A. Bruce "Charlie" Comingore
June 24, 2005

A. Bruce “Charlie” Comingore, 82, of 2203 Harper St., Newberry, widower of Barbara Felker Pitts Comingore, died Friday June 24, 2005 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Comingore was born on May 23, 1923 in West Lafayette,IN. He was the son of the late Fred and Esther Pershing Comingore. He was retired Master Sgt. of the US Air Force. He was a 1983 Graduate of Newberry College, a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the Newberry Lions Club, and the 12th Armored Division Association.
Mr. Comingore is survived by his son and daughters-in-law, Bob and Susan Pitts of Eau Claire, WI, Lisa Pantano of Butte, MT; a sister, Catherine Robbins; two brothers Joe and Bob Comingore; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
Funeral services for A. Bruce “Charlie” Comingore will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens with full military rites.
Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer General Fund, PO Box 382, Newberry, SC 29108.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Newberry Lions Club.

James E. Black
June 25, 2005

James E. Black, 87, of Denny Highway, Prosperity (Saluda County), died suddenly of a massive heart attack, Saturday June 25, 2005, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Black is the son of the late Eric and Eunice Fulmer Black. He was a member of Corinth Lutheran Church where he has served on church council, and was a former member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where he served as chairman of church council, Sunday School Superintendent, and secretary.
Mr. Black had owned and operated Black’s Radio and TV on Main Street of Newberry for 50 years. He trained with DeForrest Electronic School and was honored as one the outstanding servicemen of S.C. by Philco. He worked at the Navy Yard in Charleston, and did Maritime service during WWII. He was a charter member of the Civitan Club of Newberry, a 50 year life member of Saluda Masonic Lodge 103, and a charter member of Circle Chapter 241 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was presently serving as Associate Patron of Circle Chapter, where he had also served as Worthy Patron, Secretary, and Chaplain. In Grand Chapter he had served numerous appointments, and had recently been recognized for attending 50 consecutive sessions of Grand Chapter of S.C.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 64 years, Fairey Louise Black; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Ralph Grant of Saluda; grandchildren and spouses, James (Jim) and Debbie Grant of Waxhaw, NC, Susan G. and Donnie Drake of Lexington, John and Helen Grant of West Columbia; great-grandchildren, Hilary and Hannah Grant, Stephanie Drake; sister, Lena S. Duncan of Columbia; nephew, C.H. Krell, Jr. of Spartanburg; and a niece, Janet Myers of Acworth, GA. He was predeceased by a sister, Vivian B. Krell, and a brother, Earl Black.
Funeral services for James E. Black will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Eddie C. Miller, Jr. Interment will be Corinth Lutheran Church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to ESTARL, c/o Virginia C. Gilreat, PO Box 343, Great Falls, SC 29033.
Active pallbearers will be Jim Grant, John Grant, Donnie Drake, Paul N. Shealy, C.H. Krell, Jr., Kenneth Howell, Joel Lindler, and Lewis Williams.
Honorary pallbearers will be all Eastern Star members.

Anna Louise Spigener
June 25, 2005

Anna Louise Spigener of 2701 Pickett Road, Durham, NC, died on Saturday, June 25, 2005. Born in Orangeburg, SC, the daughter of Mary Burton and Clarence Adams Renneker, she graduated from Winthrop College in 1936. After her marriage to Marion Pauling Spigener, she lived in Charlotte from 1939 until moving to Newberry in 1985. In 1991, she moved to The Forest at Duke in Durham.
She was predeceased by her husband, her daughter, Mary Spigener English, and her grandson, Christopher English.
She is survived by a brother, Clarence Renneker, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; two children, Marion P. Spigener, Jr. of New Haven, CT, Margaret Spigener Hamner and her husband Clay of Chapel Hill, NC; her son-in-law, Larry F. English of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Mary Margaret Fitch of Charlotte, NC, Lynn Fitch of Chapel Hill, NC, Julia Hamner of Cheatwood and her husband David of Charlotte, NC, and Tony Hamner of Pompano Beach, FL.
A memorial service will be conducted by Dr. Joe Harvard, Minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Durham, NC on Tuesday June 28 at 11:00 A.M. Family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Graveside services will be conducted by Dr. Harvard at Rosemont Cemetery at 12:00 noon on Wednesday June 29. Family will receive friends following the service at the home of Mrs. Spigener’s dear friends, Ann and Otis Taylor, 1938 Harrington St.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Newberry Opera House Foundation, PO Box 357, Newberry, SC 29108, Aveleigh Presbyterian Church, 1211 Calhoun St., Newberry, SC 29108, or First Presbyterian Church, 305 East Main St., Durham, NC 27701.

