FLORENCE — Charles Elijah McKenzie of 1239 Manorway Drive, 58, husband of Evalina Matthews McKenzie, died Saturday evening, Aug. 26, 2000, at his home after an illness. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Treleion Onsmon and Almyrta McElveen McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie was a Master Mason in Amity Lodge No. 340 AFM, a member of Omar Shrine Temple, a member of the Omar Daredevils and a member of Southside Baptist Church. He retired in 1993 as a superintendent for Sumter Builders. Survivors besides his wife of Florence include a son, Chuck McKenzie of Lamar; three daughters, Ginger Tolson of Timmonsville, Terri Palo of Myrtle Beach and Dawn Williamson of Turbeville; a stepdaughter, Peggy Gray of Florence; six brothers, Kinley McKenzie, Roy McKenzie and Robert McKenzie, all of Florence, Gerald McKenzie of Effingham, T.J. McKenzie of Orlando, Fla., and Franklin McKenzie of Garden City; two sisters, Eris Wannamaker of Orangeburg and Julia Lee of Southern Pines, N.C.; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William McKenzie and Tony McKenzie; and a sister, Myrtlee Spencer. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Southside Baptist Church. Harold Jessie Broadway, 73, widower of Helen Mitchum Broadway, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jessie Brantley Broadway and Ruth Hynes Broadway. He was a member of Harmony Church and a retired auto mechanic instructor at Central Carolina Technical School. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Broadway Pendarvis of Sumter; a brother, James Brantley Broadway of Sumter; a sister, Mary Francis Laverdiere of Sumter; and two grandchildren, James Reginald Pendarvis Jr. and Catherine Kessler Pendarvis, both of Sumter. FLORENCE — William Franklin Gainey Sr., 65, husband of Patricia Hollman Gainey, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Florence, he was a son of the late Robert Lee Gainey and Julia Amanda Munn Gainey. He was a graduate of McClenaghan High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He served in the Korean War and acquired the rank of sergeant when he was 19. He was a recipient of the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, CIB, Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a former truck driver for New Dixie Lines and Hemingway Truck Lines and retired after 15 years as a driver for Consolidated Freightways in 1992. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, William F. Gainey Jr., of Florence; three daughters, Frances Strickland of Darlington and Suereese Anderson and Rebecca Morse, both of Florence; a stepdaughter, Tammie Stevens of Florence; two stepsons, Michael Mixon of Darlington and Richard Mixon of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Hubert Gainey of Hartsville and John H. She was retired from civil service at Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Ala. Survivors include a son, Robert C. Ford of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Betty Shofner and her husband, retired Col. ORANGEBURG — Sara Cooper Griffith, 86, widow of Dr. Aaron Rufus Griffith, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at The Methodist Oaks. Born in Mayesville, she was a daughter of the late William Brearley Cooper and Clara Womble Cooper. She attended Winthrop University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a former member of the Tuesday Book Club and the Orangeburg League of Arts. Survivors include a son, Dr. Aaron R. Griffith Jr., and his wife, Colette H. Griffith, of Lexington; a daughter, Jane Griffith Bryant of Orangeburg; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. CHARLOTTE — Ruby Jane Harper Brown, 68, wife of Bobby J. Brown, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at her home. Born Sept. 5, 1931, in Madison, Ga., she was a daughter of Nina Lyerly Harper Mathis of Greenwood and the late Robert Marshall Harper. She was raised in Greenwood and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1949. married in 1951, she spent the next 20 years with her husband and children at U.S. military bases, mainly in Washington, D.C., and Hawaii. After her husband’s retirement from the U.S. Air Force in 1971, they moved to Charlotte, where he still lives. Survivors besides her husband and mother include a daughter Ginger Cox and her husband, Mike Cox, of Sumter; a son, Danny Brown and his wife, Tammy Brown, of Charlotte; a brother, Maurice Harper of Greenwood; five grandchildren, Rodney Cox and his wife, Ricki Cox, Amy Cox, Kimberly Cox, Matthew Brown and Blayke Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Autumn Cox, Noah Cox and Kennedy Cox. He was a retired power plant technician with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was a member of West Ashley Southern Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran and U.S. Air Force veteran who served in World War II. He was a retired warehouseman with Charleston Naval Supply and a member of Pierpont Baptist Church in Charleston. Survivors besides his wife of 60 years include a daughter, Lois Gail and her husband, Evan R. Orr, of Cross; and a granddaughter, Gailian Reedy, a former Ms. Harley-Davidson, of Wadmalaw Island. WADSWORTH, Ohio — Olan Clay Burchett, 72, widower of Lillian Burchett, died Thursday, August 24, 2000, at his home after an extended illness. Born in Russellville, Ky., he was a son of the late Moody Burchett and Mary Burchett. He resided in Wadsworth for 11 months, previously residing in Sumter and Vermilion, Ohio. He was a Army veteran who served in the Korean War and a member of Northside Baptist Church in Sumter. He was an inspector at Ford Motor Company’s assembly plant in Lorain, Ohio, retiring in 1991 with 25 years of service. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Ann Eddy and her husband, Richard Eddy, of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Deborah Lynn Bowers and her husband, James Bowers, of Myrtle Beach; a son, Ronald Burchett and his wife, Sue Burchett, of Vermilion, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Home, 505 E. 9th St., Russellville, Ky. WASHINGTON — William Warren Kenely, 56, widower of Jacqueline P. Kenely, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Washington Adventist Hospital. Born May 31, 1944, in Pickens, he was a son of Emma M. Kenely and the late Joshua W. Kenely. He attended the public schools of Washington and served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1965. He was employed with the government, working in various agencies including the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Treasury. After 30 years of service with the programs branch of the U.S. Treasury, he retired in 1995. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior on Dec. 19, 1999. Survivors besides his mother include a son, Floyd Kenely; two brothers, James F. Kenely of Sumter, and Henry A. Kenely of Lexington Park, Md.; two sisters, Julia A. Arline of Fort Washington, Md., and Cynthia L. Kenely of Upper Marlboro, Md.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Lillie J. Avin, 95, widow of James Ralph Avin, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at a local nursing facility. Born in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Willie B. Johnson and Rosa Galloway Johnson. Mrs. Avin was a former employee of Capitol Department Store. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret G. Frick and her husband, J.D., of Gilbert, and Mary Alice Griffin of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, J. Roland Avin of Pinewood and R. Furman Avin and his wife, Midge, of Sumter; three daughters-in-law, Rosemary Avin of Florence, Betty J. Avin of Sumter and Evelyn Avin of Lithia Springs, Ga.; two sisters, Alma Avin of Pinewood and Ruby Newton of Tampa, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by three sons, Ralph E., Hubert R. and Walter B. Avin; a daughter-in-law, Peggy B. Avin; a son-in-law, William T. Griffin; two great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; six brothers; and five sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 26, at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. DANIEL G. SAMPSON

