Virginia Stone

NEWBERRY - Mrs. Virginia S. Abrams Stone, 84, of Old Whitmire Highway died Monday, March 31, 2003.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon officiating. Burial will be at Newberry Memorial Gardens.

A native of Spartanburg County, Mrs. Stone was a daughter of the late Samuel Walter and Lois Haynes Smith. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member and former teacher of the Kyria Sunday school class. She also was a member of the Parks Prayer Circle.

Surviving are three daughters, Gloria Abrams Long of Newberry, Linda Abrams Culp of Fort Lawn and Kay Abrams Lyons of Deltona, Fla.; her brother, Gerald Smith of Phoenix; her sister, Gwendolyn Page of Spartanburg; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family is at the home of Joel Long, 936 Folk Road, Newberry.

Brona Young

ROCK HILL - Ms. Brona Lee Robinson Young, 86, of Morningside Assisted Living Center, 1830 W. Main St., formerly of 809 Annafrel St., died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville in Pineville, N.C.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Revs. Bernie Lewis and David Kemp officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park, Cherry Road.

A native of Jackson County, N.C., Ms. Young was a daughter of the late Thomas Jackson Robinson and Effie Bryson Robinson. She was a member of First Assembly of God and was retired from Hoechst Celanese.

Surviving are her son, Conrad Young of Rock Hill; her daughter, Juanita B. Harrison of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, 1108 Dunlap Roddey Road.

Linda Adams
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Linda Louise Adams of 339 Baker St. died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roderick Pendleton officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park-Hollis Lakes.

A native of York County, Mrs. Adams was a daughter of Maggie Adams and the late Wardell Jackson. She was member of Agape Ministries, where she was a member of the choir and usher board. She attended York County schools and Emmett Scott High School.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her son, Rodney Adams of Rock Hill; three brothers, Johnny O. Adams, Frederick Adams and Michael Adams, all of Rock Hill; five sisters, Vanessa K. Mitchell, Serina G. Adams, Dorothy Chisolm, Doris Neely and Patrice Nichols, all of Rock Hill; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends at home and at 4007 Champion Road. The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Robinson Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at noon Wednesday.

Carolyn Brown

CLOVER - Mrs. Carolyn Thomas Brown, 66, of 305 Cedarhurst Drive died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Clover First Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Stanford officiating. Burial will be at Whitmire Cemetery.

A native of Whitmire, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Della Davis and stepdaughter of the late George Davis. She was retired from the Clover school district.

Surviving are her husband, Charles H. Brown; her daughter, Jennifer Addis of Clover; and her sister, Valeria D. Lewis of Whitmire.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 825 N. Main St., Clover, SC 29710.

Sarah Brown

UNION - Mrs. Sarah Benfield Brown, 79, formerly of York, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Oakmont Nursing Home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today Bratton Funeral Home, with the Rev. James L. Correll officiating. Burial will be at Oakbrook Memorial Park in Greenwood.

A native of York County, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Jack K. Benfield Sr. and Annie Lee McFarland. She was a public school teacher and a graduate of Winthrop University. She was a published poet and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Harold M. Brown.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathryn Brown Ramsperger of Rockville, Md.; her son, Stephen Benfield Brown of Abbeville; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

LaQuadra Heath

ROCK HILL - Miss LaQuadra Marketia Heath of 1316 Joyce Court died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, with Elder Anita Minor officiating.

A native of York County, Miss Heath was a daughter of Robert Burris and the Rev. Fredonia Heath; her stepfather, Clarence Jennings, and her stepmother, Shelia Burris, both of Rock Hill. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church and was a member of the usher board. She graduated from Rock Hill High School.

Surviving in addition to her parents are three brothers, DonTavis Mackey of the home, Zay Burris of Rock Hill and Travis Boozer of Greenville; four sisters, Shameka Burris, Kisha Douglas, Toria Burris and Cierra Burris, all of Rock Hill; her paternal grandfather, J.C. Perry of Rock Hill; her maternal grandmother, Peggy Mann Heath of Rock Hill; and her step-grandmother, Georgetta Perry of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at home and at 648 Simpson St.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Alfreda Hinton

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Alfreda Walls Hinton of 942 Crawford Road died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Red Oak AME Zion Church in Edgemoor, with the Rev. Gary Smith officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Hinton was a daughter of Charles Johnson and Robbie Davis Johnson.

