LAKE CITY — Amos Lee Williams, 64, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Norman Williams and Rena Cooper Williams. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County, Friendship schools. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Tommy Lee Williams of New York, N.Y.; seven sisters, Lisa Stewart and Tabatha Walker, both of Birmingham, Ala., Nicole Williams and Noodle Waterman, both of New York, N.Y., Reene Williams of New Jersey, and Gwendolyn Williams and Debarah Williams; three stepbrothers, Jervey Gordon of Lake City, and Otto Gordon and Wilbert Gordon, both of Florida; a stepsister, Emma Cooper of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five aunts, Mary B. Cooper, Lillie Mae Thomas, and Delois Pressley, all of Hemingway, Rosalee Pauley of New Jersey and Amanda Childs of Florida; 10 grandchildren; a special friend, Joyce Rodgers of Lake City; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Lake City, with the Rev. Roosevelt Geddis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Debra Graham Walker, 49, the wife of Chris D. Walker, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at her home. Born in Welch, W.Va., she was a daughter of Margaret Green Hancock and the late Samuel Gary Graham Sr. Mrs. Walker was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Furman High School and Sumter Technical College. She was employed by Sumter School District 2 as a benefits administrator. Survivors besides her husband and mother, both of Sumter, include a daughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Jordan of Sumter; two stepsons, Christopher Zeke Walker and Cameron Zane Walker, both of Sumter; two brothers, Dane Allen Graham Sr. of Columbia and Samuel Gary Graham Jr. of Newberry; a sister, Nancy Graham Fowler of Union; 10 nephews; and nine nieces. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with Dr. James Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Pinewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at home, 485 Sierra Street. Marvin Newman, 74, widower of Valaree Weatherly Newman, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Marvin Mood Newman and the late Bobbie Yates Newman. He was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church and retired from GTE Telephone Co., with 42 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include three sons, Eddie Newman, Michael Newman and his wife, Peggy Mitchell Newman, and Kenny Newman, all of Sumter; a daughter, Christie Newman Barrett and her husband, Wrenn Barrett, of Columbia; three brothers, Mood Newman, Billy Newman and Knox Newman, all of Sumter; two sisters, Bertha Ridgeway of Sumter and Francis Lewis of Laurinburg, N.C.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Pam Scott Newman. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday at Zoar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Watson officiating. Burial will be in Zoar Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Newman, Boyd Ridgeway, Sonny Newman, Shaw Lewis, Frankie Ridgeway, Jeffrey Newman, Wayne Newman and Tommy Newman. LYNCHBURG — Willie J. McDowell, 63, husband of Inez Chandler McDowell, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born July 31, 1937, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Henry “Funny Boy” McDowell and Josephine Miller McDowell. The family will receive friends at the home, 1930 Yarborough Road, in the St. John community of Lynchburg. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

Lillie J. Copeland died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Cypress Nursing Facility. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Lelia J. Johnson. The family will receive friends at U.S. 76 East in Maysville. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter.

JOHNNIE McFADDEN

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. — Johnnie McFadden, 82, widower of Annie Epps McFadden, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Franklin General Hospital. Born Oct. 10, 1917, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Richard McFadden and Mary Wilson McFadden. He received his formal education in Mayesville. He was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years. After relocating to New York in 1998, he became a baptized believer and joined One Way Church of Christ in Laurelton, N.Y. He was the owner and operator of a large farm. He received the outstanding employee medal from Campbell Soup Co. for working 10 years without taking leave. Survivors include seven sons, Sammie McFadden, Johnny McFadden Jr., Alexander McFadden and Truman McFadden, all of Alcolu, Henry McFadden of Brandon, Fla., Richard McFadden of Hollis, N.Y., Wendel McFadden of Charlotte, N.C.; four daughters, Daisy McFadden of Alcolu, Louise McFadden of Queens Village, N.Y., Sarah Hampton of Floral Park, N.Y., and Virginia Tucker of Elmont, N.Y.; a brother, Willie McFadden of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Hattie Montomery of Sumter and Mary Lou Benjamin of Florida City, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Harmony Presbyterian Church, S.C. 301 North in Alcolu. The Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, will officiate. MAYESVILLE — Ella Louise Temoney China, widow of Flander China, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at his home. Born Oct. 1, 1927, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late Parish and Mary White Temoney. Mrs. China was a lifetime, dedicated member of Beulah AME Church, where she served faithfully on various organizations in the church and committees such as the WMS, citizenship and senior choir. She participated in the brotherhood/homecoming, serving many years as captain. Survivors include four daughters, Mary L. Titus and Eartha M. China, both of Mayesville, Louise C. Brown of Wedgefield and Linda C. Olds of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Earthey Mae Holmes; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jessie Mae China. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary. BRONX, N.Y. — Annie Mae Cooper, 76, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, N.Y. Born Nov. 14, 1923, in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Hampton Cooper and Florence Johnson Cooper. She attended Goodwill Parochial School in the Mayesville, S.C., community. In her early youth, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Melina Presbyterian Church in Gable, S.C. Survivors include two daughters, Bessie Cooper of Bronx and Nancy Cooper of Long Island, N.Y.; two brothers, Willie Cooper Sr. of Gable and Roosevelt Cooper of Camden, N.J.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by several siblings. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, in Gable with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. Haskell “Snook” Davis, widower of Pauline Johnson Davis, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Born May 1, 1919, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Henry and Lillie Williams Francis. Mr. Davis was reared in a Christian home and attended Congruity Presbyterian Church, USA, before being inducted in the U.S. Army. He served for four years and received many decorations and citations including World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the American Theatre Service Ribbon. Survivors include two brothers, William “Tozie” Francis of Bronx, N.Y., and Mason Francis of Sumter; three sisters, Pearl Pringle, Lillie Muwwakkil and Matilda F. Green, all of Sumter; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by two stepsons, one stepgrandson; and three brothers, Harry James, Robert Francis and George Francis. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Congruity Presbyterian Church, USA, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. ALBERT L. GEORGE

