JORDAN — Burnease Robinson Thompson, 83, widow of Perry Thompson, died this morning, Aug. 31, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an extended illness. Born July 17, 1917, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Joe Robinson and Rheatis Hilton Robinson. The family will receive friends at the home, 647 Thompson Drive, in the Jordan community. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning.

Marie Charles Copeland, widow of James P. Copeland, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at her home. Born July 9, 1910, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Bennie Charles and Sarah Charles Montgomery. Mrs. Copeland was a faithful member of Unionville AME Church, where she served on the stewardess board and sang on the senior choir. Survivors include a son, James Copeland Jr. of New York; two daughters, Geneva Copeland of the home and Ruthann Hampton of Mayesville; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Herbert Lee Copeland Sr.; a daughter, Elizabeth Copeland; four brothers, Bernard, Tom, Bennie and Walter Charles; and a sister, Sadie Charles Plowden. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Unionville AME Church in Mayesville with the Rev. Joshua Dupree, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 989 Huddersfield Road, Sumter. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Hattie Elliott, 78, widow of Freddie Elliott, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Hopewell Health Care Center. Born June 15, 1922, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ned and Mary “Amy” Rivers. Mrs. Elliott attended Sumter County public schools. In her early youth, she was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include a son, Ned Elliott of Sumter; a brother, Ned Rivers Sr. of Barnwell; a sister, Florence “Azalea” White of Sumter; a granddaughter, Maggie Elliott of Sumter; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Elliott; a brother, Henry Rivers; and five sisters, Mary Rivers, Annie Rivers, Ethel Rivers, Sarah Rivers and Lavenia Gary. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. Emma Raffield Gatling, 79, widow of Quentin T. Gatling, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at the home of her daughter in Columbia. Born in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late William D. Raffield and Jessie Andrae Raffield. Mrs. Gatling was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She retired from the S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Department. Survivors include two daughters, Diane G. Kerenick of Columbia and Dorothy “Chip” Stokes of Sumter; a sister, Dorothy R. Hill of Germantown, Tenn.; and three grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. James Adams and the Rev. Phil Jones officiating. She attended the public schools in Philadelphia and Lee County. She was a member of St. John AME Church. Survivors besides her father of Philadelphia include two daughters, Anique Jackson and Nyasha Jackson, both of the home; five grandchildren of the home; a brother, Rodney Jackson of Jacksonville, Fla.; two uncles, Thomas Hickmon of Bishopville and Isaiah Hickmon of Philadelphia; and two aunts, Mozelle Isaac of Bishopville and Pearl Bradley of Saginaw, Mich. Johnnie Curtis Knight, 68, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Camden, he was a son of the late John M. and Martha Melton Knight. Mr. Knight was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran and retired from Lugoff Tire Service. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a son, William “Billy” Curtis Knight of North Carolina; a daughter, Rhonda Gail Knight of Hartsville; a stepdaughter, Donna Lynn Jackson of Hartsville; four sisters, Naomi Farrow of Camden and Peggy Bowers, Shirley Anderson and Joyce Boykin, all of Sumter; three stepbrothers, Johnnie Knight of Ridgeway, Donnie Knight of Lugoff and Richard Knight of Camden; a stepsister, Vickie Thomas of Lugoff; a grandson, Brandon Curtis Knight; and two stepgrandchildren, Mason Lee Hester and Kaitlynn Rayann Jackson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Carroway. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. SUMMERTON — Lillie Ann Ragin Ogbonna, 41, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. Born Sept. 3, 1958, in Summerton, she was a daughter of Bishop Pinkney Ragin and Annie L. Nelson Ragin. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a 1978 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. In her youth, she joined St. Paul Holiness Church. She was employed at Goat Island Restaurant and Lounge for 15 years. Survivors besides her parents of Summerton include five daughters, Quantae Ragin of Troy, N.Y., Kathy Campbell of Summerton and Fenia P. Ragin, Patricia Ogbonna and Aleashia Ogbonna, all of the home; six brothers, Willie Ragin of Gable, Jonathan Ragin of Rayford, N.C., Robert Ragin of Summerton, John Henry Ragin and Robert Ragin, both of Akron, Ohio, and Thomas Lee Ragin of Sumter; four sisters, Daisy Lawson, Kathy D. Ragin and Fenia Ragin, all of Summerton, and Annie Laura McKenzie of Miami, Fla; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Ragin. