TRELLUS WASHINGTON

WEDGEFIELD — Trellus “Trail” Washington, husband of Ada Joyner Washington, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at his home, 6500 Middleton Road. Born Aug. 21, 1920, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Andrew Washington and Portia Tindal Washington. Mr. Washington attended the public schools of Paxville and Wedgefield. In 1938, he moved to New York City and worked in various occupations before affiliating himself with Max Sloane Food Distributors, where he worked as a produce handler for 35 years before he retired. Mr. Washington joined Truehearts Baptist Church in New York, where he served as a deacon and trustee. He was also the lead singer of the Revelaires Gospel Quartet. After moving back to the area, Mr. Washington attended Bethel AME Church of Wedgefield. Mr. Washington was first married to the late Reata M. Washington and then to Ada Joyner Washington. Survivors besides his wife include six sons, Samuel Trail, Mark Andrew, Vaugh Coleman, Willie C. Joyner, Robert Joyner and Timothy Joyner; seven daughters, Linda Williams Washington, Rita Readus, Clementine Gardner, Priscilla Hatchett, Armie Ruth Joyner, Elaine Joyner and Mary Washington Robinson; three brothers, Jasper Washington, Gerald “Tom” Washington and Terry Washington; and a sister, Mamie Washington White. Mr. Washington was preceded in death by a daughter, Mellanee Odett Joyner, and a brother, Hampton Washington. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. M.G. Walters, Carnes Duren and Jack Lewis Jr. Burial will be in St. Mark Baptist Church cemetery, Silver. The funeral procession will leave the home of Eartha Lee Washington, 921 Franklin Lane, at 11:15 a.m. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Bethel AME Church, Wedgefield. The family will receive friends at the home, 6500 Middleton Road, and at the home of Gerald Washington, 40 Hudson St., Sumter. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

INEZ W. WHITE

NEWARK, N.J. — Inez W. White died Monday, July 31, 2000, at University of Medicine and Dentistry. Born Nov. 14, 1926, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John White and Ethel White. Ms. White received her high school accreditation at age 16 from Lincoln High School. In 1967, she moved to New Jersey and attended Essex County College in Newark. Ms. White worked in the social services field with mentally challenged children at Woodbridge State School for more than 10 years. Survivors include seven sons, Thomas Lee, Sylvester, Adelmus, Eric, Ancin, Ulysses and Darryl, all of New Jersey; a brother, Nathaniel Bradley of Tabor City, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at The John S. Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Ernest Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Mulberry Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Flossie York, 534 Knights Bridge Road. EDGEFIELD — Sallie Strom Long, 86, wife of Nathan C. Long, of 781 Columbia Road died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Edgefield Health Care Center. Born in Edgefield County, she was valedictorian of Edgefield High School and a magna cum laude graduate of Anderson College. Mrs. Long was a former member of Grace Baptist Church in Sumter for 50 years. Survivors besides her husband include a son, Joseph Henry Long of Baltimore; three brothers, Edwin “Red” Strom, Roy Strom and Harold Strom, all of Edgefield; four sisters, Peggy Davis of Orlando, Fla., and Betty Carey, Helen McManus and Naomi Medlock, all of Edgefield. CLARENCE D. HILL

