Stella Moore
BALTIMORE - Mrs. Stella Hill Moore, 66, formerly of Blackstock, died Thursday, March 15, 2001.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Pilgrim Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roosevelt Davenport officiating. Burial will be in Baltimore.
A native of Chester, Mrs. Moore was a daughter of the late Ben Hill and Esther Foster Hill. She was a nurse and a 1953 graduate of Finley High School. She was a member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church, the church choir and the pastor aide club. She was a former member of Red Hill Baptist Church in Fairfield County.
Surviving are her husband, James Moore Sr. of the home; three sons, James Moore Jr., Vernon Moore and Frank Moore, all of Baltimore; her daughter, Shelia Moore of Baltimore; three sisters, Mary Alice Young of Chester, Emily Curbeam of Baltimore and Helen Davis of Buffalo, N.Y.; her brother, George Hill of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent March Funeral Home, 1101 E. North Ave., Baltimore, MD 21202.
King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, is in charge of local arrangements.

Boyce Philbeck Jr.
YORK - Mr. Boyce Lee Philbeck Jr., 71, of 1311 Philbeck Road died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alan Price officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A native of Rutherfordton, N.C., Mr. Philbeck was a son of the late Boyce Lee Philbeck Sr. and Grace Thompson Philbeck. He was the owner of Philbeck Construction Co. and member of Philantrophic Masonic Lodge No. 32, York Shrine Club and Union Baptist Church.
Mr. Philbeck is survived by his wife, Marjorie Bryant Philbeck of the home; four sons, Ernest Philbeck and Eddie Philbeck, both of York, Donald Phil-beck of Aiken and Danny Philbeck of Rock Hill; his daughter, Phyllis Hardin of Mount Pleasant; his sister, Geneva P. Ramsey of York; his half-brother, John Philbeck of Kings Mountain, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Ivory Hyatte
VAN WYCK - Mr. Ivory Hyatte died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Rock Hill.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at White Oak AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Harold Jones officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A native of Van Wyck, Mr. Hyatte was a son of the late Henry Hyatte and Bessie Hyatte. He attended Springdell Public School and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the White Oak AME Zion Church, where he was a member of the men's choir, the senior choir and the board of trustees. He was a mason.
Surviving are his daughter, Dorothy H. Hood of Chesapeake, Va.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.

Dewey Parker, Sr.
CHESTER - Mr. Dewey Thomas Parker Sr., 68, of 1686 Madison Road died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Chester County Hospital.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Barry Lambert officiating. Burial will be in the Armenia United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lowrys.
A native of Chester, Mr. Parker was a son of the late Lewis Parker and Beulah Beam Parker. He was a self-employed carpenter and served in the Marine Corps from 1951-59. He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Parker is survived by three sons, Dewey T. Parker Jr. of Lesslie, Larry L. Parker of Rock Hill and Danny O. Parker of Catawba; two daughters, Judy P. Edwards of York and Nancy P. Culp of Salisbury, N.C.; his brother, Curtis Parker of Bennettsville; four sisters, Janie Broome, Inez Taylor and Earlene Parker, all of Chester, and Beulah Mae Plyler of Gastonia, N.C.; his former wife, Louise Archie of Fort Mill; three stepsons, Jack Ashley and Mark Ashley, both of Gainesville, Ga., and Johnny Ashley of Lesslie; his stepdaughter, Margie Ashley of Gainesville, Ga.; his companion, Linda B. Gardner of Chester; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and at other times at the home of Larry Parker, 3051 India Hook Road, Rock Hill.

Lee Martin
ROCK HILL - Mr. Lee Cecil Martin, 76, of 1632 E. Lakewood Drive, Rock Hill, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at home.
A graveside service will be
4 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Christopher Ruppe officiating.
A native of Kershaw County, Mr. Martin was a son of the late Lee Dexter and Alice Jordan Martin. He was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church and attended North Rock Hill Church. He was the widower of the late Velma Rome Martin.
Surviving are two sons, Lee C. Martin Jr. and Tim Joseph Martin, both of Rock Hill; her daughter, Jennie Lee Gamble of Rock Hill; three brothers, Alfred Martin and Ivey Martin, both of Columbia, and Alva Martin of Fort Mill; her sister, Bernice Cline of Columbia; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Taylor Wagner
ROCK HILL - Taylor Ann Wagner, infant daughter of Kyle Wagner and Diana Smith Wagner of 2360 Zinker Road, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Mercy Hospital South in Pineville, N.C.
The funeral will be private.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her sister, Savannah Wagner of Rock Hill; her paternal grandparents, Kenneth Wagner and Kay Wagner of Rock Hill; her maternal grandmother, Diane Smith of Simpsonville; her maternal grandparents, Mike and Sandy Smith of Kernsville, N.C.; her paternal great-grand parents, Dan Stehle and Charlotte Stehle of Ohio; and her maternal great-grandfather, Charles Burr of Florida.
Cauthen Funeral home, Rock Hill Chapel, is in charge.