HORATIO — Daniel George Sampson died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in Atlanta, Ga. Born April 7, 1918, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Daniel Gatewood Sampson and Hattie Jefferson Sampson. Mr. Sampson attended Sumter public schools, graduating second in his high school class. In 1939, he graduated from Morehouse College, cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. In 1941, Mr. Sampson received a master’s degree in economics from Atlanta University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. After World War II, he attended Boston University School of Law, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1948 and his master’s degree in 1950. His career spanned more than 42 years as an educator and administrator at North Carolina Central University School of Law, serving as dean from 1965 to 1969. At the time of his final retirement in 1993, Mr. Sampson had taught more African-American lawyers than any other law professor in the eastern United States. Survivors include two sons, Attorney Thomas Gatewood Sampson and Attorney George Scott Sampson, both of Atlanta; two daughters, Dr. Gretchen Danise Sampson of Los Angeles, Calif., and Attorney Claretta Jane Varner of Detroit, Mich.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. GOSHEN, N.Y. — Harry Deal Bell, 82, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at his summer residence in Goshen. Born Wednesday, May 1, 1918, in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the late Harry Deal Bell Sr. and Wilhelmina Bultmann Ducker Bell. He was a self-employed party interior designer in New York and Palm Beach, Fla. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Memorial Garden at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Sumter. JOSEPH JOHNSON

LYNCHBURG — Joseph “Joe” Johnson, 67, husband of Betty Calcutt Johnson, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Robert Alfred Johnson and Florrie Timmons Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired farmer, a warden with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg include two sons, Neil Ryan Johnson of Lynchburg and Michael Johnson of Dunn, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Ellen Parker of Aynor and Ruby Garrett of Greenwood; a brother, Troy Johnson of Lynchburg; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta. Floyd Funeral Home in Olanta is in charge of arrangements.

LYNCHBURG — Robert “Big Bubba” McCray Sr., 91, widower of Licenia Thomas McCray, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000. Born Sept. 1, 1910, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Ealey and Mary Jane McCray. Mr. McCray attended Sumter public schools. He was a dedicated member of Mount Sinai AME Church for several years. He was a hardworking man in the agricultural field. Survivors include a son, Joseph McCray of New York; three daughters-in-law, Francis of New York, Emma Jean of Washington, D.C., and Mary of Georgia; eight sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law, Carnes and Laureen Duren, Icylee Felix, Mary Thomas, Louise McCray, Walter Thomas, Jeffrey Thomas and James Martin; 10 grandchildren, Michael, Steve (Connie), Leslie (Larry), Derrick, Martin, Marlin (Cheryl), Gregory, Shelia, Brian (Linda) and Randy (Sunday); and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four children, Isadore, Robert Jr., Walter and Mary Eliza; and a grandchild, Josett. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Sinai AME Church with the Rev. Alford Bradley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant AME Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 67 Lewis St., Lynchburg. LAKE CITY — Mary “Bee” Cooper, 88, widow of the Rev. Verdell Cooper, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Mose and Jennetta Wilson. Mrs. Cooper attended Williamsburg County public schools. Survivors include three sons, Tyrone Cooper of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Verdell Cooper Jr. and Emanuel Cooper, both of Lake City; two daughters, Lottie Graham of Roselle, N.J., and Verlie Epps of Scranton; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at John Tabernacle Holiness Church on Godwin Street with Elder Talbert Burgess, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in McKnight Cemetery. Ida Logan Nesbitt, 86, widow of James Purdy Nesbitt Sr., died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Matthew James Logan and Carrie Nesbitt Logan. Mrs. Nesbitt was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, James P. Nesbitt Jr. and his wife, Sharon Nesbitt, Brainard D. Nesbitt, and Charles R. Nesbitt and his wife, Carol Nesbitt; a daughter, Betty Nesbitt Shriver, all of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wells Cemetery with the Rev. Rodney Howard and the Rev. Steven Rohrlack officiating. Grandsons will be pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Nesbitt Jr., 207 S. Wise Drive. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
