DALZELL — Harold E. Cato, 85, husband of Floy Heming Cato, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at a local nursing center.

Clyde Richard “Dick” Connelly, widower of Marvel Hulda Holtz Connelly, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at his home. Born in St. Thomas, Minn., he was a son of the late James Connelly and Mary Boechman Connelly. A graveside service was held at Saint Thomas Catholic Church cemetery in Minnesota. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at St. Anne Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Eugene Ells, 76, husband of Jean Adele Ells, died today, Feb. 9, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Lee E. Fisette Jr., 70, died today, Feb. 9, 2001, at a local nursing center.

REUBEN N. GARRETT

Reuben N. Garrett died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 27, 1945, in Andrews, he was a son of the late Patricia Garrett Anderson.

Silas Wilson Jr. died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born June 22, 1954, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Silas Wilson and Charslina McMillan Wilson.

FLOYD BAXTER

MANNING — Floyd Baxter, 67, husband of Julia Mae Baxter, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home after an illness. Born Oct. 31, 1933, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Willie Baxter and Annie Thames Baxter. Mr. Baxter attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church. He loved music and was well-known for his guitar playing. He was a member of the Five Singing Brothers and the Ever-Ready Gospel Singers. He was employed by the city of Manning for several years until his health declined. Survivors besides his wife of the home include seven sons, Willie Baxter and James Baxter, both of Manning, Floyd Baxter, Ervin Baxter, Michael Baxter and Raymond Baxter, all of Charlotte, N.C., and Otis Baxter of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Joann Pearson of Alcolu, Lucinda Baxter of Manning and Minister Dorothy McCray of Effingham; two grandchildren he reared, Kendrick Baxter and Jamie Baxter, both of Manning; a brother, Thomas Baxter of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Bessie Pringle of Manning; and 12 additional grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church in the Paxville community of Manning with the Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 102 Richburg St. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN W. BRAMHALL

FLORENCE — On Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, John W. Bramhall, 101, Bible Teacher of The Air and servant of Jesus Christ, was called into the presence of the Lord he loved and faithfully served for many years. Mr. Bramhall was an itinerant preacher and fellowshipped with the Christians at Florence Bible Chapel in Florence. He was born in Sheffield, England, April 23, 1899, coming to Rochester, N.Y., with his parents in 1911. He became a Christian at age 14 and was preaching on street corners at 16. He married Enga Esler, who died in 1985. He ministered in Canada and the West Indies as well as the continental United States. In recent years his ministry was in North and South Carolina and Georgia. “Brother John,” as he was called by many, was a conference speaker and had a radio program in Charlotte, Laurinburg and Fayetteville, N.C., until he moved to Florence in 1990 when his program was aired in Lake City and Florence. He was the author of many booklets and several books. “Living His Life,” a primer for new Christians, has been translated into Spanish and a number of other languages. “I Am My Beloved’s” and “My Beloved Is Mine” are compilations of monthly ministry letters that were mailed out for many years. His most popular booklet, “The Joy Of Being With Christ,” has been widely used to comfort the bereaved. While living in Sumter in the late ‘30s and ‘40s, Mr. Bramhall came to Florence to preach and conduct Bible studies. This resulted in Florence Bible Chapel on Second Loop Road. Survivors include his wife, Margaret “Kate” McCoy McLaughlin Bramhall of Florence; a daughter, Gladys Valcare of Rochester, N.Y.; a son, Robert J. Bramhall of Matthews, N.C.; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Waters-Powell Funeral Home chapel in Florence. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, N.C. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Christian Missions in Many Lands, P.O. Box 13, Spring Lake, NJ 07762, or to the charity of your choice.

WILLIE BRAND

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Willie “Heyward” Brand, 70, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. Born Aug. 22, 1930, in Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of the late William Sampson Brand and Vina McCray Brand. Mr. Brand attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth he joined St. John AME Church. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge. Survivors include three sons, Edward Smith of New Zion, S.C., William Heyward Brand of Sumter and Martinez Brand of California; two daughters, Tacoma Brand of West California and Libby Ransom of Germany; two brothers, Willie Davis of Norwalk, Conn., and John Jay Burgess of Kingstree, S.C.; a sister, Mable Burgess of New York, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John AME Church in the Workman community of Kingstree, with the Rev. B.L. Greene, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, John J. and Marjorie Burgess, Route 2, Box 161, Lynchburg Road, in the Mouzon community of Kingstree. JAMES M. DICKERSON

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Retired U.S. Navy Senior Master Chief James M. Dickerson, husband of Louise A. Dickerson, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Virginia Bach General Hospital. Born Nov. 25, 1937, he was a son of the late Susan Thomas Dickerson. Mr. Dickerson attended the public schools in Sumter, S.C. He was affiliated with New Hope UME Church in his youth. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956. He retired after more than 31 years of serving his country. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Craig Dickerson and James C. Dickerson, both of the home; a daughter, Monica L. Dickerson of Pennsylvania; a brother, Edward Dickerson of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Alice D. Thompson of Columbia, Md., and Peggy “Jeannie” D. DuRant of Sumter; three half-brothers; and two half-sisters. PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Loretta “Ret” Harvin, 54, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001. Born Feb. 17, 1946, in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Willie and Eunice Baxter Harvin. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she attended St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church and Friendship AME Church, both in Silver, S.C. Survivors include two brothers, Willie E. Harvin of Manning, S.C., and Charles Harvin of Garysburg, N.C.; a sister-in-law; a special niece who has been with her all her life, Christine Harvin; a special friend, Horace West, and dearest friends, Jannie Thames of Miami, Fla., and Ruby Lee Thomas of Punta Gorda. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Willie Lee and Jessie Billups Harvin, Route 6, Box 98-G, C.A. Harvin Highway, Manning, S.C. ALICE L. HUDSON

