Dorothy Hester Kennedy, 89, widow of A. Ryan Kennedy, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at a local nursing home. Born in Augusta, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Herbert Harrison and Marion Galloway Hester. Mrs. Kennedy lived most of her life in Sumter, where she retired from Wachovia Bank and was for years an avid golfer at Sunset Country Club. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include a sister, Bobbie H. Hopkins of Garden Grove, Calif.; a cousin, Jean Harriet P. Bruner of Augusta, Ga.; nieces, Pat A. Mallon of Millington, N.J., Babs D. Bevis of Nice, Calif., Marion H. Nishi of Cypress, Calif., Meg H. Volk of Granada Hills, Calif., and Meg K. Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; nephews, C. Howard Mallon of Sumter, Michael Hopkins of Manhattan Beach, Calif. and Algie Kennedy of Moncks Corner. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Belle H. Mallon and Laura H. Daughtridge. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sumter Cemetery with Dr. James Adams officiating. Bullock Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ZELIME H. McKEOWN

Zelime Harby McKeown, 79, wife of Harry McKeown, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at her home. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Judge Horace Harby and Daisy Bowman Harby. Mrs. McKeown was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Constance Herbert Sunday School Class. Survivors include her husband of 58 years of Sumter; two daughters, Jeanne Reaves and her husband, Tom Reaves, of Columbia and Zelime “Lemie” Lentz of Tryon, N.C.; a brother, Horace D. Harby of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Harry Tobin “Toby” McKeown. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sumter Cemetery with Dr. James Adams officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Alan Lareau, John William Gordon, Alex M. Gover, James D. OXFORD, Ga. — James A. Parker Sr., 84, husband of Carole Parker, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Rockdale Hospital in Conyers, Ga. Born Sept. 8, 1916, in Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of the late Boney B. and Eva White Parker. Formerly of Sumter, S.C., Mr. Parker had made his home in Newton County, Ga., for the past 16 years, where he was very active in Newton County politics, having served as president of the North Newton Civic Association for 10 years. He retired from the International Brotherhood of Carpenters, where he was the secretary and treasurer of the Retiree Club. Mr. Parker was a member of Mt. Tabor Methodist Church and the Conyers Philologia Masonic Lodge No. 178 F&AM. He was formerly married to Inez Parker of Doraville, Ga. Survivors besides his wife of Oxford include three daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly Jean and John Monaco of Fairfax, Va., Sylvia Ann and Leon Robertson of Kansas City, Mo., and Lori and Mike Stapp of Conyers, Ga.; three sons and daughters-in-law, James A. Parker Jr. of New Ellington, S.C., Donald Ray and Portia Parker of Powder Springs, Ga., and Allen Parker of Alpharetta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Clara June of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home in Covington, Ga., with the Rev. Carl Standard officiating. MANNING — Mildred Bivens Pendergrass, 76, wife of Deacon James Pendergrass Sr., died Monday, Oct. 1, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born Dec. 23, 1923, in Polkton, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Wil Frank Givens and Emma Marble Bivens. Mrs. Pendergrass attended the public schools in Anderson County, N.C. She joined Kingstree Progressive Church of Jesus in her youth. She later joined Manning Progressive Church of Jesus, where she served faithfully as a member of the adult choir and missionary society. Survivors besides her husband include three sons, Deacon Jerome Pendergrass, James Pendergrass and Deacon Charles Pendergrass, all of Manning; six daughters, Rosa Goodwin of Eastover, Ethel Fulton and Charlotte McCready, both of Baltimore, Md., Mamie McFadden and Bobbie Wilson, both of Manning, and Helen Hamlet of Kingstree; two grandsons whom she reared, Timothy Pendergrass of Sumter and Kevin Pendergrass of Columbia; an adopted granddaughter, Terrie Pendergrass of Columbia; a sister, Cora Staton of Oakboro, N.C.; 34 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elsie Reed; and a grandson, Ricky Pendergrass. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Manning Progressive Church of Jesus, S.C. 521, Manning, with Bishop James B. Wilson, pastor, officiating. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late David Jasper Robertson and Janie Holland Robertson. Survivors include four sons, Albert Baker of Mountain Park, N.C., Leonard C. SUMMERTON — Ellis Clifford Covan, widower of Willie Jo Brooks Covan, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Aug. 20, 1922, in Monroeville, Ala., he was a son of the late Bryant Covan and Velma Miller Covan. Mr. Covan attended Liberty Hill AME Church in St. Paul. He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran. He served during World War II and was a P.O.W. in Germany, a member of the 343 Bomb Squadron, 98 Bomb Group, and a recipient of American Theatre Ribbon, European African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with three bronze stars, Victory Medal, Purple Heart, Air Force Medal with three bronze clusters and Distinguished Flying Cross Medal. Survivors include two sons, David K. Covan of Columbia and Robert Clifford Covan of Summerton; two daughters, Billie Jo Yomtob of Sumter and Diane Covan of Chapin; a brother, Harvey Covan of Lillington, N.C.; a sister, Ethel Matuska of Shalimar, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Clayton and Jesse Yomtob and Brittany and Danielle Benenhaley. He was preceded in death by a son, William Bryan Covan; a daughter, Susan Elaine Covan; and a brother, Bill Covan. BISHOPVILLE — Carolyn McKnight Woods, wife of Johnnie Woods Sr., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, from injuries suffered in a car accident on St. Charles Road. Born June 14, 1949, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Johnson McKnight and Willie Mae Gilyard McKnight. Mrs. Woods was reared with the loving support of a loving family. She attended Lee County public schools. Seeking divine guidance, she joined Galilee Baptist Church and was baptized. Survivors besides her husband include a son, Johnnie McKnight of the home; two daughters, Jessica S. Woods and Naja Woods, both of the home; two brothers, George McKnight of Columbia and Charlie McKnight of St. Charles; two sisters, Thelma Hodge and Alice Woods, both of Mayesville;; and a special niece, Rhunette Woods of Sumter. Essie Mae Lowery Hampton Baker, 74, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 11, 1926, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Lowery and Corina Moses Lowery. Mrs. Baker attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined St. John AME Church in the Workman community of Kingstree. She was first married to the late Raleigh James Hampton, and then to the late Alfair “Cottry” Baker. Survivors include five sons, Johnny Lowery of Hampton, Va., Henry Hampton Sr. of New Zion, Roosevelt Hampton of Kingstree, the Rev. Richard Hampton of Sumter and Lee Roy Hampton of the home; two daughters, Rosa Hampton of Sumter and Bertha L. Hampton of Bridgeport, Conn.; three stepdaughters, Ida Rich of Columbia, Sandra Woods of Alcolu and Ruth McFadden of Turbeville; five half- brothers; a half-sister; 25 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Brazzie “Moochie” Shaw Brailsford, widow of George Brailsford, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 8, 1919, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Wiley Shaw and Josephine Johnson Shaw. Mrs. Brailsford attended Lee County public schools. She joined Mt. Olive AME Church in her youth and served on several organizations until her health failed. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. Survivors include two sons, Junior Shaw of Sumter and George Shaw of Newark, N.J.; a daughter, Lula Mae Pershay of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Eartha Lee Martin of Bishopville; an adopted daughter, Carrie Brisbon of Columbia; a brother, Sylvester James of Sumter; three sisters, Annie Bradford and Rosa Green, both of Sumter, and Betty Simmons of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four brothers, George Shaw, Marcus Shaw, Wiley Shaw Jr. and Isaac Washington; and six sisters, Bessie Rufus, Evelena Martin, Dora Pearson, Lula Washington, Sing Shaw and Shug Dargon. Willie Reginald Brunson, husband of Inez P. Brunson, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 9, 1912, in Paxville, he was a son of the late Rev. Ellison and Molly Brunson. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, DeLeon T. Brunson of Sumter, Isiah Brunson of Washington, D.C., Larry Brunson of New York and John J. Brunson of Columbia; five daughters, Willine B. Cocklin, Hattie Richburg, Edith B. Williams, Merline Brown and Erlene Williams, all of Sumter; a grandson he reared as his own, Pastor Ray A. Sanders of Columbia; a sister, Bessie B. Minson of Columbia; 33 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. MANNING — Dorothy Mungo McDowell, widow of Robert McDowell, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Roper Care Alliance in Charleston. Born June 22, 1931, in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Curtis Gaskin and Genova Mungo. Mrs. McDowell attended Chesterfield County schools. She was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, member of the missionary society and in several other capacities. She was also the owner and operator of McDowell’s Soda Shop for several years. Survivors include a son, John Aaron McDowell of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Doris McDowell of Chicago, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Barbara Pringle Staldings of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Willie Sowell of Manning; a sister, Sylvia Edwards of Baltimore, Md.; a grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald G. McDowell. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Harmony Presbyterian Church (USA) in Alcolu with the Rev. Carnell Hampton officiating. GILBERT E. McGREW

