Richard Cloninger Sr.
FORT MILL - Mr. Richard "Mutt" Franklin Cloninger Sr., 82, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Sonshine Village in Rock Hill.
A memorial will be 4 p.m. Friday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Harmon officiating.
A native of York County, Mr. Cloninger was a son of the late John Cloninger and Ann Bailey Cloninger. He was an automotive mechanic and retired from Celanese with more than 30 years service. He was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Clara Broadwell Cloninger; his son, Richard F. Cloninger Jr. of Fort Mill; his brother, Charlie W. Cloninger of McConnells; two sisters, Gracie C. Walker of Fort Mill and Ann C. Boatwright of York; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends after the memorial service in the church fellowship hall.

Mildred Cloud
CHESTER - Mrs. Mildred "Ella" Hogue Cloud, 90, of 663 Willa Court died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Bishop officiating.
Mrs. Cloud was the widow of Paul J. Cloud. She was co-owner and operator of Deluxe Cleaners on Saluda Street for many years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Albert Cloud of Chester and Joel Cloud of Matthews, N.C.; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wright's Home for Funerals.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Community Care in care of Catawba Area Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 4618, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Paul Finkle
FORT MILL - Mr. Paul Albert Finkle, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at
home. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday following visitation in the sanctuary of the Cathedral of the Cross in Charlotte, with the Rev. Richard Hamm officiating.
A native of New Haven, Conn., Mr. Finkle was a son of the late Charles Olin Finkle and Emily Talmidge Finkle. He retired from American Cyanamid. He moved to Fort Mill in 1983 and was a member of the Cathedral of the Cross in Charlotte.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine Bove Finkle; two sons, Dan Finkle of Charlotte and Frank Finkle of Naugatuck, Conn.; two daughters, Paula Sauer and JoAnne Bruner, both of Snow Camp, N.C.; two brothers, Earl Finkle of East Haven, Conn., and Louis Finkle of Las Vegas; four sisters, Ethyl Bowen of New Haven, Conn., Dora Couzzo and Margie Finkle, both of East Haven, Conn., and Dorothy Bove of Manchester, N.H.; 11 grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Cathedral of the Cross in Charlotte.

Mary Ledbetter
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Frances Steele Ledbetter, 73, of 1915 Ebenezer Road died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Rev. John Powell officiating.
A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Led-better was a daughter of the late William A. Steele and Alelaide Carnes Steele. She was a member of West Main Church of the Nazarene. She retired from Hoechst Celanese Corp. with 42 years of service.
Surviving are two sons, Dillard A. Ledbetter of York and Samuel "Sammy" Ledbetter of Rock Hill; two daughters, Judy Huddleston of Rock Hill and Vivian L. Zeiders of Chester; her sister, Catherine Barr of Lancaster; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Tammy Windham, 1450 London Drive, Rock Hill.

Lily Loncaric
CLOVER - Lily "Sweetpea" Loncaric, infant daughter of Rob Loncaric and Becky Loncaric of 104 Knox St. died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
The funeral will be private.
Surviving in addition to her parents are four brothers, Kipp Ellis, Chris Ellis, Stuart Ellis and Dylan Loncaric, all of Clover; her sister, Makayla Loncaric of Clover; her maternal grandparents, Glen Cagle and Helen Cagle, both of High Shoals, N.C.; and her paternal grandparents, Bob Loncaric and Sue Loncaric, both of Clover.
The family will receive friends at home.

Janie Maloney
RICHBURG - Mrs. Janie M. Branch Maloney, 81, of Ebenezer Nursing Home, formerly of Richburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Ararat AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Leroy Ellison officiating and the Revs. Tony White and Thomas Chesley assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Maloney was a daughter of the late Arthur Branch and Mary Cloud Branch. She was the widow of Willie Maloney. She was a member of Mount Ararat AME Zion Church and attended the public schools of Chester County and New York. She retired as a government employee in Washington, D.C.
Surviving are her sister, Ollie B. Phillips of Richburg; four caregivers, Frances Grant, Robert Lee Grant, Jimmy Grant and Naomi Young, all of Richburg.
The family will receive friends at the home of Ollie B. Phillips, 4528 Richburg Road, Richburg.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Floyd Pendergrass
ROCK HILL - Mr. Floyd J. "Bud" Pendergrass, 79, formerly of 221 Ligon St. in Chester, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Magnolia Manor.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, with the Rev. Curtis Washington officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mr. Pendergrass was a son of the late Will Pendergrass and Clara Sanders Pendergrass. He attended Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church and public schools of Chester County.
Surviving are his brother, William "Dooley" Pendergrass of Chester; and his sister, Cynthia Bonds of Detroit.
The family will receive friends at home.
The body may be viewed from
9 a.m. to noon today at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