MANNING — Clarence Darrell Hill, 75, husband of Pearlie Mae Nobles Hill, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Riverside-Water Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Va., after a brief illness. Born July 9, 1925, in Charleston, Miss., he was a son of the late Jim Hill and Ethel Johnson Hill. Mr. Hill attended the public schools of St. Stephen and attended St. Stephen Baptist Church. In his youth, he moved to Washington, D.C., and was employed with the ACL Railroad and the school system. Mr. Hill later moved to New York, N.Y., and worked for the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, retiring in December 1989. After retirement he moved with his family to Manning. Survivors besides his wife include two brothers, Joseph Hill of Manning and William Hill of Monterey, Calif. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Hill Jr. and Ben Hill, and two sisters, Louise Blackwell and Mabel Gilliard. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., with the Rev. F.G. Haskell officiating, assisted by the Revs. Thomas Myers, Edward Butler and Joseph Myers, and Pastors Stephen Davis and Eugene Mason. Henry Evans, husband of Ruth Evans, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 6, 1934, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Ida Mae Evans Jones. Mr. Evans joined Clark United Methodist Church in his youth. He was employed by Sumter Funeral Service Inc. for many years. Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include five sons, Nathan Evans of California, Herbert Evans and Andrew Evans, both of Summerton, and Michael Evans and Roland Evans, both of New York; two sisters, Dorothy Slater of Baltimore and Naomi Hardaway of Austin, Texas; and numerous grandchildren. STATEBURG — Dennis Christian Rath, 62, husband of Genevieve Alice Desportes Rath, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at his home. Born in Kulm, N.D., he was a son of the late Edwin Rath and Anna Conrad Rath. Mr. Rath was a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant and employed by Union Camp Corp. Survivors besides his wife of Stateburg include two daughters, Ashlyn Rath Oswald of Gilbert and Stephanie Rath of Sumter; and a brother, Russell Rath of Washington state. EFFINGHAM — Luedell Lillian Miles Parkhurst-McAllister, 89, widow of Eustace McAllister, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Scranton, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Olice McCutcheon Miles. Mrs. Parkhurst-McAllister was a homemaker and member of Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Ladies Bible Class. She was first married to the late Charles “Brownie” Parkhurst. Survivors include three sons, Cleo Miles and Joe Parkhurst, both of Scranton, and Harry Parkhurst of Lake City; two daughters, Irene Arnold of Chariton, Iowa, and Peggy Hudson of Effingham; five stepsons, John David McAllister and Jimmy McAllister, both of Lake City, Tommy McAllister of Sumter and Bobby McAllister and Mickey McAllister, both of Columbia; 28 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in Lake City Cemetery. MANNING — Gem Barnes Altman, 82, widow of James Coley Altman Sr., died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in Greenville. Born Aug. 2, 1917, in Embree, she was a daughter of the late Guy Barnes and Mattie Belton Beard Barnes. Mrs. Altman was a retired secretary for the Clarendon County Auditor’s Office. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, James Coley Altman Jr. and wife, Daylene, of Greenville; three daughters, Martha Davis and husband, Larry, of West Columbia, Gem Poteat and husband, Bill, of Abbeville, and Nelle Boyce and husband, James, of Jacksonville, N.C.; a brother, Scott Barnes of Columbia; two sisters, Betty Clegg-Taylor of Columbia and Mary Barnes Hayes of Greer; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. NEW YORK, N.Y. — Daisy Lee Frierson Brown, 57, widow of John H. Brown, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Riverdale Nursing Home in Riverdale, N.Y. Born Feb. 21, 1943, in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Harmon Frierson Sr. and Mary Lue Briggs Frierson. Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Scotts Branch High School in Summerton, S.C. She was a member of St. Matthew AME Church. She was employed by the state of New York Department of Social Services, where she was a supervisor, until her health failed. Survivors include three brothers, Harmon Frierson Jr., Grant Frierson and Hamilton Frierson, all of New York, N.Y.; and four aunts, Carnetta Frierson, Lucille Briggs and Bell Briggs, all of Summerton, and Helen Butler of New York, N.Y. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Frierson. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew AME Church, Route 3, Summerton, with the Rev. CHARLOTTE — Annie Corine Felder, widow of Lucius Felder Sr., died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Carolina Medical Center. Born July 12, 1909, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late William and Rosa Bines Mack. Mrs. Felder joined St. Matthew Baptist Church in her youth and served faithfully as president of the missionary board and as a member of the church school, the Praise and Worship Committee, the executive board of the Sumter Baptist Association and in several other capacities. She was devoted to her church until her illness. Survivors include a son, Lucius Felder Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Louise F. Shackelford of Charlotte; a brother, Collin Mack of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Minnie Gaymon of Philadelphia, Pa., and Flora Woods of Secaucus, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Felder; and a daughter, Geneva F. Dixon. