SWANSEA — Jossie S. Trimnal, 63, widow of Alvin Ross Trimnal, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000. Born in Lancaster, she was a daughter of the late Dewey Wakeford and Edna Faile Scott. Mrs. Trimnal had been a resident of Swansea since 1969. Survivors include a son, Randy Trimnal and his fiance, Cindy, and her daughters, Jenny and Jessica of Sandy Run; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda T. and Tony Ellis of Sumter; two brothers, Rowland Scott of Lancaster and Dewey Scott of Florida; two sisters, Bernice Hill and Ruth Mackey, both of Lancaster; grandchildren, Scoshi Dollard of Sumter, Rusty Smith of Orangeburg, Chris Trimnal of Columbia, Brandon Trimnal and Jesse Trimnal, both of Sandy Run; and great-grandchildren, Hunter Smith and Madyson Dollard, both of Sumter, and “Little Rusty” Smith and Kaitlyn Smith, both of Orangeburg. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Mizpah Baptist Church cemetery in Lee County with the Rev. Lloyd Brewer officiating. BISHOPVILLE — Robert Anthony Wilson, 41, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Shirley Elizabeth Davis Wilson Reid and the late James L. Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a member of Community Bible Church. Survivors besides his mother include his stepfather, Don Reid; a brother, Allen Wilson; a sister, Melissa Wilson; and his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Davis. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Wilson Davis. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Community Bible Church with the Rev. Jerry Peacock officiating. MANNING — Eula C. Martin Godwin, 79, widow of S.P. Godwin, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, from injuries suffered in an accident. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Joe H. and Allie Barfield Coker. Mrs. Godwin was a homemaker and member of Hebron Independent Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the church. She was first married to the late Jack A. Martin. Survivors include a daughter, Marian M. Sullivan of Columbia; four sons, Jack L. (Brenda) Martin of Charleston, Joe A. (Cynthia) Martin of Cades, H. Donald (Deane) Martin of Lake City and Rae E. (Dale) Martin of Leesville; a brother, Buck (Betty) Coker of Coward; five sisters, Naomi (Billy) Passailaigue of North Charleston, Nancy (Paul) Threatt of Lancaster, Louetta Strickland of Olanta, Margaret Prosser of Coward and Oree (Woodrow) Lee of Coward; two half- brothers, S.H. “Snooks” (Marilyn) Coker of Bennettsville and Jay (Cathy) Coker of Columbia; a half-sister, Annie Lou (Rob) Rodgers of Raleigh, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Jeremy Michael Hicks, 14, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Jeremy was born in Sumter, S.C., a son of James Michael and Jennifer Wand Hicks. He was a ninth-grade student at Sumter Academy, a member of Westside Baptist Church and a member of the Bible Study Program of Westside. Surviving in addition to his parents of Sumter are three brothers, Michael Daniel Hicks, James Albert Hicks III and Zachary Louis Hicks, all of Sumter; paternal grandparents, James and Mary Hicks of Sumter; maternal grandmother, Claire Wand of Sumter; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Wand of Texas; maternal great-grandmother, Louise Duplessis of Darrow, La.; paternal aunts and uncles, Johnny and Cynthia Steele along with James and Elizabeth Williams, all of Sumter; maternal aunts and uncles, Donald L. Wand and wife, Kathleen, of Lincolnton, N.C., Michelle Wand Herod of Sumter, Anne Wand Goodson and husband, Max, of Sumter, Connie Wand Robertson and husband, Butch, of Hickory, N.C., Chris L. OLANTA — Samuel “Buster” Rush, 74, died Saturday morning, Oct. 14, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence after an extended illness. Born Dec. 24, 1925, in the Olanta community of Florence County, he was a son of the late Hilliard Turner Rush and Elvira McMillian Rush. Mr. Rush attended Union Hill School. In his early youth, he accepted Christ and joined Oak Grove AME Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was the recipient of a World War II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a retired employee of Seco’s Metal Corp. of White Plains, N.Y., as a wire drawer after more than 30 years. Survivors include four sons, Arris Rush of Fayetteville, N.C., Allard Rush of Philadelphia, Pa., Sam Rush of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Eric Rush of White Plains; three daughters, Joretha Wilson of Lake City, Patriaia English of Bronx, N.Y., and Delora White of Timmonsville; two brothers, Carlia Rush of Olanta and Elton Rush of Bronx; three sisters, Rebecca Hammond and Gracie Anderson, both of Florence, and Teresa Hughes of Chesapeake, Va.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. MANNING — Allison Sloan Chandler Smith, 20, wife of James R. Smith, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 16, 1979, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Ray Elbert Chandler Jr. and Virginia Rawlinson Martin. She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Manning High School, and she attended the University of South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and the College of Charleston. Mrs. Smith was a certified personal trainer. Survivors besides her husband of Charleston, her father of Manning and her mother of Manning include her stepfather, William Elliott Martin of Manning; her maternal grandmother, Carolyn Rawlinson Phillips of Manning; her maternal stepgrandfather, James Carson Phillips of Manning; her paternal grandparents, Ray Elbert Chandler Sr. and Katherine Baker Chandler of Abbeville; and three stepdaughters, April Hunter Martin of Columbia, Misty Elliott Martin of Greensboro and Crystal Star Martin of Arizona. HARRY SPANN