Emma Brooks Eslava
June 24, 2005

Emma Brooks Eslava, 82, of 2519 Alex Ave., Newberry, widow of George E. Eslava, Jr. died Friday, June 24, 2005 at her residence.
Mrs. Eslava was born on September 16, 1922 in Conecuh County, AL, a daughter of the late Richard Noble and Mary Lynch Brooks. She was a member of Woodmont Baptist Church in Mobile, AL until she moved to Newberry in 2000, when she moved her membership to Glenn St. Baptist Church. She retired from Allen Memorial Nursing Home in Mobile, AL as a nursing aid. She moved to Newberry in 2000 to live with her niece and spouse, Pat and Eakie McCullough.
Mrs. Eslava is survived by a sister, Anne Lucille Kelley of Westminister, CO; nephews and spouses, Jack and Linda Blackburn, Dewayne and Nancy Blackburn all of Newberry; several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and a step-daughter, Yvette Sondergard of Mesa, AR.
Graveside funeral services for Emma Brooks Eslava will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, McKenzie, AL by the Rev. Charles Matthews.
Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, at the Johnson Funeral Home, 218 Hwy 106 West, Georgiana AL.

Alan J. Caldwell
June 24, 2005

Alan J. Caldwell, 97, of Springfield Place, widower of Annie Metts Caldwell, died Friday, June 24, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Caldwell was born on February 13, 1908 in Newberry County, a son of the late Ben H. and Mattie Brown Caldwell. He was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a former employee of Maxwell Brothers Furniture Co. and retired from Fulmer Building Supply Co. He was a member and former treasurer of Beth Eden Lutheran Church and he was a member of the American Legion Post 24.
Mr. Caldwell is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Caldwell and Bennie T. Cockfield of Springfield, VA; a sister, Jennie Caldwell Walker of Whitmire; three grandchildren, Ben A. Cockfield of Gastonia NC, Julie Seay of Baltimore, MD, and Le-Ann Chestnut of Newville, PA; 6 great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Sims W. Caldwell, Wylie H. Caldwell, and Richard B. Caldwell.
Funeral services for Alan J. Caldwell will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Rodney Gunter. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be may to the Beth Eden Lutheran Church 228 Jalapa Road, Newberry SC 29108.

Dolores W. "Dee" Britt
June 17, 2005

Dolores W. “Dee” Britt, formerly of 1406 Chapman Drive, Newberry, died Friday, June 17, 2005 at the J. F. Hawkins Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Britt was born on April 1, 1929 in Charleston, WV, a daughter of the late Harold D. and Alma K. Williamson. She was a member of Chapin Baptist Church, an avid gardener and a volunteer for various Republican Party campaigns.
Mrs. Britt is survived by her husband, Dick Britt, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teala and Steve Armfield of Newberry, and Tonya and Jerry O’Cain of Prosperity; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Marlene Britt of Little Mountain and Toby and Meg Britt of Anderson; two brothers, Butch Williamson of Savannah, GA and Don Williamson of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren and spouses, Michelle and Tim Tisdale of Newberry, Ashley and James Loging of Greenville, Brad Armfield of Lexington, Stuart and Hope Britt of Lexington, Blake Britt of Little Mountain, T. J. Britt of Charleston, Amanda and Jason Strickland of Lexington and Tanner O’Cain of Prosperity; four great-grandchildren, Justin and Kelsey Tisdale and Bryce and Bailee Loging. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary W. Gandy.
A graveside funeral service for Dolores W. Britt will be conducted at 11: 00 A. M. Monday at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev.Phillip Vaughn.
Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Pearl Burns Wessinger
June 10, 2005

Pearl Burns Wessinger, 93, formerly of 1602 Evans Street, Newberry, widow of J. Miller Wessinger, died Friday, June 10, 2005 at the White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Wessinger was born on June 29, 1911 in Valdese, NC, a daughter of the late Lee and Carrie Mitcheum Burns. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the Elizabeth Circle of the WELCA, and the George B. Cromer Bible Class.
Mrs. Wessinger is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Norma W. and Robert M. “Mack” Glymph of Union; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Wessinger of Kinards; a sister, Annie B. Baxter of Newberry; a brother, Jack Burns of Valdese, NC; five grandchildren, Robert “Bob” Wessinger of Lexington, Jimmy Wessinger of Atlanta, GA, Candice Wessinger of Hollywood, FL, Lisa Hayes of Union, and Alan Glymph of Newberry; and eight great-grandchildren. She predeceased by a son, Robert Burns Wessinger.
Funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment will be in Newberry Memorials Gardens.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:30 P. M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
