Sam Gainey Jr.

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Sam Gainey Jr., 73, of 2869 S. Potter Road died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Elgin Baptist Church, with the Revs. Grady Ghent and Larry Reeves officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mr. Gainey was a son of the late Sam Gainey Sr. and Garfield Tarlton Gainey. He was a retired supervisor at Thermo Plastics in Pineville, N.C. He was a member of Elgin Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Julia Blackmon Gainey; three sons, Rickey Gainey, Sandy Gainey and Berry Gainey, all of Lancaster; four daughters, Doris Vivian Beecher of Charlotte, Denice Beaver of Heath Springs and Diane Driver and Marilyn Ellis, both of Lancaster; his brother, James Gainey of Okeechobee, Fla.; his sister, Thelma Eubanks of Lancaster; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte, Hwy., Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Attn. Lancaster County Unit, 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Roy Harris

LANCASTER - Mr. Roy Morris Harris, 81, of 2499 Cane Mill Road died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday with full military honors from Fort Jackson at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Revs. Grady Ghent and Mendel Baker officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Dadeville, Ala., Mr. Harris was a son of the late Belvin B. Harris and Eura Stone Harris. He retired from the maintenance engineering department at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of American Legion Post 31. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a prisoner of war. He received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.

Surviving are his wife, Irma Green Harris; two sons, Tony Harris and Kenneth R. Harris, both of Lancaster; two daughters, Penny Boling of Pineville, N.C., and Wanda J. Gainey of Lancaster; his brother, Bruce Harris of Texas; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Hwy., Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 1778, Lancaster, SC 29721.

Janie Maloney

RICHBURG - Mrs. Janie M. Branch Maloney, 89, of Ebenezer Nursing Home, formerly of Richburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Mount Ararat AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Leroy Ellison officiating and the Revs. Tony White and Thomas Chesley assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Maloney was a daughter of the late Arthur Branch and Mary Cloud Branch. She was the widow of Willie Maloney. She was a member of Mount Ararat AME Zion Church and attended the public schools of Chester County and New York. She retired as a government employee in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are her sister, Ollie B. Phillips of Richburg; four caregivers, Frances Grant, Robert Lee Grant, Jimmy Grant and Naomi Young, all of Richburg.

The family will receive friends at the home of Ollie B. Phillips, 4528 Richburg Road, Richburg.

The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon today at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

Rosa McCrorey

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Rosa "Gullie Mama" McCrorey, 70, of 220 Friedhiem Road died Monday Dec. 18, 2000, at Tanglewood Health Care Center in Ridgeway.

The funeral will be noon Saturday at First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. L.L. Hancock officiating. Eulogy will be conducted by the Rev. Bernice Davis. Burial will be at Bethel United Methodist Church in Landsford.

Mrs. McCrorey was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church. She attended public schools in York County.

Surviving are two sons, Junior Robinson of Washington, D.C., and Odell Robinson of Seattle; two daughters, Dorothy McCoy and Lorraine H. Glover, both of Rock Hill; two brothers, James Howze of Catawba and William H. Fredrick of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 615 Izard St., Rock Hill.

Parker Funeral Home is in charge.

Vernell Pinkston

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Vernell Steve "Squirt" Pinkston, 36, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, with the Rev. Donnie Garris officiating. Burial will be at York Memorial Park.

A native of Fort Huachuka, Ariz., Mr. Pinkston was a son of Felton Pendergrass and Mamie Bynum Pendergrass, both of Charlotte. He was an honorably discharged Air Force veteran. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the P.C. Pendergrass Choir. He was a member of the senior usher board, the Heaven Bound Young Adult Ministries and Men of Christ. He was a computer technician at Family Dollar Stores Warehouse.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his son, Christopher James Pinkston of Charlotte; his daughter, Jessica Nicole Pinkston of Charlotte; two sisters, Lisa Horne and Janis Seay, both of Charlotte; his grandmothers; Lois Pendergrass and Janie Cochrane, both of Charlotte; and his grandfather, William Bynum of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from one hour before the service at the church.

King's Funeral Home in Charlotte is in charge.

