NECEN DINKINS

Necen Dinkins, 55, husband of Sylvia Dinkins, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 18, 1946, in Sumter County, he was a son of Katie Holloman Dinkins and the late Joseph Dinkins. Mr. Dinkins attended Sumter County public schools. In his youth, he moved to New York, and he later relocated to Miami, Fla. Survivors besides his wife and his mother include two sons, Cassim Jackson of Pasadena, Calif., and Necen Dinkins Jr. of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Felicia McCullough and Sharyl Bynum, both of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, Albert Dinkins and Richmond Dinkins, both of Rembert; five sisters, Sally Sanders, Louise Kirkland, Katie Grant and Alta Mae Kirkland, all of Rembert, and Juanita Corners of Bronx, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Dr. C.H. Davis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of his mother, 5540 Stage Coach Road, Rembert. The family will receive friends at the same home. VIRGINIA K. GERALD

Virginia Kundle Gerald, wife of Walter L. Gerald, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at her home. Born March 20, 1925, in Bisbee, Ariz., she was a daughter of the late Vincent and Lois Kundle. Mrs. Gerald was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and Aldersgate Women’s Circle Club. She retired from Sumter School District 17. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two sons, Walter Canady Gerald of Taylors and James Boyd Gerald of Columbia; a sister, Aileen Hartman of Dunwoody, Ga.; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Louis Jamison officiating. The family will receive friends at the home, 11 Lenoir St. Memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Kitchen Improvement Fund, 211 Alice Drive, Sumter, SC 29150. LILA JORDAN

OLANTA — Lila Jordan, 90, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born May 14, 1910, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Adolphus Player Mims and Sara Jane McElveen Mims. Mrs. Jordan was a homemaker. She was a member of Nazareth United Methodist Church, the Ladies Bible Class and the church choir. She was also a member of the Gardenia Garden Club. She was first married to the late J. Carl Jordan for 57 years, and then to Thomas Pritchard of Olanta. Survivors besides her husband of Olanta include a son, Ronald M. Jordan and his wife, Arnette, of Columbia; and a grandson, Jeffrey C. Jordan of Greer. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Nazareth United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Nazareth United Methodist Church. BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Frances Singleton, 48, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. Born Feb. 1, 1952, in Summerton, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Elder Cyrus and Azaledd Robinson Singleton. Survivors include her husband, Herbie Green, of Barnwell, N.C.; two daughters, Monique Green of Brooklyn and Itasha Green of the home; four brothers, John L. Singleton of Queens, N.Y., Marshall Singleton of Brooklyn, Leon Singleton of Springfield Garden, N.Y., and Hezekiah Bannister of Rock Point, N.C.; and three sisters, Shirley Ragin of Summerton, S.C., and Faye Singleton and Eva Mae Stukes, both of Brooklyn. Esther Muldrow Wilson, wife of Paul Wilson, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born May 25, 1925, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Alma Kelly Muldrow. Mrs. Wilson attended Sumter County public schools. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she served on the gospel choir for many years. She later joined Greater St. Paul Non-Denominational Church, where she was a member until her health failed. Survivors besides her husband include six sons, Robert Lee, Sammie Lee, Dennis and Thomas Wilson, all of Sumter, Harvey Lee McFadden of New Jersey and James Wilson of Charlotte, N.C.; six daughters, Pearl Richardson, Louise Wilson, Ruby Dukes, Ola Belle Richardson, Linda Jenning and Marie Wilson, all of Sumter; two brothers, David and Joe Muldrow, both of Sumter; four sisters, Arabelle Johnson, Willemina Player, Mary Smith and Elizabeth McGee, all of Sumter; 34 grandchildren, six of whom she reared, Denise Richardson Watson, Cynthia Richardson, Evangeline Wilson Holmes, Recardo Richardson and Tracy Wilson, all of Sumter, and Archie Wilson of Columbia; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children; two brothers, Jeremiah Muldrow and Tommy Muldrow; and a sister, Carolia Hickmon. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. L.W. Barnes officiating, assisted by the Rev. Stanley Hayes, Minister E. AUGUSTA, Ga. — Martha Ramsey Wright, wife of Stanley Wright, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Augusta. Born Nov. 29, 1962, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of Murkle Ramsey and the late Elease Sumter Ramsey and the biological daughter of James Hudo and Sarah Carter. She attended Sumter County public schools and was a 1981 graduate of Sumter High School, Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter and Tidewater Community College in Virginia. In her youth, she joined Second Presbyterian Church in Sumter. She was employed with Naval Base Exchange as a retail supervisor for years. Survivors besides her husband of Virginia Beach, Va., include two daughters, Marcella Wright and Shanti Wright, both of the home in Virginia Beach; three brothers, Eric Hudo of Detroit, Mich., and Teddy Carter and Corey Carter, both of Seattle, Wash.; and two sisters, Wanda Davis of Columbia and Shirul Hudo of Birmingham, Ala. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Anntanetta “Baby Ruth” Wright. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church in Sumter, S.C., with the Rev. Dr. R.E. AUGUSTA, Ga. — Ruth Anntanetta “Baby Ruth” Wright died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000. Born Nov. 25, 1933, in Charleston, S.C., she was a daughter of Stanley Wright and the late Martha Ramsey Wright. Ruth was a first-grader at Newtown Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Va., where she achieved excellence in her work. She attended the area churches in Virginia Beach and also attended New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, S.C. Survivors besides her father include two sisters, Marcella and Shanti Wright, both of the home in Virginia Beach; her paternal grandparents, Charlie and Ruth Devoe Wright of Sumter; her maternal grandparents, Murkle Ramsey of Sumter, and James Hudo and Sarah Carter, both of Seattle, Wash., and her paternal great-grandmother, Sarah Davis of Manhattan, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. R.E. Bligen officiating, assisted by the Rev. Emma Thompson and the Rev. Willie Wright. DALZELL — Moses Williams Sr., 74, husband of Emma Blanding Williams, died today, Aug. 17, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born Aug. 9, 1926, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Brown Williams and Mary Alston. The family will receive friends at the home of his wife, 6430 Fish Road, Dalzell. REV. HAROLD AKERS

