Jerry Phillips

LAKE WYLIE - Mr. Jerry Phillips, 45, of 6314 Lake Wylie Road died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock hill.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home in York, with the Rev. Keith Hunter officiating. Burial will be at Uniondale Cemetery in York.

A native of York County, Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Robert Saye Phillips and Sarah Durham Phillips. He attended the public schools of York County and was a landscaper. He attended the Solid Rock Fellowship Church in Gastonia, N.C.

Surviving are six brothers, Robert Phillips, Alexander Phillips, Donald Phillips and David Phillips, all of Lake Wylie, and Paul Phillips and Richard Phillips, both of Gastonia; and three sisters, Martha P. June, Mary E. Phillips and Sallie P. Woods, all of Gastonia.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Ulysses Sanders

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ulysses Sanders, 76, of 337-A Jones Ave. died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Wright Funeral Home in York.

Fred Starnes

YORK - Mr. Fred Starnes, 79, of 120 Maplewood Lane died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Center Emmanuel AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Mary L. Adams officiating. Burial will be at Uniondale Cemetery.

A native of Tirzah, Mr. Starnes was a son of the late Fred Clinton Starnes and Sarah Jackson Starnes. He attended the public schools in York County and was a graduate of Clinton College in Rock Hill. He served as chef at various restaurants, including the Rock Hill Elks Club, Watkins Grill and The Varsity. He was member of Center Emmanuel AME Zion Church, where he served as pastor's steward. He was the widower of Blanche T. Starnes.

Surviving are his sister, Sadie Starnes Gist of Catawba; and his brother, William O. Starnes of Tirzah.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Dorothy Wilson

ROCK HILL - Ms. Dorothy Ann Wilson, 54, of 114 S. Wilson St. died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be noon Thursday at First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. L.L. Hancock officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Miss Wilson was a daughter of the late James Gill and Inez Brown. She attended Emmett Scott High School and worked as a registered nurse. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, David Bernard Wilson and Anthony James Wilson, both of Rock Hill; her stepson, Dorean Talford of Washington; two brothers, Jackie Brown and Robert Moore, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Janice Brown and Julia Mae Brown, both of Rock Hill; two half-sisters, Mary Wilson Smith and Nancy Wilson Page, both of Rock Hill; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home.

James Belton
GREAT FALLS - Mr. James "Jimmy" Belton, 71, of 739 Pearidge Road died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. M. L. Golden officiating. The Revs. P. Hicklin, E. Jeter, William Hayes and J. Gambrell will be assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Great Falls, Mr. Belton was a son of the late Chevis Belton and Mary Lee Belton. He worked at the former J.P. Stevens Co. and was retired from Great Falls Middle School. He was a member of First Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and leader of the senior choir. He was president of the men's choir. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 127 and worked with the recreation department.

Surviving are three daughters, Ann Hayden of the home, Ester Lee Squirewell and Sadie Johnson, both of Great Falls; two brothers, Chevis Belton Jr. and Ernest Belton, both of Patterson, N.J.; four sisters, Ruth Horton and Cleo Hayes, both of Great Falls, Naomi Ferguson of Patterson and Dorothy L. Thompson of Hopkins; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home and from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Washington Funeral Home.

Masonic rites will be 6:30 tonight at the funeral home.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

John Carothers

CHARLOTTE - Mr. John Mason Carothers, formerly of Rock Hill, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare Renaissance.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at China Grove AME Zion Church, with the Rev. B.J. Davis officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Carothers was a son of the late John Rainey Carothers and Lillie McCaw Carothers.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Robinson Funeral Home in Rock Hill is in charge.

Jonathan Conner

YORK - Mr. Jonathan Vander Conner, 66, of 610 Osteen Road died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at home.

The services will be private.

A native of York County, Mr. Conner was a son of the late Charlie Franklin Conner and Beulah Robinson Conner. He was retired from Rock Hill Telephone Co. and was a retired U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Eunice Black Conner; his son, Terry Conner of York; his daughter, Tammy Conner Crawford of York; his brother, Charlie F. Conner Jr. of California; three sisters, Mildred Conner Tucker of Lesslie, Mary Conner Adkins of Fort Mill and Ruby Conner Phillips of Rock Hill; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 7 tonight at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice & Community Care, 325 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Bratton Funeral Home is in charge.

Corrie Feely Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Corrie L. Feely Sr. of 723 Douglas St. died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at home.

Arrangements will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home.

