NEW ZION — Margaret Lou Ellen Morris Nesbitt, 78, widow of William James Nesbitt, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at her home in Greenville. Born Aug. 12, 1922, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Levie James Morris and Carrie Anne Hagen Morris. Mrs. Nesbitt was a retired claims investigator for Blue Cross-Blue Shield in New York City and a member of Summerton Presbyterian Church. She attended Brookwood Community Church in Greenville. Survivors include two daughters, Janice Nesbitt and Carol Nesbitt Miner and husband, Jeffrey E. Miner, all of Greenville; two brothers, John Wilbur Morris and Julius Levie Morris of Sumter; a sister, Vivian Morris Lavender of Gordon, Ga.; a sister-in-law and dearest friend, Dorothy Hardy Morris of Sumter; and a devoted and “bestest” grandson, Spencer William Miner. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at New Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Murray Gibbons officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Phillip Morris, Jimmy Lavender, Charles Shugart, Jack Justin and Randy Massengale. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. LELA IANTHA REESE

Lela Iantha Reese, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Earle Reese and Dona Black Reese. Miss Reese was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Trinity Fellowship Sunday School Class and a lifetime member of United Methodist Women. She was a past member of the Sumter Pilot Club. She retired from Osteen Publishing Co. (Sumter Daily Item) after 47 years of service in the circulation department. Survivors include four brothers, Joseph Kenneth Reese, Travis Harold Reese and his wife, Carol Reese, all of Sumter, Richard B. Reese and his wife, Jackie Reese, of Greenwood, T. Edgar Reese and his wife, Barbara Reese, of Kiawah Island; three sisters, Rowena R. Pratt and Earlyne Reese, both of Charlotte, N.C., Rhidona R. Woodward and her husband, Perry Woodward, both of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Dr. James Adams officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews and great-nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Trinity Fellowship Sunday School Class, Ernie Carima and Dr. Philip Brandt. JAMES R. SCOTT

