Mary McCullough

EDGEMOOR - Mrs. Mary "Big Mama" Lee McCullough of 3720 Dion Drive died Monday, March 5, 2001, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Red Oak AME Zion Church in Edgemoor, with the Rev. R.L. Ecford officiating and the Revs. Mildred Watson and Charles Robinson assisting. Eulogy will be conducted by the Rev. G.W. Smith. Burial will be at Red Oak AME Zion Church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. McCullough was a daughter of the late Rev. John Lee and Bertha Stroud Lee Jones. She was the widow of John McCullough. She was a member of Red Oak AME Zion Church. She served as a member of the trustee board and the senior choir. She was a deaconess, a former mother of the missionary department and on the usher board. She was a former church custodian. She participated daily at the Edgemoor Senior Citizens Program. She attended public schools of Chester County.

Surviving are two sons, Joe Lewis McCullough of Edgemoor and Clyde McCullough of Rock Hill; three daughters, Lena Boyd of Buffalo, N.Y., Clara Gilmore of Rock Hill and Alberta McCullough of Edgemoor; two brothers, Ernest Lee of the home and Joe Lee of Rock Hill; two sisters, Winnie Barber of Charlotte and Ella Sibley of Rock Hill; 30 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

Willette McCullough

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mrs. Willette McCullough, 50, formerly of Chester, died Saturday, March 3, 2001.

Arrangements will be announced by Denton Funeral Home.

Sherry Miner

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sherry Crump Miner, 54, of 830 Gist Road died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Beverly Health Care.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Jesse Sims officiating and the Rev. Ron Fite assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Miner was a daughter of Herman Doyle Crump and Gladys Harris Crump of Rock Hill. She was a member of Grace Church of the Nazarene. She graduated from Rock Hill High School.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her son, Jack W. Massey; her daughter, Leslie Russell; two brothers, Stephen Crump and Donnie Crump, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Kathy Stricker and Patty Hutto, both of Rock Hill; and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and at other times at the home of her parents, Herman and Gladys Crump, 4193 Upper Cove Road.

Lewis Mobley

FLORENCE - Mr. Lewis Henry Mobley, 59, of 617 Marion St. died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Faith Health Care Center in Florence.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Nazareth Baptist Church, with Dr. John McCoy officiating. Eulogy will be conducted by the Rev. B.R. Wilson. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Mobley was a son of the late John Mobley and Jannie Bell Mobley. He worked for Springs Mills and was a brick mason. He was a member of Nazareth Baptist Church in Rock Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Gail Mobley of Rock Hill; four sons, Charles McCoy, John Mobley and Larry Mobley, all of Rock Hill, and Richard Mobley of New York; five sisters, Maggie Neely, Mary Gene Thompson, Jessie Brice and Julia Boler, all of Rock Hill, and Minnie Neal of New Jersey; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Funeral Home and at other times at 749 Green St. in Rock Hill.

George Winn Sr.

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Mr. George Thomas Winn Sr., 83, formerly of Rock Hill, died Friday, March 2, 2001.

The funeral was Monday at Faith Chapel North, with the Rev. Bill Tinker officiating. Burial followed at Barrancas National Cemetery.

A native of Royston, Ga., Mr. Winn was employed in construction for 25 years. He was a U.S. Marines veteran and was a member of Mobile Highway Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sadie Carter Winn; three sons, Clyde C. Winn of Watkinsville, Ga., George T. Winn Jr. of Pensacola and David E. Winn of Louin, Miss.; three daughters, Barbara Boling of Bryson City, N.C., and Judy Parker and Ann Mitchell, both of Pensacola; six brothers, Donald Winn of Moncks Corner, William Winn of Travelers Rest, Robert Winn and Arlene Winn, both of Rock Hill, Tony Winn of Gastonia, N.C., and Clifford Winn of Holly Hill, Fla.; five sisters, Myrtle Campbell of Kings Mountain, N.C., Dorothy Crenshaw of Murrells Inlet and Evelyn Mitchum, Jean Bishop and Shirley Hill, all of Rock Hill; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Faith Chapel Funeral Home North was in charge.

John Whitesides

ROCK HILL - Mr. John Baxter "J. W." Whitesides, 44, of 840 Bradley St. died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Bratton Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Sealy officiating.