SUMMERTON — The Rev. Harold Akers, husband of Julia Mattie Hagerman Akers, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at his home in Summerton. Born May 5, 1924, in Honaker, Va., he was a son of the late John Henry Akers and Elizabeth Marie Honaker Akers. He retired after 32 years as a coal miner with Mateland Coal Co., was pastor for 18 years of Roderfield Community Church in West Virginia. and was a member of the UMWA. Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include five sons, Johnny and wife Josie Akers and William and wife Drema Akers, both of Raysal, W.Va., Harold Douglas and wife April Akers of Chicago, Ill., Jerry and wife Julie Akers of Wyoming, N.Y., and Raymond Akers of the home; eight daughters, Lana and husband Larry Lambert of Lancaster, Loretta and husband Valentia Duncan of Bluefield, W.Va., Diana and husband Carl Chaffins of Jolo, W.Va., Brenda Hagerman of Raysal, Carol and husband Brian Stimson of Buckhannon, W.Va., Elsie Akers of Summerton, Verdie and husband Mickey Walker of Hanover, W.Va., and Diedra and husband Denny Steele of Summerton; 32 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruby Ellen King; and a granddaughter, Julia Jean King. SAVANNAH, Ga. — Inez Bateman, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000. Born in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Council McLeod and Hattie Compton McLeod. She had lived in Savannah for the past 18 years and was a homemaker. Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Bateman, Mary Willoughby and Betty Craven, all of Savannah; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Fox & Weeks, Drayton chapel, with the Rev. Michael Owens officiating. Burial was at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery in Sumter. Fox & Weeks, Drayton chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

ALICE AVIN BUGLER

FLORENCE — Alice Avin Bugler, 76, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born June 14, 1924, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Ruth Griffin Avin. Mrs. Bugler was retired from Ford Motor Co. as a production systems analyst. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Florence and was a volunteer at McLeod Regional Medical Center. She is survived by three brothers, Lynwood Avin of Columbia, and Griffin Avin and Oscar Avin, both of Sumter; three sisters, Christine Corbett of Camden, Carolyn Scurry of Florence and Jeanette Rosenbaum of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and a special friend, Julie Gyorki of Florence. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Bugler. A funeral mass was held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Interment was in Florence National Cemetery. ELECT LADY LEILA M. BENNETT

