Born April 18, 1918, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Davis Baker and Hattie Rose Baker. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Bernice Burgess-McElveen, Route 2, Box 159, in the Mouzon community of Kingstree. SUMMERTON — Rosa Dyson Brown, 82, widow of Woodrow Brown, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Nov. 23, 1917, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Quincy Dyson Sr. and Darcus Ragin Dyson. Mrs. Brown attended Clarendon County public schools. Her faith led her to join Liberty Hill AME Church in her youth and remain a faithful member. Survivors include three sons, Woodrow Brown Jr. of Yonkers, N.Y., Quincy Brown of Bronx, N.Y., and Fred Brown of Summerton; four daughters, Mary Daisy Richardson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Ellen Pearson of New York, N.Y., Catherine Jones of Summerton and Florence Tinnin of White Plains, N.Y.; a sister, Ellen Dyson of Summerton; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and an adopted son whom she reared, Henry Richardson Jr. of Summerton. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi L. Duncan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosa Lee Joyner Hayward, 76, wife of Gonzales Hayward Sr., died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 26, 1924, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late John Joyner Sr. and Estelle Woods Joyner. Mrs. Hayward was a faithful member of the Sumter South Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Survivors besides her husband include seven sons, Gonzales Hayward Jr. of El Paso, Texas, Ronnie Mason of Philadelphia, Pa., Alfred Alonza Hayward of Beaufort, Donald L. Hayward of Yemassee, Otis Lee Hayward of Chaparral, N.M., Willie Hayward of New York, N.Y., and John Lee Hayward of Charlotte, N.C.; five daughters, Eartha Lee Kershaw, Frances Delores Johnson, Carol Elaine Deas, Valarie Denise Walker and Judy Lee Reddick, all of Sumter; a brother, Walter Joyner of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters, Catherine Joyner Spann of Sumter and Bertha Joyner Hayward of Philadelphia; 39 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John Joyner Jr., Mason Buddy Joyner and Blease Joyner; and four sisters, Lillian Bossard, Josephine Bloxom, Ethel Speech and Elizabeth Colclough. A wake service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the John W. Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late William and Maybelle Browder Ard. Mrs. Moody was a housewife and a sitter and attended Southside Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors besides her husband of the home include five sons, Timmy Moody, Allen Moody and Larry Moody, all of Darlington, Huey Jones of Gaston and Ches Jones of California; three daughters, Jenny M. Lloyd of Darlington, Sherry J. Hardin of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jan J. Stanton of Sumter; two brothers, Billy Ard of Sumter and Wayne Ard of Clarksville, Tenn.; four sisters, Agnes Rogers of Orangeburg, Margie Durham of Sumter, Wanda Munday of Prosperity and Judy Copeland of Sumter; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Annie Clark Moore, 84, widow of Clarence Moore, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 10, 1916, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late James and Hummie Gordon Clark. Mrs. Moore lived in Baltimore, Md., for many years. When she returned to South Carolina, she joined St. Peter AME Church in Rimini, where she was a very faithful member. Survivors include a devoted nephew and niece with whom she lived, Willie Lee and Carrie Gaymon Green of Sumter; seven nieces, Martha Hood and Annie Bell Moore, both of Baltimore, Md., Susan Jackson of Whitesville, N.C., Shirley Ford of Paterson, N.J., Rosa Conyers of Rimini, Julia Clark of Sumter and Martha Ragin of Pinewood; 37 grandnieces and grandnephews; and 80 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Morris Clark; three sisters, Lorraine Mack, Willene Ragin and Mattie Clark; five nephews, Ike Clark, Richard Clark, James Clark, Rufus Conyers and John Ragin; a niece, Susan Ragin Green; and a grandnephew, Aaron Green. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. MAGDALENE DOZIER