A native of Indianapolis, Mr. Whitesides was a son of Thelma Harkness Whitesides Davis of Gastonia, N.C. and the late James Baxter Whitesides. He worked for Ferrell Printing Co. in Rock Hill. He was a house painter.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Claudia Jean Neal Whitesides; his son, Michael Rogers of Edgemoor; three daughters, Jennifer Leigh Ann Whitesides of Edgemoor, Gena Carpenter of Rock Hill and Angela Hazelton of Dry Prong, La; three sisters, Dottie T. Smith of York, Jimee W. Crough of Bessemer City, N.C., and Susan W. Alston of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the memorial service.

Bratton Funeral Home is in charge.

Elois Wilson

WEST COLUMBIA - Mrs. Elois Sanders Wilson, 65, of 101 Merryfield Lane, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at the Bernardin Hospice House in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Gold Hill Baptist Church in York, with the Rev. George McCoy officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of York, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of Nancy Wilkes Sanders of Columbia and the late Estelle Sanders. She attended Jefferson High School in York and Barber-Scotia College in Concord, N.C. She joined Gold Hill Baptist Church at an early age. She later joined the Mount Zion AME Zion Church in New York City. She worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 26 years. She worked for the New York Board of Education until 1999.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her son, Steven Wilson of New York; five sisters, Annie S. Hollis and Nancy Faye Love, both of Columbia, Margaret Dixon of Washington, D.C., Janice Thompson of York and Jocelyn Garrett of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and nine brothers, Samuel Sanders, John Bryant Sanders, Ted Lewis Sanders, Arthur Allen Sanders, Perry James Sanders and Richard Palmer Sanders, all of Washington, D.C., Leroy Sanders of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Dennis Steven Sanders and Carl Sanders, both of York.

The family will receive friends at the home of Dennis Sanders, 208 Williams St., York.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday.

Mary Pennock

LANDO - Mrs. Mary Ida Marlles Pennock, 85, of 3718 Lando Road, formerly of Columbus, N.J., died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Chester County Hospital in Chester.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Lando Cemetery, with the Rev. David Riddle officiating.

A native of Florence, N.J. Mrs. Pennock was a daughter of the late Harry B. Marlles and Ada McIntosh Marlles. She was the widow of Walter H. Pennock. She was a homemaker and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving are three sons, Eugene K. Pennock of Princeton, N.J., Walter L. Pennock of Clearfield, Utah, and Larry J. Pennock of Rock Springs, Wyo.; two daughters, Margaret A. Ferguson of Lando and Lillian S. Faust of Port Orange, Fla.; her sister, Beatrice A. Elms of Browns Mills, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Delois Thompson

CHESTER - Ms. Delois Thompson of 2678 Dawson Drive, Apt. 101 died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Pine Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating and the Revs. J.A. Darby and J.D. McClurkin assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Ms. Thompson was a daughter of Janie Thompson of Chester and the late Eddie Davis. She was a 1979 graduate of Chester Senior High School and attended York Technical College She was a store clerk at T.J. Maxx and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her daughter, Angela Thompson of the home; four brothers, Tommie Featherstone, Jeffery Thompson and Eddie Davis, all of Chester and Michael Thompson of Laurel, Md.; and two sisters, Joatella Thompson and Teresa Thompson, both of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Christopher King's Funeral Home.

The body will lie in state from 1 p.m. Friday at Pine Grove Baptist Church until the hour of service.

William Stapleton

CHESTER - Mr. William Robert "Bobby" Stapleton, 66, of 145 Bell St. died Wednesday, March 6, 2001, at Chester County Hospital.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Barron Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Chris Snellgrove officiating.

A native of Union, Mr. Stapleton was a son of the late William T. Stapleton and Inez Coleman Stapleton. He retired from Cone Mills in Carlisle, and he attended Union County schools.

