Katherine Massey

COLUMBIA - Mrs. Katherine Hammond Massey, 97, of 7225 Stonehaven Drive died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.

A church service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church, with Dr. W. Timothy McClendon officiating. Burial will be at Ebenezer ARP Church cemetery.

A native of Abbeville, Mrs. Massey was a daughter of the late Henry Scott Hammond and Mae Palmer Hammond. She was the widow of Reese M. Massey Sr. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where she served as the first secretary of the church. She was a member of the Browning Sikes Sunday school class and was a life member of United Methodist Women. She graduated from Rock Hill High School and attended Winthrop College. In 1932, she became the first Wesley Foundation Director for Winthrop College. She was a member of numerous garden clubs, civic organizations and volunteered at Red Cross and Hospice of Rock Hill. She was a secretary at Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co., with 20 years of service and upon retirement was employment manager at M. Lowenstein Co. In 1961, she was elected Secretary of the Year in the local chapter of the National Secretaries Association and went on to be Secretary of the Year in the Carolinas.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. Reese M. Massey Jr. of Columbia; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to the hour of service at St. John's United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 149, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

Sarah Williams

UNION - Mrs. Sarah Bruce Williams, 89, of Oakmont Nursing Home died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in Wallace Thomson Hospital.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rosemont Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry Crocker officiating.

A native of Dillion, Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late Daniel W. Bowen and Annie Elizabeth Moody Bowen. She was the widow of Harper L. Vaughan. She was a member of the Bear Swamp Baptist Church in Dillon County.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann Reynolds of Charlotte; her son, Tony Vaughan of Rock Hill; two sisters, Miriam Trumble of Charlotte and Ethel Turbeville of Gastonia, N.C.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her great-great grandchild.

The family will be at their respective homes.

The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight.

The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge.

Mary White

YORK - Mrs. Mary Helen Stewart White, 83, of White Oak Manor died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church in York, with the Rev. Keith Hunter officiating and the Revs. Darryl White, Darayl Mayfield and George McCoy assisting. Burial will be at Hopewell United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of York, Mrs. White was a daughter of the late Will Stewart and Jessie Fewell Stewart. She attended public schools in York County and retired from Divine Saviour Hospital in York, where she was a dietician for more than 17 years. She joined Hopewell United Methodist Church at an early age and attended as often as able while raising a physically challenged son at home. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the A. P. & B. Society and the Friendly Aid Society.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Leon White Sr.; four sons, Leon White Jr. and George White of Charlotte, and Rufus Horace White and Carl White, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Clara Burris and Hattie Hairston, both of Charlotte, and Jessie Mae McClain of York; her sister, Sara Harris of Charlotte; 22 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church and at other times at the home of her granddaughter, Sheila Burris, Hwy. 49 South, York

Mr. John "John Boy" Boyd

CHARLOTTE - Mr. John "John Boy" Boyd, 47, of 3115 Zircon St. died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Avante of Concord Nursing Center in Concord, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke No. 2 Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Bruce Smith officiating and the Rev. H. E. Dickson assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Sharon, Mr. Boyd was a son of Mary Lee Johnson Boyd of Charlotte and the late Aidean Boyd. He was a roofer and concrete finisher.

Surviving in addition to his mother, are five brothers, R. B. Boyd, Allen Boyd and Paul Boyd, all of Charlotte, Jerry Boyd and Ricky Boyd, both of the home; five sisters, Annette Caldwell and Mary Rice, both of Charlotte, Louvenia Watson and Mattie Cole, both of Gastonia, N.C., and Roberta Boyd of Clover.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home in York and other times at the home of his sister, Annette Caldwell, 443 Lorna St., Charlotte.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Peggy Caldwell

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Ms. Peggy J. Caldwell, 52, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Woods officiating. Burial will be at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of York County, Ms. Caldwell was a daughter of Rufus Caldwell Sr. and the late Carrie G. Caldwell. She was a member of Forbush Missionary Baptist Church in Yadkinville.

