PHILADELPHIA — Ethel Mae Dingle Watson, formerly of Manning, S.C., widow of the Rev. George E. Watson, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at Temple University Hospital after a brief illness. Born April 12, 1934, in Manning, she was daughter of the late Deacon Earnest Dingle and Edith Robinson Dingle. Mrs. Watson attended the public schools of Clarendon County, S.C., and was a 1957 graduate of Manning Training School. In her youth, she joined Mt. Chapel Baptist Church and later joined St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Philadelphia, where her husband was the founder and pastor. Mrs. Watson was instrumental in organizing the missionary, Sunday school, Bible school and youth department. She joined Morris Chapel Baptist Church in 1992 and served as junior class Sunday school teacher, president of the senior missionary, vocal choir, assistant superintendent and member of the Star of East Club, which assisted needy families. Mrs. Watson also operated a day care center and was a member of the Philadelphia Neighborhood Prayer Band. Survivors include three sisters, Ella Lemon and Elma Blackwell, both of Manning, and Janet Bradley of Evanston, Ill.; and four brothers, James Dingle and Henry Dingle, both of Manning, the Rev. Lee Earnest Dingle of Evanston and Joseph Dingle Sr. of Warner Robins, Ga. A brother, Sam Junior Dingle, and a sister, Ruth Dingle Thames, both preceded Mrs. Watson in death. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Chapel Baptist Church in the Jordan community of Manning with the Rev. Lewis W. Walker Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Mose Dingle, Johnny Kinlaw, Lee Earnest Dingle and Sam Miller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Paul and Elma Blackwell, Bozard Street, Manning. Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

DALZELL — Carol Marie Myers Turner, 66, wife of Robert H. Turner, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at her home. Born in Royersford, Pa., she was a daughter of the late C. Ray Myers and Catherine Handel Myers. Mrs. Turner was a former volunteer with the Shaw Air Force Base NCO Wives Club and Thrift Shop. She was first married to the late Robert S. Haddon. Survivors besides her husband include a son, William R. Haddon of Aurora, Colo.; three brothers, Robert M. Myers of Somerville, N.J., Daniel R. Myers of Altoona, Pa., and Frederick Myers of Middleton, Ohio; a sister, Reba Branda of Panama City, Fla.; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Whitehead officiating. ALCOLU — Thomas McCray, husband of Sarah Ellen McFadden McCray, died Monday night, Sept. 4, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an illness. Born Sept. 17, 1933, in Alcolu, he was a son of Robert Culton and the late Louise McCray Darley, and a stepson of the late Willie Darley Sr. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Catherine D. Webb, 727 Branchview Drive, Manning. Funeral services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

