WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Eva Mae Peterson Alston, wife of Marion Alston, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000. Born in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Willie Peterson and Ella Guinyard Peterson. Scientist, civil rights activist, humanitarian

Benjamin Franklin Scott Jr., husband of Bessie Joyce Sampson Scott, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 19, 1922, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Scott Sr. and Birdie Thomas Scott. Mr. Scott graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1942 and received a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1944. He was one of four black scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project, the top-secret military group that developed the first atomic bomb. Mr. Scott continued his work in nuclear chemistry in the private sector in Chicago for 17 years and Boston for eight years. He also received numerous awards in his field, produced several national and international patents and presented scientific papers in the United States and abroad. Following his scientific career, Mr. Scott became executive director of United Mortgage Bankers of America, the trade association of black mortgage bankers in the United States. He returned to Sumter in 1979, finishing his professional career as a adult education teacher at the University of South Carolina. He also taught briefly at Sumter High School and Hillcrest Middle School in 1985. He was active in the community as the president of the Chicago Morehouse Alumni Club. In Boston, Mr. Scott was president of the Black Affairs Council of the Unitarian Universalist Church. In 1969, “The Coming of The Black Man,” his first book of social commentary, was published by Beacon Press of Boston. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Christopher Jehu Scott of Whippany, N.J.; a daughter, Barbara Joyce Scott Burton-Edwards of South Plainfield, N.J.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Two sisters, Birdie Lucille Rolfe and Claretta Jeanette Sampson, both preceded Mr. Scott in death. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., with the Rev. James Blassingame officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie A. Wright. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 3000 Abel Road. JIM JENNINGS

ABILENE, Texas — Jim Jennings, husband of Hazel Herron Jennings, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Covenant Place. Born Feb. 21, 1907, in Ennis, Texas, he was a son of the late William Kindel Jennings and Carrie Christian Jennings. Mr. Jennings was a 1926 graduate of Abilene High School. He received a bachelor’s degree with a major in mathematics and minor in English from Hardin-Simmons University in 1930. As a student, Mr. Jennings earned four letters in football, was president of his sophomore class in 1928 and the Engineers Club, served as business manager of the “Corral” and was active in the Players Club. After his marriage, Mr. Jennings and his wife were active in the University Baptist Church, where he was ordained a deacon in 1944. He became a partner in Sun Electric Co., which was originally founded by his father. Mr. Jennings was secretary/treasurer, president and chairman of the board. He retired in 1995 and sold the business in 1999. Mr. Jennings was a member of Abilene’s First Baptist Church and served as chairman of the board of deacons, president of the brotherhood, chairman of the Howard Butt Citywide Crusade for Christ, Junior Boys Sunday School teacher and was active in numerous church committees. At the time of his death, he was a deacon emeritus, having served as a deacon for more than 50 years. Among his many civic and community affiliations, Mr. Jennings had been a director of the Abilene YMCA and was named Kiwanian of the Year in 1969. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and served in the National Guard. Survivors besides his wife of Abilene include two daughters, Margaret Belew of Sumter, S.C., Dorothy Urlaub of Santa Teresa; a sister, Genelle Jennings of Abilene; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Walter Jennings, W.K. Jennings Jr. and Leroy C. Jennings Sr. preceded Mr. Jennings in death. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Phil Christopher and the Rev. David Leyerle officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park. TURBEVILLE — Sarah Ellon DuBose, 82, wife of Joseph E. DuBose, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at a Sumter nursing facility after an illness. Born in Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Augustus Walker and Lonnie Beatrice Key Walker. Mrs. DuBose was a homemaker. Survivors besides her husband of Turbeville include two sisters, Ida Randall of Belleair, Fla., and Carolyn Suggs of Clewiston, Fla. LAKE CITY — Eugenia McCutcheon Green, 87, widow of Jack Green Sr., died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000. Born in Lake City, she was a daughter of the late Dinah and Matthew McCutcheon. Mrs. Green was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served in the Sunday school and other capacities. She was also a member of Willing Workers OES Chapter No. 319. Survivors include three daughters, Mae Frances Brown of Lake City, Carolyn McMillan of Florence and Cynthia L. McGill of Hanahan; four sons, Jack L. Green Jr. and James L. Green, both of Florence, Charles R. Green of Philadelphia and Thomas Bernard Green of the home; a sister, Evangeline McClam of Lake City; a brother, Edward McCutcheon of Lake City; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church on Deep River Street with the Rev. T.J. Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery. Jeanne Delia Sylvia, 62, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Tiverton, R.I., she was a daughter of the late Frank Sylvia and Delia Lebreaux Sylvia. Ms. Sylvia was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church. Survivors include a son, Steven Boscoe of Dartmouth, Mass.; two daughters, Cathy Boscoe of Swansea, Mass., and Kerri Boscoe of Myrtle Beach; three sisters, Elaine Jean of Swansea, Mass., Renee Crosley of Manchester, Conn., and Deanna Stevens of Fall River, Mass.; and seven grandchildren. BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Vermel Wells Levine Capers, widow of Wilbur Capers, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Downstate University Hospital. Born Feb. 28, 1922, in Sumter, S.C., she was daughter of the late Charles Wells and Susan Swinton Wells. In her youth, Mrs. Capers attended St. Paul AME Church. She attended the public schools of Sumter County and Lincoln High School. Mrs. Capers lived in the New York area for many years before returning to Sumter in 1963. She eventually returned to the Brooklyn area of New York, where she was employed by Cascade Laundry. While there, she became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Mrs. Capers returned to Sumter in 1994 and joined Mulberry Baptist Church. Due to declining health, she returned to New York in 1997 and became a watch care member of Pentecostal Church of God in Christ. Mrs. Capers was first married to John Levine and then to the late Wilbur Capers. Survivors besides her first husband of Sumter include a son, Charles Levine of Oakland, Calif.; a daughter, Willie Mae Habersham of Brooklyn; a godson, Leon Kennedy of Brooklyn; two god-daughters, Gwendolyn Taylor of San Diego, Calif., and Karen Johnson of Brooklyn; 22 grandchildren, including Crystal Levin and four others she raised, Trent Levine, Senora Levine, Frances Levine and Bryant Levine; 37 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A son, Freddie Levine, and a brother, Henry Wells, both preceded Mrs. Capers in death. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. KENNETH N. McCUTCHEON

