Bennie Love
YORK - Mrs. Catherine "Bennie" Glenn Love, 67, of 1680 Paraham Road died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Thomas B. McPhail officiating. Burial will be at Beersheba Presbyterian Church cemetery.
A native of York County, Mrs. Love was a daughter of the late David Glenn and Irene Jenkins Glenn. She was a member of Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church and was a retired second-grade school teacher.
Surviving are her husband, Hugh M. Love of York; two daughters, Cathy Love and Evelyn Love Ball, both of York; her brother, Morris Glenn of Rock Hill; her sister, Grace Glenn Hope of York; and her grandchild.

Elic Martin Jr.
GREAT FALLS - Mr. Elic Martin Jr., 82, of 113 Magnolia Ave., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Kershaw County Memorial Hospital in Camden.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darrell Twitty officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.
A native of Savannah, Ga., Mr. Martin was a son of the late Elic L. Martin Sr. and Emma Parrish Martin. He was a retired dye plant supervisor for J.P. Stevens Co. and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Great Falls Masonic Lodge No. 277 and Hejaz Shrine Temple. He was former president of the Great Falls Shrine Club and of the Great Falls C.B. Club. He was the widower of Pearl Day Martin.
Surviving are his daughter, Vickie Granger of Camden; two sisters, Frankie Gwin and Kathryn Roddey, both of Great Falls; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home and other times at the home of Kathryn Roddey, 4497 Great Falls Highway.

Willie Thomas Sr.
CARLISLE - Mr. Willie Mack Thomas Sr. of 719 Thomas Road died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at home.
Arrangements will be announced by Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

Dorothy Perrill
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Dorothy Perrill, 86, of 159 Sedgewood Drive died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Ebenezer Senior Services in Rock Hill.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, 234 E. Main St., with Dr. T. Mark Verdery officiating.
A native of Jefferson, Mrs. Perrill was a daughter of the late Walter William Miller and Lena Stultz Miller. She was a 1935 graduate of Winthrop College, where she was later director of Dinkins Student Center. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was an active volunteer at HOPE, Inc.
Surviving are three sons, Fredrick Eugene Perrill of Coronado, Calif., Peter Miller Perrill of Rock Hill and John Robert Perrill of Beaufort; her daughter, Patricia Perrill Cloninger of Rock Hill; her sister, Lena Reid Dunlap of Easley; and seven grandchildren.
The family will be at the home of Peter and Brenda Perrill, 1534 Pelham Lane.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1011, Rock Hill, SC 29731 or to HOPE, Inc., P.O. Box 774, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Jessie Truesdale
KERSHAW - Mrs. Jessie Lee Blackmon Cauthen Truesdale, 89, of 1302 Three C's Road died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the Lancaster Convalescent Center in Lancaster.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Hanging Rock United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Eugene Feagin and John Bauknight officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Heath Springs, Mrs. Truesdale was a daughter of the late Charlie Manly Blackmon and Belle Bowers Blackmon. She was a member of Hanging Rock United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was retired from Springs Industries. She was first married to Robert Cauthen and the late Frank Richard Truesdale.
Surviving are three sons, Lucius S. Cauthen of San Diego and Paul B. Cauthen and Henry M. Cauthen, both of Kershaw; her daughter, Jessie Mackey of Kershaw; her half-sister, Annie B. Asheford of Winnsboro; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of Henry M. Cauthen, 1225 Three C's Road.
Memorials may be made to the Hanging Rock United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 1285 Three C's Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Bruce Updike
TEGA CAY - Mr. Bruce Updike, 73, of 8017 Kiwi Point, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at home.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Grace Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, located at the corner of S.C. 160 and Gold Hill Road, with the Rev. Art Gatewood officiating.
A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Mr. Updike was a son of the late Adelaide Gorr and Ralph Mortin Updike. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He received a degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology, which later became Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He also served on the Business faculty at Barber Scotia College in 1990.
He began working at IBM immediately after graduation. In 1952, his first job with the company was in a branch office in Pittsburgh in marketing, where he sold electric accounting punch card machines. After that, electronic computers came onto scene, and he ended up in an Endicott, N.Y., planning lab. He was the planning manager for DOS and holds patent as part of the development team for the IBM System 360. He retired from IBM in 1991.
The family moved to Tega Cay in 1979. He served on the Adult Day Care Fund Raising Committee as well as the York Technical College Foundation Capital Campaign Committee. Mr. Updike also founded the Lions Vision Scholarship Program, designed to provide financial assistance to vision or hearing-impaired students at York Technical College.
He was a charter board member of the Good Folks of York County and a charter board member of the York County Regional Chamber of Commerce. He was founding father of the Gold Hill YMCA and was president of the Tega Cay Chamber. As an active member of the Lions Club, he served as president twice as well as zone chairman. He was Citizen of the Year in Tega Cay in two different years.
He also co-chaired the Senior Citizens Lions Club Christmas party for several years.
He was a talented writer and musician who wrote numerous articles for the local papers on the Lions and the charities he supported. He was a member of a barbershop quartet and played clarinet in a German Oompah Band called the Carolina Comaraderie.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kitty" Updike; and four children, Gregory Bruce Updike of Amarillo, Texas; Stacey Updike Moleski of New Milford, Conn.; Jeffrey Martin Updike of Fletcher, N.C.; and Bonnie Louise Updike of Savanah, Ga.
The family will receive friends at the church immediately after the memorial service.