Mildred Plattenburger
ROCK HILL - Ms. Mildred Lucille Plattenburger, 74, of 1833 Keith Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. William P. Shytle officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.
A native of Union County, N.C., Ms. Platten-burger was a daughter of the late Balm Crowley and Azalee Crump Crowley. She was the retired manager of Speedy's Bar & Grill in Charlotte. She worked at Plej's in Charlotte from 1989 to 1994. She was a member of Howie Gold Mine Baptist Church in Waxhaw, N.C.
Surviving are her son, Archie Howard Plattenburger of Charlotte; three daughters, Janet Bush of Rock Hill, Bonnie Bridger of Clermont, Fla., and Sandy Plattenburger of Stanley, N.C.; her sister, Kathryn Moreno of Narragansett, R.I. two half-brothers, David Crawley and Tony Crawley, both of Monroe, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends after the service.

Gloria Rainey
CHESTER - Mrs. Gloria D. Wilson Rainey, 42, of 100 Edward St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Long officiating and the Rev. Ronald McClurkin assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Rainey was a daughter of Lula McDowell Wilson Young of Chester and the late Harvey Wilson. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she was a former usher. She was a 1976 graduate of Chester High School, where she played basketball.
She attended S.C. State College in Orangeburg and Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C. She was an Army veteran.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Alvin Earl Rainey Sr. of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Alvin Earl Wilson Jr. and Brandon Larue Rainey, both of Richmond, Va.; her daughter, Ariel Rainey of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, John Henry Wilson of New York and Dan Wilson and Alphonso Wilson, both of Chester; three sisters, Daisy Garrison of New York and Evelyn Wilson and Lula Mae Strong, both of Chester.
The family will receive friends at home.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Hayes Reid
YORK - Mr. Hayes "Bubba" Junior Reid, 72, of 222 California St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Gaffney, with the Rev. Daryl Smith officiating and the Rev. Emmett Browning assisting. Burial will be at Mount Zion AME Zion Church cemetery in Hickory Grove.
A native of Cherokee County, Mr. Reid was a son of the late Willie Kay Reid and Sadie Jefferies Reid. He was a retired furniture delivery supervisor for Freeport Furniture in Staten Island, N.Y. He was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Gaffney, where he was a member of the hymn choir.
Surviving are his wife, Lula Nichols Reid of Hickory Grove; three sons, Donnie Reid and Dennis Reid, both of Hickory Grove, and Kenny Reid of Carlisle; four daughters, Janice Gwinn, Quincy Wade, Peggy Reid and Karen Wilson, all of Hickory Grove; two brothers, Arizona Reid of Sharon and Nickodemus Reid of Philadelphia; four sisters, Lois Logan of Grover, N.C., Virginia Byers of Gaffney, Rosa Lee McDowell of Charlotte and Mary Ann Bolds of Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Peggy Ann Reid, 1220 Smith Wood Lane, Hickory Grove.
The body may be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in York.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Debbie Roach
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Debbie Dunlap Roach, 45, of 4099 Mockingbird Lane died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Holly United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Mike Rouse and Linda Dunn officiating.
A native of York County, Mrs. Roach was a daughter of Ronald Dunlap and Anne Brooks Dunlap. She was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Tender Tails Riding Club and the American Kennel Club. She was a homemaker.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Jack L. Roach Jr.; her daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Roach of Rock Hill; her brother, R. Bill Dunlap Jr. of Rock Hill; and two sisters, Rhonda D. Poore of Rock Hill and Barbara S. McCullough of Mount Pleasant.
The family will receive friends at the home of Ronald and Anne Brooks Dunlap, 2246 Saluda Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

