WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Patricia A. Heath, 46, wife of Barry A. Heath, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Warner Robins. Born June 18, 1954, in Lakenheath, England, she was a daughter of J.K. and V.J. Goldman. Mrs. Heath was a retired para-professional at Westside Elementary School. She was a Protestant. Survivors besides her husband of Warner Robins and her parents of Lakenheath include a son, Mathew Heath of Warner Robins; three daughters, Melissa Heath Cox, Corey Heath and Stephanie Heath, all of Warner Robins; a brother, Guy Goldman of Hampton, Va.; a sister, Sara Goldman of Alexandria, Va.; and a grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at McCullough Funeral Home, 417 S. Houston Lake Road, Warner Robins, with the Rev. David Miller officiating. Burial will be private. CLYDE F. McLEOD

Retired Maj. Clyde F. McLeod died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 18, 1935, in Biscoe, N.C., he was a son of the late Walter and Beulah Jackson McLeod. He was a retired major in the U.S. Air Force, a graduate of St. Leo’s College and a member of Hillcrest Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his companion, Michelle Dick; two sons, Mark McLeod of Ardmore, Okla., and Bruce McLeod of Florence; a daughter, Lori McLeod Queen of Kernersville, N.C.; six brothers, Claude McLeod of Troy, N.C., Charles McLeod of Wichita, Kan., Paul McLeod of Star, N.C., David McLeod of Robbins, N.C., and Donald McLeod and Wilbur McLeod, both of Biscoe; a sister, Jean McLeod Drye of Biscoe; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home. Burial will be in Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association of South Carolina. Mary Elma Brunson Stafford, 83, widow of William Archie Stafford Sr., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Lexington Medical Center in Lexington. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Jack Brunson and Loretta Baker Hodge Brunson. Mrs. Stafford was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was very active as a former Sunday school teacher and member of the Ladies Circle. Survivors include a son, William A. Stafford Jr. of Spartanburg; three daughters, Sylvia Stafford Therrell of Columbia, Loretta Stafford Stokes of Sumter and Teresa “Terri” Stafford Stokes of Beaufort; three brothers, Jack Wade Brunson Sr. of Cleveland, S.C., Robert M. Brunson of Salisbury, N.C., and Charles F. “Mickey” Brunson of Bradenton, Fla.; five sisters, Frances H. Denton of Camden, Harriett B. Bruce of Raleigh, N.C., Sarah B. Zemp of Hartsville, Emma B. Marshall of Columbia and Jacqueline “Jackie” G. Partin of Greenville; eight grandchildren, Shelia Therrell Steptoe, Sharon Therrell Haddock, Bobby A. “Chip” Stokes Jr., James D. “Danny” Stokes, William H. “Will” Stokes, David H. Stafford, William Brunson Stafford and Brandon R. Stokes; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ed McLeod officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. MARGAREE H. YORK

MANNING — Margaree Holliday York, 47, wife of Willie York, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Sept. 4, 1952, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Willie Jones and the late Comilla James Dow and the adopted daughter of the late Deacon Charlton Holliday and Tamara Jackson “Miss Shuggie” Holliday. Deacon Isaac and Mary Bosier were also wonderful parents to her. Mrs. York grew up in Clarendon County. She attended Manchester High School, where she graduated in the Class of 1970. She accepted Christ in her youth and became a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver, where she was a member of the mass choir, young adult choir and the missionary society. She also served as church clerk and junior missionary society president for many years. She served as chairperson of both the program committee and the church anniversary committee, a member of the Vacation Bible School committee and as an usher board president. She was also an active worker with the Clarendon County Voter Registration Board and clerk of the Greater Friendly Union Young People Alliance and many other boards. She was employed by Clarendon School District 2 as a bus driver for many years until her health failed. Survivors besides her husband and her father of Jamaica, N.Y., include two sons, Lorenzo Holliday of Rock Hill and Robert Tyrell York of the home; two daughters, Shareka York and Katrice York, both of the home; two brothers, Henry James of Philadelphia, Pa., and Jacob Dow Jr. of Thomasville, N.C.; five sisters, Bessie Canty of Sumter, Dorothy Robinson of Pinewood, Jennie Jones of Jamaica, N.Y., and Diana Rogers and Joann Ozell Dow, both of Thomasville; and a grandchild. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Levie Dow, Charlton Holliday and Edward Holliday; and four sisters, Susan Parker, Jannie Jackson, Pearl Brandon and Alberta Dow. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Silver with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. J.H. Pringle, C. Richburg, Johnus Matthews and O’Donald Dingle. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 311 Canal St., Manning. RALEIGH, N.C. — Mae Ann Caldwell Carter, wife of Benjamin K. Carter, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Wake Medical Center. Born May 9, 1966, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Mary Caldwell and the late Crosby Caldwell. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Willisten Caldwell McKnight and Raymond McKnight, 218 E. Red Bay Road, Sumter, S.C. Dewey Levan Neal, husband of Naomi Adger Neal, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 22, 1919, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joshua and Jimmie Lee Warley Neal. The family will receive friends at the home of his wife, 4660 U.S. 15 South. DR. CORNELIUS B. BURNS

