DALZELL — Austell Anderson Davis Sr., 91, husband of Bernice Jeffers Davis, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his home. Born in Six Mile, he was a son of the late Warren Milton Davis and Cora Lee Barker Davis. Mr. Davis was a member of High Hills of Santee Baptist Church. He was a retired carpenter and cabinet maker. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, John W. Davis of Sumter, Austell A. Davis Jr. of Mauldin, Joe Davis of Conyers, Ga., and Frank Hendricks of Staunton, Va.; five daughters, Jean Shultz of Dalzell, Rebecca Lawson of Knoxville, Tenn., Martha Gilmer of Monticello, Ga., Chris Mullins of Conway and Glenda Davis of Decatur, Ga.; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Franklin officiating. Burial will be in High Hills of Santee Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and at other times at the home. RICHARD HOLLIDAY

Deacon Richard “Doc” Holliday, 70, husband of Lillian McNeill Holliday, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 12, 1930, in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Eli Holliday and Ella Lawson Holliday Ragin and stepson of the late Allen Ragin. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and joined Taw Caw Baptist Church in Summerton. After moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., in the early 1960s, he became a member of the First Calvary Baptist Church and was ordained a deacon in 1968. He was a professional glazer with Knickerbocker Glass Co. of New York City for 36 years. Survivors besides his wife of the home in Sumter include four daughters, Louvennia Anderson, Esther Holliday and Mabel H. Bennett, all of New York, N.Y., and Geraldine Holliday of Manning; two sons, Samuel McNeill of Garner, N.C., and Dr. Kamae McNeill of Rochester, N.Y.; two brothers, Robert Holliday of Miami, Fla., and Daniel Lawson of St. Stephens; three sisters, Shirlean Pearson of Baltimore, and Nora Lee Ragin and Esther Pearson, both of Summerton; 15 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Enon Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley E. Hayes, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sammie Simmons and Minister Georgia Walker, Minister Morris Graham and Minister Gregory Jackson. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Annie E. Fields Hutson, 65, wife of Henry F. Hutson, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Howard T. Fields and Annie Laurie Parnell Fields. Mrs. Hutson was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego. She was formerly employed by the Dragon Fly Co. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Henry F. Hutson Jr. of Alcolu and Theron K. Hutson of Sumter; two daughters, Wanda Hutson Boykin of Gable and Laurine E. Spencer of Sumter; a brother, Theron Fields of Lynchburg; five sisters, Mary Wadford and Ava Irick, both of Sumter, Rebecca King of Winnsboro, Miriam Fields of Bessemer City, N.C., and Louise Kinlaw of Bishopville; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, H.A. Fields. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego with the Rev. Michael Henderson and the Rev. Vince Halter officiating. Burial will be in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery. Jacqueline R. “Jackie” McLeod, 68, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at her home. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Varnie K. McLeod and Fannie M. Hodge McLeod. She was retired as the owner and operator of Carolina Ceramics. Survivors include a brother, Hughey F. McLeod of Riverview, Fla.; four sisters, Amberlee Geddings, Fannie D. Singletary and Alice Martin, all of Sumter, and Margie D. LaPierre of Redmond, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alene Geddings. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Don Riner officiating. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. COLUMBIA — Wallace Duncan Sheridan Jr., husband of “Lu” Nichols Sheridan, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Wallace Duncan Sheridan and Mary Ellen Evans Sheridan. Mr. Sheridan was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors besides his wife include a son and daughter-in-law, Wally and Janet Sheridan of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Saundra and Howard Hicks, both of Columbia; and two grandchildren, Scott Sheridan and Leigh Sheridan. HARTSVILLE — Elouise Thomas of 309 Jasper Ave., widow of Flag Thomas, died Thursday evening, Sept. 28, 2000, at her home after an extended illness. Born in the Wysacky community of Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Annie Flemming. She, along with her family, moved to the Hartsville community early in life. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, where she served on the usher board. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 233 in Hartsville. Survivors include a son, Frank (Diane) Thomas of Hartsville; a brother, Willie (Wilhelmenia) Virgin of Hartsville; two grandsons, Christopher Days and Franklin Days; and five nieces, Linda Bess, Geraldine (Jim) Zimmerman, Patricia Virgin, Cynthia Virgin and Crayona (Paxton) Simpson. Wake services were held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Centenary United Methodist Church. BISHOPVILLE — Pauline Moses Williams died Thursday evening, Sept. 28, 2000, at her home. Born Dec. 1, 1950, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Reese Moses and Mary McPherson Moses. She attended Lee County public schools and was a graduate of Dennis High School. She also attended Kings Business College in Charlotte, N.C. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Williams of Indianapolis, Ind.; a son, Emmitt Williams of Bishopville; a daughter, Erica Moses of Bishopville; a brother, Robert Moses Sr. of Irvington, N.J.; a sister, Dorothy Moses of Bishopville; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Holland, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Barnettsville Cemetery. MARION H. QUATTLEBAUM
(Sumterite worked abroad in oil industry)