James Stephen
SPARTANBURG - James Barnett Stephen, 75, of 106 Sycamore Court died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be 4 p.m. today at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, with the Revs. Dr. Clay H. Turner, Robert L. Brown, Stephen Bruce Walker, and Michael Sullivan officiating.
A native of Pacolet, Stephen was a son of the late James Littlejohn and Annie Barnett Stephen. He was the widower of Sara Goodwin Stephen of Spartanburg. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1945 and from Duke University School of Law in 1949. He served in the Naval Reserve from July 1943 until September 1946 and retired as a lieutenant commander. He served active duty in the Pacific during World War II. He began his private law practice in Spartanburg in 1949. He was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1961 to 1968 and in the South Carolina Senate from 1969 to 1979. He was elected Circuit Court judge in 1979 and served continuously until retiring in 1992. He was a member of the South Carolina and Spartanburg County Bar Associations. He was a member of the St. Andrew's Society of Upper South Carolina and the Daniel Morgan Chapter of The Retired Officers Association. He was a member of St. John's Lodge 333, AFM. He achieved Scottish Rite 32nd Degree and was a Shriner. He belonged to the American Legion and the V.F.W. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia "Ginger" Lutz Stephen; his son, Dr. James Goodwin Stephen of Stockton, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Stephen Bergmann of Columbia and Kath-erine Stephen McCart of Spartan-burg; two sisters, Betty Ruth Stephen Walker of Spartanburg and Mary Stephen Duryea of Bennettsville; his stepson, Capt. William Burney Belser of Hill USAFB, Utah; his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Belser Kistler of Spartanburg; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends after the service in the church parlor.

Lizzie Blair

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lizzie "Jessie Dell" Dell Anthony Blair, 74, of 406 Rich St. died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in McConnells, with the Rev. Charles Johnson officiating. Eulogy will be conducted by the Rev. McKinley Baxter. Burial will be at Crossroads Baptist Church cemetery in Rock Hill.

A native of York, Mrs. Blair was a daughter of the late Harrison Anthony and Hannah Workman Anthony. She was the widow of Eddie Lee Blair. She was a homemaker and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a member of the Daughters of Israel Chapter No. 313, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are three daughters, Jessie Blair Smith of Washington, D.C., Vera Blair McClenningham of Rock Hill and Minnie Blair Smedley of Landover, Md.; two brothers, Henry J. Anthony of Forrestville, Md., and Harrison Anthony of York; her stepson, Nathaniel Patton of Rock Hill; her stepdaughter, Dorothy Patton Smith of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Vera McClenningham, 1930 Doby Drive, Rock Hill.

The body will be placed in Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and Eastern Star rites will begin at 1 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 205, McConnells, SC 29726.

Smith Clark

KERSHAW - Mr. Smith Elmore "Smut" Clark, 93, of 6598 Bowers Lane died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Oakhurst Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Rogers, Jimmy Hogsed, Larry Plyler and Dr. William L. McDow officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Clark was a son of the late John Thomas Clark Sr. and Julia Beckham Clark. He was the widower of Jesie Blackmon Clark and Laura Neal Clark. He was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and was a member of the Kershaw Senior Citizens. He was an Army National Guard veteran. He was a retired supervisor for Springs Cotton Mills. He helped organize White Springs Baptist Church and Springdell Baptist Church, where he was music director for many years. He sang with the Ole Palmetto State Quartet. He wrote several articles for the Lancaster News.

Surviving are his son, Samuel E. Clark of Salisbury, N.C.; two daughters, Shirley C. Player of Heath Springs and Peggy C. Bowers of Kershaw; his brother, William B. Clark of Lancaster; his sister, Oletta C. Mahaffey of Lancaster; his stepson, Joe Croxton of Lancaster; his stepdaughter, Kathryn White of Lancaster; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and his stepgreat-great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Oakhurst Baptist Church and at other times at the home.

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Ada Mae Beard, 74, formerly of Chester, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at home.

Arrangements will be announced by King's Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Jacob Oates

ROCK HILL - Jacob Hayward Oates, infant son of Tina Oates and Jerry Oates Jr., died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C.

A graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. today at Unity Cemetery, with the Rev. Scott Gibson officiating and the Rev. Mickey Smith assisting.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his paternal grandparents, Jerry Oates and Pauline Oates, both of Fort Mill, and his maternal grandmother, Nancy Bundrick of Rock Hill.

Fort Mill Funeral Home is in charge.