Cornelius Benton Burns, M.D., 89, husband of 54 years to Margaret Roper Burns, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born in Camden, he was a son of the late James Hall Burns and Henrietta Brailsford Burns. Dr. Burns was a graduate of Camden High School; Sewanee, The University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.; and the Medical University of South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army as a Medical Corp captain with an anti-aircraft unit for the Fifth Army Division in England, North Africa and Italy for five years. He did his medical internship and residency in pediatrics at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La. He practiced medicine in Orangeburg for two years and in Columbia for one year before setting up his practice in Sumter in 1949. In mid-career, he served as a volunteer for the American Medical Association in Vietnam at Natrang Hospital as a pediatrician in 1968. In 1981, he was one of the Medical Association’s ambassadors to the Republic of China to exchange concepts of medical practice while visiting hospitals and communes. He served as past president of Sumter, Clarendon and Lee Medical Society, past president of the S.C. Pediatric Association and a member of the Golden Grads Association of the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Burns was selected as Wateree District Voluntary Physician of the Year in 1991 for faithful and unselfish service to medically indigent patients in Clarendon County and Wateree District for more than 25 years. He saw all the infants delivered by granny midwives during those days, as well as all medical problems identified by nurses through the child health clinics and signed most referrals to the Crippled Children’s Program. For many decades he was the physician in charge of Burnt Gin and Mill Creek summer camps. He was dedicated to helping the less fortunate and was known to put a sick child in his car and then transport the child and their family to Charleston. He retired from his private practice in 1989 and did not raise his fees from the beginning of his practice to the end. Dr. Burns was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, where he served on the Vestry and as a Lay Reader, in addition to being a member of the Board of Directors for the Episcopal Home for Children in York. He was chaplain’s assistant at Tuomey Regional Medical Center and a court-appointed advocate for the Guardian ad Litem project for abused children. He was made honorary Kentucky colonel on Sept. 18, 1983. Social memberships included the Historical Societies of Sumter County and South Carolina, the Fortnightly Club and Cotillion Club. He was an avid tennis player and won many trophies and the S.C. Doubles Hardcourt for players over 75 years old. Fishing and boating were also his hobbies. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Cornelius “Neil” Benton Burns Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Henrietta “Henri” Burns Wade and husband, Robert, of Aiken, Margaret “Sue” Burns Smoak and husband, John, of Charleston and Cornelia “Tootie” Burns Adams and husband, Jim, of Sumter; a brother, Moultrie Brailsford Burns Sr. of Columbia; and five grandchildren, Ellen Wade, Benton Wade, John Smoak, Baxter Smoak and David Adams. He was preceded in death by a brother, Julian Hall Burns. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter on Main and Calhoun streets in Sumter. Officiating will be the Rev. John Barr and the Rev. Mark Riggs. Burial will be in the Quaker Cemetery in Camden. Pallbearers will be Moultrie Burns Jr., James Burns, John Burns, Maj. Gen. Julian Burns, John Smoak III and Benton Wade. MARY A. McELVEEN