LAKE CITY — Kenneth N. McCutcheon, 89, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000. Born in Lake City, he was a son of the late Dinah McCutcheon. Mr. McCutcheon was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men. He retired from Carter Manufacturing Co. after 65 years. Mr. McCutcheon was first married to the late Geneva James McCutcheon and then to the late Emma Player McCutcheon. Survivors include a son, LaVance McCutcheon of Quinby; four daughters, Evelyn O. McCutcheon of Decatur, Ga., Deland Henderson of Philadelphia, Dinah Widder of Florence and Lillie Daniels of the home; a stepdaughter, Leanna Syphertt of Reedsville; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. T.J. Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery. Geneva Anderson Rivers, wife of Clarence B. Rivers Sr., of South Ozone Park, N.Y., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000. Born July 19, 1934, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Alma V. Anderson and the late George W. Anderson Sr. Mrs. Rivers was a member of Enon Missionary Baptist Church in her youth. After moving to New York, she was a prayer warrior with TBN Ministries. Mrs. Rivers retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manhattan, N.Y., after 30 years of service. Survivors besides her mother of Augusta, Ga., and husband of South Ozone Park include four sons, Arnold A. Jackson and Calvin L. Jackson, both of Sumter, and Michael A. Jackson and Clarence Rivers Jr., both of New York; and one brother, Harry L. Anderson of Augusta, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rivers was preceded in death by two brothers, George W. Anderson Jr. and Oradella A. Anderson. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. Beatrice “Bea” Whaley Roberson, wife of Kenneth Roberson Sr., died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 18, 1949, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Morris Whaley and Persena Gamble Whaley Stewart. Mrs. Roberson attended the public schools of Sumter County. In her youth, she joined Bethel Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Wedgefield. She later joined New Hope Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Sumter and became a founding member of the Church of The Gospel of Jesus Christ, where she served as a missionary and church mother. Survivors besides her father of Buffalo, N.Y., mother of Sumter and husband of St. Louis, Mo., include two sons, Kenneth Roberson Jr. and Carlos Roberson, both of Sumter; a daughter, Evencia Fox of Walterboro; two sisters, Caretha M. “Lois” Green and Mary M. Ingram, both of Sumter; and 10 grandchildren. Mrs. Roberson was preceded in death by a son, Malcolm “Freddie” Townsend. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with Pastor Ray Ingram officiating, assisted by Elder J.R. Rogers and Apostle Robert Wilson Jr. Burial will be in Bethel-New Hope Cemetery, Wedgefield. CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Christopher Williams died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000. Born June 3, 1961, in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of Mary Alice Spencer Williams and the late Felix Williams. In his youth, Mr. Williams moved to Washington, D.C., and attended Moten School. He also attended Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Md. Mr. Williams returned to South Carolina and lived with his grandmother before moving back to Maryland. In 1998, he moved to Pensacola, Fla., where he resided until his death. Survivors besides his mother of Forestville, Md., include three sons, Little Christopher Williams Jr., Davon Williams and Daryl Williams, all of Baltimore; two brothers, Felix Williams of Pensacola and Carl Williams of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Ruth Denise Williams of Columbia, Wendy Williams of Wedgefield, Theresia Akers of Dale City, Va., and Carlei Williams of Forestville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at High Hills AME Church with the Rev. M. Charmaine Ragin, pastor, officiating. DARLINGTON — James E. “Jimmy” Wilson, 66, husband of Joyce Gunter Wilson, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, after a brief illness. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Leslie Poe “Sam” Wilson and Mary Andrews Wilson. Mr. Wilson attended St. John’s High School. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Darlington and the Vance Hardin Sunday School Class. Mr. Wilson was a retired agent with Liberty Life Insurance and retired as a sergeant 1st class from the S.C. National Guard after 30 years. He was a Mason, Shriner and member of the American Legion, as well as an avid gardener and fisherman. Mr. Wilson worked with metal flower stands for funeral homes and flower shops as a hobby. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, James E. “Jim” Wilson of North Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Lisa W. Jordan Coleman and Ramble Lynn Wilson, both of Florence; a brother, John M. Wilson of Florence; two grandchildren, James Cyril “Jay” Jordan III of Darlington and Leslie Aaron Jordan of Evergreen; and a faithful friend, Chessie Vivians of Florence. William S. “Billy” Stranges, 25, of Trussville, Ala., died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in Jefferson County, Ala., as the result of a swimming accident. Born Feb. 8, 1975, in Columbus, Ohio, he was a son of William Stranges and Janis English LeRoux. Henry McNeil Stone, husband of Mary Louise Roberts Stone, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. Born Jan. 24, 1905, in Wrens, Ga., he was a son of the late William Gardner Stone and Carrie Farmer Stone. Funeral services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel.