She was a member of Gethsemane Church, where she was a member of the choir. She attended York County schools and was a graduate of Rock Hill High School.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Robert E. Hinton; three brothers, Chris Massey, Otis Moore and Charles Leonard Moise, all of Rock Hill; three sisters, Angela Moore and Rosa Davis, both of Fort Mill, and Doris Douglas of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends at the home. The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Robinson Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Catherine Johnson

UNION - Mrs. Catherine Townsend Johnson, 73, formerly of South 5th St., Lockhart, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church, with the Revs. Richard Conyers and Ben Hill officiating. Burial will be at Bullock's Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

A native of Lockhart, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Willie and Edna Revis Townsend. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from Milliken Co., Lockhart Plant. She was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church. She was the widow of Roy David Johnson.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann Horton of York; her son, Donnie Johnson of Union; her brother, Raymond Townsend of Lockhart; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home and other times at the home of Donnie Johnson, 402 Seigler Road, Union.

The body will be placed at the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Evelyn Lowery

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Evelyn Whitesides Lowery, 90, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at White Oak Manor.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Tom Sherer officiating.

A native of Social Circle, Ga., Mrs. Lowery was the daughter of the late Walter Barron Whitesides and Nora Lee Pye Whitesides. She was a beautician and was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her brother, Charles O. Whitesides of Osage, Iowa and her sister, Opal W. Cobb of McConnells.

Bass-Cauthen Funeral Homes are in charge.

Ian McAlister

FORT MILL - Mr. Ian Scott McAlister, 15, of 1049 Kilpatrick Lane died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rogers Memorial ARP Church with the Rev. Brian Phipps officiating.

A native of Greensboro, N.C., Mr. McAlister was the son of Toni McAlister. He attended Rogers Memorial ARP Church and was a ninth-grader at Fort Mill High School, where he was a member of the Fort Mill JROTC and drill team.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his grandparents, Beverly and Marshall Johnson of Greensboro, N.C. and Ray McAlister of Beverly Hills, Fla.; and his great-grandmother, Bertha Elton of Baltimore.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service.

Boyce Robinson

LANCASTER - Mr. Boyce Alex Robinson, 81, of 3127 Flat Creek Road died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Pat Minihane officiating. Burial with fireman's honors will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Robinson was a son of the late Coleman Labon Robinson and Ella Hunter Robinson. He owned and operated Robinson Chair Co. and then worked and retired from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. He was a founding member of the Antioch Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, a mason with Antioch Masonic Lodge No. 399 and a World War II Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Melba Knight Robinson; his son, David Robinson of Charlotte; his daughter, Myra Beacham of Lancaster; his sister, Ruth Ray of Lancaster; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Thomas Robinson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Thomas "Tommy" Wylie Robinson, 66, of 1667 Minnie Lane died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Revs. Rick Sturgis and Gary Huddleston officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Robinson was a son of the late Thomas Lewis Robinson and Annie Belle Barfield Robinson. He was a charter member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was retired from Celanese Corp. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the American Legion and a mason. He was the widower of Myrtle Agnes Thrift Thomas Robinson.

Surviving are four sons, Frank Thomas of York, Gene Thomas, Reid Thomas and Michael Lee Thomas, all of Rock Hill; two daughters, Julie Carter and Carol Erieau Knight, both of York; his brother, Ray Robinson of Laurel, Md.; his sister, Brenda Brown of Rock Hill; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and other times at the home of Frank Thomas, 325 John Thrift Road in York.

Mary Stewart

YORK - Mrs. Mary Willie Marshall Stewart, 64, of 123 Lowry Row died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

Mrs. Stewart was the widow of Roosevelt Clinzo Stewart.

Arrangements will be announced by Wright Funeral Home.

James Sturgis

ROCK HILL - Mr. James Albert Sturgis, 90, of 502 Heckle Blvd. died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Rock Hill Healthcare Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Laurelwood Cemetery, with Dr. Timothy McClendon and the Rev. Michael Ritter officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Sturgis was a son of the late Ewell W. Sturgis and Annie Enloe Sturgis. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Browning Sykes Sunday school class and an honorary member of the administrative board. He was a retired farmer and was active in the S.C. Farm Bureau Association. He was a 1932 graduate of Rock Hill High School.

Surviving are his brother, Paul Sturgis of Rock Hill; and his sister, Annie Belle Dodson of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at the home of Paul Sturgis, 1154 Myrtle Drive.

Memorials may be made to St. Johns United Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.