BISHOPVILLE — Mary Sue Amerson McElveen, 95, widow of Thomas Wilson McElveen, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at a local nursing facility. Born in the Concord community of Sumter County, she was the last surviving child of the late John Frierson Amerson and Susan Bradley Amerson. Mrs. McElveen was the oldest member of Elliott Baptist Church and was a devoted mother and homemaker. Survivors include two sons, C. Wayne McElveen of Greensboro, N.C., and T.W. McElveen of Mayesville; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Elizabeth McElveen, Julie Caroline McPeak and Lisa Ramsey. She was preceded in death by nine brothers, Robert Bradley Amerson, Furman Amerson, Neil Amerson, William Thomas Amerson, Walter Amerson, Wilson Lever Amerson, Clifton Amerson, Wade Milton Amerson and Charlie Amerson; and by five sisters, Bannie Elizabeth Atkinson, Katie Lou Atkinson, Hettie Belle Brown, Alene Amerson and Florence Windham. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Griggs officiating. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery. JAMES E. PLOWDEN SR.

James Edward Plowden Sr. died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Sumter. Born Nov. 28, 1933, in Bishopville, he was a son of Bessie Brailford. Mr. Plowden attended Sumter County public schools. He retired as a staff sergeant in 1972 from the U.S. Army with 20 years of service. He was born again into the Church of Christ in 1981 and was baptized there. Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include his wife, Annie S. Plowden of Myrtle Beach; a son, the Rev. Everett S. Plowden of Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Vanessa D. Plowden of Myrtle Beach; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James E. Plowden Jr.; a sister, Janice B. Murray; and a grandmother, Ella Plowden. Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday in the chapel of James Funeral Home with Brother Silas Prescott officiating. Burial will be in Florence National Cemetery. GABLE — Jack Rose Sr., 57, husband of Carolyn McKenzie Rose, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Dec. 15, 1942, in Gable, he was a son of the late Paul Spann and Minnie Rose. Mr. Rose attended Melina Parochial School and Walker-Gamble School in New Zion. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his savior and joined First Baptist Church in Sardinia. Mr. Rose was employed as a machine operator for Cherokee Construction Co. in Columbia and retired from Dalton Construction Inc. in Bennettsville. He also was a member of King Joseph Lodge No. 45. Survivors besides his wife of the home include four sons, Jack Rose Jr. of Manhattan, N.Y., Johnnie McKenzie of the home, Levern Abraham of Alcolu and Ervin McKenzie of Lake City; two daughters, Rosa McKenzie and Dennette Rose, both of Manhattan; a grandson he reared as his own, Christopher Rose of Manhattan; a sister, Polly Davis of Boston, Mass.; and 11 additional grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Melina Presbyterian Church USA in Gable with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. BISHOPVILLE — David L. Simon died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville. He was born June 8, 1959, in Lee County. VIOLET A. KLEINERT

Violet Azalea Kleinert, 91, widow of Fred Lawrence Kleinert, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Goldsboro, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Daisy Cobb Hester. Mrs. Kleinert was a member of New Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church in Newport News, Va., and was attending the Living Word Outreach Ministries of Sumter. She owned and operated a boarding house in Newport News and touched many lives with her good food and good news of Jesus Christ. Survivors include four daughters, Hilda Lois Horrell, Margie Ellen Williams and Ruby Annette Weir, all of Newport News, and Carolyn K. Castleberry of Sumter; two brothers, Wildon Hester and David Hester, both of Wilson, N.C.; two sisters, Ella Bunn of Wilson and Edna Weaver of Roanoke, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Percy and Harold Hester; and three sisters, Daisy Barns, Jessie McGimsey and Marie Watkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News with the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Cemetery in Newport News. Grandsons will be pallbearers. The family will receive friends immediately following the burial. INFANT IZEKIAL PETERSON

Izekial Sieef Ahli Peterson died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 3, 2000, in Sumter, he was the infant son of Isaac Peterson Jr. and Lakeisha Rene Green. Survivors besides his parents include three brothers, Devante Green, Coodarion Peterson and Isazavion Peterson, all of Sumter; a sister, Rodeshia Green of Sumter; his maternal grandparents, Rudolph Green and Juanita Green of Sumter; his paternal grandparents, Isaac Peterson Sr. and Henrietta McBride, both of Sumter; his paternal great-grandmother, Catherine McBride of Sumter; and his maternal great-grandmother, Vertelle Green of Sumter. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Billie Cemetery/Congruity Presbyterian Church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 10:25 a.m. from the home, 47 Murphy St. The family will receive friends at the home. Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