SUMMERTON — Cora Johnson Dingle, widow of Connor Dingle Sr., died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. SANFORD, Fla. — Eloise B. Moretz, 84, of Blvd. DE LA Parisienne, Mary Esther, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000. Born Feb. 11, 1916, in Jensen Beach, she was a Lutheran and retired school teacher from the Seminole School District. Mrs. Moretz was also a member of the National Education Association. She moved to central Florida in 1956. Survivors include three sons, Marion E. Moretz of Mary Esther, Boyce A. Moretz of Vero and Aubrey F. Moretz of Westcliffe, Colo.; two brothers, Cleland Boyce and David Boyce, both of Sumter, S.C.; two sisters, Betty Weathersby of Sumter and Jessie Busslett of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. BISHOPVILLE — Ruth Dickinson Gentry, 88, wife of Russell B. Gentry, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center. Born Nov. 19, 1911, in St. Charles, she was the eldest daughter of the late John Henry Dickinson and the late Eloise Scarborough Dickinson. Mrs. Gentry was a member of Bishopville Presbyterian Church and the Cousar Circle. She was a 1934 graduate of Winthrop College and began her teaching career in 1934 at Cypress, S.C. She subsequently taught fifth grade in the Blenheim, Ashwood and Bishopville schools, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Lottie Green Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She married Russell B. Gentry on Dec. 22, 1937, who survives along with two sons, USMC Col. (Ret.) John R. Gentry of Central, S.C., Col. USA (MC) (Ret.) Richard H. Gentry of Cookeville, Tenn.; a brother, Dr. R.L. Dickinson of Bishopville; and two sisters, Eloise Stuckey of Summerville and Elizabeth Darby of West Union; one grandson, John Richard Gentry of Charleston, S.C. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Bishopville Presbyterian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. BISHOPVILLE — Rebecca Jennings Dudley, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center. She was a daughter of the late Fortune Jennings and Emma Jenkins Jennings. Mrs. Dudley was employed by Shaw Air Force Base and later by the Lee County Council on Aging. She was a member of Mt. Olive AME Church and a musician there during the 1950s and ‘60s. Mrs. Bradley attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons, Joe Bradley of Hempstead, N.Y., Willie Bradley of Sumter, James Clayton Bradley Sr. of Jamaica Queens, N.Y., and Harold Lee Bradley of Millington, Tenn.; two daughters, Richard Dean Bradley of Sumter and Ethel Lee Bradley Hanes of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Joe David Mack of Inman; 20 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. JAMES FARMER