Marsha Ann Canouse Greig, 56, wife of Peter Greig, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at her residence. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was a daughter of Rowena Girton Canouse and the late Dayton Canouse. Mrs. Greig attended the Watts School of Nursing in Durham, N.C. Survivors besides her mother and husband include a daughter, Keri Greig Ward of Shaw Air Force Base; and two grandchildren, Taylor P. Little and Jessica E. Ward. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter with the Rev. Gene Franklin officiating. PAXVILLE — H. Amelia Curtis Matthews, 92, widow of William C. Matthews, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late George Henry Curtis and Sarah Frances Beach Curtis. Mrs. Matthews was a lifelong member of Paxville Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women and a Sunday school teacher. She attended Columbia College and the Tuomey School of Nursing. Mrs. Matthews was the owner and operator of Matthews Nursing Home. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah “Bootsie” Keith and Suzanne “Suzy” Funderburke, both of Paxville; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Beach Curtis. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Paxville Cemetery with the Revs. Dick Broomall and Eugene Mosier officiating. Pallbearers will be Glenn “Judge” Reynolds, Johnny Lewis, Harold Corbett, Julian Hynes, Billy Geddings and Jim Black. COLUMBIA — Margaret “Margie” Reamer Smith, 62, wife of John Hemby Smith Sr., died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late William Schell Reamer Jr. and Margaret Hamilton Reamer. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Winthrop College and retired from James Carr Associates. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, John Hemby Smith Jr. of Orangeburg and Robert Samuel Smith of Hartsville; two daughters, Susan Smith Adkins of Rock Hill and Trudie Smith Austin of Columbia; two brothers, William Schell Reamer III and James Cornelius Reamer, both of Columbia; a sister, Ida Reamer Carson of Columbia; and six grandchildren. A granddaughter preceded Mrs. Smith in death. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Park. GREELEYVILLE — Lawrence Cantey, husband of Cloren Peterson Cantey, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia after an illness. Born Sept. 1, 1933, in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Gus Cantey Sr. and Alena Hilton Cantey. The family will receive friends at the home, Route 2, Box 262, Long Branch Road. Lillian Smoot died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 24, 1922, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Estelle Robinson. Mrs. Smoot joined Allen Chapel AME Church in her youth and attended the public schools of Sumter County. She retired from Florida Green House in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Survivors include four sons, Leroy Robinson, James White, Richard Smoot Jr. and Robert Smoot, all of Sumter; a brother, Thomas Robinson of New York; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Julius McDowell Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. COLUMBIA — Lewis “J.C.” Bennett Jr. died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center. Born Feb. 23, 1938, in Sumter, he was a son of Sallie Bennett and the late Lewis Bennett Jr. Mr. Bennett was a former member of Jehovah Baptist Church and later became a member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army. Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include his wife, Thelma Bennett of Sumter; a son, Lewis Bennett III of Fayetteville, N.C.; seven daughters, Peggy Gravely, Cindy Keith, Jane Moore, Sallie McDuffie, Kathey Bennett, and Tammie Bennett, all of Sumter, and Bonnie McDaniel of Charlotte, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Dorothy Mae Taylor. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, with the Rev. Larry C. Weston, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Florence National Cemetery. Caline Riley Stinney Ballard died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 8, 1926, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late George Riley Sr. and Lorena Johnson Riley. Mrs. Ballard attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she accepted Christ and joined New Hope UME Church, where she served on the missionary society and the Sons and Daughters of Job. She later joined Brown Chapel UME Church, where she was the mother of the church and a member of the missionary society. She was first married to the late Deacon Joseph Stinney Sr., and then to the late Christopher C. Ballard. Survivors include two sons, George Stinney and Joseph Stinney Jr., both of Sumter; a daughter, Doris Stinney of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Helen Solomon of Columbia and Martha Ballard Myers of Philadelphia, Pa.; 18 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three stepdaughters, and by three sisters, Annie M. Holmes, Sylvia Rich and Alethia Dickerson. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Brown Chapel UME Church, with the Rev. Mary L. Brailsford, pastor, and the Revs. Roosevelt Boyd and E.J. Charles “Chuck” Louie Prescott, 38, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Doris Lucas Prescott and the late James Cecil Prescott Sr. He was a truck driver for Mobile Storage of Sumter. Survivors in addition to his mother are a brother, James “Jimmy” C. Prescott Jr. and his wife, Liz, of Sumter; a nephew, J.C. Prescott III; and a niece, Cathy Prescott. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Alfred James Gaymon and Mary Floyd Gaymon. He was a farmer and attended Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was a member of the Sunday school. Survivors in addition to his wife of Timmonsville include two daughters, Louise Kirby and her husband, B.G., and Kathy Driggers and her husband, Terry, all of Florence; two sons, Alfred Gaymon and his wife, Alice, of Timmonsville and Lloyd Gaymon and his wife, Shirley, of Newport, N.C.; a brother, the Rev. Freddie Gaymon of Sumter; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Carl Jenkins Gaymon. Lucille Singleton Pack, widow of Moses “Moise” Pack, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at her home. Born Feb. 3, 1913, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Israel and Emma Allen Singleton. Mrs. Pack distinguished herself as a Christian in her youth. She was a member of Enon Missionary Baptist Church, where she was respected as church mother. She served on the senior choir and missionary ministry for more than 50 years and was a member of the Charity Outreach Club. She retired from Sumter School District 17 and was a self-employed domestic engineer for the Yates and Ackerman family for a number of years. Survivors include a son, Russell Pack of Sumter; two daughters, Rose Mae Smith of Sumter and Bernice Anderson of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters, Para Lee Couch of New Castle, Del., Mamie Lee Wilder of Wilmington, N.C., and Shirley Brown and Gladys Cole, both of Connecticut; four grandchildren whom she reared, Diane Grinnell, Hercules Smith Jr. and Vanessa Canty, all of Sumter, and Anita Smith of Arlington, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and six sisters. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Enon Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stanley E. Hayes Sr., pastor, officiating, assisted by minister Gregory Jackson, the Rev. Sammie Simmons and Dr. Ralph W. Canty. Burial will be in Cain Cemetery. FLORENCE — Elizabeth “Carrie Lee” Mickens, 61, wife of James Mickens, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 13, 1939, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Granderson Pearson and Mary Peterson Pearson. She attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, she joined the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board and the Missionary Unit No. 4. She was a very well-known, loving, spiritual and warm-hearted lady throughout the community and church. Survivors include three sons, James Mickens of Bishopville, David Mickens of Lamar and Lonell Mickens of Patterson, N.J.; six daughters, Shirley Simon, Etta Mickens and Dolly Lesane, all of Bishopville, Georgia Martin of Dalzell, Mary Johnson of Sumter and Essie Hickman of North Carolina; a brother, Isaac Pearson of the home; three adopted daughters, Diann Hickman, Edna Robinson and Angela Century, all of Bishopville; two adopted sons, Ray Pearson and Herbert Pearson, both of Bishopville; 37 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Pearson and Daniel Pearson; and two sisters, Dora Pearson and Rebecca Davis. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, McDuffie Road, Ashwood community, with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, pastor, officiating and assisted by the Rev. SUMMERTON — Walter “Ronnie” Fleming, 48, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at his home, 105 Wendy Way, Summerville. Born Jan. 16, 1952, in Charleston, he was a son of Ellan Fleming and the late Mary Felder Fleming. Mr. Fleming attended Charleston County public schools and was a graduate of Bond’s Wilson High School. He also attended Allen University in Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army for 3½ years and was honorably discharged. Survivors besides his father of Charleston include a daughter, Chacumbe Laru Fleming of Tacoma, Wash.; two brothers, James Felder of Columbia and Larry Fleming of Charleston; and a sister, Mary Johnson of Charleston. He was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Fleming. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Union Cypress AME Church in the Jordan community of Manning with the Rev. Minister Lottie McDaniel Alston, wife of James Alston Jr., died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 19, 1944, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Mattie Floyd McDaniel and the late James McDaniel Sr. Mrs. Alston attended Live Oak and Rafting Creek elementary schools in Rembert, and later graduated from Boylan Haven-Mather Academy of Camden. She was a faithful member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert, where she served as treasurer of the gospel choir, president of the Gospel-Ettes, secretary of the missionary society, treasurer of the fellowship and outreach ministry, member of the usher board and assistant secretary of the Wateree Baptist Association Lower Division. She preached her initial sermon in March 1998, entitled “A Cry In The Wilderness.” She worked faithfully as a child-finder facilitator with School District 2. Survivors besides her husband and mother of Sumter include a son, Ulessly Alston of Sumter; a daughter, Audrey Ragland of Wilson, N.C.; a brother, James McDaniel of Ridgeway; two sisters, Rebecca Murphy of Bronx, N.Y., and Hazel McDaniel of Rembert; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister John F. Kennedy, the Rev. Henry J. Murray, the Rev. Ellie W. Palmer and Elder M.K. Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Deacons and members of the trustee board of Rafting Creek Baptist Church and members of the steward board of High Hill Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. The funeral procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the home, 6415 Fish Road, Dalzell. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT BURGESS

