John Edmonds
LANCASTER - Mr. John Samuel "Sam" Edmonds, 96, of 505 Briarwood Road died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at New Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, with the Rev. Jack Couch officiating.
A native of Anderson County, Mr. Edmonds was a son of the late W.S. Edmonds and Lula Hembree Edmonds. He was retired from Reeves Brothers in Bessemer City, N.C., and was a member of Covenant Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Lee Edmonds; his daughter, JoAnn E. Cox of the home; his brother, Luther B. Edmonds of Anderson; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and his great-great-grandson.
The family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 578, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Ernest Gordon
ROCK HILL - Mr. Ernest Gordon, formerly of 3005 Vernsdale Road, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Magnolia Manor.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.W. Thompson officiating and the Revs. George Lowery, Minister Lisa Boyd and Evangelist Georgette Boulware assisting.
A native of York County, Mr. Gordon was a son of the late Robert Gordon and Janie Gordon. He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He was a member of AP&B Society No. 7 and The Farmer's Exchange and was a former Mason with Israel Lodge No. 140. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the widower of Clara Gordon.
Surviving are his son, Thomas Gordon of Rock Hill; four daughters, Patricia Gordon of West Orange, N.J., and Janie Peterson, Dietta McClenningham and Loretta Siglers, all of Rock Hill; eight brothers, James Henry Gordon, George Gordon, Robert Lee Gordon, Theodore Gordon, David Gordon, Willie Ed Gordon and Sammie Gordon, all of Rock Hill, and Odell Gordon of Nashville, Tenn.; three sisters, Geneva Braden of Nashville and Rosa Mae Ingram and Helen Miller, both of Rock Hill; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 917 Pearson Drive.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Robinson Funeral Home.
The body will be placed in the church at noon Friday.

Frances Griffin
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Frances M. Griffin, 88, of Hunterwood Nursing Home died Saturday, May 26, 2001.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Gethsemane Baptist Church on Dr. Carver Road, with the Rev. Glen Gerald III officiating. Burial will be at Bethel United Methodist Church in Catawba.
A native of Catawba, Mrs. Griffin was a daughter of the late Frank Walker and Channie Walker. A homemaker, she was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church for more than 55 years.
Surviving are two sons, Eddie L. Griffin and William Taft Griffin, both of Charlotte; four daughters, Mamie Loretta Neely of Catawba, Tina Twitty of Boston and Carrie Kennedy and Dorothy Kizzie, both of Charlotte; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service today at Gethsemane Baptist Church.
Grier Funeral Service in Charlotte is in charge.

Johnnie Humphries
UNION - Mrs. Johnnie Mae Humphries, 60, of 527 Sardis Road, formerly of Sharon, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital in Spartanburg.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Raymond Davis officiating and the Revs. Michael Glenn, Malachi Duncan and Blanche Jamerson assisting. Burial will be at Red Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Union.
A native of York County, Mrs. Humphries was a daughter of William Sanders of Sharon and the late John Brown and Marie Brown Sanders. She joined the Wilson Chapel AME Zion Church at a young age, before joining the Mount Hopewell Baptist Church in the late 1960s. She was a member of the young adult choir, the usher board and the missionary society at Hopewell Baptist Church. She was a member of the Floyd Wilks Chapter No. 208, Order of the Easter Star. She was a member of the AP&B Society. She was a 1959 graduate of Jefferson High School in York.
Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Lewis Humphries Jr.; two sons, Bobby McCluney Jr. and William Keith McCluney, both of Charlotte; her sister, Brenda Darby of Sharon; and two brothers, Leroy Good of Bessemer City, N.C., and Leroy Sanders of Rock Hill.
The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral Home in York and other times at the home and at the home of Kerry McCluney, Cabal Road, Sharon.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Jessie Rambert
ELIZABETH, N.J. - Mr. Jessie Lewis "Jet" Rambert, 56, formerly of Chester, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Methodist Church in Elizabeth, with Bishop Benjamin Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in New Jersey.
A native of Chester County, Mr. Rambert was a son of the late Derry Rambert and Willie Mae Rambert. He attended the public schools of Chester County and attended Finley High School. He was a member of St. John Methodist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a construction worker and was the owner and operator of Jessie High Hat Club in Elizabeth.
Surviving are his wife, Queenie Rambert; seven sons, Christopher Rambert and Michael Rambert, both of the home, Jessie L. Rambert Jr. and Drayton Rambert, both of Elizabeth, Kelvin Rambert of Charlotte and Jessie "Peter" Rambert and Corey Minter, both of Chester; five daughters, Tawanda "Peaches" Davis of Rock Hill and LaJoyce Rambert, Theresa Edmond, LaJetta Rambert and Katina Claxyton, all of Elizabeth; four brothers, Derry Rambert of Jamaica, N.Y., Alex Rambert of Chester, Pa., and Leroy Rambert and David Rambert, both of Chester; five sisters, Viola Washington, Lorenda Rambert, Alvenia Kennedy and Anna Gladney, all of Chester, and Dorothy Jennings of Rock Hill; and 19 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hicks Funeral Home, 655 Court St., Elizabeth.
King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, is in charge of local arrangements.