DALZELL — Albert Lee George, widower of Meta Wade George, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Alterra Sterling House in Sumter. Born Jan. 18, 1908, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of the late Clarence and Lelia Evans George. Mr. George grew up in Philadelphia. After graduating from high school, he attended Hampton Institute and Howard University. He later moved to Mount Vernon, N.Y., and while in Mount Vernon, he worked at the U.S Post Office for many years and operated his own upholstery business. He retired from the Post Office in the early 1970s, but continued the upholstery business for another 10 years. He was very active in First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon and served as a deacon. In 1993, he moved to Dalzell and became a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Rembert. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly June George of Dalzell and Margaret Alexandra George of Dayton, Minn.; two brothers, Clarence George and Eugene George; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Anthony Taylor, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Richard James Sr. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 4020 Peach Orchard Road, Dalzell. Jean Norton Herring, 71, widow of James L. Herring, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Berkeley, Calif., she was a daughter of the late Earl Archer Norton and Vera Claire Gehring Norton. Mrs. Herring was retired from the Department of Social Services with 25 years of service. Survivors include a son, Michael G. Herring of Chesterfield, Mo.; three sisters, Joan Peebles of Sumter, Barbara Hurd of St. Helena, Calif., and Claire Nelson of Long Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Watson officiating. Esther McKnight McNeil, widow of Henry McNeil, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, the Rev. James and Joan Williams, 2436 Peach Orchard Road. Born Dec. 5, 1925, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James and Maggie Cabbagestalk McKnight. Mrs. McNeil attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she attended St. John Baptist Church. Later, she united with the Church of God by Faith, where she confessed the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior. Survivors include four daughters, Mary Rhames of New York, N.Y., Ruby Rogers and Joan Williams, both of Sumter, and Dianne Randall of Sumter; an additional son-in-law, Earl W. Rogers of New York, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Samuel McKnight; two brothers, Willie McKnight and James McKnight; and a sister, Myther Farmer. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Scriven Funeral Home with the Rev. James Williams officiating. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. FLOYD PALMER JR.