COLUMBIA — Robert “Tonkey” Burgess of Columbia and formerly of Greeleyville, 54, husband of Maedell Sutton-Burgess, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000. Born in Greeleyville, he was a son of the late William and Emma Watson Burgess. Mr. Burgess was a graduate of C.E. Murray High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a truck driver of Greeleyville and Columbia. Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Olivia Eden of Covington, La., and Crystal Gail Johnson of West Columbia; a stepson, James Sutton Jr. of the home; four brothers, William Burgess Jr. of Mullins, Marshall Burgess of Brooklyn, N.Y., Freddie Burgess of Yonkers, N.Y., and Gilbert Burgess of Coral Springs, Fla.; three sisters, Mildred Green of Bronx, N.Y., Wilma Valentin of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Carolyn Eaddy of Columbia; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Good Hope Baptist Church in Greeleyville with the Rev. Johnnie Williams officiating, assisted by the Rev. Tommy Shubrick, pastor. Burial will be in Big Spring Cemetery in Greeleyville. Green’s Funeral Home in Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

MACK N. FRIERSON

Mack Neil Frierson died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 12, 1945, in Richmond, Va., he was a son of Carola Billie Frierson and the late Ernest Frierson. Mr. Frierson attended Sumter County public schools and was a graduate of Eastern High School. He was an avid football and baseball player. He was a former employee of Modern Dye Co., Santee Print and Cooper Tools for 21 years. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and joined Congruity Presbyterian Church, where he served faithfully as a youth adviser, van driver, member of the board of trustees, treasurer of the gospel choir, member of Presbyterian Men’s Council and member of the homecoming committee. Survivors besides his mother of Richmond include two sons, Gary Van Buren of Philadelphia, Pa., and Kevin Frierson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Pamela Frierson of Newark, Del.; a brother, John Henry Frierson of Sumter; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ernestine Frierson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Congruity Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. The family will receive friends at the home, Route 1, Box 1702, Alcolu. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

