Ewell G. Cotney

Ewell G. Cotney, 82, of Springfield Place, Newberry, widower of Hazel Bedenbaugh Cotney, died Monday, April 04, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Cotney was born in Newberry, a son of the late James N. and Florence Stockman Cotney. He was an Army veteran of WWII and was a former employee of Spartan Grain and the Newberry Airport. He was a member of Lewis United Methodist Church and he was a Mason and Shriner.
Mr. Cotney is survived by a daughter, Vickie C. Powell of Anderson; one sister, Elizabeth C. Cohen of Greenwood; four bothers, Boyd Cotney, Troy Cotney, J. D. Cotney and Birtrium Cotney all of Newberry; two grandchildren, Jennifer Powell and Nicholas Powell of Anderson; and a special friend, Earlene Boland of Chapin. He was predeceased three sisters, Virginia Shealy, Ruby Huffstetler and Etta Mae Dominick and two brothers, Virgil Lee Cotney and Nelson Cotney.
Funeral services for Ewell G. Cotney will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Lewis United Methodist Church by the Rev. Walter Green and the Rev. Wako Cotney. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Lewis United Methodist Church, 1105 First St., Newberry, S. C. 29108.

Joe R. Miller
April 2, 2005

Joe R. Miller, 68, of J. F. Hawkins Healthcare, died Saturday, April 2, 2005.
Mr. Miller was born in Newberry, a son of the late Alphonso F. and Sara Wertz Miller.
Mr. Miller is survived by wife, Patsy Harmon Miller of Newberry; two daughters, Jinks Machelle Miller Dupre’ of Navarre Beach, FL and Samantha Jill Miller of Prosperity; a son, Joe R. Miller, Jr. of Gulf Breeze, FL; a son-in-law, Barry Dupre’; a daughter-in-law, Kim M. Miller; a sister, Mary M. Beck of Newberry; two granchildren, Charles R. Folk, Jr. of Prosperity and Megan M. Miller of Gulf Breeze, FL. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Jean Miller and a brother, Richard Gerald Miller.
At the request of the family, there be no local funeral services.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 P. M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry

Mable E. Havird
May 31, 2005

Mable E. Havird, 98, formerly of 18 Abrams St., Silverstreet, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Miss Havird was born on February 1, 1907 in Silverstreet, a daughter of the late B. Mayer and Maggie Long Havird. She was a graduate of Newberry College and a member of Silverstreet Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A. and the F.C.L. Club. She taught school in Little Mountain, Pelzer and retired from Greenville Junior High School.
Miss Havird is survived by two sisters, Edna Havird Fly of Spartanburg and Mildred H. Vincent of Fort Belvoir, VA; a sister-in-law, Marquerite Havird of Silverstreet; eight nephews, Edward L. Fly of Warner Robbins, GA, Jerome F. Havird of Silverstreet, Dale L. Vincent of Port Washington , NY, John M. Fly of Spartanburg, Bruce H. Vincent of Houston, TX, Dr. Michael P. Vincent of Potomac, MD, Thomas H. Fly of Spartanburg, and David L. Havird of Shreveport, LA; a number of great nieces and nephews; and a number of great great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by seven brothers, Henry M. Havird, John Vernon Havird, , Jerome F. Havird, Berley M. Havird, Campbell Havird, Hugh L. Havird, and Paul B. Havird.
Funeral services for Mable E. Havird will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson and the Rev. Dr. Robert McCollum. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. on Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family will be at 18 Abrams St. in Silverstreet.
Memorials may be made to Silverstreet Lutheran Church, 120 Long St., Silverstreet, SC 29145.
Active pallbearers will be Bobby Long, Grady Senn, Danny Senn, Henry Senn, Mike Willingham, Jim Waldrop, and Pete Stoudemire.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Bowers, Louie Dale, Chuck Hazel, George Piersol, Maffet Fant, Arnold King, and the members of the W.E.L.C.A. of Silverstreet Lutheran Church and the F.C.L. Club.