A former Sumterite who spent his entire career in Venezuela while working in the oil industry, died on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, as a result of automobile accident injuries. Services were held last month for the late Marion Harley Quattlebaum, 72, in Maracaibo, Venezuela, his home for the past 41 years. A 1944 graduate of Edmunds High School, Mr. Quattlebaum was a son of the late Dr. Theodore A. Quattlebaum and Mary Harley Quattlebaum. Born in Columbia, he grew up in Sumter, where his father was the superintendent of the John K. Crosswell Home. After graduating in 1947 from Georgia Tech with a mechanical engineering degree, he moved to Venezuela to begin his career in the oil industry, specializing in the maintenance, servicing and inspection of all the pipelines of the major oil companies. He is survived by four children; a sister, Sarah Q. Castles; and three grandchildren.

Essie Mae Lowery Hampton Baker, 74, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 11, 1926, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Gamble and Cora Lowery. She was married first to the late Raleigh J. Hampton and then to the late Alfair Cottery Baker. The Rev. Bruce B. McDuffie, 78, husband of Rebecca Copeland McDuffie, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at his home. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late John W. McDuffie and Rosa Morris McDuffie. He was a member of Boulevard Church of the Nazarene. Rev. McDuffie was retired from Campbell Soup Co. and was also a retired minister, having pastored at Ashwood Church of the Nazarene and Pageland Church of the Nazarene. RIMINI — Burnice “Pig” Dow English died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Sept. 7, 1961, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Esaw Dow and Susan Ella Stephen Dow. She was a 1980 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton. She was employed at Thomasville Furniture Co. in Thomasville, N.C., for many years and most recently at V.B. Williams in Sumter. Early in life, she became a member of Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church. After confessing her faith in Christ, she recommitted her life to Him and attended services regularly. She was a team captain for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Survivors besides her parents of Rimini include a son, Patrick English of Sumter; two daughters, Lokesia Dow and Antiqunette Dow, both of Sumter; seven brothers, Charlie Dow of Thomasville, Henry Dow, Johnny Dow and Julius Dow, all of Baltimore, Md., Ranzy Dow of Washington, D.C., Ernest Dow of High Point, N.C., and Curtis Dow of Rimini; five sisters, Susan Samuel of Brooklyn, N.Y., Daisy McConico, Joe Ann Stukes and Jenice Dow, all of Sumter, and Susan Billie of Rimini; a special nephew, Quincy McConico; and other nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by a brother, Buster Dow; and a sister, Barbara Ann Dow. Robert Basil Winston Garratt Jr., 88, husband of Theresa H. Garratt, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Born March 14, 1912, in Nicqueri, Surinam, he was a son of the late Robert Garratt Sr. and Edith Helena Jordan Garratt. Mr. Garratt attended the public schools of Guyana. He graduated from the University of West Indies and was employed as a headmaster for the Department of Education in Guyana. Upon moving to South Carolina, he joined St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Wedgefield. Survivors besides his wife of the home in Pinewood include four sons, Laurence W. Garratt, Brian J. Garratt and Colin P. Garratt, all of England, and Roger A. Garratt of Pinewood; a daughter, Margaret H. Cenec of Pinewood; three brothers, Roland Garratt of Queens, N.Y., and Leyland Garratt and Horace Garratt, both of England; two sisters, Marjorie Backer of Georgetown, Guyana, and Unia Allen of Deltona, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Hendricks. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at Community Funeral Home Chapel, 353 Manning Ave., with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating. Marion Dewey “Papa” Newman, 69, widower of Evelyn Warner Newman, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at his home. Because he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Dewey is now in the presence of the Lord. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Marvin Mood Newman and the late Bobbie Yates Newman. Mr. Newman was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church and retired as a senior engineer with GTE Telephone with 42 years of service. Survivors include two sons, Whit Newman and his wife, Janet Newman, and Mark Newman and his wife, Sherry Newman; a daughter, Karen Newman; four brothers, Mood Newman, Marvin Newman, Billy Newman and Knox Newman, all of Sumter; two sisters, Bertha Ridgeway of Sumter and Frances Lewis of Laurinburg, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Heath Griffin, Whitney Newman, Stacie Newman, Stephanie Bryant, Heather Evans, Linda Newman and Becky Phillips, all of Sumter, and Shannon Newman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two great-grandchildren, Jared Bryant and MiKayla Gauthier; and a special friend, Sammy Jones. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Newman Griffin. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Crosswell Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Howard and the Rev. BALTIMORE, Md. — Deacon Leo Bowman, widower of Geneva Wilson Bowman, died Tuesday night, Sept. 19, 2000, at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. Born in Lee County, S.C., he was a son of the late James Bowman and Lela Franklin Bowman. Mr. Bowman was a member of Barnettsville Baptist Church in Bishopville, S.C., where he was chairman of the deacon board. He organized and was a member of the gospel choir. He attended Lee County public schools. He was former member of the PTA of Lower Lee Elementary and Mt. Pleasant High schools. He was a former member of the Lee County Board of Education. He was past worshipful master of Liberty Hill Masonic Lodge No. 357 and was a member of Marshall Chapter of Order of Eastern Star No. 239. Survivors include a son, Eugene Bowman of Mayesville; a daughter, Julia Chestnut of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Isaiah Chestnut and Phyllis Chestnut, both of Baltimore, Antwan Bowman of Houston, Texas, and Traci Bowman of Mayesville; a son-in-law, Isaiah Chestnut Sr. of Baltimore; and a daughter-in-law, Rosa Bowman of Mayesville. Catoe Cato. Mr. Cato was a member of the Salvation Army Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and he retired from Williams Furniture Co. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah C. McDaniel of Atlanta, Ga., and Della C. Barnes of Sumter; a brother, Harold Cato of Borden; two sisters, Gladys Houser of Camden and Mary Nelson of Winthrop, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Stacy R. SUMMERTON — Mary Martin “Tid” Davis, 82, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Hopewell Healthcare Center in Sumter. Born Dec. 29, 1917, in Ridgeland, she was a daughter of the late Charles Norman Martin and Helen Cantey Martin. Martin of Summerton; two sisters, Catherine Breazeale of Westminster and Helen M. Rice of Savannah, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Carolyn Arnemann of Florence and Mary Johnson of Waxhaw, N.C. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Jay Hammett officiating. Nephews will be pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. PAULINE R. HALEY

MANNING — Pauline Ridgeway Haley, 69, wife of Oliver C. Haley, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Aug. 7, 1931, in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Dickson and Octave Holliday Ridgeway. Mrs. Haley was a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Glen Haley of Manning; a daughter, Joyce Haley of Manning; a brother, Wayne Ridgeway of Manning; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Ridgeway; and two sisters, Vera Hodge and Virginia Strange. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Clarendon Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charlie Salter officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her son, Glen Haley, Bloomville Road, Manning. Memorials may be made to Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church or to a charity of one’s choice. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID L. HAM