James Russell Scott died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Elizabeth, N.J. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Ben and Florence Myers Scott. Mr. Scott attended Lee County public schools and Claflin University in Orangeburg. He did further study at Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Ga., and Drew University in Madison, N.J. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. He was a painter at Burlington Industries in Bishopville, and he was owner of a trucking business in Roselle, N.J. He also worked as a salesman and support person for Sales Support Inc. in Edison, N.J. Mr. Scott was a member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church in Sumter, where he sang on the adult choir. After moving to Roselle, he joined Franklin St. John’s United Methodist Church in Newark, N.J., where he served as assistant minister, member of United Methodist Men, usher, Sunday school teacher, nurse aide, conference president of United Methodist Men and district level delegate of the United Methodist Church, which allowed him to travel extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Survivors include two brothers, Roosevelt Scott of Roselle and Edward Scott of Bishopville; and five sisters, Alice Prescott of Roselle, Creola S. Bowens, Bessie King and Donna Frierson, all of Sumter, and Lillie Mae Smalls of Bishopville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Scott. A wake service will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and James King, 13 Martin St. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Leroy Blanding Jr. died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Richland County. Born Oct. 25, 1975, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla., he was a son of Leroy Blanding Sr. and Hazel Robinson Blanding, and the stepson of Susan Lawson Blanding. The family will receive friends at the home of his paternal grandmother, Evangelist Mary Moses Blanding, Route 1, Box 890, Alderman Camp Road, in the Cypress Fork community of Alcolu. YORK — Mary Elizabeth Doster Jones of 3871 Allwood Road, 71, widow of Gene Walter Jones, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at home. Born June 30, 1929, in York County, she was a daughter of the late John Doster and Macey Martin Doster. Mrs. Jones was the mother of Macey Jean Shipton of Sumter. Mr. Cantey was retired from the city of Philadelphia, Pa. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Thomas K. Picknes; a daughter, Thomasina Guinyard; three sisters, Sophia English, Elenzer Spann and Rebecca Miller; nine stepchildren; three grandchildren; 17 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. BISHOPVILLE — Laura “Shully” Charles, wife of Thomas Charles, whom she married in 1937, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000. Mrs. Charles was a member of New Zion AME Church and Marshall Chapter OES No. 239. MANNING — Flagler Daney, widower of Carrie Mae Hilton Daney, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born May 29, 1912, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Walby L. Daney and Margaret Moses Daney. Mr. Daney attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Cypress Fork AME Church, where he served on the trustee board and as a class leader. He retired from Martin Construction. Survivors include five sons, Joe L. Daney and James Daney, both of Baltimore, Md., Christopher H. Daney of Manning and Glenwood Daney and Earl Daney, both of Alcolu; nine daughters, Lorye McCants of Manning, Mable Blackwell of Baltimore, Md., Sylvester Brown, Evelyn Davis and Eva Margaret Blackwell, all of Newport News, Va., Joann Daney and Priscilla Smalls, both of Atlanta, Ga., Gussie Scott of Green Bay, Wis., and Pearl Dixon of Philadelphia, Pa.; 30 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. Born in Dearing, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Robert Culpepper and Christine Dill Culpepper. Mrs. Blackwell was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife and mother. King Howell and Lydia Barnes Howell. Mrs. Lee was a retired seamstress and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Alcolu. Survivors include three sons, Reggie and Terry Lee, both of Alcolu, and Larry Lee of Manning; a daughter, Sherry Faye Coker of Alcolu; a brother, O.K. Howell of Wilson; two sisters, Adell Howell of Wilson and Eva Barrickman of Kenwick, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, O.C. Howell. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Seth Williams officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. Alex Qunicell Wells died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 4, 1982, in Sumter, he was a son of Alex Singletary and Sadie Burroughs. Mr. Wells attended Sumter District 17 and 2 schools and the Alternative School program. Survivors besides his father of Mayesville and his mother of Sumter include his stepfather, Alphonso Richardson of Sumter; two brothers, Eric Santell Wells of the home and Damon Wells of Mayesville; four sisters, Chrishaund Monikia Wells, Khadijah Jahdae, both of the home, Tammy Dickey of Pleasant Grove and Breana Wells of Mayesville; and his two grandmothers, Edna Singletary of Mayesville and Clarie Clark of Oswego. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Chapel Church, 710 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. officiating, assisted by Minister Terry Law. COLUMBIA — Moses Williams Sr., 74, husband of Emma Blanding Alston Williams, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center. Born Aug. 9, 1926, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Joe Wright and Mary Howard. He was adopted and reared by the late Brown Williams and Maggie Moody Williams. Mr. Williams attended Clarendon public schools. He joined the U.S. Army in August 1943, where he served for 26 years until he retired in June 1969. While on active duty, he received the following medals and awards: Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal Silver, one loop, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one OLC; Korean Service Medal with two BCS, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal with device 1960, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Aircraft Aviator Badge. He was a member of Willow Grove AME Church. Until his illness, he served as head steward and church treasurer, and he was the adviser of the building fund for many years. He also served as superintendent of the Lancaster District of the AME Church. Active in the community, he served on the board of Sumter County Branch of the NAACP, the Sumter School District 2 Board of Trustees, and the Wateree Community Action Corp. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Jimmy Williams of the Philippines, Moses Williams Jr. of Forestville, Md., Stanley Williams of St. Louis, Mo., and Maverick Williams of Dalzell; two daughters, Patricia Carolyn Williams of Suitland, Md., and Joyce Amiko Goodley of Columbia; three brothers, Preston Alston of Seat Pleasant, Md., Louis Alston of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Sammie Wright of Rembert; seven sisters, Thomasina Singleton of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Rose Alston of New Rochelle, Leola Harris of Philadelphia, Pa., Ola Mae Miller of Neptune, N.J., Mary Alice Williams of Horatio, Essie Mae Williams of Newark, N.J., and Emma Broger of Horatio; 24 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Frank Norman Williams. A wake service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the John W. Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at High Hill Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. E. Palmer, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Stanley Williams, John Platt Jr., David L. White, Willie Lawson and Vernon Dixon. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. FRIERSON WILSON

Frierson Wilson, husband of Gussie Aiken Wilson, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Sumter County. The family will receive friends at the home, 306 Dingle St. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