Harry Spann, 79, of 43 Second Ave., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Eddie Spann and Martha Bradley Spann. Mr. Spann served in the U.S. Navy from March 14, 1943, until March 14, 1974, receiving an honorable discharge after serving 31 years. During his tour of duty, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, nine Good Conduct medals, Korean Ribbon with two stars, United Nations Ribbon, the Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe clasp), the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon and the Navy Unit Commendation Award. Survivors include three sons, John K. (Sharon) Spann of Nausa, N.H., Harry Spann Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., and Courtney Spann of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Tina C. Spann of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Cleveland Spann of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Maude Bracey of Philadelphia and Rosa Jefferson of Sumter; a devoted niece, Tiny Mae Daniels of the home; and a host of other relatives. WILLIAM S. WRIGHT

COLUMBIA — William Simuel “Sim” Wright, husband of Tanya McHerrin Wright, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born May 9, 1953, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Martha Wade Wright and the late William C. Wright. Mr. Wright became a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church on July 10, 1965. He graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1970 and St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va., in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He also received a bachelor’s degree in music from Benedict College and a certification in carpentry from Midlands Technical College. Upon graduation, he began his professional employment with the state Department of Social Services in Sumter, followed by the City of Columbia’s Water Department. As a self-employed contractor, he was responsible for the development and renovation of many homes and businesses in Sumter and Columbia. At the time of his death, he was employed as a facilities management specialist for Sears of Columbia. His passion for music was a major part of his life, and he played for several groups including Midnight Blue, Perfect Fitt, Band Marcel and, most recently, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Survivors besides his wife of Columbia include a son, Michael Cornelius of Columbia; a brother, Wayne A. Wright of Langley AFB, Va.; and a sister, Debbie Wright Singletary of Dalzell. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, U.S. 521, Rembert, with the Rev. Anthony Taylor Sr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. O.S. Scott, R.E. Mrs. Boyle was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter and was a retired Safe Federal Credit Union, Shaw Air Force Base loan officer. Survivors include two sons, William A. SUMMERTON — Samuel “Sammie” Brailsford died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at his home. Born April 24, 1933, in Summerton, he was a son of Idella Tindal Brailsford and the late Frediand Brailsford. Mr. Brailsford attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of Santee AME Church. Survivors besides his mother of Summerton include four brothers, Jonathan Brailsford and James Brailsford, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Frediand Brailsford Jr. and Thomas Brailsford, both of Baltimore, Md.; and three sisters, Willie Mae Merritt of Raleigh, N.C., Dorothy Garris of Baltimore and Christie Franked of Summerton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Emanuel Brailsford; and a sister, Chole Bell Harvin. GLEN BURNIE, Md. — Roy E. Brunson, 81, husband of Kathleen Glanville Brunson, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, from complications of a 16-month illness from lung cancer. Born Jan. 26, 1919, in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the late David Murray Brunson Sr. and Lucille Barwick Brunson. Mr. Brunson had lived in Maryland for 54 years. He retired in 1973 and was previously employed by Tidewater Oil Co. Mr. Brunson was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, where he met and married his wife. He enjoyed golf, gardening, fishing, playing pool and visiting with his family in South Carolina. Survivors besides his wife of 56 years include a daughter, Joyce Raley and her husband, Steven Raley, of Glen Burnie; a brother, Arthur Brunson of Sumter; a sister, Louise Justice of Manning, S.C., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Murray Brunson Jr.; and a sister, Gladys Mazza. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at George J. MANNING — Freddie Louis Jones, 88, died today, Oct. 16, 2000, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton. Born March 25, 1912, in Indiantown, he was a son of the late Leonard and Molly Suggs Jones. Mr. Jones was a retired carpenter from Daniels Construction after 24 years, and a former employee of the City of Manning and Campbell’s Soup in Sumter. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Home Branch Baptist Church. He was first married to the late Irene D. Jones, and then to the late Ruth Bryant Jones. Survivors include four sons, James A. Jones of Ellijay, Ga., Jerry D. Jones of Hemingway, William S. Jones of Manning and Edward “Bitsy” Bryant of Moyock, N.C.; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home. LUCILLE S. SANDERS