Dorothy O'Banion
FORT MILL - Mrs. Dorothy Hancock O'Banion, 73, of 9888 Barberville Road died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Glenrock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Flack officiating. Burial will be at White Oak Presbyterian Church cemetery in Ruby.
A native of Chesterfield County, Mrs. O'Banion was a member of Glenrock Baptist Church and was a retired nurse. She was the widow of Tom O'Banion.
Surviving is her granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Fort Mill Funeral Home.

Isaac Caldwell Sr.
RICHBURG - Mr. Isaac "Bubba" Caldwell Sr., 74, of 4684 Gaston Caldwell Road died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at home.
Arrangements will be announced by King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

Robert Elam Sr.
BALTIMORE - Mr. Robert Elam Sr., formerly of Chester, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the VA Hospital in Baltimore.
The funeral will be noon Friday at March Funeral Home in Baltimore.
Surviving are three sons, Robert "Bobby" Elam Jr., Edward Elam and Melvin Elam, all of Baltimore; two daughters, Emily Printer and Shirley Elam, both of Baltimore; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the home of Easter Mae Elam, Ursula Elam Sanders and Sammie Elam of Chester.

Beverly Corbett
TEGA CAY - Mrs. Beverly Buotte Corbett, 64, of 12082 Spinnaker Drive died Monday, May 28, 2001, at home.
A funeral Mass will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Monica's Church in Methuen, Mass. Burial will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
A native of Lawrence, Mass., Mrs. Corbett was a daughter of Helena Brown Hutchings of Charlotte and the late Edward Phillip Buote. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Monica's Church.
Surviving in addition to her mother are three daughters, Thomasine Corbett and Bernadette Corbett, both of Methuen, and Susan Len of Tega Cay; her brother, Phillip Buotte of Dorchester, Mass.; two sisters, Elaine Coyne of Charlotte and Bernadette Mujica of East Boston, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St., Methuen.

CATAWBA - Mrs. Nancy Giles Ratterree, 73, of 5000 Roddey Road died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m Friday at Roddey Baptist Church, with the Rev. Calvin Morrow officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
A native of Indian Land, Mrs. Ratterree was a daughter of the late Arthur Stephen Giles and Isabell Railey Giles. She retired from Everlock in Pineville, N.C., with 23 years of service. She was a member of Roddey Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, David F. Ratterree Jr. of Rock Hill; her daughter, Janet R. Hearn of Catawba; her brother, Arthur Ray Giles of Fort Mill; three grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and other times at home.

Harold Davis
ROCK HILL - Mr. Harold W. "Pee Wee" Davis died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Potomac Hospice Center in Arlington, Va.
The funeral will be noon Saturday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Sherman B. McBeth Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
A native of York County, Mr. Davis was a son of Pauline Twyman. He was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School and the University of District of Columbia.
He was a member of Jerusalem AME Church in Clinton, Md., where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the steward board, the missionary society and the choir.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his daughter, Aicha Davis; his brother, James Twyman of Lancaster; and his sister, Shirley Twyman of Washington, D.C.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.

FORT MILL - Mrs. Janet Blaney Stegall, 78, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, N.C.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Fastenau officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.
A native of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Stegall was a daughter of the late Charles Blaney and Lillian Blaney. She was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church and was a World War II veteran. She was co-owner of Low Country Marble in Myrtle Beach. She was a widow of Linson Lee Stegall.
Surviving are two sons, Mark Stegall of Danville, Va., and Gary Stegall of Conway; her daughter, Lynn Stegall of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Marie Quick and Dorothy Strezze, both of Columbus; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill.

A native of York County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late James Walter Smith and Macey Ramsey Smith. He was a retired textile worker in the paint and dye department. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and was a former deacon.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Campbell Smith; two sons, William L. Smith and David L. Smith, both of Blacksburg; two daughters, Annette S. Hamilton of Charlotte and Sue S. Gregory of York; two brothers, John Smith of Blacksburg and Charles Wesley Smith of Smyrna; five sisters, Doris Comer and Margie Smarr, both of Hickory Grove, Inez Adair of Rock Hill, Francis Moore of Blacksburg and Mary Ellen Rollins of Gaffney.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Gordon Mortuary and at other times at the home.

CHESTER - Mrs. Julia W. Campbell, 94, of 1508 AA Campbell Drive died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Chester County Nursing Center.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. David Sealy and Ronnie Green officiating.
A native of Anderson, Mrs. Campbell was a daughter of the late Thurston "Eugene" Webb and Eula Duckworth Webb. She taught school at Baton Rouge School and retired from Springs Industries. She attended schools in Anderson and graduated from Limestone College.
Surviving are four stepsons, Boyce Campbell and Ronnie Campbell, both of Chester, Jack Campbell of Bessemer City, N.C., Harold Dean Campbell of Greenville; three stepdaughters, Corrine Russell of Bessemer City and Jewell Lathan and Barbara Strait, both of Chester; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Barron Funeral Home.
