Albert Wright Jr. died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 19, 1935, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Albert Wright Sr. and Marie Canty Wright. GREENVILLE — John William Davis Sr., 72, husband of Rhoda Hodge Davis, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late John A. and Mary Etta Powell Davis. Mr. Davis was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from the city of Greenville Police Department in 1983. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife include a son, John William Davis Jr. of El Paso, Texas; two daughters, Kay Davis Young of Travelers Rest and Arlene Davis of Sylva, N.C.; a brother, Norwood Davis of Sumter; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenville Memorial Gardens. BISHOPVILLE — Anderson “Andy” or “Bread” Isaac, 50, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at his home, 224 Cousar St. Born March 6, 1950, in Lee County, he was the eldest son of Louise S. Isaac and the late Fuller Isaac. Mr. Isaac graduated from Dennis High School in 1968 and attended Allen University in Columbia. He was a lifelong member of St. John AME Church, where he was a member of the adult choir and president of the men’s club. He was employed by BBA Non-Woven Co. of Bethune for 28 years. In 1989, he married Jeannette Wright Isaac. He was a parent volunteer for the Bishopville Little League Softball Team. Survivors besides his wife of Bishopville and his mother of Bishopville include a son, Anderson Jeremy Isaac of Bishopville; two brothers, Shepherd Isaac and his wife, Peggy, of Atlanta, Ga., and Curtis Isaac and his wife, Peggy, of Darlington; five sisters, Bobbie Bradley and her husband, Ray, and Angela Isaac, all of Bishopville, Betty Ann Rutledge and her husband, James, of Bloomville, N.J., Audrea Anderson and husband, Isaac, of Ft. Myer, Fla., and Sarah Dawson and husband, Ralph, of Charleston; four aunts, Willie Mae McIntosh of New York, Sarah Bradford of New Jersey, Jessie Belle Isaac of Bishopville, and Jauncie Dotson and her husband, Charles, of Philadelphia; two uncles, Fair Isaac and his wife, Mozelle, and Ernest Scarborough and his wife, Estelle, all of Bishopville; eight nephews and five nieces. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John AME Church with the Rev. Moses Hamlin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Howard Malcolm Jennings Sr., 86, widower of May “Maizie” Crawford Jennings, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in Richmond, Va. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late George Douglas Jennings and Anna Lydia Lee Jennings. Survivors include a son, Howard M. Jennings Jr. of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Lydia J. Strickland of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Esther J. Hammond of Florence; two grandchildren, Howard M. Jennings III and Conway M. Jennings, both of Richmond; two step-grandchildren, William J. Strickland Jr. of Richmond and Sarah St. Jean of Baltimore, Md. He was the nephew of Maj. W. Loring Lee and Hallie Fishburne Lee. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating. RAYMOND McFADDEN

PEMBROKE, N.J. — Retired Master Sgt. Raymond “Randy” McFadden, 50, husband of Rosalind Perry McFadden, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home after an illness. Born Nov. 17, 1950, in Alcolu, S.C., he was a son of the late Roosevelt McFadden Sr. and Hester Brown McFadden. He attended the public schools in South Carolina. In his youth, he joined Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he was active in the Sunday school. He joined the U.S. military in November 1969 and retired on April 30, 1990. After basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., he attended Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., after which he was sent to Vietnam, where he served during the Vietnam War. During his career, he held many leadership positions with tours of duty in Vietnam, 3rd Ard-Div. Germany, 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, N.C., 91st Division California, Fort Benning, Ga., Grenada and Fort Dix, N.J. He received the following decorations: Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, Army Commendation Medal 2nd OLC, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, three National Defense Service Medals, Vietnam Service Medal with two service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal 1st OLC, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, Bronze Star Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Overseas Service Bar-2, Master Parachutist Badge, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge and Sharp Shooter Marksmanship Badge Rifle, M-16. He was also a member of VFW Post 10065 in Pemberton, N.J. After retiring, he worked at Rickles Floor Covering as a manager. He was also employed by Princeton Armor. Later, he became an ROTC instructor in the Junior Leadership Cadet Corp at Camden Middle School. He also assisted the ROTC program at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden and Camden High School, all in New Jersey. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Petty Officer 1st Class Curtis Perry of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, LaTonya McFadden of Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita, Texas, and Lois Hester McFadden of the home; three brothers, Roosevelt McFadden Jr. of Sumter, S.C., George McFadden of Clinton Corner, N.Y., and Robert McFadden of Augusta, Ga.; three sisters, Helen McFadden of Alcolu, Annie Lee of Hillcrest, N.Y., and Mary Hilton of Sumter; three grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at noon on Friday, Feb. 9, at Main Post Chapel at Fort Dix, N.J., with Chaplain Lt. Col. Marvin L. Mills officiating, assisted by Chaplain Maj. COLUMBIA — Bernard Hastie, 45, died today, Feb. 15, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 2, 1955, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of Wilson Hastie and the late Daisy Bell Knox Hastie and the stepson of Willie Mae Horn Hastie. The family will receive friends at the home, 973 N. GABLE — Anthony D. Singleton, husband of Annie Mae McFadden Singleton, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at 1325 Boise Lewis Road.
Born May 25, 1932, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Allen and Rosa Singleton.