CAMDEN — Gilbert Eugene McGrew, husband of Rachel O’Daniel McGrew, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000. Born in 1912, he was a son of the late Charles Weston and Emma Jackson McGrew. Mr. McGrew had military service in World War II and left the service after the war with the rank of major. He retired from the S.C. Department of Education, where he held the position of state supervisor of trade and industrial education. Mr. McGrew attended Sumter public schools and Clemson University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in textile chemistry, followed by a postgraduate course in industrial education. He served as dean of men at Spartanburg Junior College as well as a professor in chemistry and physics. He moved to Camden in 1937 and taught industrial arts and diversified occupations. In Camden, he also served as local supervisor of a defense training program, which included the training of welders, shipfitters and machine tool operators until he was called to active duty in 1942. After the war, he resumed teaching in Camden for a year and then continued his education at Cornell University, where he received a master’s degree in industrial education. He was a long-time resident of Camden and a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. He was active in the Kershaw County Historical Society, where he had served as president, and the Sumter Genealogical Society. He served as editor of the N.C.-S.C. Hemerocallis Society. He was an avid bird watcher, gardener and a collector of Indian relics. Survivors besides his wife include five nephews, Charles W. McGrew, Terrence McGrew, James McGrew, Steven McGrew, Dr. C.J. McGrew; two nieces, Gertrude Wilson and Jean Waldron; and grandnephews and grandnieces. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Quaker Cemetery with the Rev. Willie Parrott, 80, of Lynchburg Highway, husband of Ruth Gass Parrott, died Saturday, Sept, 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 4, 1920, in Elliott, he was a son of the late Harry Parrott and Rosa Chatman Parrott. Mr. Parrott accepted Christ as his Lord and savior in his youth and joined St. Paul United Methodist Church. As an adult, he became active in the United Methodist Men’s Ministry. He farmed for many years before his employment in 1966 with Burlington Industries, retiring in 1988 after 22 years. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, John Parrott of Fayetteville, N.C., and Carl Parrott of Wisacky; four daughters, Willie Mae Parrott Lisbon of Wisacky community of Lynchburg, Doristine Parrott Webster of Flint, Mich., Marie Parrott-Withers of Charlotte, N.C., and Ruth Parrott McCant of Mayesville; a brother, James Parrott of Philadelphia, Pa.; five sisters, Rosa McFadden of Wisacky, Annie Pogue of Valleydale, Md., Hollie L. Hanna, Carrie Gass and Joann Stuckey; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James Parrott; and two sisters, Alma Williams and Ethelene Wilson. Wake services will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wisacky before the funeral services. Earline James Praylow, widow of William N. Praylow, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 12, 1924, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Victoria Pinkney James. Mrs. Praylow attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and became a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church. After marriage, she joined High Hill AME Church. She was a dedicated church worker and was involved in many organizations including: Stewardess Board No. 1, class leader, senior choir, women’s missionary society, floral club and pulpit aide club. She was formerly employed by the then-Tuomey Hospital and later at Shaw Air Force Base. She spent much of her later years at the Delaine Community Center. Survivors include a son, Willie Praylow of Port Chester, N.Y.; a brother, Herbert W. James of Wedgefield; and a grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion James and Robert James Sr.; and three sisters, Ella Mae J. Walker, Victoria J. Taylor and Lessie Mae James. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at High Hill AME Church with the Rev. M.C. Ragin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GEORGE H. RAMSEY

