OLANTA — Eula R. McDowell Redden, 82, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late John Rush and Maude McFadden Rush. Mrs. Redden was a member of Jordan Chapel Baptist Church, where she served as a choir member, missionary and usher. She was first married to the late Willow McDowell, and then to the late James Redden. Survivors include two sons, James McDowell and Thomas McDowell, both of the home; four daughters, Deborah Hannah of the home, Betty Canteen and Mary Gibbs, both of Olanta, and Mattie Lee Miller; a brother, Solomon Rush of Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Gladys Myers of Charleston and Ellen McFadden of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Jordan Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, U.S. 301 North, Olanta, with Elder K.L. Gibson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in New McFadden Cemetery. Green’s Funeral Home in Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

SIMON SEIGLER

Simon Seigler, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Hopewell Health Care Center. Born Jan. 1, 1911, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Doc and Ethel Kelly Seigler. In his youth, Mr. Seigler attended Orange Hill AME Church in Wedgefield. After moving to Sumter, he joined New Fellowship Baptist Church. Survivors include two brothers, Samuel Seigler of Sumter and Willie “Son” Seigler of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two sisters, Willie Mae Harvin and Mary Josey, both of Sumter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Seigler; and three sisters, Hattie Bell Seigler, Marie Seigler Choice and Elizabeth Seigler Gamble. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. L.W. Walker Sr., pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Orangehill AME Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Willie Mae Harvin, 1855 Bishop Drive. James Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM S. STRANGES

William S. “Billy” Stranges, 25, of Trussville, Ala., died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in Jefferson County, Ala., as the result of a swimming accident. Born Feb. 8, 1975, in Columbus, Ohio, he was a son of William Stranges and Janis English LeRoux. Mr. Stranges attended the public schools in Bellaire, Ohio, and was a 1993 graduate of Sumter High School. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, (Sempter Fidelis) Special Forces Reconnaissance Unit with tours of duty worldwide, including Europe, Asia, Middle East, Far East, South America and Cuba. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bellaire. He was a member of the award-winning Drum Corps of Sumter High School in Sumter. Survivors besides his father of Columbus, Ohio, and his mother of Pinewood include his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph English of Bellaire; his paternal grandmother, Marie Stranges of St. Clairsville, Ohio; his stepfather, Bill LeRoux of Pinewood; his stepmother, Elizabeth Miller of Columbus, Ohio; two stepbrothers, Billy LeRoux of Wedgefield and Andy LeRoux of Charlotte, N.C.; and a nephew, Trent LeRoux. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Marjorie Price English; his paternal grandfather, Nicholas Stranges; a niece, Becky LeRoux; and a nephew, Brian LeRoux. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home, Bellaire chapel, 441 37th St., Bellaire, Ohio, with the Rev. Thomas L. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Belmont County Memorial Park cemetery in St. Clairsville, Ohio, with full military honors conducted by the Belmont County Council of the American Legion. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held in Sumter at a later date. MARY WRIGHT

