Albert “Tacky” Wright Jr., 66, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 19, 1935, he was a son of the late Albert Wright Sr. and Marie Canty Wright. He attended the schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Lincoln High School. He played baseball for the Sumter White Sox. At an early age he joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Perry Wright and Tyrone Wright; three brothers, James Wright of Lake City, Leon Wright of Sumter and Raymond Wright of Newark, N.J.; four sisters, Miriam Session of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dorothy Bryant of Chicago Ill., Flossie Littles of Sumter and Deloris Brooks of Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Williams Sr. officiating assisted by the Rev. Kay Adams Best. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Bracey, Ashby Davis, James Dudley, James Holland, James McCray, Herman Pearson and James Watson. Floral bearers will be nieces. The funeral procession will leave 2:15 p.m. from the home of his sister Flossie Littles, 56 James Village Apartments, Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister. Oline Webb Sumpter, 77, widow of Charlie Sumpter, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at her residence. Born Aug. 1, 1924, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Webb and Evalena Frances Webb. Survivors include a son, Robert Sumpter. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, 337 Mooneyham Road, Sumter. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

SUMMERVILLE — Mary Hemphill Boyle, 74, widow of William Augustus Boyle Jr., died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at her residence. Born July 6, 1926, in Charleston, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Hardee Hemphill and Mary Osborn Barnwell Hemphill. She was a graduate of Summerville High School and attended the College of Charleston. She was also a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the American Contract Bridge League. Survivors include three daughters, Sissue (Dan), Beauchene, Dodie (John) Altman and Jane (George) Brown, all of Summerville; two sons, William A. Boyle (Gus) of Sumter and Robert H. Boyle (Bob) of Kingsport, Tenn; a brother, Robert Hardee Hemphill III of Summerville; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Parks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SUMMERTON — Allen Lee Oliver, 65, died Monday morning, Feb. 19, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning after an illness. Born July 31, 1935, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Louis Oliver and Lillie Jones Oliver. He was reared by his foster parents, the late James Scott and Lillie Ragin Scott. Born April 14, 1915, in the Greeleyville community of Williamsburg County, S.C., he was a son of the late Joe Williams Sr. and Cora McDonald Williams. He was first married to the late Mary Ned Williams, then to the late Helen Singletary Williams, and then to the late Etta Mae Wright Williams. BISHOPVILLE — Teresa “Resey” Keziah Davis, 44, wife of Olin Davis Jr., died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001. Born in Chester County, she was a daughter of Edwin Keziah and Veronica Morton Keziah. Survivors besides her husband and her parents of Bishopville include a daughter, Jody L. Atkinson; a brother, Don L. Brown; two sisters, Katura Skinner McLeod of Bishopville and Karen Keziah Mellor; and five nephews and seven nieces. RIMINI — Curtis “Curt Mickey” Webber, 73, husband of Mary Ballard Webber, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born May 19, 1927, in Eastover in Richland County, he was a son of the late Edisto DeVeaux and Beatrice “Jimmie Bea” Webber Patten. Mr. Webber attended Richland County public schools. He was a retired truck driver. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Dallas C. Webber of Pinewood; four daughters, Shirley M. Bell, Dorothy R. Brown and Mary A. Joseph, all of Bronx, N.Y., and Kanzora N. Robinson of Pinewood; eight brothers, Eugene of Brooklyn, N.Y., Daniel and Carl, both of Bronx, Herman and Enoch, both of Eastover, Alton of Columbia, Willie J. of Sally and Joshua of Stamford, Conn.; two sisters, Ola Mae and Barbara, both of Bronx, and Bernice of Queens, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Antioch UME Church, Route 2, Rimini, with the Rev. MAYESVILLE — Courtney Loyita Wilson died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at her home. Born April 26, 1981, in Lee County, she was a daughter of William P. Wilson Jr. and Annie Durant Wilson. Miss Wilson attended the public schools in Kaneohe, Hawaii, and in Lee County, and she graduated from high school in 1999. She also attended the University of South Carolina Sumter Sumter and was currently enrolled at Central Carolina Technical College. She attended Mt. Pleasant AME Church and the Marine Corps Base Chapel in Kaneohe. She joined Unionville AME Church, where she accepted the Lord as her Savior. She was involved with the Genesis Chapel, youth Bible Study, Junior choir, Sunday school and taught vacation Bible school. Survivors besides her parents include a daughter, Annissa Hokuao-O-Nalani Wilson; two sisters, Lashia K. Wilson of the home and Yeta Wilson of Virginia; and her grandparents, Gertrude Wilson and Freddie Mae Durant. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Unionville AME Church in St. Charles with the Rev. Joshua Dupree officiating, assisted by Dr. Clyde Anderson of New York, N.Y., the Rev. Matthew D. Gallashaw, husband of Victoria Brown Gallashaw, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 9, 1921, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Matthew D. Gallashaw and Rosa Brown Gallashaw. Mr. Gallashaw attended Ebenezer High School in Dalzell, Lincoln High School in Sumter and Brenard Junior College in Cheraw. Mr. Gallashaw was a farmer, employed at Electrical Wholesalers and retired from Exide Battery. He also was employed with Wells Fargo as a security guard. In his youth, he became a Christian and joined Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA) in Dalzell, where he served as a trustee, deacon and sang in the choir. He also organized and managed the Singing Cousins. