Georgia Dickert

CLINTON - Miss Georgia Dickert, 94, of Clinton, formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Presbyterian Home.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Laurelwood Cemetery, with Dr. T. Mark Verdy officiating.

A native of Orangeburg, Miss Dickert was a daughter of the late George Killian and Cora Linton Dickert. She was valedictorian of her class at Rock Hill High School and received her bachelor's degree in music with honors from Converse College. She taught piano lessons at Central High School and privately in her home. She was a life member and former president of the Rock Hill Music Club. She was founder and sponsor of the Juvenile Music Club. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. She also played the piano for Sunday school and was the organist for one year.

The family will receive friends today after the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1011, Rock Hill, SC 29731 or the Georgia B. Dickert Endowed Scholarship for piano students at Converse College, 580 Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302.

Joseph Gesell

SPARTANBURG - Mr. Joseph Michael Gesell, 38, of 1281 Bethesda Road died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Fort Mill Funeral Home.

James Helms

MONROE, N.C. - Mr. James L. Helms, 86, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Union Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at McEwen Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Lakeland Memorial Park.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. Helms was a son of the late Will W. Helms and Mary Jane Stephenson Helms. He was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co.

Surviving are his wife, Christine H. Helms; his brother, Otis Helms of Rock Hill; and two sisters, Jean Rowell of Rock Hill and Kathleen Hinson of Monroe.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 4013 New Town Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173.

James Henning

ROCK HILL - Mr. James Earl Henning, 62, of 2655 Crystal Creek Drive died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Glenrock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Flack officiating. Burial will be private.

A native of Oswego, N.Y., Mr. Henning was a son of the late James Henning and Marion Pelkey Henning. He was retired from the Sonoco Co. in Charlotte.

Surviving are his wife, Dena Henning; two sons, Donald Henning of Chester and Daniel Henning of Fort Mill; three daughters, Melissa Hubbard and Margaret Hubbard, both of Indian Land, and Deanna Crump of Clover; two sisters, Sharon Hess and Carol Jean Hollis, both of Florida; and 13 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 8 tonight at home.

Fort Mill Funeral Home is in charge.

Syble Jumper

YORK - Mrs. Syble Privette Jumper, 77, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home Rock Hill Chapel. Burial will be at Lake View Memory Gardens.

A native of Great Falls, Mrs. Jumper was a daughter of the late Claude R. Privette and Bessie Threatt Privette. She was retired from J.P. Stevens Industrial Plant. She also was a carrier for The Herald.

Surviving are her husband, Donald M. Jumper; her son, LaVaughn W. Horne of Chester; her daughter, Gloria H. Brown of Rock Hill; her sister, Estelle Webb Henderson of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Juanita McConnell

LANCASTER - Mrs. Juanita Pearl McConnell, 88, of 1006 Forest Drive died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at home.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Gilbert Rowell officiating.

A native of Big Clifty, Ky., Mrs. McConnell was a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Ella Ann Pearl. She was a member of First ARP Church. She was a faithful member of the Nannie Millen Circle. She was a homemaker. She graduated from Louisville General Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse. She also had served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts and as a Girl Scout leader. She was the widow of Dr. Harvey E. McConnell.

Surviving are her son, Harvey E. "Mac" McConnell Jr. of Lancaster; her daughter, Betsy Rushing of Lancaster; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home and at the cemetery after the service.

Hannah Ross

VAN WYCK - Mrs. Hannah Stewart Ross, 84, died Friday, March 28, 2003, in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Waxhaw, N.C., with the Rev. Jacob Chisholm officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Ross was a daughter of the late James Stewart Sr. and Sally McIlwain Stewart. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, John Lee Caster; her brother, James Stewart Jr. of Van Wyck; and two sisters, Ida Crawford and Gerturde Ross, both of Van Wyck.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Crawford Funeral Home.

Willie Adams Jr.

COLUMBIA - Mr. Willie "Tank" Adams Jr., formerly of Great Falls, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Central Carolina Health and Rehabilitation Center.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Diane Bowden, 5215 Bowden Drive, Great Falls.

Arrangements will be announced by Washington Funeral Home.

Bobby Allen Sr.

LOS ANGELES - Mr. Bobby Lee Allen Sr. of 340 E. 122nd St. died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Martin Luther King Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. C.S. Sanders officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery in Rock Hill.

A native of Kershaw County, Mr. Allen was a son of the late John Arthur Allen Sr. and Rebecca Simpson Allen. He was a member of Opportunity Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school superintendent and member of both the deacon board and the choir. He was a U.S. Army veteran and attended York County schools. He attended Benedict College in Columbia and Delmingo University. He taught in Georgia schools and worked at the Rock Hill Post Office. He taught at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill and in the L.A. Unified School District. He also taught at California Behavioral Center for Adults with disabilities.