Mary Wright, widow of Willie Wright, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at her home. Born Jan. 1, 1911, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Sylvia Murray. Mrs. Wright was a former member of Stateburg Church and later moved her membership to Olden Chapel UME Church. During her years of service, she was a faithful member and also crown mother of the church. She was committed to God and her family, and her biggest joy was the love she shared with everyone. Survivors include a son, Rufus Wright of Sumter; a daughter, Rosa Dow of Sumter; a sister, Frances Gathers of Sumter; 38 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children, Jerry Wright, William Wright and Geneva Law. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Olden Chapel UME Church with the Rev. Michael Walker, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 118 Carver St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Edna Pridmore “Prid” Andrews, 83, widow of John H. Andrews Sr., died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at a Lexington nursing facility. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late George Levi Pridmore and Emma Johnson Pridmore. Mrs. Andrews was a member of Westside Baptist Church. She was a retired registered nurse, who had worked for Dr. Perry Davis in Pinewood and several area nursing homes. Survivors include two sons, John H. Andrews Jr. and his wife, Linda Andrews, of West Columbia, and William Michael “Mickey” Andrews and his wife, Gail Andrews, of Sumter; two brothers, Rudolph Pridmore and George Pridmore, both of Greenville; three grandchildren, Holly Rising and Heather Andrews, both of West Columbia, and Terry Smith of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. LAKE CITY — Lula Mae “Miller” Graham, 89, widow of Joe Graham Sr., died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late George and Annie Eaddy. Mrs. Graham attended Lake City public schools. She was a member of Mt. Clair Baptist Church, where she sang on the gospel and mass choir, and a member of United Order of Tent No. 112. Survivors include two sons, Joe Graham Jr. of Lake City and James Graham of Lane; a daughter, Queen Ester McKnight of Lake City; two adopted children, Phillip Graham and Shannon Graham; two sisters, Annie Bell Solomon of Lake City and Verlie Dawson of Danville, Va.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. MAPLE SHADE, N.J. — Julian B. Phillips Sr., 88, of Maple Shade, husband of Theodora C. Campbell Phillips, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Kennedy Memorial Hospital-University Medical Center in Cherry Hill, N.J. Born in Sumter, S.C., he lived in Bronx, N.Y., for 40 years and Moorestown, N.J., before moving to Maple Shade one year ago. Mr. Phillips had an electrical engineer’s degree and was owner of Julian’s TV in the Bronx. He was a courier for the State of New York for 10 years, a Boy Scouts leader and an avid golfer, with a hole in one in 1985. Mr. Philips was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Survivors besides his wife of 41 years include three sons, Craig C. Phillips of Wheaton, Md., Robert B. Phillips of Moorestown and Julian B. Phillips Jr. of Middletown, N.Y.; two daughters, Diane Phillips of Summerset, N.J., and Naomi P. Haughton of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Swan Lake Presbyterian Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. Ken Thomas officiating. BISHOPVILLE — Maxine Woods died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. Born July 8, 1958, in Mayesville, she was a daughter of Mason Woods and the late Olivia Melton Woods. She attended Lee County public schools and was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. She was employed by RTA for five years and was the owner of Max’s Sub Plus in Mayesville. Survivors besides her father of Bishopville include a son, Patrick “P.J.” Woods of Bishopville; eight brothers, Herbert Woods of Jersey City, N.J., Johnny Woods and Covell Woods, both of Mayesville, and Levi Woods, Jessie Woods, Alexander Woods, Harry Woods and Bobby Woods, all of Sumter; five sisters, Ruth McKnight of Columbia, Ruby Green of San Diego, Calif., Rosa Mae Woods of Philadelphia, Pa., and Shirley Woods and Annette Woods, both of Mayesville; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Everlina Bolden. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pleasant AME Church with the Rev. WACO, Texas — Carolyn Phillips Hendrickson, 68, of Waco died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at her home. Born March 13, 1932, in Lynchburg, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Phronie Dennis Phillips. Mrs. Hendrickson grew up in South Carolina but moved to Missouri in 1957 and lived there 40 years. She had been a resident of Waco the past three years. She retired from her position as director of Mental Health Services for Mid-Missouri Mental Health in July 1996, and she spent her life helping others through her profession. She was a graduate of Furman University and received a master’s degree in social work from Tulane University. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hewitt. The family would like to thank all of her friends who loved her and helped care for her during her extended illness. Survivors include two sons, Charlie Hendrickson and his wife, Diane, of Woodway and Carey Hendrickson and his wife, Stacie, of Arlington; two brothers, Keith Phillips and his wife, Virginia, of Lynchburg, S.C., and Ashton Phillips and his wife, LaVonne, of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Jane Hodge of Lexington, Ky., and Anna Chandler and her husband, Archie, of Bishopville, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Elina Phillips of Turbeville, S.C., and Eva Lou Farnham and her husband, Neil, of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren, Carissa, Drew, Jenna, Holly, Hunter and Zachary; and several nieces, nephews and countless friends. DAVIS STATION — Evelyn Pearson Pearson, 76, widow of Willie Pearson, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at her home in the Davis Station community of Manning. Born Sept. 12, 1924, in the White Oak community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Harris Pearson and Nora Dingle Pearson. Mrs. Pearson attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined New Light Baptist Church, where she sang on the gospel choir and was a diligent worker of the missionary society. Survivors include a daughter, Susie Mae Johnson of the home; four grandchildren she reared as her own, Glennie Junious and John E. Pearson, both of Manning, 1st Sgt. Willie L. Pearson of Taegu, South Korea, and Robert Pearson of Davis Station; and eight-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, James, Harry Jr., Hurie, Abie, Frank and Felix Pearson; two sisters, Mattie Parson and Pauline Miller; and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at New Light Missionary Baptist Church in the Davis Station community of Summerton with the Rev. Sam W. Whack Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Ocelia Blue, the Rev. Deloris Parker and the Rev. Clifford Gaymon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. SUMMERTON — Lois Jean Davis Pitstick, 74, widow of Richard Lee Pitstick, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility. Born Aug. 18, 1926, in Fairfield, Ind., she was a daughter of the late George and Dorothy Younts Davis. Survivors include a daughter, Janet McKee of Summerton; a brother, Noel Davis of Connersville, Ind.; a sister, Helen Eyestone of Champaign, Ill.; a stepson, Mike Trump of Richmond, Ind.; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Rosa Lee Dinkins Scarborough, wife of Zurie Scarborough, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at her home. Born in the Claremont community of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Marie Alston Dinkins. Mrs. Scarborough began her early Christian journey at Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where she remained loyal throughout her lifetime. She served in many capacities including member of the Senior Women’s Missionary Society, Stewardess Board No. 1, formerly crowned as Miss Mt. Pisgah AME Church and was first runner-up in many other fund-raising events. In 1942, she relocated from South Carolina to New York. While in New York, she was employed as a licensed practical nurse at Queens General Hospital for more than 25 years until she retired in 1982. In 1988, she returned to her native South Carolina. Survivors include her husband of Sumter. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with the Rev. Johnny N. Yeadon officiating, assisted by the Rev. Emma Thompson and the Rev. E. Robert Thomas. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 2271 Toxaway Drive. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Born June 28, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Richard A. and Robertha Reese Brunson.