Elect Lady Leila Margaret DesChamps Bennett died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Gussie Cochran. She was reared in Manning and attended Clarendon County public schools. Mrs. Bennett joined New Hope UME Church, and being led by the Holy Spirit, she left New Hope and joined Fire Baptized Holiness Church. There she was under the leadership of Bishop Fuller, where she was appointed to pastor Fire Baptized Holiness Church of Pinewood, James Chapel of Summerton and Macedonia Fire Baptized Holiness Church of Silver. In 1968, she joined the House of God, which is a church of the living God, under the leadership of the late Bishop Junior M. Early, and was appointed to the House of God No. 1 in Lake City. She was later appointed to presiding elder of the House of God, State of South Carolina. During her tenure as a presiding elder, she continued with her mission work at the now defunct St. Charles Church. After the death of Bishop John Bennett, she was appointed interim pastor and later pastor of Mt. Calvary Holiness Church of North Santee. She was a steadfast pastor until her health failed, which caused her to resign from pastoring, and she joined the House of God Church in Manning, where she was appointed as elect lady in the church and also served as mother of the church and was member of the pastor’s aide club. She was first married to the late Louis Des-Champs, and then to the late Bishop John A. Bennett. Survivors include seven sons, George Des-Champs of Wilmington, N.C., Louis DesChamps Jr. and Julius DesChamps, both of Pinewood, Willie Huggins of Philadelphia, Pa., Ashton Bennett of Jersey City, N.J., Willie Bennett of Summerton and Keith Bennett of Hampton; 11 daughters, Janet Rhames of Brooklyn, N.Y., Connie Smiling of Pinewood, Lanell DesChamps of Manning, Linda DesChamps Palmer and Viola Greer, both of Cayce, Evangelist Henrietta Gordon of Estill, Gwendolyn Garvin of Fayetteville, N.C., Dorothy White, Geraldine Bennett and Barbara Bennett, all of North Santee, and Vandria Bennett of Orangeburg; three sisters, Pastor Emma Cummings of Baltimore, Md., Geraldine June of Manhattan, N.Y., and Margie Holliday of Clinton, N.C.; 51 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Mackie Ross DesChamps and Jureal Thomas Bennett. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope UME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Leroy T. James, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Q.B. Conyers, Bishop Amos Major, Evangelist Cammie Green, Evangelist Maebell Graham, Elder Hawley Robinson, Elect Lady Eleanor Stukes and the Rev. Annie Lou Riley, delivering the words of comfort. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Community Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her daughter, Linda DesChamps Palmer, 1526 Northland Drive, Cayce, and at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Connie Smiling and Harry Smiling, 6915 Panola Road, Pinewood. SMITHFIELD, N.C. — John W. Rouse died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Johnson Medical Hospital. Born in Lee County, S.C., he was a son of Mary P. Rouse and the late West Rouse. Mr. Rouse attended Lee County public schools. In his youth, he joined Unionville AME Church. Survivors besides his mother of Sumter, S.C., include a son, Sammie Lee Rouse of Sumter; a brother, Ervin Rouse of Philadelphia, Pa.; and five sisters, Rosa Belle Coakley and Sue Mae Wells, both of Mayesville, and Sarah Peterson, Janie Wheeler and Charlotte Dinkins, all of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Matthew Isaac and the Rev. Joshua Dupree. Burial will be in Unionville AME Church cemetery. Gladys Canty died today, Aug. 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 6, 1950, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Dan Ross and Lillie Williams Canty. Nancy Burchell Richardson Deas, 100, widow of Thomas E. Deas Sr., died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James Burchell Richardson and Mary Spencer Richardson. Mrs. Deas was one of the oldest members of Grace Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Alex Burchell Deas and his wife, Virginia Deas, of Sumter; two daughters, Nancy Player and her husband, O.V. Player, of Sumter and Emily Deas Rhoden of Columbia; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Deas Jr. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. James Chandler and Dr. Thomas Painter officiating. CHARLESTON — Javaris Hakeem Dow died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital. Born July 18, 1988, in Sumter, he was a son of Arnold Lee Brailsford and Sherie Lynn Dow. His relationship with Christ was affirmed with the holy baptism. Survivors besides his parents, Arnold Lee Brailsford and Sandra Brailsford of Sumter and Sherie Lynn Dow and Keith Ryans of Augusta, Ga., include three brothers, Brandon Dow of Washington, D.C., and Carlos Dow and Anthony Robinson, both of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Yakiyah L. Blackwell of Sumter; his grandparents, Lewis and Dorothy Dow Robinson of Pinewood and Thornie and Dorothy Boston Brailsford of Pinewood; and his great-grandmother, Evelyn Robinson of Pinewood. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Enon Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Stanley E. Hayes Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.W. Chandler, the Rev. W. Wright and the Rev. Lee Ernest Burgess. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park in Sumter. Members of the Augusta Youth Center will be pallbearers. The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of his grandmother, Dorothy Robinson, 18 Ball Park Road, Pinewood. The family will receive friends at the same home and also at 16 Mitchell St., Sumter. Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