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Baptist Church in Sumter, S.C., with the Rev. M.G. Born Aug. 22, 1939, in Johnsonville, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Stone and Juanita Keefe Stone. Mrs. Lowder was a nurse and a Protestant. Survivors include a daughter, Kristi Bolton of Columbia; a grandson, Marcus Bolton of Columbia; and a very special aunt, Lucille Jones of Pamplico. ALCOLU — Brother Aldwin Waithe Jr., 76, died Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Dec. 30, 1923, in New York, N.Y., he was a son of the late Aldwin Waithe Sr. and Emma Richardson Waithe. Mr. Waithe attended Brooklyn, N.Y. schools. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Pentecostal House of Deliverance in New York, N.Y. After moving to Manning, he became a member of Resurrection Tabernacle of Deliverance, where he was a faithful member of the usher board and choir. Survivors include his care giver, Pastor Thelma Kennedy; six god-daughters, Stephanie Brown of the home, Shakeira Simmons and Tattianna James, both of Manning, and LeSha Thompson, Lakevia Durant and Tia Durant, all of Sumter; and two god-sons, Erick Brown and Derrick Brown, both of the home. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Ark of God Pentecostal Church, Main Street, Summerton, with the Archbishop John H. Griffin, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop McKinley Green, Elder Robert Edwards, Pastor Herman Rembert, Pastor Thelma R. Kennedy, Pastor E. Born July 12, 1909, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William Mack and Rosa Bines Mack. Survivors include a son, Lucious Felder; and a daughter, Louise Shackelford. He was a retired machinist for U.S. Pipe in Alabama. Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons, Michael Leon Kelso of Cullman, Ala., and Anthony Phillip Kelso of Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Melvin Kelso of Cullman, Ala., and Clarence Kelso of Hartselle, Ala.; a sister, Barbara Puckett of Vinemont, Ala.; five grandchildren, Michelle Leann Kelso and Robert Douglas Kelso II, both of South Carolina, and Emily Marie Kelso, Angela Louise Kelso and Matthew Anthony Kelso, all of Birmingham, Ala. MANNING — Eva K. Abraham, 97, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born April 5, 1903, in Sandersville, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Rev. Alonzo and Willie B. Archer. HEMINGWAY — Janie Langley Gray, the daughter of the late Jim Silis Langley and Margie Langley, departed this life on Saturday, July 15, 2000, at her residence in Hemingway, S.C. She was born on March 10, 1938, in Georgetown County. She completed her high school education at Howard High School in Georgetown, S.C. After graduating from high school, she graduated from Morris College in Sumter, S.C. In 1962, she became the first member of her family to receive a bachelor’s degree. Later, she earned a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. She taught at various schools: Deep Creek Elementary, Chavis Elementary and Pleasant Hill Middle Schools. She served in the public school system for a total of 31 years. She became a Christian at an early age at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. In 1960, she married James Morgan Gray. To this union, three children were born. Later she joined Jerusalem AME Church. While a member at Jerusalem AME Church, she served in the following capacities: conference secretary, chairperson of Stewardess Board No. 5, secretary for Stewardship, representative of Christian Education Leader, Sunday school teacher, coordinator for After-School Tutorial Program. She also was a mentor for children in the community. She was a member of Mu Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She is survived by her mother, Margie Langley; her husband, James Morgan Gray; three children, James Morgan Gray Jr. (Malissa) of Atlanta, Ga., Demetra Yuette Nelson (Arthur) of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Delvakia Gray (Janet) of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren, Morgan, Devin, Arthur, Haley, Jannise and Jamie; nine sisters and brothers, Creola Williams and Eddie Langley (Dorothy) of Middletown, Conn., Peter Langley and Ernest Langley, both of New York, N.Y., Lillie Glover of Washington, D.C., Anna Langley of Columbia, S.C., Margie Vernon (Murray), Virginia Langley and Velma Langley, all of Hemingway, S.C.; 14 nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jerusalem AME Church in Hemingway with the Rev. James Frost officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. MANNING — Sarah Elizabeth Shuler Holladay, 85, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 11, 1914, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Gayle and Martha Elizabeth Holladay Gayle. Mrs. Holladay was a 1932 graduate of Summerton High School. She was the former owner and operator of Shuler’s Restaurant in Manning for many years. She was a member of Beauclare Chapter No. 20 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a former associate matron and then worthy matron of Manning OES. She had been a member of OES since 1953. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Wilson near Manning. She was also a former sales person. She was first married to the late Ralph W. Shuler Sr. and then to the late James Nelson Holladay. Survivors include two sons, Fred W. Shuler of Darlington and Ralph W. Gayle of Summerton and John H. Gayle of Sereville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. George Gain and the Rev. Thomas Burgess officiating. Burial will be in Island Cemetery in the Providence community of Orangeburg County. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Star Home in Sumter or to the Gideons. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PAUL SINGLETON JR.