Carole Bell
ROCK HILL - Ms. Carole Campfield Bell, 62, of 238 Pointe Circle died Monday, March 19, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Drs. Shelton Sanford and William Fox officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.
A native of Rock Hill, Ms. Bell was a daughter of the late Roy W. Campfield Sr. and Mildred Nanny Campfield, She was a 1956 graduate of Rock Hill High School and attended Winthrop College and the College of Commerce. She formerly worked for Rock Hill National Bank and C&S Bank and retired from NationsBank. She was a volunteer with the Pink Ladies and the Junior Welfare League and was past president of the Old Pointe Homeowners Association.
Surviving are her son, Donald Jefferson "Jeff" Bell Jr. of Rock Hill; two daughters, Wesley Phaup Hughes of Rock Hill and Tracy Bell Johnson of Newport, N.C.; her brother, Dr. Roy W. Campfield Jr. of Missoula, Mont.; her sister, Jackie C. Campfield of Denver, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and at other times at home.

Samuel Brown
WASHINGTON - Mr. Samuel Brown, formerly of York County, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Tacoma Park, Md.
The funeral was Friday, March 16, 2001, at John Wesley AME Zion Church in Washington, D.C., with the Rev. Vernon A. Shannon officiating. Burial was at Maryland National Memorial Park in Laurel, Md.
A native of Catawba, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Odessa Brown. He attended public schools in Lesslie and joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served in World War II. He attended Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill after the war. Mr. Brown was employed at the Washington (D.C.) Star newspaper for 25 years, where he joined Local Teamsters Union No. 639 and advanced to shop steward. He retired from Raytheon at NASA Center in 1990.
Surviving are his wife, Janie Joyner Brown; his son, Donald Brown of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Catherine B. Reed of Plainfield, N.J., and Sharon Brown of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Marshall's Funeral Home in Washington, D.C., was in charge.

Hubert Cauthen
ROCK HILL - Mr. Hubert Boxtel Cauthen, 91, of 1915 Ebenezer Road died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Claude Dick officiating and the Rev. Bill Shytle assisting.
A native of Heath Springs, Mr. Cauthen was a son of the late Martin Odis and Irene Mobley Cauthen. He was retired from the Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co., with 25 years of service. He was a member and a deacon of White Street Baptist Church, now called Park Ridge Baptist Church.
Surviving are his son, William Cauthen of Rock Hill; two daughters, Martha Short and Joyce Cauthen, both of Rock Hill; his brother, Robert O. Cauthen of Rock Hill; his sister, Frances Baker of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and at other times at the home of his daughter, Martha Short, 949 Pearson Road.

Lee Martin
ROCK HILL - Mr. Lee Cecil Martin, 76, of 1632 E. Lakewood Drive died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at home.

Steven Pursley
COLUMBIA - Mr. Steven Edward Pursley, 38, died Sunday, March 18, 2001.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steven Lorimer officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
A native of Ohio, Mr. Pursley was a son of Joyce Pursley of Fort Mill and the late Charles Pursley. He was a 1985 graduate of Winthrop, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi. He was treasurer of the Greater Columbia Winthrop University Alumni Association. He was vice president of finance with Southern Plastics Co. in Columbia. He was of the Lutheran faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his son, Corey Russell of Columbia; his daughter, Kate Pursley of Columbia; his brother, Doug Pursley of Greenville; and his sister, Brenda Williams of Charlotte.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home.

W. Frank Guess
BALTIMORE - Author and lecturer W. Frank Guess, formerly of Rock Hill, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in Baltimore. He was 85.
Guess was a retired professor of English from Maryland State Teachers College and the author of "South Carolina: Annals of Pride and Protest," published by Harper & Brothers of New York as part of their series on "Regions of America."
Guess also was a reporter at The Evening Herald from 1936 to 1939.
Born in Rock Hill, Guess was a son of the late Algernon Prothro Guess and Rosa B. Strait Guess. After his father's death in 1920, the family moved from Denmark to Rock Hill to live with his grandmother, Rosa Gaston Strait. He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill.
Guess was salutatorian of the class of 1931 at Winthrop Training School and author of the inscription on the bronze historical plaque in the lobby of the training school building at Winthrop University.
He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Presbyterian College in 1935 and his master of arts with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he held a Rockefeller Fellowship for playwriting.
Guess served in the Army during World War II and earned the rank of captain. He was stationed in Panama for four years and a later served during the Korean War with the Third Armored Division at Fort Knox, Ky., and a psychological warfare agency in Tokyo.
A gathering of friends will be March 30 at Henry Jenkins Funeral Home in Baltimore. Burial will be at the City Cemetery in Denmark, with arrangements by Mercer Funeral Home.
Surviving are his sister, Rosanne Guess James of Rock Hill.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1011, Rock Hill, SC 29731.
