Viola Robinson
FORT LAWN - Mrs. Viola Gaston Robinson, 86, of 994 Old Nunnery Farm Road died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Vernon AME Zion Church, with the Rev. J.E. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Robinson was a daughter of the late Charlie Gaston and Frances Minton Gaston. She was a member of Mount Vernon AME Zion Church and was a deaconess and member of the hymn choir, usher board and missionary department. She attended public schools of Chester County and graduated from adult education in 1971. She was a homemaker and was the widow of Green "Capp" Robinson of Rock Hill.
Surviving are three sons, John G. Robinson of Fort Lawn, Joe L. Robinson of Edgemoor and Charlie M. Robinson of Rock Hill; two daughters, Francina Robinson and Lucille R. Hooper, both of Fort Lawn; her sister, Edna G. Dunham of Edge-moor; two grandchildren of the home, Viola C. Robinson and Kenneth L. Cherry; 30 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at home.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

James Roberts
YORK - Mr. James Edward Roberts, 75, of 308 Old Pinckney Road died Friday, May 4, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced by Wright Funeral Home.

Georgia Rodgers
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Georgia Elaine Merritt Rodgers, 55, of Hutchinson Street died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Beverly Health Care in Charlotte.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel, with Dr. Tom Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Flint Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Fort Mill.
A native of Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Rodgers was a daughter of Lula Mae Kimbrell Merritt of Rock Hill and the late George Washington Merritt. She was a homemaker and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a volunteer art teacher at Fewell Park Center and was a member of the Rock Hill Artist Guild. She volunteered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the York County Crescent Shrine Day Camp. She was the widow of Johnny Rodgers.
Surviving in addition to her mother are three sisters, Eula Mae "Jo" McGuire, Cornelia King and Pansy Phillips, all of Rock Hill; and her special friend and caregiver, Jo Ellen Cornett of Rock Hill.
The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel.

Maggie Strong
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Maggie Strong of 1121 E. Chapel Road died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Moses Lightner officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Strong was a daughter of the late Sally Tobias.
Surviving are her daughter, Rosie L. Thompson of the home; her son, June Thompson of the home; and her grandson.
The family will receive friends at home.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 tonight at the chapel of Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

John Young Jr.
CHESTER - Mr. John R. "Jack" Young Jr., 80, of 1198 Old York Road died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Chester County Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St.

Billy Graham
EAST ORANGE, N.J. - Mr. William O'Neal "Billy" Graham of 189 Shepard Ave. died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Columbus Hospital in Newark, N.J.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Woods officiating and the Revs. Willie Boulware and Charles Dunlap assisting.
A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Graham was the son of the late O'Neal T. Graham and Mattie Barber Graham. He attended Emmett Scott High School. He was a member of Atlantic Lodge No. 2 A.F. and A.M. Scottish Rite Masons of Newark and the International Longshoremen Association Local No. 1233 of Newark. He worked for the ILA for more than 31 years.
Surviving are his son, William A. Graham of Washington, D.C.; his sister, Margaret Ann Leach of Rock Hill; his half brother, Clarence Collins of Rock Hill; his half-sister, Phyllis Graham of Rock Hill; and his nephew and caregiver, Bernard Leach.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Margaret Leach, 871 Rolling Green Road, Rock Hill.
The body may be viewed from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home, Rock Hill.

John Matheson Sr.
FORT LAWN - Mr. John William Matheson Sr., 82, of 1357 Malcris Drive died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
The funeral was Saturday at El Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Curtis Wells officiating. Burial with military honors was in the church cemetery.
A native of Augusta, Ga., Mr. Matheson was a son of the late William Matheson and Lillian Jeeter Matheson. He was a retired World War II U.S. Navy chief petty officer. He was a survivor of the USS Princeton, an aircraft carrier that sank during the battle of Leyte Gulf. He was a Pratt and Whitney aircraft jet engine technical representative. He was a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He was the widower of Martha Mary McFadden Matheson.
Surviving are his son, John William Matheson Jr.; two daughters, Margaret Matheson Edwards of Charlotte and Mary Matheson Montgomery of Austin, Texas; his brother, Ben Matheson of Houston; two sisters, Cleo Provensen of Atascadaro, Calif., and Dorothy Edwards of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mahaffey Funeral Home, Lancaster, is in charge.

Robert Jost
GARDEN CITY - Mr. Robert B. Jost, 78, of 3427 Piedmont Trail, formerly of Rock Hill, died Thursday, March 29, 2001.
A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Rock Hill.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the church's fellowship hall.
Goldfinch Funeral Home, Murrells Inlet, is in charge.

