Lofton Mayhugh
CHESTER - Mr. Lofton Martin Mayhugh, 83, of 1545 Mayhugh Drive died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Beverly Health Care in Rock Hill.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Uriel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. David Stover officiating.
A native of Hopewell, Va., Mr. Mayhugh was a son of the late Lofton A. Mayhugh and Susie McNamara Mayhugh. He was a wharf builder for the Navy and was a member of Uriel Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of Maury High School in Norfolk, Va., and attended Old Dominion College. He was a member of Doric Masonic Lodge in Norfolk.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Lewis Mayhugh; two sons, James L. Mayhugh of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Thomas M. Mayhugh of Chester; two brothers, Arthur Mayhugh of Norfolk and Arvin Mayhugh of Harrisburg, Va.; three sisters, Elsie Carr of Chesapeake, Va., Alma Gordon of Lutz, Fla., and June Dormann of Charlottesville, Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends following the service at Uriel Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.
Memorials may be made to Uriel Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 1578 Stringfellow Road, Chester, SC 29706.

Dorothy Lanier
YORK - Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Ligon Lanier, 80, of 141 Tirzah Road Ext. died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Tirzah Presbyterian Church, with Dr. James McGill officiating and the Rev. Jan Senneker assisting. Burial will be at Tirzah ARP Church cemetery.
A native of Blacksburg, Mrs. Lanier was a daughter of the late Charles Ligon and Lola Gordon Ligon. She was a member of Tirzah Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Afternoon Circle and the Sunday school adult class. She retired from J.P. Stevens Industrial Plant, with 30 years of service.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty Carroll and Thelma L. Barnum, both of York; her brother, Joe Ligon of York; and her grandson.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and at other times at the home of her daughter, Betty L. Carroll, 141 Tirzah Road Ext.

Viola Lumpkin
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Viola Crawford Lumpkin of 510-A Keiger St. died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Tanglewood Health Care Center in Ridgeway.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Nazareth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John T. McCoy officiating and the Revs. John H. Bailey and Billy R. Wilson assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of York County, Mrs. Lumpkin was a daughter of the late Joe Crawford and Ada Jamison Crawford. She was the widow of Henry Lumpkin. She was a member of Nazareth Baptist Church. She was a member of Missionary Circle No. 1 and AP&B Society No. 23. She attended the public schools of York County.
Surviving are her four sons, Palmer Lumpkin, James Lumpkin and Larry Lumpkin, all of Rock Hill, and John Lumpkin of Charlotte; five daughters, Corine Lumpkin of the home, Hattie L. Thompson and Annie L. Lee, both of Rock Hill, Rozena Crochen of Metuchen, N.J., and Vernell Lumpkin of Perth Amboy, N.J.; her brother, John Smith of Catawba; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at 1074 Albert St.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

John Boheler

BLACKSBURG - Mr. John Robert Boheler, 75, of 549 Kings Creek Drive, formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Smyrna Baptist Church. Burial will be at Canaan Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of York, Mr. Boheler was a son of the late Herby Boheler and Martha Bolin Dover. He was a heavy equiptment operator. He was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church and was a World War II veteran. He was owner and operator of Boheler's Grocery Store.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Westmoreland Boheler; three daughters, Glenda B. Norman of Clover, Audrey B. Farris of Blacksburg and Angela B. Blanton of Kings Creek; his brother, Bill Dover of Kings Creek; four sisters, Janice White, Sue Walker and Dorothy Wells, all of Kings Creek, and Shirley White of Gaffney; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Minnie Brown

YORK - Mrs. Minnie "Lucy" Dunn Brown, 61, of 2795 Hord Road died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be

11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Hills Cemetery, with Maj. Robert Butler officiating.

A native of Copperhill, Tenn., Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Clarence Dunn and Cleo Watson Dunn. She was the widow of Harold Brown Sr. She was a homemaker and was associated with the Salvation Army.

Surviving are two sons, Paul Brown and Harold Brown Jr., both of York; two daughters, Cathy Lindback of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Teresa Clark of Crystal, Minn.; her brother, Carl Dunn of Rock Hill; two sisters, Irene Sexton of Rock Hill and Becky Hinson of Chester; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and at other times at home.

Alue Cathcart

ROCK HILL - Ms. Alue Benson Cathcart, 99, of Beverly Health Care died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Boulware officiating. Burial will be in Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Ms. Cathcart was a daughter of the late John Benson and Ellen Parker Benson. She was a member of Crossroad Baptist Church, where she attended Sunday school and was a deaconess and served on the Usher Board. She was the oldest member of the church. She was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. During World War II, she worked for the United States Rubber Co. and received a presidential commendation for her service. She retired from Winthrop University.