Surviving are his wife, Verna A. Allen; three sons, Bobby Lee Allen Jr. and Johnny T. Allen, both of Rock Hill, and Larry Jones of Richburg; three daughters, Galatia Wilkerson of Atwater, Calif., Barbara M. Ervin of Rock Hill and Bernadette Allen Kirk of Charlotte; two stepsons, Clifton Harris and Claude Harris Jr., both of Los Angeles; three sisters, Viola Talliferro of Rock Hill, Virginia Williams of Charlotte and Margaret Jackson of Trenton, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Roy and Barbara Ervin, 522 Lucky Court.

The body may be viewed from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home and from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the church.

Evelyn Bennett

FORT MILL - Mrs. Evelyn Lowe Bennett, 66, of 109 W. Summersby St. died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park, Hollis Lakes Road.

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Bennett was a daughter of the late Buren Lewis and Alma Reed Lowe. She was of the Presbyterian faith. She graduated from West Mecklenburg High School and Presbyterian School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse with York County Health Department.

Surviving are her husband, William T. "Temp" Bennett; two daughters, Tracy B. Miller and Holly B. Hamrick, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Shirley Lowe and Terry Bailey, both of Charlotte; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Piedmont Medical Center Heart Center, 222 S. Herlong Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

James Burgess Jr.

HICKORY GROVE - Mr. James William Burgess Jr., 33, of 6039 S.C. 97 died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Freddie Fields officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park, Hollis Lakes Road.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Burgess was a son of James William Burgess Sr. of Rock Hill and Elaine Baker of Shelby, N.C. He was a member of Friendship Church of God in Rock Hill and worked with Hall Dilectric Machinery in Rock Hill.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Angela Allen Burgess; his son, Tristan Burgess of the home; his daughter, Skyllar Burgess of the home; his brother, Lee Burgess of Rock Hill; his sister, Darlene Harper of Kings Mountain, N.C.; his stepson, Del Porter of the home; his stepdaughter, Lindsay Porter of the home; his stepmother, Sandy Burgess of Rock Hill; and his paternal grandmother, Frances Burgess of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the home of his parents, 763 N. Confederate Ave.

Willie Crosby

BLAIR - Mr. Willie Crosby of Blair died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Gethsemane Baptist Church, with the Rev. Norris Turner officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Blair, Mr. Crosby was a son of the late Carrie People and Willie Crosby. He attended McCrorey-Liston High School. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He worked for Tyson Foods in Monroe, N.C., and for Springs Industries in Lancaster.

Surviving are his wife, Rosa R. Crosby; two sons, Michael Richardson of Chester and Steven Richardson of Fayetteville, N.C.; his daughter, Kenya Crosby of Great Falls; three sisters, Vermelle C. Robertson of Columbia, Lillie B. Crosby Mitchell of Beaufort and Betty Crosby of Blair; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Washington Funeral Home in Great Falls and other times at the home of his daughter, Kenya Crosby, 134 Washington St.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Sarah Everson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sarah "Virginia" Kemp Everson, 91, of Rock Hill died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Spring Arbor.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Harvest Baptist Church, with her grandson, the Rev. Carl Wood, officiating.

A native of Wheeling, W. Va., Mrs. Everson was a daughter of the late Edward Walter Kemp and Adeline Metcalf Kemp. She was a homemaker and a member of the Security Baptist Church. She was the widow of Jay Burgess Everson.

Surviving are her daughter, Joyce Loretta Wood of Rock Hill; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Security Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1848 Smith Circle, Rock Hill, SC 29730 or Hospice & Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Anniebell Greene

FORT LAWN - Mrs. Anniebell McNeil Greene, 72, of 960 River Road died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at home.

A memorial service will be noon today at Cauthen Funeral Home Lancaster Chapel, with the Rev. Calvin Snipes officiating.

A native of Caldwell County, N.C., Mrs. Greene was a daughter of the late Arney Ray McNeil and America Walker McNeil. She was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are four sons, David Greene of Fort Lawn, Allen D. Greene and Roger W. Greene, both of Lancaster, and Kenny L. Greene of Fort Lawn; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Thomas Holley

CHESTER - Mr. Thomas James Holley, 63, of 2663 Ashford Road died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., with the Rev. Moses Lightner officiating and the Rev. Cleatis Jones assisting. Burial will be at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church cemetery in Fairfield County.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. Holley was a son of the late James "Son" Holley and Alice Johnson Holley. He was a member of Mount Visit AME Zion Church and attended Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Fairfield County. He attended Fairfield County schools and was a former logger. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his son, Ronnie Foster of Columbia; two daughters, Teresa Brice and Regina Brice, both of Chester; his brother, Floyd Holley of Irvington, N.J.; three sisters, Bernice Holley of Newark, N.J., Carnell Holley of Charlotte and Eunice Moore of Baltimore; his stepson, Tommy Foster of Edgemoor; eight stepdaughters, Ernestine Strong, Barbara Foster, Ruth Weathers, Linda Williams, Hattie Robinson, Terry Foster and Sandra McGraw, all of Winnsboro, and Iris Sanchez of Charlotte; his grandchild; 12 stepgrandchildren; four step-greatgrandchildren; and his companion, Henrietta Foster of Winnsboro.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to the hour of service Thursday at the funeral home.