Paul Singleton Jr. died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 21, 1943, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Paul Sr. and Ethel Lee Huggins Singleton. Survivors include his wife, Julia Singleton of Asheville, N.C.; five sons, Edward Singleton of Asheville, James Singleton of Virginia Beach, Va., Odis Singleton of Atlanta, Ga., Kenny Singleton of Sumter and Dedrick McDowell of Olanta; a daughter, Julia Singleton of Asheville; a brother, Albert Singleton of Wilmington, N.C.; four sisters, Barbara Smith of Sumter, Shirley Bowen of Asheville, Virginia Tarry of Wilmington and Carolyn Singleton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and an uncle, nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Odis Singleton. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Canty Memorial Church of God In Christ with Supt. Eugene Canty, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, George and Barbara Smith, 2945 Ervin Lane. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MARY G. STOKES

Mary Gray Stokes of 520 Carroll Drive, 77, wife of Jack Ervin Stokes, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 12, 1922, in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Algernon Gray and Esther Louise Harvey Gray. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class and the Ladies Missionary Group. She was a member of the Shepherd’s Center and the Senior Bowling League. Survivors besides her husband include a son, Jack A. Stokes and his wife, Gloria Coker Stokes, of Sumter; three daughters, Kay Stokes Fenters and her husband, Jerry A. Fenters, of Florence, Barbara Louise Stokes Towery and her husband, Pete J. Towery, of Charlotte, N.C., and Alice Marie Stokes Rabun and her husband, William A. Rabun, of Fort Mill; two brothers, John Gray and Rupert Gray, both of Darlington; and eight grandchildren, Allen Fenters, Wendy Towery-Stove, Keri Towery, Angie Stokes, Missy Stokes, Sabriena Rabun, Alex Rabun and Jacob Rabun. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Fenters. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church, with Dr. James Chandler, Dr. Thomas Painter and the Rev. James Baker officiating. Internment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bullock Funeral Home. Bullock Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES A. HUNTER

Charles Alexander Hunter, 67, husband of Mary Horger Hunter, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Morganton, N.C., he was a son of the late Edward Phifer Hunter and Bessie Roper Hunter. Mr. Hunter attended St. Marks United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Western Carolina University. He was a United States Army veteran and he was a retired branch manager of Commercial Credit Corporation. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Randal Roper Hunter of Sumter, two daughters, Linda Hunter Fuqua of Valdosta, Ga., and Gayle Hunter Wenzel of Columbia; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Sayre officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 9 Curtiswood Ave. Pallbearers will be Gary Wenzel, David Fuqua, Scott Hunter, Lain Whisenhunt, Andy Whisenhunt, Gene Horger and Charles P. Hunter. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