OGLE STEVENS

Ogle Stevens, 78, widower of Karoline Stevens, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born in Marion, N.C., he was a son of the late Francis and Fannie Early Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a retired staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, was a radio operator and was with the invasion forces on D-Day in Normandy. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Spires of Florida; a brother, Charles L. Stevens of Charlotte, N.C.; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kipling Stevens; and a sister, Shalotte Morgan. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sumter Cemetery. Bullock Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

BENJAMIN A. SWINTON

Benjamin Anthony Swinton died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 3, 1955, in Sumter, he was a son of Benjamin and Dollie Swinton. Mr. Swinton attended Sumter County public schools. During his junior year at Sumter High School, a promising athletic career was ended prematurely by an untimely football injury, resulting in his limited mobility and an astounding courage that he generously instilled in others. Through his faith and perseverance, he continued his education, graduating in June 1974. He attended Salem Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Salem Baptist Church Choir. He later became a member of Walker Avenue Church of God, where he served as a Bible school youth teacher. He lived a full and active life and was an inspiration to his family and friends. Survivors besides his parents of Sumter include a sister, Juanita Williams of Sumter; nieces and nephews, Angela, Brian, Janya and Christopher; a god-child, Kiesha Gibbs; five god-sisters, Tosha, Frances, Murlene, Antwaun and Antiqua; 11 uncles and 16 aunts. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Salem Baptist Church, Fulton Street, with Dr. T.O. Everette, pastor, the Rev. Bobby Damon, delivering words of comfort, the Rev. D.L. Grant, presiding, assisted by the Rev. David Quick and Dr. James Blassingame. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. for final viewing until the hour of service. The family will receive friends at the home, 913 W. Dr. Henry Everett Hardin, 87, husband of Carrie Wallace Hardin, died today, Aug. 9, 2000, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Dr. Hardin was born Oct. 18, 1912, in St. Matthews. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

Henry Lewis, 92, husband of Josephine Lincoln Lewis, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home. Born June 12, 1908, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Hardem and Margret Rembert Lewis. The family will receive friends at the home, 3340 Hill Road. Services will be announced by James Funeral Home Inc.

ANNIE C. MOORE

Annie Clark Moore, 84, widow of Clarence Moore, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 10, 1916, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late James and Hummie Gordon Clark. Mrs. Moore lived in Baltimore, Md., for many years. When she returned to South Carolina, she joined St. Peter AME Church in Rimini, where she was a very faithful member. Survivors include a devoted nephew and niece with whom she lived, Willie Lee and Carrie Gaymon Green of Sumter; seven nieces, Martha Hood and Annie Bell Moore, both of Baltimore, Md., Susan Jackson of Whitesville, N.C., Shirley Ford of Paterson, N.J., Rosa Conyers of Rimini, Julia Clark of Sumter and Martha Ragin of Pinewood; 37 grandnieces and grandnephews; and 80 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Morris Clark; three sisters, Lorraine Mack, Willene Ragin and Mattie Clark; five nephews, Ike Clark, Richard Clark, James Clark, Rufus Conyers and John Ragin; a niece, Susan Ragin Green; and a grandnephew, Aaron Green. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Orlando McCauley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Silas Spann, Willie Green Jr. and Roosevelt Boyd. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of her nephew and his wife, Willie and Carrie Gaymon Green, 46 Lincoln Ave., Sumter. Dyson’s Home for Funerals in Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

WADE B. PADGETT

MANNING — Wade Boyd Padgett, 53, husband of Beverly Geddings Padgett, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 18, 1947, in Rock Hill, he was a son of Eliza Sanders Padgett Smith and the late L.B. Padgett. Mr. Padgett attended Baptist College. He was employed by Carolina Golden in Sumter. He was a Vietnam War U.S. Army veteran and a member of Home Branch Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning and his mother of Ridge Spring include two sons, Wade Boyd Padgett Jr. and Marshall Brent Padgett, both of Manning; two granddaughters, Lacey Nicole Padgett and April Jewell Padgett, both of Manning; and a special niece, Dwan Beach of North Charleston. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Home Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. John V. Hall and the Rev. Richard Hudson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sammie Jackson, Worth Geddings, Linwood Geddings, Cecil Hodge Jr., McDowell Geddings and Robert Andrews. Cousins will be honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mamie Geddings, Route 1, Box 788, Manning. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