AMANDA McFADDEN

OLANTA — Amanda McFadden, 83, widow of Richard McFadden Sr., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Masaree Green. Mrs. McFadden was a member of Oak Grove AME Church, where she served as president of the Pulpit Aide Club and gospel choir. Survivors include four sons, Eugene McFadden of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Richard McFadden Jr. of Hollywood, Fla., Bill McFadden of Paterson, N.J., and Larry McFadden of Olanta; three daughters, Ruby Holmes and Rosa Garland, both of Olanta, and Emma Craighead of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a special son, Terrance McFadden of the home; her mother-in-law, Nancy McFadden of Olanta; 33 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in New McFadden Cemetery. Green’s Funeral Home in Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

HARRY RAGIN

SUMMERTON — Harry Ragin, 87, widower of Rachel Dallas Ragin, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton. Born Sept. 15, 1912, in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Aaron Ragin and Rozita Baxter Ragin. Mr. Ragin attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a lifelong member of Liberty Hill AME Church. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include a daughter, Lucretia Ragin Singleton of the home; a sister, Maggie Rivers of Wilmington, N.C.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine Ragin; and a brother, Thomas Ragin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the home of his daughter, Lucretia Ragin Singleton, Miles Road, P.O. Box 807, Summerton. The family will receive friends at the same home. Summerton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

MACK W. RHODES

Mack Willie Rhodes died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at his home. Born Feb. 25, 1898, in the Sardinia community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Robert and Olivia Williams Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes attended parochial schools in Clarendon County. He joined Melina Presbyterian Church in his youth, where he actively served as Sunday school superintendent, member of the board of trustees, session, men’s council, adult Sunday school class, Christian education committee, senior choir and as president of the senior choir. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, Golden Lodge No. 78 and the Order of Eastern Star, St. Mary Chapter No. 156. He was first married to the late Annie Hammett Rhodes and then to the late Carrie Rhodes. Survivors include two sons, Albert Rhodes of Troy, N.Y., and Paul Rhodes of Bronx, N.Y.; five daughters, Susanna H. Hannibal of Sumter, Annie Rhodes Muldrow of Lindenwold, N.J., Daisy Rhodes Sims and Viola Rhodes, both of Bronx, N.Y., and Maggie Smith of New Jersey; two brothers, Aaron Rhodes of Gable and Martin Rhodes of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Louise Peoples of Charleston and Eula Felder of Philadelphia, Pa.; 40 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six children, Calvin Rhodes, John Rhodes, Adranna Rhodes Cooper, Hattie Rhodes Burgess, Sam Rhodes and McArthur Rhodes; and a sister, Lizzie McFadden. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Melina Presbyterian Church in Gable with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 3050 E. Brewington Road. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

BURNEASE R. THOMPSON

JORDAN — Burnease Robinson Thompson, 83, widow of Perry Thompson, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an extended illness. Born July 17, 1917, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Joe Robinson and Rheatis Hilton Robinson. Mrs. Thompson attended Clarendon County public schools. In her early youth, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Antioch Baptist Church. After her marriage, she joined Union Cypress AME Church, where she served as a class leader, trustee, member of the missionary society and Sunday school treasurer for more than 50 years. She was also a member of YWCA Lodge No. 7. Survivors include a son, Dwight Thompson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three daughters, Ernestine Overton, Lillie Bush, and Rheatis Thompson-Brown, all of Brooklyn; a grandson she reared as her own, Dwayne Thompson of the home; a sister, Rheatis Grant of Dalzell; seven additional grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Joe Thompson; and two daughters, Mary Thompson and Martha Thompson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Cypress AME Church, S.C. Highway 260, in the Jordan community of Manning, with the Rev. Melissa W. Green, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Manuel Fogel, the Rev. Jerry Dingle, the Rev. O’Donald Dingle and Minister Vivian Canty. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 647 Thompson Drive, in the Jordan community of Manning. Samuels Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Caline Stinney Ballard died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

FLORENCE — Elizabeth Mickens, wife of James Mickens, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 13, 1939, in Lee County.
