he was a member of the hymn choir.
Surviving are his wife, Lula Nichols Reid of Hickory Grove; three sons, Donnie Reid and Dennis Reid, both of Hickory Grove, and Kenny Reid of Carlisle; four daughters, Janice Gwinn, Quincy Wade, Peggy Reid and Karen Wilson, all of Hickory Grove; two brothers, Arizonia Reid of Sharon and Nickodemus Reid of Philadelphia; four sisters, Lois Logan of Grover, N.C., Virginia Byers of Gaffney, Rosa Lee McDowell of Charlotte and Mary Ann Bolds of Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Peggy Ann Reid, 1220 Smith Wood Lane, Hickory Grove.
The body may be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home in York.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Howard Wimmer Sr.
ROCK HILL - Mr. Howard Allan Wimmer Sr., 81, of 709 Twin Lakes Road died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at home.
The celebration service will be 1 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Shrum and the Revs. Russel Wimmer and Howard Wimmer Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
A native of Floyd County, Va., Mr. Wimmer was a son of the late Letcher H. Wimmer and Nina Henley Wimmer. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church and retired from Hoechst Celanese with 42 years service. He served in the Army during World War II in England, France and Germany.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine "Jo" Martin Wimmer; three sons, the Rev. Howard A. Wimmer Jr. of Greenville, the Rev. Russel L. Wimmer of Durham, N.C., and George R. Wimmer of Rock Hill; his daughter, Sarah W. Robbins of York, and eight grandchildren.

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Frances Steele Ledbetter, 73, of 1915 Ebenezer Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Rev. John Powell officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.
A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Ledbetter was a daughter of the late William A. Steele and Alelaide Carnes Steele. She was a member of West Main Church of the Nazarene. She retired from Hoechst Celanese Corp. with 42 years service.
Surviving are two sons, Dillard A. Ledbetter of York and Samuel "Sammy" Ledbetter of Rock Hill; two daughters, Judy Huddleston of Rock Hill and Vivian L. Zeiders of Chester; her sister, Catherine Barr of Lancaster; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Greene Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel, and other times at the home of her granddaughter, Tammy Windham, 1450 London Drive, Rock Hill.

Willie Roberts
KERSHAW - Mrs. Willie Mae Sowell Roberts, 87, of 6142 Lockhart Road, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in Hanford, Calif.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Morris and Donald Coppedge officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Roberts was a daughter of the late Robert Sowell and Ella Inez Johnson Sowell. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, and attended the Grace Bible Church in Hanford. She was a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday school class. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 94 and was a member of the Southern Sierra Archeological Society. She graduated from Mount Pisgah High School in 1930. She retired from Springs Industries in 1975 as cloth inspector.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas Byrd of Hanford and Robert F. Roberts of Kershaw; two brothers, J.T. Sowell and Ralph Sowell, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Evelyn Horton of Kershaw and Bobbie Catoe of Columbia; her stepson, R.D. Roberts of Chesapeake, Va.; her stepdaughter, Mamie Ruth Brock of New Ellenton; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel, and other times at the home of Robert and Celia Roberts, 864 Jones Road, Kershaw.

MONROE, N.C. - Mrs. Annie Mae Carter Starnes, 89, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Smith Nursing Home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. John United Methodist Church in Fort Mill, with the Revs. Robert C. Monson and Joe Tysinger officiating. Burial will be at the Unity Cemetery in Fort Mill.
A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Starnes was a daughter of the late Ervin Baxter Carter and Idella Helms Carter.
Surviving are two sons, Stanley Carter Starnes of Fort Mill and Luther Potter Starnes Jr. of Charlotte; four daughters, Phyllis Carras of Weddington, N.C., Dallas Starnes Holler of Columbia, Janice Starnes Pettus of Fort Mill and Susan Starnes Blackwelder of Monroe; two brothers, Sidney Carter and Zeb Carter, both of Fort Mill; three sisters, Jeanette Carter Neely of Rock Hill, Julia LeBlanc of Groves, Texas, and Sadie Carter Winn of Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Thomas Aubrey "Mutt" Allman, 85, of 17 Cauthen St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel, with the Revs. Larry Queen, Anthony P. Caruso and Michael Wooten officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Me-morial Park.
A native of York County, Mr. Allman was a son of the late Thomas Aubrey Allman Sr. and Sarah Jones Allman. He was the widower of Maggie Lee Stacks Allman. He retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. with 45 years of service. He painted homes and was a member of Garden Sanctuary Church of God.
Surviving are his daughter, Karen L. Walker Allman; his brother, James Allman of Kenosha, Wis.; and three grandchildren.