Nathaniel Chisolm Sr.
ROCK HILL - Mr. Nathaniel Chisolm Sr. of 841 Arlington Ave. died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Boyd Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. Thomas Barber officiating. Eulogy will be conducted by the Rev. Daniel Chisholm, with the Revs. Billy Wilson and Roderick Pendleton assisting.
A native of York County, Mr. Chisolm was a son of the late Ebenezer Chisolm and Emma Choate Chisolm. He attended the public schools of York County. He was a member of Boyd Hill Baptist Church and was a retired sanitation worker for the city of Rock Hill.
Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Chisolm; six sons, Johnny Chisolm, Allen Chisolm Sr. and Norman Chisolm, all of Rock Hill, Ronald Chisolm of Catawba, Larry Chisolm of Suitland, Md., and Raleifoot Chisolm of Charlotte; two daughters, Gloria Jones and Priscilla Chisolm, both of Rock Hill; five brothers, Herbert Chisolm and Lamar Chisolm, both of Rock Hill, and Isaiah Chisolm of Cheraw, Palmer Chisolm and Berdark Chisolm, all of Washington; two sisters Dorothy Simpson of Charlotte and Doris Young of Buffalo, N.Y.; 27 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two adopted great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Robinson Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at noon Monday.

Willie Gladden
ROCK HILL - Mr. Willie Gladden of Simrill Street died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. W.W. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mr. Gladden was a son of Ella Bell Thompson of Charlotte. He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Chester and attended Finley High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home.
The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

James Taylor
CHESTER - Mr. James Daniel Taylor, 98, of 109 Deaver St. died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Chester County Hospital.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Chester Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Steve Bishop officiating.
A native of Stanley County, N.C., Mr. Taylor retired from Springs Industries. He attended schools in Stanley County, N.C. and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was the widower of Dorothy Smith Sketoe Taylor.
Surviving are two stepsons, John W. Sketoe and James R. Sketor, both of Chester; his stepdaughter, Marlene Martin of Chester; his granddaughter; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Avery Benfield
ROCK HILL - Mr. Avery Gene Benfield, 72, of 841 Rawlinson Road died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Shrum officiating.
A native of York, Mr. Benfield was a son of Lottie B. Tallent Benfield and the late Thomas B. Benfield. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church and the Grady Lane Sunday school class. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Elk Lodge. He was a volunteer and was a member of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Group at Mercy Hospital South in Pineville, N.C. He was a partner with Matthews-Benfield Excavating Corp. until 1972, when he started the Benfield Excavating Co., until his retirement in 1989.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Ann Gardner Benfield; his brother, James H. Benfield of Rock Hill; his sister, Sara F. Harris of Chickamauga, Ga.; his niece whom he raised, Whitney Rebecca Gardner of Rock Hill; and his nephew whom he raised, Jeffrey E. Gardner of Myrtle Beach.
The family will receive friends at home.

TyAsia Dixon
YORK - Little TyAsia Débre Dixon, infant daughter of Corti Dixon and D. Walls, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Uniondale Cemetery in York, with the Rev. Keith Hunter officiating.

Myrtle Riddle
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Myrtle Harris Riddle, 97, of 127 Murrah Drive, formerly of North Jones Ave., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. John Williams officiating.
A native of Lamar, Mrs. Riddle was a daughter of the late Fuller Harris and Lena Plumber Harris. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and was a telephone switchboard operator. She was the widow of William L. Riddle Jr.
Surviving are her son, William L. Riddle III of Happy Camp, Calif.; three daughters, Eva R. Aiton of Rock Hill, Hazel R. Campbell of Crossville, Tenn., and Ann R. Bennett of Indianhome, Okla.; her brother, David Harris of Lumberton, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and other times at 233 Marion St.

CHESTER - Mr. Audrey Liggins Sr. of 2926 Pilgrim Road died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Vergie Whitlock
DALLAS, N.C. - Mrs. Vergie Luecille Bradshaw Whitlock of 117 Healthy Way died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home chapel in Clover, with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.
A native of Burke County, N.C., Mrs. Whitlock was a daughter of the late Carl W. Bradshaw and Inez Dellinger Bradshaw. She was the first sworn policewoman in Gastonia, N.C., and sang with The Bradshaw Sisters gospel group for 45 years. She was the widow of Marion Lee Whitlock.
Surviving are her son, Anthony T. Whitlock of Hickory, N.C.; her daughter, Rebecca W. Sherrill of Clover; her brother, Johnny Bradshaw of Gastonia; two sisters, Edna Smith and Ivetta Bandy, both of Dallas; her stepson, Sonny Whitlock of Gastonia; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Ruby Deal
HICKORY, N.C. - Mrs. Ruby Church Deal, 77, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Craig Saltzer officiating. Burial will be at Catawba Memorial Park.
A native of Burke County, N.C., Mrs. Deal was a daughter of the late Clyde Church Sr. and Guylar Hart Church. She was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church and retired from Hickory Manufacturing Co. She was a member of the Good Cheer Group at St. Stephens Lutheran Church and was a volunteer at Cooperative Christian Ministries of Hickory.
Surviving are her son, Wesley L. Deal of Rock Hill; her daughter, Elaine D. Johnson of Hickory; two brothers, Clyde Church Jr. and Lewis Church, both of Hickory; two sisters, Leona Brown of Connelly Springs, N.C., and Christine Ward of Hickory; her stepdaughter; her stepson; three grandchildren; and her stepgreat-great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.
The body will be taken to the church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