James Roberts
YORK - Mr. James Edward "Pa Pa" Roberts, 75, of 308 Old Pinckney Road died Friday, May 4, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tues-day at St. Luke No. 2 Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Bruce Smith officiating and Bishop R.L. Ponder, the Rev. John E. Darby and Minister Tabitha Gwinn assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A native of Sharon, Mr. Roberts was a son of the late Rufus Roberts and Ola McCluney Roberts. He was a member of the St. Luke No. 2 Baptist Church and was a member of the A.P. & B. Society.
Surviving are his wife, Ardonia Pendergrass Roberts; three sons, James Harris of Greenville, William "Dub" Roberts of Rock Hill and Willie Shealy, of McConnells; five daughters, Barbara Tolbert of Greenville, Marjorie Anderson, Bonnie Roberts Meeks and Ora Williams, all of York, and Diane Gwinn of Sharon; his adopted daughter, Freddie Gill of Hickory Grove; two sisters, Clara Boyd and Ella Mae Darby, both of Sharon; two nieces whom he reared, Bobbie Wilson of Smyrna and Mae Frances Pendergrass of York; his nephew whom he reared, Mack Pendergrass of York; 25 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home and from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
The family will receive friends at home.

Lula Gore
CHESTER - Mrs. Lula Mae Gore of 109 Bradley St. died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The family will receive friends at home.
Arrangements will be announced by Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

Pauline Whisonant
ROCK HILL - Ms. Pauline Duncan Whisonant, 80, of 744 Brynwood Drive, died Friday, May 5, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with Chaplain Miriam Mick officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.
A native of Horry County, Ms. Whisonant was a daughter of the late Henry D. Duncan and Bertie Fairfax Duncan. She was a homemaker and was a member of the West Main Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her son, John Whisonant of Chester; three daughters, Shirley Hubbard-Hawks and Dorothy Sutton, both of Rock Hill, and Elaine Williams of Chester; four sisters, Aileen Dease, "Pete" Faulkenberry and Della Walker, all of Rock Hill, and Parnell Redfern of Panama City, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and at other times at the home.

Richard Lewis
YORK - Mr. Richard Grigg Lewis, 60, of 6445 Boulder Drive died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.
The memorial service will be private.
A native of Lewisburg, Pa, Mr. Lewis was retired from Bell South Telephone Company. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Shoup Lewis, and his brother, Ron Lewis of Pennsylvania.
Memorials may be made to St. Anne Catholic Church, 1694 Bird St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.
Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel, is in charge.

Richard Thorne
IPSWICH, England - Mr. Richard H. Thorne died Wednesday, May 2, 2001.
The funeral will be 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Ipswich Crematorium, West Chapel.
Mr. Thorne was the father-in-law of Rev. Larry Robertson of Mount Hebron Baptist Church in Rock Hill.
Surviving are his wife, Ada Thorne; his son, Neville Thorne of England; two daughters, Dora Thorne of England and Carmen Robertson of Rock Hill; eight grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.
Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mary Freeman
CHESTER - Mrs. Mary Orr Freeman, 92, of 10515 Pine Street died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at home.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chester Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Clay Waldrip officiating.
A native of Chester, Mrs. Freeman was a daughter of the late William Thomas Orr and Annie Aycock Orr. She was a graduate of Chester County schools and received her diploma in nursing from Chester Nursing Sanitorium. She was a registered nurse and worked at Pryor Hospital until it closed. She retired from Chester County Hospital. She also worked as a private duty nurse. A member of First Baptist Church of Chester, Mrs. Freeman was the widow of the late Memory H. Freeman.
Surviving are her son, W. Ronnie Freeman of Chester, and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Lora Camby
CLOVER - Mrs. Lora Lane Camby, 83, of 735 Cotton Trail, formerly of Gastonia, N.C., died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at home.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Shepard Memorial Park in Hendersonville, N.C., with the Revs. Tim Campbell and Bart Plaxco officiating.
A native of Macon, Ga., Mrs. Camby was a daughter of the late John A. Lane and Emma Elizabeth Gaily Lane. She retired from Burlington Industries in Gastonia. She was the widow of William L. Camby.
Surviving are her son, William Wayne Camby of Gastonia; her daughter, Donna Camby of Lake Wylie; her brother, Charles Lane of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Eddie and Betty Jo Campbell, 727 Cottontail Trail.

Lula Gore
CHESTER - Mrs. Lula Mae Bell Gore of 109 Bradley St. died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sandy River Baptist Church, with the Rev. Earl Stringfellow officiating and the Revs. Keith Taylor, Robert Lee McClurkin and James Hope assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Gore was a daughter of the late Charlie Bell Sr. and Lillian Gertrude Douglas Bell. She attended the public schools of Chester County. She worked in the culinary department at Chester Senior High School. She was a member of Sandy River Baptist Church, where she sang in the senior choir. She was a member of the AP&B Society.
Surviving are her husband, Willie Gene Gore; her daughter, Mary Jean Lide of Charlotte; five sisters, Elizabeth Bell and Arnell Young, both of Montclair, N.J., Arsonia Sanders and Magdalene Stringfellow, both of Chester, and Margaret Worthy of East Orange, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at home.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road.
The body will lie in state from 3 p.m. Wednesday until the hour of service at the church.