Surviving are several cousins and a special cousin, Amanda Castle, who was her caregiver.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Clemmons Funeral Home.

Willie Howze

CATAWBA - Mrs. Willie Mildred Dunham Howze, 82, of 5483 Howze Road, Landsford Community, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon AME Zion Church, with the Rev. J.E. Johnson officiating and Dr. Mirian Crawford assisting. Burial will follow at the church.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Howze was a daughter of the late William Shepherd Dunham and Frances McMullen Dunham. She was the widow of Joe Howze. She was a member of Mount Vernon AME Zion Church, where she was deaconess, a missionary and a senior choir member. She was a member of the Stewardess Board and was life member and president of the Missionary Society. She was Usher Board Chaplain and was a retired domestic worker.

Surviving are five sons, Bishop Robert Gaston and Roosevelt Gaston, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., George Gaston of Rock Hill, Joe Marvin Howze of Catawba, Thomas Howze of Ankara, Turkey, and Herbert Howze of Charlotte; six daughters, Louise Howze of Edgemoor, Edna Williams and Josie Huntley, both of Winston-Salem, Annie Crockett and Gwen Davis, both of Fort Lawn and Hazeleen Nesbit of Catawba; 36 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Ethel Adams

CLOVER - Mrs. Ethel Hope Phillips Adams of 1526 Lawrence Road died Monday, March 5, 2001, at home.

Arrangements will be announced by Wright Funeral Home in York.

Robert Davis

CLOVER - Mr. Robert Newton Davis of 1825 Faulkner Road died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at home.

Arrangements will be announced by M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

David Hood

FORT MILL - Mr. David Eugene Hood, 57, of 2221 Coltharp Road died Friday, March 2, 2001, at home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wolfe Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. J.B. Helms and David Jennings officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Hood was a son of the late Eugene D. Hood and Irene Blocker. He was the owner of David's Drywall.

Surviving are his son, David W. Hood of Fort Mill; his daughter, Rita H. Holland of Fort Mill; six brothers, Dennis A. Hood of Pineville, N.C., Donald L. Hood of York, James M. Hood and Jerry D. Hood, both of Fort Mill, and Bobby Hubert and Stevie Hood, both of Rock Hill; four sisters, Dorothy E. Hillman of Port Charlotte, Fla., Linda I. Clyatt of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Esther Howington and Gloria Long, both of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home.

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Larry Michael Rice died Monday, March 5, 2001, in Charlotte.

Sarah Springs

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sarah Caldwell Springs of 1695 College Plaza died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Nazareth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John T. McCoy officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Fairfield County, Mrs. Springs was a daughter of the late Edward Caldwell and Susanna Hill Caldwell. She was the widow of Anderson Springs. She was a member of Nazareth Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Missionary Circle No. 2 and attended public schools of Fairfield County.

Surviving are five sons, Andrew Springs, Samuel "Bo" Springs and William Springs, all of Rock Hill, Otha Springs of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James Springs of Charlotte; four daughters, Lizzie M. Jordan of New York, Ida B. Hemphill of Rock Hill and Mattie Mills and Sarah Sanders, both of Charlotte; 32 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and 33 great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Betty Varner

BLACKSBURG - Ms. Betty Carroll Varner, 56, of 425 N. Charleston St. died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Brookview Healthcare in Gaffney.

A Celebration of Life service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with Dr. Billy Boone officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Ms. Varner was a daughter of the late John Ham and Ruby M. Carroll. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a former employee of Kosa in Shelby, N.C.

Surviving are her daughter, Melissa Huskey of Gaffney; her brother, William Carroll of Blacksburg; her sister, Thelma "Tency" Elliott of Blacksburg; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at White Columns Funeral Service.

Robert Davis

CLOVER - Mr. Robert Newton Davis, 88, of 1825 Faulkner Road died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Bethany ARP Church, with the Revs. Alan Morrow and Ian Wise officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of York County, Mr. Davis was a son of the late William Jefferson Davis and Ella Whitesides Davis. He was the widower of Wilma Barber Davis. He was a member of Bethany ARP Church, where he served as deacon and elder emeritus. He retired from Westinghouse in Charlotte.

Surviving are his sister, Mary D. Thomas of Clover; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home and at other times at home.