FLORENCE — James “J.M.” Gainey, 64, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System after a short battle with cancer. Born Dec. 12, 1936, in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Raymond Thomas Marsh and Corine Gainey Marsh. Survivors include two sons, Alfred “Al” Gainey of Starr and Terry Gainey of Gray Court; a daughter, Debra Miller of Gray Court; two brothers, Gene Marsh of Florence and Marion Marsh of Hartsville; a sister, Hazel Dennis Tobar of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and a special companion, Nadeen Morris and her children of the home. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Lee and Heyward Thomas Marsh, both of Hartsville. ROBERT L. HUDSON JR.

Robert L. “Bubba” Hudson Jr. died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at 1285 Oswego Road. Born Jan. 29, 1962, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Robert L. Hudson Sr. and Anna Melton Hudson. Mr. Hudson attended Lee County public schools and graduated from Ashwood Central High School in 1980. He was employed for many years as a brick mason along with his father and also as an independent contractor for many years. He was also employed by the City of Sumter for eight years. He accepted Jesus as his personal savior. In his youth, he was a member of Unionville AME Church. Survivors include four daughters, Rebecca Isaac, Sonya Hudson, Latoya Hudson and Latasha Hudson, all of Sumter; a brother, Sampson Hudson of Sumter; six sisters, Helen Andrews of Cayce, Pamela D. Hudson of Atlanta, Ga., and Barbara Davis, Patricia A. Hudson, Coral L. Hudson and Erica Hudson, all of Sumter; his stepmother, Francis Hudson; two stepbrothers; two stepsisters; and a special friend, Rebecca Randolph of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Holiness Church, 129½ W. Moore St., with Pastor Shirley Holliday officiating, assisted by Minister Barrington Pierson, Minister Viola Linton, Evangelist Rosa McDuffie, Pastor Davis Ocran and Bishop Joseph Brunson. SUMMERTON — Mary “Doolie” Richardson Lawson, 87, widow of Bertie “Rev. Larue” Lawson, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Aug. 10, 1913, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Sarah Fludd Richardson. Mrs. Lawson attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she accepted Christ and joined Historic Liberty Hill AME Church. Survivors include two sons, Joseph Lawson of Deerfield, Fla., and Tyrone Lawson of Summerton; a daughter, Bertha Johnson of Summerton; two adopted children, Sarah Sumpter of New York, N.Y., and Bernice Richardson of Summerton; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.T. Johnson, the Rev. H.W. Mitchell and the Rev. Warren E. Hatcher. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday. Mabel Jerauld Mitchell, 90, widow of Maurice R. Mitchell, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Chatham, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Silas Robins and Mary Cumming Jerauld. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, a retired licensed practical nurse at Connecticut State Hospital and a volunteer for the Senior Center of Sumter. Survivors include a son, Malcolm Gary Mitchell and his wife, Sharon, of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Marguerite DeAvellar and Phyllis Rollins, both of Harwich, Mass.; and a grandson, Kyle David Mitchell. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth D. Thomas officiating. Memorials may be sent to Santee Senior Services, 120 E. PINEWOOD — Judge Reuben B. Clark, husband of Edythe Gibson Clark, died Thursday evening, Feb. 15, 2001, at his home.
He was born Feb. 6, 1919, in Clarendon County.