CORA K. ALSTON

BRONX, N.Y. — Cora Lee Keith Alston, widow of Emaziah “Buck” Alston Sr., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. Born Oct. 15, 1927, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Boston Keith and Almeta Keith. Mrs. Alston was a faithful member of Mt. Sinai Holy Temple, and then she moved her membership to Gospel Temple of Deliverance. She was a member of Mt. Sinai mass choir, Gospel Temple of Deliverance Choir and a member of the nursing committee until her health declined. Survivors include three sons, Robert Lee Alston and retired Tech. Sgt. Emaziah Alston Jr., both of Tacoma, Wash., and Cornell Alston of Sumter, S.C.; three daughters, Juanita Green, Patricia A. Marshall and Sandra Alston, all of Sumter; a brother, Boston Keith Jr. of Bronx; a sister, Ruth Ross of Bronx; 25 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Dorothy M. Alston Dennis and Almeta Alston Mahon; a great-grandson, Izekial Sieef Ahli Peterson; three brothers, Selmour Keith, David Keith and Willie Keith; two sisters, Sarah Miller and Evangelist Mary K. Pressley; a son-in-law, Michael Mahon; and two brothers-in-law, James Pressley and James Alston. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Holy Temple in Rembert, S.C., with Elder Clarence McCall, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Michael Pressley and Pastor Stanley E. Hayes Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Rembert. Trustees of the church will be pallbearers. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Patricia Marshall, 4283 Confederate Road, Sumter. The family will receive friends at the same home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

ELIZABETH S. AMICK

Elizabeth Smith Amick, 81, widow of Reynolds O’Neil Amick, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Stansil Smith and Edna Epperson Smith. Mrs. Amick was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church and a retired civil service traffic management employee at Shaw Air Force Base. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth “Betty” A. Hodges and Margaret “Peggy” A. Rolow, both of Sumter; three brothers, J. Hemby Smith of Columbia and William C. Smith and Robert H. Smith, both of Sumter; two sisters, Margaret S. Bishop of Columbia and Edna S. Roberts of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with Father Alistair McKay C.Ss.R. officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m., and at other times at the home of her daughter, Peggy Rolow, 2375 Wedgefield Road. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GLADYS CANTY

Gladys Canty died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 6, 1950, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Dan Ross and Lillie Williams Canty. She was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. She attended Sumter County public schools. Survivors include two brothers, William Canty and James Canty, both of Sumter; a sister, Olivia C. Johnson of Sumter; a stepbrother, Dee Marion Canty of Paxville; and two stepsisters, Wilma Clark and Susie McSingleton, both of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton officiating, assisted by the Rev. Larry C. Weston, pastor of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. Mark Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Emma M. Johnson, 12 Copeland St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MAY C. CARTER

RALEIGH, N.C. — May Ann Caldwell Carter, wife of Ben K. Carter Jr., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Wake Medical Center. Born May 9, 1966, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Mary A. Caldwell and the late Crosby Caldwell. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Mt. Moriah UME Church in Alcolu. Later, she attended Baptist Grove Church in Raleigh. She was a 1984 graduate of Mayewood High School and a 1991 graduate of Texas College. While attending school in Texas, she majored in computer science with a minor in mathematics. In 1987, she was first runner-up to Miss Texas College. She was the recipient of many awards and certificates. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and many other organizations. She was recently employed as a telecommunications engineer at Nortel Networks in Raleigh. Survivors besides her husband and her mother include a son, Benjamin K. Carter III of the home; four brothers, Willie, Ollie and Elijah Jackson, all of Sumter, and Alfonzo Caldwell of Raleigh; and three sisters, Pauline McFadden, Sarah Williams and Willisten McKnight, all of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Caldwell; and two sisters, Ida Wilkins and Eleanor Montgomery. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Baptist Grove Church, 7109 Leesville Road, Raleigh, with the Rev. Paul Anderson officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Willisten and Raymond McKnight, 281 E. Red Bay Road, Sumter, S.C. Lea Funeral Home, 2500 Poole Road, P.O.