Lucille Service Sanders died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter West. Born March 1, 1911, in Lee County, she attended Sumter County public schools. Mrs. Sanders was a member of Salem Baptist Church. She was first married to the late Thomas Service, and then to the late Mack Sanders. Survivors include three grandchildren, Andrew Mae Service, Andrew Service Jr. and Levelle Anthony, all of Sumter; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Service Sr. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Community Funeral Home, 353 Manning Ave.,, with Bishop Jeffery Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Bradford Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 214 King St. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES FARMER

James Farmer died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000. Mr. Farmer was born Dec. 31, 1907. The family will receive friends at 138 Shannon Ave., Sumter. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

EDNA J. HINSON

MANNING — Edna Jackson Hinson, 76, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton. Services will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home.

GENEVA A. RIVERS

Geneva Anderson Rivers, wife of Clarence Bernard Blaney Rivers Sr., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at her residence in New York. Born July 19, 1935, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Alma Virginia Boyd Anderson and the late George Washington Anderson Sr. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Arnold “Butch” Jackson, 112 Brand St., Sumter. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel.

JAMES RIVERS JR.

COLUMBIA — James Rivers Jr., husband of Wihelmena J. Rivers, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Baptist Hospital. Born May 14, 1925, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Rivers Sr. and Charolette Hail Rivers. The family will receive friends at 5640 Fish Road. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home.

SAMUEL RUSH

OLANTA — Samuel Rush, 74, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born Dec. 24, 1925, in Olanta, he was a son of the late Hillard Turner Rush and Elvira McMillian Rush. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother and sister-in-law Carlia and Fannie Rush, Route 1, Box 292, DuBose Road, Olanta. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

LILLIAN N. BAILEY

Lillian N. Bailey, 73, wife of Paul M. Bailey, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Edward Nunnery and the late Christine Deas Nunnery. Mrs. Bailey was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and was retired from Santee Print Works after 42 years of service. Survivors besides her husband include three sons, Wilson Hyatt of Greenville, Jack Hyatt of Sumter and Phillip Hyatt of Columbia; two sisters, Azile Geddings of Rock Hill and Lucille Ellisor of Columbia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Nunnery, Julian Nunnery and Edward Nunnery; and two sisters, and two sisters, Maybelle Capell and Pauline Hyatt. Funeral Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Thrower officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Hyatt, Keith Hyatt, David Hyatt, Henry Wilson, Jim Rice and Tripp White. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home, 10 Oak Haven Court. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THELMA BROWN

SUMMERTON — Thelma Ruth McDowell Brown, 93, widow of Henry Brown Sr., died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at her residence. Born May 9, 1907, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Agatha McDowell. Mrs. Brown attended Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton. At an early age she joined St. Matthews AME Church. After marrying, she joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church of Summerton, where she was active in the Willing Workers Ministry, Helping Hand Ministry and the missionaries. She was also a member of the NAACP and an active participant in the early Civil Rights Movement. Survivors include four sons, Henry Brown Jr. and Nathaniel Brown, both of Washington, D.C., Harrison Brown of Sumter and Thomas Brown of Orangeburg; six daughters, Eva Quarles of Washington, D.C., Geneva Finney of Orangeburg, Marian Duren of Wilmington, N.C., Ethel Marshall of Lynchburg, Va., Maxine Reynolds of Oakland, Calif. and Beatrice Rivers of the home; four brothers, Lester Richburg of Baltimore, Md., Omega Richburg and Allen Richburg, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Julian Richburg of Columbia; a sister, Edith Ragin of Philadelphia, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children, Vera and Howard. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton, with the Rev. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Tommie Duren assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Nathaniel Brown, Harrison Brown, Thomas Brown, Robert Marshall Sr., Alfred Reynolds and Carlos Duren. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons and trustees of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Floral bearers will be granddaughter and nieces. The family will receive friends at the home, Route 3, Box 645, Larry King Jr. Highway, Summerton. The body will be placed in the church an hour before the service. Dyson’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