George Harry Ramsey died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 12, 1941, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jessie Glisson and Jennie Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey attended Sumter County public schools and received an associate’s degree from Denmark Technical College in Denmark. He was employed for 27 years by Magazine’s Tailor Shop. After his retirement, he continued his work at home. Survivors include two sons, Brian and Darren Ramsey, both of Passaic, N.J.; three daughters, Deborah Ramsey, Diniah Ramsey and Brenda Ramsey, all of Sumter; two stepsons, Terry and Charles Swinton, both of Sumter; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a special friend, Melissa Bellamy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Chapel, 710 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Larry C. Weston officiating. Burial will be in Orangehill AME Cemetery in Wedgefield. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 122 Hoyt St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

GEORGE RIVERS

BRONX, N.Y. — George Rivers, 53, widower of Janette Ragin Rivers, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, N.Y. Born Feb. 13, 1947, in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the late Martha Rivers. Mr. Rivers attended Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, S.C. Survivors include three daughters, Loran Sandie Rivers, Audrey Rivers and Tameeka Cadell; a brother, Alfred Rivers; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Liberty Hill Church Road, Summerton, with the Rev. M.L. Duncan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother-in-law, Alberta Ragin, Route 3, Box 358, Lillie Martin Road, Summerton. Samuels Funeral Home in Manning, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

VERMELL H. AMOS

Vermell “Plum” Hasty Amos, 88, widow of John Henry Amos Jr., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 13, 1912, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Preston and Vermell Pearson Hasty.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Robertha Carter, 316 Wyoming Drive.
Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

WILLIE R. BRUNSON

Willie Reginald Brunson, husband of Inez Pringle Brunson, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 9, 1912, in Paxville in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. Ellison and Molly Brunson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1005 Truitt St.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

ELIZABETH W. EDWARDS

BALTIMORE, Md. — Elizabeth Wells Jackson Edwards died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, in Baltimore.
Born in Lynchburg, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Duffie and Lula Wells.
She was a sister of Larry Wells Sr. of Lynchburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greater Bethlehem Temple Church in Maryland.
Burial will be in Maryland.

HARTSVILLE — Lethia M. Hodges of 918 Robinson St. died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, after an illness.
The family will receive friends at the home of her nephew and his wife, Hubert and Margaret Montgomery, 908 Robinson St.

FLOYD PALMER JR.

Floyd Palmer Jr., husband of Dorothy Rush Palmer, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 14, 1937, in Dade County, Fla., he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Palmer Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home, 624 Manning Ave.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

WILLIE PARROTT

Willie Parrott of 1035 Lynchburg Highway, Lynchburg, husband of Ruth Gass Parrott, died Saturday evening, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
The family will receive friends at the home.