DEWEY L. NEAL SR.

Dewey Levan Neal Sr., husband of Naomi Adger Neal, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 22, 1919, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joshua Neal Sr. and Jimmie Lee Warley Neal. Mr. Neal attended the public schools in the Tindal community. He was a lifelong member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served in the following capacities: trustee, assistant clerk, Sunday school treasurer for 40 years, member of the gospel choir, the male chorus and a deacon. He was also a member of Corinthian Lodge 200. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Dewey Neal Jr. and Kenneth Neal, both of Sumter; a foster son, Charles Evans of Sumter; a foster daughter, Rovenia Parker of Pinewood; two brothers, Joshua Neal of Sumter and Albert Neal of Long Island, N.Y.; a foster brother, Isiah Leneau of Baltimore, Md.; five adopted sisters, Lena Rice of Brooklyn, N.Y., Edna Newton of Baltimore, Jimmie Lee Osborne of Greenbelt, Md., Gladys Miott of Hampton, Va., and Martha Cureton of Sumter; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, U.S. 15 South, with the Rev. Willie A. Wright Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Vernon Spencer, the Rev. M.L. Duncan, the Rev. J.C. Moore, Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. and the Rev. John G. Ragin. Burial will be in Neal Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Thursday. The family will receive friends at the home, 4660 U.S. 15 South. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

NORTH CHARLESTON — Retired Tech. Sgt. Rolan Scanlon Morel, husband of Marva Lee Kamper Morel, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in a hospital in Charleston. Born in East Port, Fla., he was a son of the late Robert Murel and Addy Ruth Johnson Morel. Mr. Morel was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served for more than 20 years. He was a Protestant. Survivors besides his wife of North Charleston include a stepson, Joe Melton of Lexington; four brothers, Baker Morel and Nolan Morel, both of North Charleston, George Morrell of Augusta, Ga., and Robert E. Johnson of Columbia; two sisters, Mollie Jackson of Columbia and Julia Spikes of Pearson, Ga. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Morel, formerly of Sumter; and a sister, Laura Belle Gunn, formerly of Long Beach, Calif. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., North Area Chapel, 2119 Dorchester Road. Burial will be in Plantation Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. J. COLUMBIA — Marie Abigail Owens Wheeler, widow of James Marion Wheeler, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center. Born July 30, 1924, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Eugene D. “Pop” and Hattie Hussell Owens. Mrs. Wheeler was a 1941 graduate of Edmunds High School and attended Furman University. She was the owner and operator of The Letter Shop in Sumter from 1953-1968. She was a charter member of Sumter Business and Professional Women’s Club, former member of Grace Baptist Church and a member of Trenholm Road Baptist Church. Her first love after family and work was knitting sweaters for family and friends. Her second love and enjoyment was following the Sumter American Legion P-15’s baseball team. Survivors include three daughters, Gail Wheeler Jones and her husband, Robert, of Sumter, Barbara Wheeler Walker and her husband, Richard, of Columbia, and Patricia Madray and husband, Billy, of Sumter; two grandsons, Rob Jones of Sumter and Jamie Walker of Rock Hill; two granddaughters, Abby Tisdale of Kingstree and Sunny Walker of Florence; two brothers, Thomas Atkinson of Sumter and Eugene Owens of Myrtle Beach; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home in Sumter with the Rev. Roger E. Orman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home in Sumter. Bullock Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

BRONX, N.Y. — Cora Lee Keith Alston, widow of Emaziah Alston, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.