Alice Lewis Hudson, 72, wife of 53 years to the Rev. Richard Hudson, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 13, 1928, in Neptune, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Irving and Dorothy Van Brunt Lewis. Mrs. Hudson was a member of Southside Baptist Church. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Richard Hudson Jr. of Sumter and Any Hudson of Columbia, Tenn.; a daughter, Angie Hudson of Florence; a brother, Howard Lewis of Millsboro, Del.; a sister, Dolores Murray of Indian Head, Md.; four grandchildren, Michael Hudson of Lancaster, Tracy Strickland of Dalzell, Joseph “Curt” Hudson of Sumter and Kevin Bozeman of Florence; and four great-grandchildren, Sara Grace Hudson of Lancaster and Joshua, Noah and Leslie Strickland, all of Dalzell. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Hudson. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating. CADES — Handy McFadden Sr., husband of Beulah Burgess McFadden, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. Isaac and Selema McFadden. Mr. McFadden was a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Lake City and the Gospel Song Birds Singers. Survivors besides his wife of the home include five sons, Micheal McFadden and Chuckie Burgess, both of Cades, Handy McFadden Jr. of Florence, Stanley McFadden of Lake City and Ron Burgess of Charlotte, N.C.; six daughters, Jackie Burgess, Jeanette McFadden and Gwen Burgess, all of Cades, Sarah McFadden and Candus McFadden, both of Wilmington, N.C., and Shameka Lloyd of Manning; a brother, Wallace McFadden of Charlotte, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Believers Holiness Convention Center in Coward with the Rev. Bobby Ray Floyd officiating, assisted by the Rev. James E. Alston. NEW YORK, N.Y. — Izell Terrell Nelson, 13, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Harlem Hospital in New York, N.Y. Born Sept. 1, 1987, in New York, N.Y., he was a son of Bobbie Jean Nelson and Izell Davis. He was reared by his maternal grandparents, Eugene Nelson and Ruth Blackwell Nelson. He was currently attending Public School No. 79 in New York, where he participated in many activities. Survivors besides his father and his mother include his maternal grandparents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church, Goodwill Church Road, in Manning, S.C., with the Rev. Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Cokley Richburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of his grand-uncle and grand-aunt, John and Ora Nelson, Route 6, Box 1637, in the Red Hill community of Manning. PINEWOOD — Johnnie Lee Parker died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his home, Route 1, Box 434. Born March 3, 1946, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rufus Lawson and Victoria Richardson. He was a stepson of the late Canty and Carrie Parker. In his youth, he joined St. Phillip RMUE Church and attended Clarendon County public schools. He worked for the ECB Construction Co. for many years. Survivors include two sons, Daniel Parker of Bronx, N.Y., and the Rev. Joshua Parker of Louisville, Ky.; seven brothers, the Rev. Nathaniel Richardson of Manning, Duvall Galliard of Cambridge, Mass., and Samuel Lawson, Rufus Lawson, James Lawson, John Lawson and William Lawson, all of Charleston; seven sisters, Phyllis Campbell and Georgia Major, both of Cambridge, Mass., Deloris Davis, Nora Lawson, Carrie Hargrove, Bundetta Lawson and Lorraine Lawson; an adopted brother, Samuel Wendell Richardson of New York, N.Y.; three adopted sisters, Rose Hickman of Columbia, Rhunetta Samuel of Newark, N.J., and Elpenia Bell; and a grandchild. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Community Funeral Home in Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Phillip RMUE Church with the Rev. Warren Hatcher, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Joshua Parker and the Rev. Amos Hatcher. Burial will be in the church cemetery. MANNING — Carrie Richburg, widow of James Richburg Sr., died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at NHC Healthcare Center in Sumter. Born Sept. 30, 1912, in Manning in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Antrium and Amanda Simmons. In her youth, she joined Fellowship Baptist Church, and later served as superintendent of the church school, choir leader and president of the missionary society. Later, she joined Community Deliverance Temple and served as mother of the church. Survivors include three sons, James Richburg and Leroy Richburg, both of Manning and Willie Richburg of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Clara Richburg of Columbia; 14 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Blackwell-Jenkins Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Deliverance Temple, U.S. 301 North, with Bishop Jeffery Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Floyd Briggs and the Rev. Sylvester Hicks. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from her home, 305 Colins St. The family will receive friends at her home. Blackwell-Jenkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — John “Pa” Simon, husband of Vermell W. Simon, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Carolina Pines Medical Center in Hartsville. Born April 1, 1918, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Solomon and Ella Simon. Mr. Simon attended Lee County public schools. He joined New Zion AME Church in his youth. Later, he joined St. Mark Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of the home include four sons, Willie Lee Simon of Minneapolis, Minn., John Edward Simon and Solomon Simon, both of Wisacky, and James Simon of Bishopville; a daughter, Lillie Belle Josey of Wisacky; two brothers, Roland Simon of Bishopville and Wesley Simon Jr. of Elliott; three sisters, Ruth Mae Reames of Bishopville, and Sarah Simon and Ethel Simon, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. T.O. Everett, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 46 Lighty Lane, Wisacky. Square Deal Funeral Home in Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

MANNING — Solomon Cantey, husband of Odessa T. Cantey, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Intermedical Hospital in Columbia.
He was born April 29, 1935, in Clarendon County.

Services will be announced by Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home.

ESTELLE C. DuRANT

PINEWOOD — Estelle C. DuRant, widow of Algie DuRant, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001.
Mrs. DuRant was born Jan. 15, 1926, in Richmond, Va.