Mildred Plattenburger

ROCK HILL - Ms. Mildred Lucille Plattenburger, 74, of 1833 Keith Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. William P. Shytle officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Union County, N.C., Ms. Platten-burger was a daughter of the late Balm Crowley and Azalee Crump Crowley. She was the retired manager of Speedy's Bar & Grill in Charlotte. She worked at Plej's in Charlotte from 1989 to 1994. She was a member of Howie Gold Mine Baptist Church in Waxhaw, N.C.

Surviving are her son, Archie Howard Plattenburger of Charlotte; three daughters, Janet Bush of Rock Hill, Bonnie Bridger of Clermont, Fla., and Sandy Plattenburger of Stanley, N.C.; her sister, Kathryn Moreno of Narragansett, R.I. two half-brothers, David Crowley and Tony Crowley, both of Monroe, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, is in charge.

Louise Roscoe

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Louise Elizabeth Roscoe, 84, of 1094 Ebinport Road, Apt. 2, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the West Main Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. John E. Powell officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Roscoe retired from Randolph Yarns Spinning Department. She was a lifelong member of West Main Church of the Nazarene, where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class, the Women's Circle and the Missionary Department.

Surviving are her sister, Dorothy Murphy of Charleston; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to West Main Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, 832 West Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Florence Broome
LANCASTER - Mrs. Florence "Evelyn" Broughton Broome, 75, of 1688 Waddell Stinson Road died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Cole officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.
A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Broome was a daughter of the late Billy Burdell and Mae Truesdale Broughton. She was the widow of Clyde Broome. She was a homemaker and was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Sidney Allen Broome and William Burdell Broome, both of Lancaster; three daughters, Betty Gainey and Mary B. Faile, both of Jefferson, and Minnie Gibson of Lancaster; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, and at other times at the home of Sidney Broome, 1315 Riverside Road, Lancaster.

Elizabeth Patton
EDGEMOOR - Mrs. Elizabeth Patton of 3828 Patton Drive died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Tanglewood Health Care Center in Ridgeway.
Arrangements will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home.

David Moses
LAKE WYLIE - Mr. David Patrick Moses, 76, of 33 Timberidge Drive died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. today at All Saints Catholic Mission, River Hills Community Church, in Lake Wylie, with the Rev. Edward McDevitt officiating. A rosary will be recited at 12:30 p.m. today.
A native of Lake City, Fla., Mr. Moses was a son of the late Joseph Moses and Adele Johns Moses. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Mission Church. He was a World War II Army veteran. He received a BS in Commerce and Business from the University of Alabama. He was a retired vice-president and chief financial officer at Eichleay Corp. and was chairman and CEO of a savings and loan association. He was a former member of Chartiers Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was former president and was a member of the Southside Pittsburgh Rotary Club and River Hills Emergency Squad.
Surviving are his wife, Katy L. Whatley Moses; two sons, David Moses Jr. of Boone, N.C., and Michael F. Moses of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Karen Hoffmaster and Theresa J. Ambrass, both of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and nine grandchildren.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church after the Mass.

Virginia Reynolds
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Virginia Wilkerson Reynolds died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Mercy South Hospital.
No service will be held.
A native of Fort Mill, Mrs. Reynolds was a daughter of the late Mack Archie and Mable Archie. She was the widow of Lester Reynolds. She was retired from Belk and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross.
Surviving are her son, Lester "Butch" Reynolds of Lexington and three grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 36507, Charlotte, NC 28236.
Harry & Bryant Co. of Charlotte is in charge.

Gloria Rainey
CHESTER - Mrs. Gloria D. Wilson Rainey, 42, of 100 Edward St. died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Long officiating and the Rev. Ronald McClurkin assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Rainey was a daughter of Lula McDowell Wilson Young of Chester and the late Harvey Wilson. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she was a former usher. She was a 1976 graduate of Chester High School, where she played basketball. She attended S.C. State College in Orangeburg and Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C. She was an Army veteran.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Alvin Earl Rainey Sr. of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Alvin Earl Rainey Jr. and Brandon Larue Rainey, both of Richmond; her daughter, Ariel Rainey of Richmond; three brothers, John Henry Wilson of New York and Dan Wilson and Alphonso Wilson, both of Chester; three sisters, Daisy Garrison of New York and Evelyn Wilson and Lula Mae Strong, both of Chester.
The family will receive friends at home.
The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon today at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.