Paul Hammond

KERSHAW - Mr. Paul Robert Hammond, 82, of 6585 Kershaw Camden Highway died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at home.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Kershaw City Cemetery, with the Revs. Steve Miller and Hugh McKinney officiating.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Hammond was a son of the late Jeter Francis Hammond and Lillie Floyd Hammond. He was a member of the Center Grove Baptist Church and served on the board of directors. He was also a member of the adult men's Sunday school class. He constructed the Center Grove Baptist Church building. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Reba West Hammond; two sons, R. Larry Hammond and Terry S. Hammond, both of Kershaw; his daughter, Linda H. Taylor of Kershaw; his sister, Beulah H. Greene of Hopkins; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home Kershaw Chapel and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Center Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 236 Scout Cabin Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Sedrick Jacobs

LANCASTER - Mr. Sedrick Gerrie Jacobs, 60, of 3325 Loraine Lane died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Lamar Jackson officiating. Burial will be at Harpers Ferry Cemetery.

A native of Pembroke, N.C., Mr. Jacobs was a son of the late Giles Jacobs and Corina Strickland Jacobs.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Starnes Jacobs; his son, Gerrie Dean Jacobs of Lancaster; two daughters, Sandy Marie Jacobs and Samantha Ann Jacobs, both of Lancaster; two brothers, Ed "Boots" Jacobs of Pembroke and Billy Dean Jacobs of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; five sisters, Millie Collins, Rosalee Haymon, Arlene Wicker, Betty Lois Jacobs and Pamela Jean Lowery; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home Lancaster Chapel and other times at the home.

Gretchen Mack

FORT MILL - Mrs. Gretchen Mack, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Charlotte, with the Revs. Rollo Leimer and William Gittner officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen City Cemetery.

A native of Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Mack was a nationally ranked diver. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma. She was an elementary school teacher. She started the Water Baby's Swim School. She was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church and was involved in missions around the world.

Surviving are her daughter, Gina Ambrose of San Jose, Calif.; her grandchild; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at McEwen Funeral Service Pineville Chapel in Pineville, N.C., and one hour before the service at the church.

Rachel McCarter

CLOVER - Mrs. Rachel Virginia Bolin McCarter, 62, of 1896 Edge Park Road died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hickory Grove Church of God, with the Revs. Roger Nix and Larry Ben Moss officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. McCarter was a daughter of Ethel D. Bolin of York and the late Lewis Ingram Bolin. She was a retired seamstress with Linda B. Apparel. She was a member of Hickory Grove Church of God.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, James McCarter; two daughters, Billie McCarter Phillips and Betty McCarter Hoyle, both of Clover; her brother, Carl Rose of Chester; her sister, Ethel Dover of York; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Daniel Mitchell

ROCK HILL - Mr. Daniel Twiford Mitchell, 55, of 248 Willwood Circle died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Chester County Hospital.

The service will be private.

A native of Sewickley, Pa., Mr. Mitchell was a son of the late Charles Wesley Mitchell Sr. and Helen Ruth Twiford Mitchell. He worked with Walker White in Columbia. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are two brothers, Charles W. Mitchell Jr. of Webster, N.Y., and Robert Bruce Mitchell of Beaver, Pa.

Anderson Funeral Home in Beaver, Pa., is in charge.

Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel is in charge of local announcements.

Deborah Oxendine

FORT MILL - Mrs. Deborah Elizabeth Cobb Oxendine, 46, of 605 Link St., Apt. 2B, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. today at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. today at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Oxendine was a daughter of Gleeneta Moffitt Cobb of Charlotte and the late Edward Cobb. She was of the Presbyterian faith. She was a homemaker.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Timmy Oxendine of Rock Hill; her daughter, Julia Marie Rutledge of Rock Hill; and two brothers, Eddie Cobb and Jimmy Cobb, both of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity or church of one's choice.

Mattie Thompson

RICHBURG - Mrs. Mattie C. Phillips Thompson, 81, of 104 Circle Drive died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Phillip's Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rosalind Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Mount Moriah AME Zion Church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Grover Cleve Craine and Mary White "Gus" Craine. She was a member of Mount Moriah AME Zion Church, where she was a choir member. She was a member of St. Phillip's Baptist Church. She attended Chester County schools. She was a retired food service attendant.

Surviving are her son, Wilbert Craig Jr. of Richburg; her daughter, Annie Mae Simpson of Richburg; two brothers, Cleve Craine Jr. of Chester and William Craine of Richburg; 11 grandchildren, including Christine Craig of Richburg and Tasha Craig of the home; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.