DALZELL — Anna D. Blanding of 2726 Moss Creek Drive, widow of Isaac Rudolph Blanding, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at her home. Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Hazel Dinkins and Clarreather Dinkins Curtis and the stepdaughter of the late Deacon S. Jackson Curtis. Mrs. Blanding joined High Hills Baptist Church in her youth and served faithfully until she moved to Bridgeport, Conn., where she joined First Baptist Church in Stratford, Conn. In 1991, she moved back to Sumter and renewed her membership at High Hills Baptist Church, where she served in the senior choir, missionary society and Sunday school. She received a bachelor’s degree from Morris College and a master’s degree from the University of Bridgeport. She was also a licensed real estate agent. She was a member of the National Teachers Association and the American Legion Post. Survivors include a son, Christopher Leon Blanding of Sumter; a daughter, Bonita Alston of Silver Springs, Md.; two brothers, the Rev. Richard Dinkins and Albert Davis, both of Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Epsie Curtis of Brooklyn, N.Y., Susie B. Miller of Seaside, Calif., Rebecca Holland of Sumter, Julia A. Wells of Cheverly, Md., and Minnie Donaldson of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at High Hills Baptist Church in Dalzell with the Rev. Ellie Palmer, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roosevelt Williams, the Rev. C. MANNING — Solomon “Pat” Cantey, husband of Odessa T. Cantey, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Intermedical Hospital in Columbia. Born April 29, 1934, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Robert Cantey and Bertha Thompson Cantey. Mr. Cantey attended Clarendon County public schools and Mt. Zero Baptist Church. He worked in the logging industry for several years before his retirement. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include five sons, Benjamin Cantey of New York, N.Y., Solomon Cantey Jr. of Columbia, Melvin Cantey of Manning, the Rev. Lawrence Cantey of Alcolu and Ervin Cantey of Summerton; two daughters, Evangelist Ollie Gibson and Ella Mae Heyward, both of Manning; three brothers, Robert Cantey of Alcolu, Melvin Cantey of Latta and Willie Lee Cantey of Pinewood; four sisters, Lenora Abraham of Manning, Josephine Brown of Miami, Fla., and Rose Ann Cantey and Louise Cantey, both of Sumter; and 28 grandchildren. WEST COLUMBIA — Melvin Dukes died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at 1224 Starview Drive. Born Sept. 5, 1957, in Sumter, he was a son of Moses Dukes Sr. and the late Laura Gilliard Dukes. Mr. Dukes professed Christ and attended State Full Gospel Church in Gaston. He also participated at the Lexington Adult Learning Center in West Columbia. Survivors besides his father of Sumter include four brothers, Moses Dukes Jr., Bnrnie Dukes and Edward Dukes, all of Sumter, and Albert Dukes of Elizabeth, N.Y.; and five sisters, Ella Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Naomi Sterling and Laura Dominique, both of Spring Valley, N.Y., Maxine Addison of West Columbia and Beverly Dukes of Dalzell. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday in the chapel of Job’s Mortuary in Sumter. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. PINEWOOD — Estelle C. DuRant, widow of Algie M. DuRant, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Jan. 15, 1926, in Richmond, Va., she was a daughter of the late Eugene and Addie Colbert. Mrs. DuRant attended the public schools in Washington, D.C. She was employed in Washington, D.C., in the health care and public school system. She became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1993 and served faithfully until her death. Survivors include three sons, Chester Anderson, Wade Anderson and Victor DuRant, all of Pinewood; four daughters, Yvonne McRae of Capitol Heights, Md., Marilyn Dorsey of Arlington, Va., Ivy Dodson of Lanham, Md. and Cindy Fletcher of Pinewood; a brother, Eugene Colbert of Brandywine, Md.; a sister, Lorraine Jones of Lanham, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, U.S. 15, Paxville, with Brother Charles L. McCray officiating, assisted by Brother James Simmons. Burial will be in Clark-Gibson Cemetery in Paxville. The family will receive friends at the home, Route 2, Box 556, Mahoney Road, in the Paxville community of Pinewood. CAROLYN JOHNSON

BALTIMORE, Md. — Carolyn Johnson, 63, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Harbor Hospital Center in Baltimore. Born Sept. 15, 1937, in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Richard and Camilla Thomas Junious. She attended the public schools in Clarendon and Sumter counties in South Carolina. In her youth, she accepted Christ and joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She lived in both Summerton, S.C., and Maryland. Survivors include two daughters, Janet Junius of Summerton and Terry Hayes of Clinton, Md.; a sister, Lillian Jefferson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Johnson. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. J.H. Pringle, Bobby McDonald, Warren E. Hatcher, Sam H. Miller and Amos Hatcher. Burial will be in Shiloh-St.Matthews Cemetery in Davis Station, S.C. The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday. ANTHONY B. SINGLETON SR.