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She later moved to New York, N.Y. She retired from the Port Authority of New York City after 25 years as a bridge and toll supervisor. Ruth Cain Crowson, 88, widow of Heyward M. Crowson Sr., died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at a local nursing facility. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late W.O. Cain and Marguerite Nelson Cain. Mrs. Crowson was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she retired as a kindergarten teacher and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She worked part time as a photographer with her husband, Heyward M. Crowson Sr., at The Item for many years. Survivors include a son, Heyward M. “Bruz” Crowson Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Ruth C. Knopf of Sullivans Island and Tutta C. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late George and Mary Margaret McDermott VanArtsdalen. Mrs. Galeone attended St. Marks Episcopal Church of Philadelphia. She retired from Plumb Tool in Philadelphia and then worked for the school system in Monroe, N.C., again retiring. Survivors include a daughter, Sharlene Sedivi and husband, Dave, of Manning. Christine Guinevere Williams Graham Goodson, 62, wife of Gene H. Goodson, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at her home. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Herbert James Williams Sr. and Ora Lee Boykin Williams. Mrs. Goodson was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego. She was a retired registered nurse, having graduated from the Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing. She had been employed at Tuomey Hospital Emergency Room, Hopewell Nursing Center and Wateree Community Actions. Survivors besides her husband include a son, David Graham of Sumter; a daughter, Leigh Anne Graham of Sumter; two brothers, Herbert J. Williams and Melvin E. Williams, both of Sumter; four sisters, Dorothy Smith, Lois Watford and Gayle Boykin, all of Sumter, and Wilma Berry of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Christopher Graham, Ginger Lee Graham and Davi Christine Graham. Born in Bennettsville, he was a son of the late William Calvin McKinnon and Nellie Cornelia McKinnon. Mr. McKinnon was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. He was a retired plant supervisor at Georgia Pacific. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include two daughters, Claudia McKinnon Pratt of Columbus, Ga., and Gloria McKinnon Guida of North Carolina; a brother, James McKinnon of Oklahoma; a sister, Frances McKinnon Newton of Greenville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. LYNCHBURG — Carlisle A. Nesbitt, 76, husband of Lorena Watts Nesbitt, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, in a Columbia hospital after an illness. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late William Franklin Nesbitt and Elizabeth Jackson Nesbitt. Mr. Nesbitt was a retired farmer and tractor mechanic, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Lynchburg American Legion Post No. 140. He served as captain of the Sumter County Fire Department Station 18 for many years, was a former trustee and treasurer for Hudgens Academy and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer for 32 years. Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg include two sons, Roger Nesbitt of Lynchburg and David Nesbitt of Turbeville; two daughters, Joan Goldman of Lynchburg and Sandra Meggs of Melbourne, Fla.; three sisters, Nina McElveen of Lynchburg and Naomi Watford and Alberta Wilson, both of Camden; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, W.T. Nesbitt, Francis Nesbitt and Whit Nesbitt; and a sister, Ruby Lofton. The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Maggie Elliott, 47 Birnie Circle, and at the home of her sister, Florence White, 49 Birnie Circle. Services will be Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

MACK N. FRIERSON

Mack Neil Frierson, 55, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 12, 1945, in Richmond, Va., he was a son of Creola Billie Frierson and the late Ernest Frierson. The family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy Harrison, Route 1, Box 702, Alcolu. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

ANNIE M. CRIM

REMBERT — Annie Mae Crim, 70, of 519 Swift Creek Road, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Good Hope United Methodist Church in Rembert.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Haile’s Funeral Home in Camden is in charge of arrangements.

LILLIE R. OGBONNA

SUMMERTON — Lillie Ann “Lann” Ragin Ogbonna, 41, died this morning, Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston after an illness. Born Sept. 3, 1958, in Summerton, she was a daughter of Bishop Pinkney Ragin and Annie L. Nelson Ragin. The family will receive friends at the home of her parents, S-14 S. Washington St., Summerton. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning.

LAMAR — Elizabeth J. Peoples of 565 Hammer Road died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, in a New York hospital after an illness.

RUTH C. GALEONE

MANNING — Ruby Catherine Galeone, 76, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
She was the mother of Sharlene Sedivi.
Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter.