OLIVER PARKER

REMBERT — Oliver “O.P.” Parker, 73, husband of Alice O. Parker, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2000. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Jake and Ella Dixon Parker. Mr. Parker was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and an usher. He was a World War II and Korean War U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from DuPont after 34 years. Survivors besides his wife of Rembert include two sons, Robert Oliver Parker and his wife, Elouise, of Camden, and John Parker and his wife, Elizabeth, of Rembert; a sister, Alice Hazel Jowers of Charleston; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. George E. Collins Funeral Home Inc. in Camden is in charge of arrangements.

EDNA W. VALLETTA

Edna Willard Valletta, 84, widow of Anthony Valletta, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in the Inter Medical unit at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. Born Sept. 2, 1915, in Bryson City, N.C., she was a daughter of the late William and Matty McDonald. Mrs. Valletta was a retired supervisor for the railroad in Washington, D.C., with 24 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a son, Coley L. Willard and his wife, Barbara, of Sumter; a brother, Ed McDonald of Forestville, Md.; and three grandchildren, Robert R. Willard, Denese Lamar and Cynthia Willard. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor Cheek officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service, and at other times at the son’s home on Meadow Drive. ANNIE E. WARE

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Annie English Ware, 93, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Woodhull Hospital. Born Jan. 3, 1907, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Anderson and Mary Ellen Anderson. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she found Christ as her personal savior and joined Mt. Olive AME Church in Sumter. Survivors include a son, James English of Brooklyn; a daughter, Catherine Felder of Sumter; a brother, Henry Anderson of Sumter; a sister, Effie Beal of Florida; five grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 4, at Armstrong Funeral Home Inc. in Brooklyn with Minister Willie J. Armstrong Jr. officiating. EMMA J. WILLIAMS

Emma James Williams died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 1, 1955, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Williams and Bernice Pearson Williams. She attended Sumter County public schools. She attended an area church in her youth. Survivors include two sons, Steve Williams and Roosevelt Williams, both of Sumter; a daughter, Teresa Williams of Sumter; a brother, Robert Williams of Columbia; two sisters, Jessie Mae Williams of Columbia and Eartha W. Washington of Sumter; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, George Williams. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with Bishop Jeffrey Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 1:20 p.m. from the home of her daughter, 405 Penn St. The family will receive friends at the same home. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ELIZABETH “LIB” COMPTON WRIGHT

Elizabeth Compton Wright, 74, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, after an extended illness. Born Dec. 27, 1925, in Sumter, South Carolina, Mrs. Wright was the daughter of the late Benjamin Richard Compton and Elizabeth Hasty Compton. Educated in the public schools of Sumter, Mrs. Wright was graduated from Edmunds High School in 1943. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art at Converse College in 1947. While at Converse, she served as editor of the yearbook and was named to Who’s Who and the President’s Board. She was chosen as the Kappa Alpha Rose of Wofford College in 1948. A deeply spiritual, humble person, Mrs. Wright committed her life to teaching and living the Word of God. She was a dedicated Sunday School teacher and Youth Counselor, as well as President and Life Member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Wright felt there was no higher calling than to be a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, David Lloyd Wright, of Sumter, S.C.; daughters, Kathy Wright Dodd (husband David A. Dodd) of Roswell, Ga., and Ann Wright Wansley (husband J. David Wansley) of Florence, S.C. She cherished her role as grandmother to Elizabeth K. Wansley, Kathryn A. Dodd, J. David Wansley Jr., Allison R. Dodd, Ashley E. Dodd, and Hilary K. Dodd. Mrs. Wright is also survived by her dear siblings, B.R. Compton Jr. (wife Lois Compton) of Columbia, S.C., Dorothy C. Eaddy and Marjorie C. Lawrence, and sister-in-law, Allene J. Compton of Sumter. She was predeceased by her brother, Arland H. Compton Sr. Mrs. Wright dearly loved her many nieces and nephews. She was especially grateful for the care of her nephew, Dr. Arland Compton Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Dr. James Adams and Rev. Phil Jones officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 516 Vivian Road. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