Surviving are his wife, Martha S. Stapleton; two sons, Tony R. Stapleton of Clemson and R. Scott Stapleton of Chester; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Edward Stevens

CLIO - Mr. Edward Lee Stevens, 68, of 306 Ivey St., formerly of Kershaw, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Dundee Nursing Home in Bennettsville.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Kershaw City Cemetery, with the Revs. Marion Dry and Steve Miller officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Stevens was a son of the late Heyward Stevens and Lola Morgan Stevens. He retired from Springs Industries Kershaw plant and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Ella Mangum Stevens; three sons, Jimmie E. Stevens, James Maurice Stevens and Eddie Lee Stevens, all of Michigan; three daughters, Frances Marie Stevens of Michigan and Michelle Leigh Stevens and Valerie Kay Stevens, both of North Carolina; two brothers, William Stevens and Fred Stevens, both of Kershaw; two sisters, Emily Sowell and Betty Sue Price, both of Kershaw; and several grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 today at the cemetery and at other times at the home of his sister, Emily Sowell, 5308 Sandy Lane, Kershaw.

Willette McCullough

CHESTER - Ms. Willette McCullough, 50, formerly of Chester, died Friday, March 2, 2001,in Washington, D.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Chester, with Dr. C.D. Pratt officiating. The body will be placed in the church 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Ms. McCullough was a daughter of the late Walter McCullough and Tedia Harris McCullough.

She is survived by her son, Robert L. McCullough of Charlotte; three sisters, Delgaree Hardy and Hattie M. Able, both of Washington, D.C., and Shirlene Davis of Charlotte; six brothers, Octavius McCullough, Thomas McCullough, Joseph McCullough, James McCullough and Timmy McCullough, all of Washington, D.C., and Roosevelt McCullough of Chester; and her grandson.

The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, Roosevelt McCullough, 1344 Brown-McCullough Road.

Denton Funeral Home is in charge.

Ethel Adams

CLOVER - Mrs. Ethel Hope Adams, 73, of 1526 Lawrence Road died Monday, March 5, 2001, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Gethsemane Apostles and Prophets Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, with the Revs. Dewitt Youngblood Jr. officiating and James R. Lowery, Ted Adams and Christ Kelly assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York, Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Green Phillips and Geneva Phillips. She was the widow of Bishop Hezekiah Adams. She was an active member of Gethsemane Church, where she was a member of the Mothers board. She was active on the food committee. Because she opened up their home to the children of the community, many children along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her "Grandma."

Surviving are six sons, James I. Adams of Fayetteville, N.C., Danny Adams of Clover, Brandon J. Adams of Gastonia, N.C., Victor C. Adams and Ricky Adams, both of the home, and Hezekiah Adams of York; six daughters, Brenda F. Lowery of Clover, Glenda M. Lowery of Gastonia, N.C., Patricia A. Dunlap of Mount Holly, N.C., Cathy A. Evans of Colonial Heights, Va., Angela Adams of Clover and Jeanette Adams of the home; four sisters, Mary Sherer and Billie Phillips, both of Lake Wylie, and Hattie Mae Mason and Lizzie Carothers, both of Gastonia, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Gethsemane Church, c/o Building Fund, 1526 Lawrence Road, Clover, SC 29710.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

Mary Varnes

LAKE WYLIE - Ms. Mary Louise Varnes, 68, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001 in North Charleston.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at River Hills Community Church, with the Rev. Bruce Jones officiating. Burial will be at River Hills Church cemetery.

A native of Cameo, Colo, Ms. Varnes was a daughter of Fredrick C. Pahler and Rosa Merritt Pahler. She grew up on a ranch/peach farm. She received a business school certification in Denver, Colo. She was a bank secretary in Derby, Kan. and was an architect secretary to McKnight Engineering in Charlotte. She was a school secretary at Bethel Elementary in Clover. She was active in civic work, serving as secretary for the AF NCO Wives Club. She taught Sunday school in many Air Force chapels and served as treasurer for the Camelettes of the Red Fez Shrine Club. As an accomplished artist, seamstress and craftswoman, she belonged to numerous art guilds. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1990 and committed her final years to supporting the efforts of Alzheimer's research. She contributed to the Alzeimer's Association, research studies, walkathons and spoke at conferences.

Surviving are her son, Robert A. Varnes of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Patricia L. Kinnebrew of Tequesta, Fla. and Cindy S. Zarrelli of Atlanta, Ga.; her brother, Fred Pahler of Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Thelma R. Hays and Frieda E. Glannone, both of Grand Junction, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover, SC.