GABLE — Anthony B. Singleton Sr., husband of Annie Mae McFadden Singleton, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at his home. Born May 25, 1930, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Allen and Rosa Singleton. Mr. Singleton was a faithful member of Congruity Presbyterian Church, USA, where he served on the trustee board and usher board. He was a member of Lodge No. 44. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Anthony Singleton Jr. and John Singleton, both of Sumter; three daughters, Veronica Jenkins and Dorothy Jackson, both of Sumter, and Rena DeVeaux of Columbia; two brothers, Allen Eugene Singleton and Willie Singleton, both of Sumter; two sisters, Alberta Green of Sumter and Evelena McFadden of Baltimore, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Singleton; and a brother, Walter Singleton. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Congruity Presbyterian Church, USA, with the Rev. William Jones, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 9 a.m. Saturday. MARIAN TISDALE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Marian Tisdale died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Greater South East Community Hospital. Born Aug. 21, 1957, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of Mary Grant Tisdale and the late Thomas Sargent. She was reared in a loving, Christian home. She received a degree in computer programming; and during her career, she worked for several corporations in Tampa, Fla., and Dunwoody, Ga. She devoted much of her time to community service. Survivors besides her mother and stepfather, Warren Tisdale, include two brothers, Valdez Tisdale and Dwayne Tisdale, both of Maryland; and three sisters, Audrey Tisdale of Baltimore, Md., Elisa James of Maplewood, N.J., and Aundrea Noel June of Union, N.J. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Baptist Church in Dalzell, S.C., with the Rev. Dr. L.W. Walker Sr., officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the home of her uncle, Lewis Davis, 632 Floride St., Sumter, S.C. ALBERT WRIGHT JR.

Albert “Tacky” Wright Jr. died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 19, 1935, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Albert Wright Sr. and Marie Canty Wright. Mr. Wright attended Sumter County public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. He played baseball for the Sumter White Sox. In his youth, he joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Perry Wright and Tyrone Wright; three brothers, James Wright of Lake City, Leon Wright of Sumter and Raymond Wright of Newark, N.J.; and four sisters, Mariam Session of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dorothy Bryant of Chicago, Ill., Flossie Littles of Sumter and Deloris Brooks of Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Williams Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Bracey, Ashby Davis, James Dudley, James Holland, James McCray, Herman Pearson and James Watson. Flower bearers will be nieces. The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home of his sister, Flossie Littles, 56 James Village Apartments. DEACON ELIJAH GAILLARD

Deacon Elijah Gaillard, 71, husband of Betty D. Gaillard, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Robert Johnson University Hospital in Brunswick, N.J. Born July 20, 1930, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Eddie and Carrie Manigault Gaillard. He began his walk with God at an early age at St. Mark Four Bridge Baptist Church. He started working in the church as a Sunday school teacher and then the Sunday school superintendent. He served on the trustee board and the deacon board where he later became chairman. He was a member of the St. Paul Lodge 8 in Sumter, a member of the C.C. Johnson Consistory and Cairo Temple 125 in Columbia, S.C. A businessman in the community for many years, he was the owner-operator of EFG Trucking Company until his retirement several years ago. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, the Rev. Francis E. Gaillard of Newark, N.J.; two daughters, Ruby Gaillard Jones of Sumter and Betty A. Minnigan of Oxford, N.J.; 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. St. Paul Lodge 8 will hold its ceremony at 7 p.m. tonight. C.C. Johnson Consistory and Cairo Temple held their ceremony Friday night. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark Four Bridges Baptist Church with the Rev. Samie D. Simmons, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Francis E. Gaillard, pastor of Smyrna Baptist Church in Newark, N.J., delivering the eulogy and the Rev. Robert R. Hooper, Minister James Manigault and Minister Carrie M. Tillman assisting. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be from St. Paul Lodge 8. Floral bearers will be from St. Marks Four Bridges Church Missionary Society. The family will receive friends at the home, 1016 Porter St., Sumter. Scriven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIE P. WALTERS