SUMMERTON — Magdalene Dozier, widow of Rubin Dozier, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mack Dingle and Lillie Frazier Dingle. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She joined St. Matthews AME Church after her marriage, where she served as class leader, president of the young adult choir for 38 years, secretary of the trustee board, first vice president of the missionary society and the stewardess board and a member of the NAACP. She was employed for many years as a school nurse in Clarendon School District 2 in Manning and office assistant to Dr. Keller in Summerton. Her latest employment was as a homemaker and friend of Dr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Coker and their children, and through the years that she was there, they became her extended family. Survivors include a son, Christopher C. Dozier of St. Matthews; a daughter-in-law, Vernetia Dozier of St. Matthews; and four grandchildren, Sonya Dozier, Antonio Dozier and Bryan Dozier, all of the home, and Darren J. Dozier of St. Matthews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Yvonne Dozier. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthews AME Church with the Rev. Sallie Nathaniel Martin, 66, wife of Willie Martin, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home. Born Jan. 5, 1934, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Henry Nathaniel and Susie Drayton Nathaniel. She was reared with the support of a loving family. She attended Sumter County public schools and later attended and graduated from York College in Queens, N.Y. She was a believer in Jesus from her youth, and she began her religious life with Joshua Baptist Church. After her marriage, she moved to New York, where she became a member of the Pentecostal House of Prayer for All People. When she returned to Sumter in 1996, she united with Church of God By Faith, where she worked faithfully. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Willie Martin Jr. of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Perry James Martin of St. Albans, Queens, N.Y.; a daughter, Thilitha Martin of Hempstead, N.Y.; a brother, Paul Nathaniel of Sumter; four sisters, Queenie Kind and Minister Jannette Jenkins, both of Sumter, Susan Martin of Freeport, N.Y., and Evangelist Louise Kind of New Rochelle, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and two adopted children, Arnell Martin and Ashley Martin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Church of God By Faith, 609 Atlantic Ave., with Elder E.P. Livingston officiating, assisted by the Rev. R.L. Williams, Elder Clevand McBride, Elder Thomas Gibbs, Bishop Luther Dingle, Evangelist Louise Kind and Elder Thomas Davis. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Richard A. Godwin Sr., 75, husband of Kathryn Hatfield Godwin, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at his home. Born in Lake City, he was a son of the late Delta Ira and Beulah Carpenter Godwin. Mr. Godwin was retired from the U.S. Army. He was a Mason, a Baptist, a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Legion. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include four sons, Richard “Ric” A. Godwin Jr. and wife, Tina, of Birmingham, Ala., Timothy “Boo Boo” B. Godwin and wife, Cindy, of Sumter, Jonathan O. Godwin and wife, Donna, of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and Douglas T. Foxworth and wife, Sarah, of Sumter; a daughter, Kathie Lynn Godwin Armstrong and husband, Steve, of Louisville, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. SUMMERTON — Elsie Crowell Failmezger, 93, widow of Eugene Allen Failmezger, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born May 6, 1907, in Perth Amboy, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Horace Crowell and Pearl Post Crowell. Mrs. Failmezger was a graduate of Montclair State College, taught in Plainfield, N.J., schools and resided in DeWitt, N.Y., from 1933 to 1987. She was co-owner of Air Pro Company in East Syracuse, N.Y., and treasurer of the Moses-DeWitt School in DeWitt. She was a member of the Summerton United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Robert C. Failmezger of Fayetteville, N.Y., and Eugene Allen Failmezger of Summerton; a sister, Evelyn V. Crowell of Lakewood, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Summerton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Altman officiating. A private burial service will be held at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in DeWitt, N.Y. Pallbearers will be grandsons. QUEENS VILLAGE, N.Y. — Deacon Lewis Howard, 55, husband of Thomasina Richburg Howard, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. Born Jan. 14, 1945, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Charlie Howard and Alma Jasper Howard. Mr. Howard was educated at Alcolu Elementary School and graduated from Manning Training School in 1964. In his youth, he joined Green Hill Baptist Church. After moving to New York, he joined Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board. He was a retired employee of Cornell Beverage Inc. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Bryant Howard of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Kenneth Howard of the home; and a sister, Jessie H. Humes of Manning. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. James S. Hundley, pastor, officiating and minister W.J. Frierson assisting. BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Oscar C. “Jack” Livingston, 77, widower of Doris P. Livingston, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, in Binghamton, N.Y. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of the late Leslie Paul Livingston and Ruby Cooper Livingston. Mr. Livingston was a veteran of World War II and retired to Sumter in 1982 after serving as a horticulturist with the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., for 37 years. He moved to Binghamton in 1998 to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa J. Conn of Binghamton; a sister, Gloria Teska of Gainesville, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael C. Livingston. Graveside services will be held at noon Tuesday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Mattox of Binghamton, N.Y., and the Rev. Tony Metze officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. He was born and reared in the Rock Hill and Spring Hill areas of Lee County. SUMMERTON — Magdalene Dozier died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mackie and Lillie Frazier Dingle. The family will receive friends at the home on Gipson Road. Services will be announced by King Funeral Home.

VENRO YATES

OLANTA — Venro “Jim” Yates died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Lake City-Scranton Healthcare Center. Born Sept. 3, 1931, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Paul and Maggie Johnson Yates. Mr. Yates was a Protestant and a farmer. Survivors include five brothers, Purvis Yates of Sumter, Clinton Yates and Donald Yates, both of Biloxi, Miss., and Fred Yates and Vernon Yates, both of Olanta; and two sisters, Stella Phelps of Florence and Anise Farley of Dundalk, Md. Mr. Yates was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Gibbons, Mary Emma Yates and Esterline Yates; and two brothers, Willard Yates Sr. and Carrol Yates. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home of Manning. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Turbeville. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

HAMPTON WASHINGTON

MANNING — Hampton Washington, husband of Eartha W. Washington, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born July 8, 1939, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Andrew Washington and Portia Tindal Washington. In his youth, Mr. Washington joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter and was a former member of the Spiritual Wisemen and Junior Wells and the Gospel Stars of Sumter. Survivors besides his wife of the home include three brothers, Jasper Washington of Washington, D.C., Gerald “Tom” Washington and Terry Washington of Hickory, N.C.; a sister, Mamie Washington White; a stepson, Holland Williams of Mayesville; and three stepdaughters, Jessica Williams, Sarah Victoria Williams and Tera Williams, all of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. M.G. Walters, Carnes Duren and Jack Lewis Jr. Burial will be in St. Mark Baptist Church cemetery, Silver. The funeral procession will leave the home, 921 Franklin Lane, at 11:15 a.m. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Bethel AME Church, Wedgefield. The family will receive friends at the home, and at the home of Gerald Washington, 40 Hudson St., Sumter. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