David Lee Ham, 30, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at his home. Born Sept. 28, 1969, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Miller and Manda E. Ham. Mr. Ham attended Sumter County public schools. Survivors besides his parents include a son, Deon Jenkins of Sumter; a brother, Willie Ham of Sumter; and two sisters, Ella Mae Ham and Mary Ham McBride, both of Sumter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Miller Ham Jr. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with the Rev. Marvin Hodge officiating. Burial will be in Melina Cemetery. Ladies of the church will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 3:35 p.m. from the home, 701 Shephard St. The family will receive friends at the home. Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY M. MORGAN

Dorothy “Dot” Morris Morgan, 77, of Panama City, Fla., widow of Cecil Warren Morgan Sr., died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Jan. 1, 1923, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Robert Ezra Morris and Geneva Baker Morris. She moved to Panama City from Point Washington, Fla., 51 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Homemakers Sunday School Class. Survivors include two sons, Buddy Morgan and wife, Pauline, and Don Morgan, all of Panama City; three daughters, Joyce Ann Danley and husband, Buddy, of Lynn Haven, Fla., Rhonda Conrad and husband, Johnny, of White Western, Fla., and Pamela Hagler and husband, Frankie, of Southport, Fla.; a brother, Billy Morris and wife, Mary Ann, of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Mercella Hinton and husband, Tom, Elma Berry and Alma Ruth Berry and husband, Walter, all of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Gradi Morgan of Panama City; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James Ezra “Jimmy” Morris; four brothers, Tommy Morris and A.J. Morris, both of Manning, Russell Morris of Sumter and Robert “Buster” Morris of Newberry; and two sisters, Helen Casper of Rockledge, Fla., and Laura Mae Pigate of Timmonsville. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Northside Baptist Church in Panama City with the Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Burial will be in Point Washington Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Southerland Family Funeral Home in Panama City. Southerland Funeral Home, 100 E. 19th St., Panama City, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

DONTAY D. WALKER

Dontay D. Walker, 20, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000. Born Feb. 3, 1980, he was a son of Ruth Walker and Wayne Wilson. The family will receive friends at 409 W. Oakland Avenue. Funeral services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary.

APRIL M. MCKENZIE

MANNING — April Marie McKenzie, 20, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, in Clarendon County from injuries she suffered in a car wreck. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Sara Beth Burgess Godwin and Harvey H. McKenzie. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1998 at Living Word Christian School in Kingstree. She received an associate’s degree from Williamsburg Technical College and was attending Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga. She was a member of Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides her mother of Kingstree and father of Springfield, Ill., include a stepfather, Dan Godwin of Kingstree and a stepmother, Hope McKenzie of Springfield, Ill.; a sister, Candace Godwin of Kingstree; a stepsister, Amy Thomas of Orangeburg; grandparents, Jimmy Burgess, Laura Burgess and Doris McKenzie, all of Kingstree; and a great-grandmother, Serena Coward of Sumter. Funeral service will 3 p.m. Monday at Sandy Bay Pentecostal Church. Burial will be in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Williamsburg Funeral Home. JULIA M. ROSE

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Julia Margaret Rose, 84, widow of Leon E. Rose, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Houston Medical Center. Born Dec. 20, 1915, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Stephen Lee and Harriet Lee. Mrs. Rose was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Warner Robins, Ga., where she had served as a Sunday school teacher and on the choir. She was a former Girl Scouts of America co-leader and a volunteer for Houston County’s branch of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services. She was a World War II U.S. Navy Wave veteran. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Rose of Warner Robins, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Harry Hill will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery in Gable, S.C. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins, Ga. McCullough Funeral Home of Warner Robins, Ga., is in charge of arrangements. ELEANOR N. SMALLS BEAUFORT — Eleanor N. Smalls, widow of Isaac Smalls, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 1, 1918, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Janie Dicks and David Newman. Mrs. Smalls attended Sumter County public schools. She was a member of James Chapel Fire Baptized Holiness Church in Marion. She is survived by two daughters, Essie Davis of Beaufort and Marie Smalls Franklin of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Ann Smalls. The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Heritage Chapel in Sumter, with the Rev. Matthew Isaac officiating. Burial will be in Dicks Cemetery. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of funeral arrangements.