Willie P. Walters, 51, the husband of Loretta Amos Walters, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 28, 1950, he was a son of Willie McBride and the late Elease Pearson Walters. He professed Christ at an early age and joined Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher Board for 11 years and was chairman of the Trustee Board until his death. He was the owner of Walter’s Landscaping and Septic Tanks and Walters Brothers Residential Care Facility. Survivors besides his wife of the home include his father, Willie McBride of Sumter; three daughters, Sabrina F. Walters and Tracey L. Williams, both of Sumter, and Teresa Kennedy of New York; two brothers, Johnnie Lee Walters and Willie N. McBride, both of Sumter; two sisters, Annie Lou Gist and Rosa Lee Davis both of Sumter; three grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. M.G. Walters, Demetrius Amos and Nathan Amos. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends at the residence, 2225 Nettles Road, Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES ROBERT CURRY

Retired Master Sgt. James Robert “Bob” Curry, 65, the husband of Shirley Curry, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at his residence. Born in Louisville, Ky., he was a son of the late Lee Albert and Jessie Mae Pate Curry. He retired as master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and later retired as an insurance agent from Allstate. He was a member of the Jamil Temple Shriners, the Masons and the VFW. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, Robert Curry of Sumter; four daughters, Tracy Curry Marye and Donna Yvonne Curry, both of Sumter, Lisa Curry Webb of Laurel, Md., and Debbie Curry Simms of Lexington, Ky; two brothers, Paul Curry of Jefferson, Ind. and Richard Curry of Wheeler, Texas; two sisters, Martha Mattling and Minnie Mattingly of Louisville Ky; three grandchildren, Donald Lowell Atkinson, James Tanner Curry and Lyndsey Ann Webb. He was preceded in death by a son, James R. Curry Jr., four brothers and three sisters. Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. THEODORE R. PLEASANT

Theodore R. Pleasant, 92, husband of Elizabeth McLaurin Pleasant, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 11, 1909, in Pinewood, S.C., he was a son of the late Paul Cole and Susan Johnson Pleasant. He was a member of Mt. Olive Church in Pinewood at an early age. Later in life, he joined the Antioch A.M.E. Church, where he served as a member of the steward board 1, trustee board 1 and Sunday school. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Reginald and Michael McLaurin, both of New York City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Antioch A.M.E. Church in Rimini with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, officiating assisted by Presiding Elder B.P. Boston. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery, Pinewood. Pallbearers will be members of the trustee board of Antioch A.M.E. and friends. Floral bearers will be members of the Missionary Society of Antioch A.M.E. and friends. WILLIAM J. OSTEEN

William J. “Joe” Osteen, 79, husband of Hattie Ella Compton Osteen, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Francis Alva Osteen and the late Ruby Smith Osteen. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and retired from the S.C. Forestry Commission as a fire warden with 33 years of service. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a daughter, Shirley O. Geddings and her husband Myer Jr. of Sumter; a brother, Richard Melvin Osteen of Baltimore, Md; a sister, Virginia T. Hylton of Lexington, S.C.; two grandsons, William Myer Geddings and Joseph Benjamin Geddings, both of Sumter and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times at the home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

PAUL LEO WILKINSON

Paul Leo Wilkinson, 70, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Rose Bud First Baptist Church, Rose Bud, Ark.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Masonic Cemetery in Tipton, Mo.

BERNARD HASTIE

COLUMBIA — Bernard Hastie, 45, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 2, 1955, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of Wilson Hastie Sr. and the late Daisy Bell Knox Hastie and the stepson of Willie Mae Horne Hastie. He was a graduate of Westing House High Vocational Tech, Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a dental technician and a member of the National Guard in New York. After moving to Sumter, he became employed by Carolina Furniture Works. Survivors besides his father and stepmother include a brother, Wilson Hastie Jr. of Sumter; a sister, Pamela Taylor of Sumter; two stepbrothers, William Horne of Elizabethtown, N.C., and Michael Horne of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a niece, Tia Troy of Dunn, N.C., and a nephew, Devin Taylor of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie A. Wright officiating, assisted by the Revs. Melvin Coleman, M.G. Walters and John Johnson. Burial will be in Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:35 p.m. from the home, 2920 Tindal Road, Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home, 973 N. St. Paul Church Road and 2920 Tindal Road. In lieu of flowers, make donations to the Alexander Hastie Education Fund. Sumter Funeral Services Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