Surviving in addition to her father are two brothers, Rufus Caldwell Jr. of Detroit and Larry Caldwell of Biloxi, Miss; two sisters, Ruby G. Wilkerson of Winston-Salem and Mamie Brown of Fort Washington, Md.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice or Ebenezer Baptist Church Building Fund.

Lois Carter

ROCK HILL - Dr. Lois Jones Carter, 83, of 1330 India Hook Road died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Westminster Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Anthony W. Dick officiating.

A native of Minnesota, Dr. Carter was a daughter of the late Dana Jones and Cecile Jacobson. She was a pathologist at York General Hospital and was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. She accomplished the highest order of the Eastern Star, and was a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Wooster College and a master of arts degree from Ohio State University. She received her medical degree in pathology from Western Reserve. She was a member of the York County and South Carolina Medical Associations.

Surviving are two sons, Peter Carter of York and Robert Carter of California; her daughter, Elizabeth Carter of Boston; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or Bethesda Presbyterian Church.

Johnny Davis

BALTIMORE - Mr. Johnny Oates Davis, 85, of the Future Care Nursing Center died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001.

Arrangements will be announced by Wright Funeral Home in York.

Edna Fisher

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Edna Fisher, 93, of 1330 India Hook Road died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Westminster Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bona Venture Cemetery in Canton, N.C.

A native of Haywood County, N.C., Mrs. Fisher was the widow of Robert M. Fisher.

Surviving are her son, Boyd Fisher of Rock Hill; her daughter, Margaret Phillips of Canton; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Westminster Towers community room.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

W. David Franklin

GREAT FALLS - Mr. W. David Franklin, 79, of 40 Pendleton St. died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Larry Roberts and John Mullis officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

A native of Fort Lawn, Mr. Franklin was a son of the late William Cox Franklin and Ora Estelle Hicklin Franklin. He was a retired supervisor at J.P. Stevens Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church and graduated from Chester County schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his son, Donald P. Franklin of Great Falls; his daughter, Lynda Bernhardt of Waldorf, Md.; his sister, Doris Mickle of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Marguerite Grant

CHESTER - Mrs. Marguerite Sullivan Grant, 89, of 143 Wylie St. died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Easley.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Williams officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of York County, Mrs. Grant was a daughter of the late Jonas Barber and Mary Hester Garrison Sullivan. She was the widow of Walter Clio "Skeet" Grant. She was a retired teacher with the Chester County schools. She was a member of the Variety Study Club, Bethel United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are her son, Tim Grant of Franklin, Tenn.; her daughter, Hester G. Barker of Easley; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church and at home.

Shelby Knight

LANCASTER - Mr. Shelby Deke Knight, 55, of 401 Gillscreek Drive died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Life Freewill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joe Moore and Mitchy Ingram officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Knight was a son of the late Ansel Armstrong Knight and Sudie Lowery Knight. He was a retired independent truck driver. He was a Mason with Camp Creek Masonic Lodge No. 317, and was a member of New Life Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda K. Starnes Knight; five sons, Ruben Gene Knight of Lancaster, Steven Paul Knight of Fort Mill, Robert Gilmore and Barry Gilmore, both of Lancaster, and Brian Gilmore of Charlotte; two sisters, Brenda McManus of Lancaster and Martha Smith of Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Hwy.

Davis Gunn Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Davis "Bill" Howard Gunn Jr., 66, of 1186 Springdale Road died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at home.

A church service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, Catawba Ward, with Bishop Pieter Reynders officiating and Carson Blue and Gilbert Blue assisting.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Gunn was a son of the late Davis H. Gunn Sr. and Beulah Franks Gunn. He worked for the S.C. Department of Transportation for 22 years, and was a foreman.

Surviving are his son, David Gunn Sr. of Rock Hill; his daughter, Nancy J. Gunn of Rock Hill; his stepbrother, Tommy Goins of Lakeland, Fla.; his stepsister, Vernie Merritt of Fort Mill; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and other times at the home of his son, David Gunn, 109 Arbalest Court.