JOHN M. BENNETT

KOKOMO, Ind. — John M. Bennett, 61, husband of Betty Ann Daniels Bennett, whom he married on Oct. 1, 1961, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at SCCI Hospital after a two-year battle with cancer. Born Dec. 12, 1938, in Tipton, Ind., he was a son of the late Chester C. and Dorothy E. Wilson Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a 1956 graduate of Kokomo High School and later received a college degree in finance/accounting. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-1964. He worked for Milbank Manufacturing in Kokomo and retired from Target Corporation. He was a former member of Bible Baptist Church in Kokomo, and a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church in Columbia, S.C., where they had lived for the past 10 years. They moved back to the Kokomo area in September 1999 to be near their children and grandchildren. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Albert C. Bennett of Tipton, Ind.; two daughters, Sharon D. Price of Tipton and Teresa M. Mooney of Russiaville, Ind.; his father-in-law, Thomas W. Daniels of Manning, S.C.; three brothers, Richard Bennett of Brevard, N.C., William Bennett of Dalton, Ga., and Lawrence Bennett of Burke, Va.; a sister, Jane Cassis of Kokomo; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John M. Bennett Jr.; a brother, Ronald Bennett; and a sister, Rosina Bennett. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stout and Son Funeral Home in Russiaville, Ind., with Pastor Greg Reed officiating. Burial will be in Albright Cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and also one hour before the service on Wednesday. Stout & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