Floyd Palmer Jr., husband of Dorothy Rush Palmer, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 14, 1937, in Opa-Locka, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Floyd Palmer Sr. and Rossetta Simmons Palmer. In his youth, Mr. Palmer accepted Christ as Lord and savior, and in 1958, he joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where he served diligently with the chancel choir, church school, Vacation Bible School and deacon ministry. He regularly attended the Wednesday evening and Saturday morning Bible studies. He served his country for more than 20 years in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Wyoming, Philippine Islands, Guam and California. He was the recreational therapist at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia, 3 West and psychiatry, for more than 20 years, where he also served as office manager for AFGE No. 1915. An avid volunteer, he served over 2,000 hours. He was active in the community and was the founder and worshipful master of Mabuhah No. 59 in the Philippines. He received his 32nd degree and was a member of the Shriners and Eastern Star, St. Paul Lodge No. 8 and the NAACP. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Edmond Lavern Palmer of Columbia; three daughters, Yvette Addease Montsho, Floydean B. Palmer-McLeod and Wygelia Emelda Palmer, all of Sumter; a stepsister, Doris Carter of Florida; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank; and two sisters, Blanche and Vasta. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with Senior Pastor Marion H. Newton officiating, assisted by Minister Irene Anthony, Pastor Ellie Palmer and Pastor Joann Murrill. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Florence National Cemetery in Florence with full military honors. Members of the Masonic Order will be pallbearers. Deacons of the church will be honorary pallbearers. Flower bearers will be members of the church’s deaconess ministry. Honorary flower bearers will be members of the Eastern Star. NEW YORK — Curtis Inabinet Scoville, 67, widower of Gertrude “Ann” Billingly Scoville, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Hillside Manor in Hillsboro, N.Y. Born July 4, 1933, in Orangeburg County, S.C., he was a son of the late Toping H. Scoville and Mildred Thompson Scoville. In his youth, Mr. Scoville joined Granger Baptist Church in Elloree, S.C. Later in life, he was affiliated with the Episcopal Church and was a faithful member. He attended East Middle Elementary School in Bowman, S.C., Voorhees High School and Junior College and Denmark Technical College in Denmark, S.C. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. Survivors include a daughter, Shandal Scoville of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two brothers, Larcus M. Scoville and Harold C. Scoville of Orangeburg; two sisters, Hermine S. Jenkins of Bowman, S.C., and Delois S. Grant of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Saint Luke Presbyterian Church, USA, 324 Mingo St., N.E., Orangeburg, with the Rev. Isiaih D. Phinisee, the Rev. Willie N. VERMELL H. AMOS

Vermell “Plum” Hasty Amos, 88, widow of John Henry Amos Jr., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 13, 1912, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Preston and Vermell Pearson Hasty. Mrs. Amos was a lifelong member of Lagree AME Church, where she served on the gospel and senior choirs, Stewardess Board No. 1 and the ladies missionary society until her health declined. Survivors include four daughters, Wilma Royster of Lincoln, Neb., Bennie Mae Ellerbe of Wyndanch, N.Y., Martha Schoefield of Summerville and Roberta Carter of Sumter; a brother, David Hasty of Sumter; a sister, Fannie Pack of Sumter; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Clotel Amos Barnes, and a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Lagree AME Church on Kolb Road with the Rev. Henry Williams officiating, assisted by the Revs. Abraham Temoney, M. Butler Ferguson, Robert Galloway, Joann Murrell and Jerome Butler. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Roberta Carter, 316 Wyoming Drive. The family will receive friends at the same home. Memorials may be made to Lagree AME Church or to the Leukemia Foundation. Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

CHRISTINE W. BEASLEY

BISHOPVILLE — Christine W. Beasley, 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Horace G. Woodham and Zada Mozingo Woodham. Mrs. Beasley was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She was a retired school teacher, having taught school in Lee and Darlington counties for more than 40 years. She was first married to the late William J. McIntyre, later to the late G.S. Pate and later to the late Melvin R. Beasley. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Jeannie D. McIntyre of Sumter; a grandson, Lt. Col. LeGette McIntyre and his wife, Jill McIntyre, of San Antonio, Texas; a granddaughter, Jenny M. McDaniel of Sumter; and four great-grandchildren, Alisha McDaniel and Hailey McDaniel, both of Sumter, and Myles McIntyre and Shelby Hobbler, both of Virginia. She was preceded in death by a son, William J. McIntyre Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville with Dr. John Mark Jones, the Rev. James Frazier and the Rev. Hazel Mixon officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 318 W. Council St., Bishopville. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

EVELYN S. BOYKIN

Evelyn Sanders Boykin, 51, wife of Samuel Howard Boykin, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 4, 1948, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late John Sanders Sr. and Beatrice Richardson Sanders and the stepdaughter of Essie Sanders. In her youth, Mrs. Boykin joined Walker Avenue Church of God, where she served faithfully in many capacities until her health failed. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Sumter and Bronx Community College in New York. For many years, she worked at the Sumter Department of Social Services, and for the past 26 years she was employed at Shaw AFB Hospital. Survivors besides her husband and her stepmother include two sons, Samuel Howard “Craig” Boykin II and Ryan Travis Boykin. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Sanders Jr.; a sister, Margaret Sanders Johnson; and her foster mother, Edell Harvin. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Walker Avenue Church of God with the Rev. Bobby Damon, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. David Quick and the Rev. Larry Weston. Burial will be in High Hill AME Church cemetery. Members of the Class of 1966 of Lincoln High School and members of Walker Avenue Church of God will serve as pallbearers. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 700 N. Kings Highway. James Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