James “Lit” Farmer, husband of Ruth Sanders Farmer, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Born Dec. 31, 1907, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Aaron Brown and Alice Farmer. Mr. Farmer confessed Christ as his savior and was baptized at the former Camascus Baptist Church. He later moved to Sumter County and became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two nephews he reared as his sons, Raymond Brunson of Sumter and Isaac Stukes of Washington, D.C.; two nieces, Mildred Glisson of Sumter and Ethel McKnight of Philadelphia, Pa.; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Farmer. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends at the home, 138 Shannon Ave. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM D. GLENN JR.

SUMMERTON — William D. “Bill” Glenn Jr., 68, husband of Linda Dameron Glenn, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at his home. Born Jan. 4, 1932, in Greer, he was a son of the late William Douglas Glenn Sr. and Minnie Lister Glenn. Mr. Glenn attended Greer public schools and was a lifelong resident of Greer before moving to Summerton two years ago. He retired in 1986 from McAlister Square Mall as operations manager. He raised peaches, apples and vegetables at his home on S.C. Highway 290 North, Taylors. He was first married to the late Betty Thompson Glenn. Survivors besides his wife include a son, David A. Glenn of Taylors; a daughter and son-in-law, Steve and Kim Bagwell of Taylors; and a stepdaughter, Lisa M. Moore of Greenville. Memorials may be made to Tuomey Regional Hospice, c/o Dennis Reynolds, 31 E. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29151. Stephens Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

CORINE P. GRAHAM

LAKE CITY — Corine Peterson Graham, 79, widow of Joseph Graham, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000. Born in Cades, she was a daughter of the late Ransom “Don” Peterson and Annie Mae Barnes Peterson. Mrs. Graham was a member of Great St. James AME Church, where she served on the usher board, stewardess board, missionary, Willing Workers Club and secretary of the church. She was a 1973 graduate of the Adult School in Lake City. Survivors include a son, Joseph D. Graham of Lake City; a daughter, Geneva Singletary of Belle Glade, Fla.; three brothers, Willie Peterson of Atlanta, Ga., Staff Sgt. Howard Peterson of Washington, D.C., and John Brown of Kingstree; six sisters, Alberta Johnson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Levenia Graham of Mullins, Betsy Canty and Deloris White, both of lake City, Florence Whitfield of Salters and Evangelist Donna Davis of Buffalo, N.Y.; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a child, Josephine. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greater St. James AME Church, Moore Street, with the Rev. James Glisson officiating. Burial will be in Martha Crosby Cemetery. Green’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JEREMY M. HICKS