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, the Rev. Matthew D. Gallashaw of Philadelphia, Pa., and Olanda Lee Gallashaw of Dalzell; a daughter, Mattie Mack of Dalzell; a sister, Ella Canty of Sumter; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Emmett A. Gallashaw; and three sisters, Angeline Davis, Ethel Pearson and Estel Porcher. EFFINGHAM — Viola Rosa Catherine Brand, 84, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Honorage Nursing Center in Florence. Born April 3, 1916, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ben Tilmon and Fannie Brand. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she became a member of Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville, where she was a faithful member of the gospel choir. Survivors include a son, Joenell Brand of Uniontown, Pa.; three daughters, Francena Brand of Turbeville and Emma Graham and Jannie T. Dickson, both of Effingham;; a brother, John Brand of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Brand of Olanta and Merletha Gamble of Laurelton, N.Y.; and 23 grandchildren. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, 114 N. Church St., Lake City. Harold Chandler died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 22, 1951, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Paul Chandler and Bertha Herrington Chandler. Mr. Chandler attended Sumter County public schools. He was employed for 23 years at Exide Battery, now known as EnerSys Inc. Survivors include a brother, James Chandler of Sumter; six sisters, Janie Brown of Fanwood, N.J., Mary Hadley of Seat Pleasant, Md., Barbara Allen of Philadelphia, Pa., and Betty Colclough, Berthinia Davis and Alice Nixon, all of Sumter; and two aunts and an uncle. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Chandler Jr. and Payton Chandler. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Raymond Watson Hill, 66, widower of Brenda Louise Thigpen Hill, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Randall G. Hill and Juanita Mixon Hill. Mr. Hill was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and was a retired supervisor from Santee Print Works. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include a son, Mickey Lynn Hill of California; a daughter, Melissa Barkley of Sumter; a brother, Randall G. Hill Jr. of Sumter; a sister, Judy Sell of Florence; and a grandchild. Harvis “Bro” McGee, husband of Margaret B. McGee, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 8, 1939, in Bessemer, Ala., he was a son of the late Horace and Carrie Beulah McGee. Mr. McGee attended Junior High 81 School in New York. He was a former member of Soundview Baptist Church in New York. After moving to Sumter in 1971, he joined Mt. Pisgah AME Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed by Yuasa-Exide. Survivors besides his wife of the home include four sons, Michael McGee, Harvis McGee Jr. and Ulysses Kevin McGee, all of Sumter, and Kiplin Eric Evans McGee of New York, N.Y.; six daughters, Janette McGee Johnson of the home, Denise McGee Nelson of Bishopville, Lillian McGee Hastie, Sharon McGee and Margaret Ann “Candi” McGee, all of Sumter, and Pamela McGee of Rocky Point, N.C.; three brothers, Willie Rankin of Birmingham, Ala., Sylvester McGee of Birmingham, Ala., and Emerson McGee of Bronx, N.Y.; seven sisters, Martha Patterson of Birmingham, Rose McGee, Lula Sanders, Inez McMillian, Joann Johnson and Virginia Williams, all of Bronx, and Katherine Harrison of Long Island, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Polly. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Ammie E. Mims, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at National Healthcare System. Born in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Alvin Mims and Corrine Wells Mims. Ms. Mims was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was retired from the Franklin Co., Ohio Highway Department. She was a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include a niece, Anne M. Moye of Sumter; a nephew, Norman W. Mims Jr. of Kingsland, Ga.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. Burial was in Sumter Cemetery. BRONX, N.Y. — Louise Riley, 65, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at her home in Bronx, N.Y. Born Oct. 16, 1935, in Summerton, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Jamiel Green Riley. She was employed as a nurse for the Bronx State Hospital in Bronx, where she retired. Survivors include five aunts, Lula Watson of Long Island, N.Y., Hazel Carter and Ruby Richburg, both of Baltimore, Md., and Francis Lewis and Camilla Witherspoon, both of Opa-Locka, Fla.; and other relatives. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. MAGGIE L. SCARBOROUGH

Maggie Lou Scarborough, widow of Jessie Scarborough, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 30, 1911, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Matthew Butler and Elizann Washington Butler. Mrs. Scarborough attended Lee County public schools. She was employed by the Rev. T.J. Slater Sr. and Thelma Slater, where she was a faithful caretaker for many years. She was instrumental in raising many children in the Woodrow community and was known as “Aunt Maggie” to everyone who knew her, except her grandchildren, who called her “Nana.” In her youth she joined Mt. Olive AME Church, where she was a class leader, member of the senior choir, member of the missionary society and Woodrow Missionary Unit, the usher board, church school, and senior citizens. Survivors include a daughter, Ollie Mae Pearson of the home; a granddaughter, Bessie Rhee Mitchell of Washington, D.C.; a great-granddaughter, Sheila Wilson of Woodrow; two great-great-grandsons, Nathaniel Pearson of Sumter and Laquan Wilson of Woodrow; a special niece, Allean Jennings of Woodrow; and additional nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Joseph Butler, William “Spunk” Butler, Marion Butler, Ivory Butler, Edward Butler and Emanuel Butler; a sister, Sarah Dozier Butler; a granddaughter, Flossie Lou Mack; and a great-great-granddaughter, Tiffany Wilson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson and the Rev. T.J. Slater Sr. Burial will be in Cooksfield Cemetery in Woodrow. Nephews will be pallbearers, and stewards of the church will be honorary pallbearers. Nieces will be flower bearers, and members of the church missionary society will be honorary flower bearers. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of her daughter, 2761 Rembert Church Road, Dalzell. The family will receive friends at the same address. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