May 31, 2005

Herman McKay, 86, of 2325 Rosalyn Drive, Newberry, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. McKay was born on June 11, 1918 in Romance, AR, a son of the late Oscar and Grady McKay. He was a US Army veteran of World War II paratrooper and was a retired superintendent at Kendall Company, Oakland Plant.
Mr. McKay is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Janie Frick McKay of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Janie Ann and Wyman Bundrick of Woodstock, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Cathy McKay of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Lathrop McKay of Pomaria; a sister, Lola Hogan of Nevada; a brother, Kenneth McKay of California; grandchildren, Sheramy Bundrick and Chantell Bundrick, both of Atlanta, Ga, Jennifer Frady of Hardeeville, and Melanie McKay of Newberry; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Frady of Hardeeville; and a step-grandson and spouse, Tony and Joann Michau of Chapin,
Graveside funeral services for Herman McKay will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jim Hager.

Marcus E. Bates, Jr.
May 25, 2005

Marcus E. Bates, Jr., 74, of 342 Summer Oaks Drive, Prosperity, formerly of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia.
Mr. Bates was born on September 18, 1930, in Converse, SC, a son of the late Marcus Erwin Bates, Sr. and Esther Brown Bates. He was a graduate of Cowpens High School and Cecil’s Business College and was a US Army veteran serving in the Korean War. He was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Whitney Masonic Lodge #264 in Spartanburg.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Myrtle Marr Bates of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl B. and Lee Reynolds of Gaffney; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Keith E. Bates of West Columbia, Jeffrey W. Bates of Spartanburg, and Phillip M. and Devlyn Bates of McKinney, TX; two sisters, Jacqueline McIntyre of Weaverville, NC, and Ann Sanders of Greenville; a brother, Billy Bates of Hendersonville, NC; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Leticia Parrish.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Maybelle Kinard Wright

Maybelle Kinard Wright, 101, of 917 South Main Street, Prosperity, widow of Clayton S. Wright, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Wright was born on November 23, 1903 in Pomaria, a daughter of the late Dantzler L. and Mary Alice Koon Kinard. She was the oldest member of Wightman United Methodist Church, Pearl Counts Circle, and the United Methodist Women. She was a World War I widow. She was a former employee of the US Naval Accounting Office in Charleston, SC, and a retired employee of Prosperity Manufacturing Company.
Mrs. Wright is survived by a daughter, Voris W. Bowers of Prosperity; a brother, John Kinard of Chapin; two granddaughters, Barbara B. Morris and Martha B. Waller, both of Prosperity; two great-grandsons, Terry A. Morris and Randel (Ron) S. Abrams, Jr., both of Prosperity; three great-great grandchildren, Michael A. Morris, Elijah D. Abrams, and Olivia Grace Abrams. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Bundrick and Lurlene Graham; three brothers, Joe W. Kinard, Colie B. Kinard and Virgil D. Kinard.
Funeral services for Maybelle Kinard Wright will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Eddie Taylor. Interment will be in Prosperity Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will at the residence of Voris W. Bowers, 9437 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity.
Active pallbearers will be Terry Morris, Ron Abrams, Robert Davis, Earl Graham, Jr., Colie Kinard, Arthur Kinard, Eddie Bundrick and Ludy Werts.

Richard D. Heath
May 17, 2005

Richard D. Heath, 85, formerly of 808 Lakewood Dr., Prosperity, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at the J.F. Hawkins Healthcare.
Mr. Heath was born on January 26, 1920 in Streator, IL, second child a son of the late Charles D. and Helen Fallon Heath. He retired as a Sgt/Major from the U.S. Army after 29 years of service. He was a veteran of WW II having been wounded in Sicily. He was post commander of VFW Post 6740. He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church.
Mr. Heath is survived by his wife of 63years, Virginia Mae Heath of the home; a daughter, Rachel L. Singleton of Appling GA; eight sons, Daniel R. Heath of Lexington, David P. Heath of Columbia, Robert R. Heath of Rock Hill, Michael P. Heath of Southport, NC, James J. Heath of Columbia, Steven J. Heath of Warren, PA, Richard N. Heath of Gilbert, and Patrick K. Heath of Charleston; two sisters, Joan Groene of Ladd, IL and Helen Schuller of New Castle, PA; four brothers, Gene Heath of Tampa, FL, Phillip Heath of Corvallis, OR, Charles Heath, Seattle, WA, and Paul Heath of Tacoma, WA; 26 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral Mass for Richard D. Heath will be offered at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the St. Mark’s Catholic Church by Father Lee Selzer. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens with military rites.
Rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M. Friday and the visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 928 Boundary St., Newberry SC 29108
Active pallbearers will be his sons and honorary pallbearers will be his neighbors.