Jeremy Michael Hicks, 14, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Jeremy was born in Sumter, S.C., a son of James Michael and Jennifer Wand Hicks. He was a ninth-grade student at Sumter Academy, a member of Westside Baptist Church and a member of the Bible Study Program of Westside. Surviving in addition to his parents of Sumter are three brothers, Michael Daniel Hicks, James Albert Hicks III and Zachary Louis Hicks, all of Sumter; paternal grandparents, James and Mary Hicks of Sumter; maternal grandmother, Claire Wand of Sumter; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Wand of Texas; maternal great-grandmother, Louise Duplessis of Darrow, La.; paternal aunts and uncles, Johnny and Cynthia Steele along with James and Elizabeth Williams, all of Sumter; maternal aunts and uncles, Donald L. Wand and wife, Kathleen, of Lincolnton, N.C., Michelle Wand Herod of Sumter, Anne Wand Goodson and husband, Max, of Sumter, Connie Wand Robertson and husband, Butch, of Hickory, N.C., Chris L. Wand of Columbia, Stephen L. Wand and wife, Julie, of Jacksonville, N.C., and Catherine Wand Buchanan and husband, Johnny, of Sumter. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Donald Wand; paternal great-grandfather, W.I. Duplessis; and paternal uncle, Martin L. Wand. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Westside Baptist Church on Pinewood Road in Sumter with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dale Atkinson, Ken Nesbitt, John Litaker, Carl Smith, Chuck Lowder and Harold Johnson. DAVID L. JETER

David Lee Jeter died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 14, 1943, in Nesmith in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Charles and Edna Mae Jones Jeter. Mr. Jeter joined St. James United Methodist Church in his youth and was a member of the Methodist Men Organization. He attended Winn Elementary School and was a 1961 graduate of Lincoln High School. He moved to New York and was employed at the Port Authority for more than 20 years. He was employed since 1984 by Byrnes Medical Center as a medical technician and also at Security Management as a security officer. Survivors include a devoted friend, Rachael M. Joe of Sumter; two special children, Edward and Elizabeth Joe; five brothers, Charles Jeter Jr. of Salisbury, N.C., Henry “Tracey” Jeter and Retired Sgt. 1st Class Fred L. Jeter, both of Sumter, Retired Master Sgt. Albert Jeter of North Charleston and Rodney Jeter of Germantown, Md.; five sisters, Angie J. Porter, Emily J. Maple, Gwendolyn J. Bradley and Gretchen Jeter, all of Sumter, and Pamela J. Carr of McQuire AFB, N.J. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. H.B. Shaw, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Jesse Jones and the Rev. Angela Shaw. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday. The funeral procession will leave from the home of Rachael Joe, 531 W. Oakland Ave. The family will receive friends at the same home and also at 45 Larkin St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES E. MAYNARD

CHARLESTON — James Edmund Maynard, husband of Carol Ferrara Maynard, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2000. Born Oct. 16, 1940, in Lee County, he was a son of the late George Maynard and Pearl Barrington Maynard. Professor Maynard was a member of Harbor View Presbyterian Church. He was a librarian with The Citadel for 32 years, a graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter and Berry College in Georgia, and he received an M.B.A. from Central Michigan University, an M.L.S. from L.S.U. and a doctor of philosophy degree from Nova University in Florida. He belonged to the S.C. Library Association, Southeastern Library Association, American Library Association and the American Association of Professors. Survivors besides his wife of Charleston include a son, Robert Treacy of Anderson; two sisters, Frances Cole of Arizona and Libby Beckwith of Nevada; and two half-brothers, Richard and Watson Maynard, both of Sumter. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, in the Summerall Chapel of The Citadel. A reception will immediately follow the service at the home of the library director, LTC Angie Leclercq, 103 Register Road, on The Citadel campus. COLUMBIA — James Rivers Jr., husband of Wilhelmina Jacobs Rivers, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center. Born May 14, 1925, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James Rivers Sr. and Charlotte Haile Rivers. Mr. Rivers attended Sumter County public schools. He was a member of Willow Grove AME Church. Survivors include three sons, James Rivers III of Atlanta, Ga., David Rivers of Dalzell and Jerry Rivers of Bronx, N.Y.; a daughter, Cynthia R. Whiting of Sumter; two sisters, Nancy R. Kershaw of Sumter and Corneliah R. Singleton of Dalzell; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Rivers and Martha Rivers; two brothers, Dobey Rivers Sr. and David Rivers; and a sister, Estelle Rivers Alston. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Willow Grove AME Church in Horatio with the Rev. Vernon Dixon, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Laddie Howard, the Rev. Charlie Howard, the Rev. Linda Richbow and the Rev. E.W. Palmer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Nephews will be pallbearers, and nieces will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 2:25 p.m. from the home, 5640 Fish Road, Dalzell. The family will receive friends at the same home.
