Herbert Lee Gilliam

Herbert Lee Gilliam, 70, of 236 Bedford Way, Prosperity, SC formerly of Newberry, died at Lexington Medical Center, Tuesday, September 13, 2005.
Mr. Gilliam was born in Newberry, a son of the late Lonnie B. and Ora Lee Bridges Gilliam. He was a member of the S. C. National Guard for 23 years and a member of the 246 Army Band. He was a retired high school band director. While at McDuffie High School in Anderson, the school marching band under his direction won over 50 1St Place Trophies and was invited on three occasions to participate in the Mardi Gras Parade.
Mr. Gilliam was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church, the Neal Truesdall Sunday School Class, Amity Masonic Lodge # 87, the S. C. Music Educators Association, the S.C. Retired Teachers Association, a member and Past Patron of the Newberry Chapter No. 226, Order of the Eastern Star.
Mr. Gilliam is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby A. and Maree H. Gilliam of Lexington and Ralph and Barbara M. Gilliam of Alpharetta, GA. He was predeceased by a sister, Doris Jean Armfield and a brother, Willie Robert Gilliam.
Funeral services for Herbert Lee Gilliam will be conducted at 11:30 A.M. Saturday at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. George Day. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be Friday from to 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.

Elizabeth Ballentine Long

Elizabeth Ballentine Long, 94, of 22858 U. S. Highway 76, Newberry, widow of Harold F. Long, died Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Long was born on January 24, 1911, in Lexington County, a daughter of the late John A. and Carrie Corley Ballentine. She was a graduate of Winthrop College Class of 1933 and taught fourth grade in Newberry County Schools for 24 years having taught at Park Street Elementary School in Whitmire, Bush River School in Newberry, O’Neal School in Prosperity, Little Mountain School in Little Mountain, and Hartford School in Newberry. Mrs. Long married Harold F. Long in 1939 and they were married for 52 years. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and received a plaque for the care of the communion set at St. James for 48 years. She was an active participant in the operation of the family farm in the Jalapa community of Newberry, SC, and was recognized for her contributions to agriculture by the Clemson University Extension Service.
Mrs. Long is survived by a daughter, Suzanne E. Long of Columbia; a son, John F. Long of Irmo; a sister, Emma Julia Sease of Newberry; a brother, J. William Ballentine of Newberry; two grandchildren, John Christopher Long of Washington , DC and Emily Maureen Long of Charleston. She was predeceased by three sisters; Mary Lou B. Reeves, Virginia B. Crosson and Gladys B. Long.
Funeral services for Elizabeth Ballentine Long will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church by the Rev Rodney Gunter. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will at the residence, 22858 U. S. Highway 76 and will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 P. M., Thursday at Whitaker Funeral Home

Joseph Fabel Harps

Funeral services for Joseph Fabel Harps, Colonel (U.S. Army, Retired) of 2454 Chappells Highway, Chappells, SC will be conducted 3:00 P.M. Sunday, September 11, 2005 at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry and the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. Sunday. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at the Kellersville Methodist Church in Kellersville, PA.
Colonel Harps died on September 8, 2005. He was born on May 25, 1918 in Manchester, North Carolina, a son of the late George Allen and Sidney Hesley Harps. He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University, the Executive Program of the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago where he received a Master’s of Business Administration.
As a career Army Officer, he was graduated from the Air Tactical School, the Ordinance School, and the Command and General Staff College. His early service was as an Ordinance officer at Morris Field, Columbia Army Air Base, V Air Service Area Command, and the IX Troop Carrier Command. During World War II he participated in the Luzon, New Guinea, and Philippine Liberation campaigns and commanded the 2112th Ordinance Battalion. His other overseas tours of duty included a tour of duty in West Germany and two tours of duty in South Korea. Stateside, he served on the Department of the Army General Staff, the Eighth U.S. Army General Staff, and as an Inspector General of the United States Army. His awards and decorations included the Army General Staff Identification Badge and the Legion of Merit.
Colonel Harps is survived by his wife, Popie Helen Harps, of Chappells, a son, Joseph Patrick Harps, daughter-in-law, Ellenor McCaughrin Harps, a granddaughter, Sidney Hesley Harps, and a grandson, Patrick McCaughrin Harps, all of Alpharetta, Georgia and many others who knew, admired and loved him.

Bertie Ruth Amick Hawkins

Bertie Ruth Amick Hawkins, 96, widow of H. Bates Hawkins, of 1655 Fire Tower Rd. Prosperity, died Saturday, September 3, 2005 at the White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Hawkins was born December 17, 1908 in Lexington County, a daughter of the late Bennett L. and Elizabeth Fulmer Amick. She was the oldest member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church and Lula Hunter Circle. She was retired from Old School Manufacturing Co.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by a son, Paul L. (Anne) Hawkins of Prosperity; a brother, Boinest Amick of Prosperity; two grandchildren Pam H. (Harvey) Brown of Lexington and Kent (Bess) Hawkins of Prosperity; and four great-granddaughters, Caitlin Brown and Erica Mathis of Lexington, Mindy Hawkins and Jessica Hawkins of Columbia.
She loved her family and her church. Her hobby was quilting for family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Lukes Lutheran Church by Rev. Art Hallman. Interment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the home of Paul and Anne Hawkins, 1619 Fire Tower Road, Prosperity and will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Azilee Amick Hawkins

Azilee Amick Hawkins, 94, widow of Lawrence Hawkins, died Thursday, September 1, 2005 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Hawkins was born February 26, 1911, in Lexington County, a daughter of the late
Bennett L. and Lizzie Fulmer Amick. She was a retired employee of Prosperity Manufacturing Company. She was the oldest living member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Adult Sunday School Class and the Leisure Club of Faith Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by four daughters and two son-in-laws, Dorothy H. Havird, Kathren and James Lee Mills and Mary H. and Mickey Haltiwanger all of Newberry, and Ann H. Metts of Prosperity; a son and daughter-in-law James L. and Elaine S. Hawkins of Newberry; a sister Bertie A. Hawkins of Prosperity, a brother Bonniest Amick of Prosperity; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by a grandson, Randy Haltiwanger and two son-in-laws, Edwin D. Havird and Glenn Metts.
Funeral services for Azilee A. Hawkins will be conducted 4:00 P.M. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev. Charles Aurand and Rev. Floyd Sides. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the home of Dorothy Havird, 2312 Mayes Ave., Newberry, and will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home.

Julia Myers Floyd

Julia Myers Floyd, widow of Dr. John “Jack” Spearman Floyd, III, entered into eternal rest Saturday, October 29, 2005.
Born in Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Charlotte Roberts Myers. She lived her early years in Charleston, SC, graduating from Bishop England High School and St. Francis Xavier Hospital School of nursing.
After marriage to Dr. Floyd, they spent several years at Barber’s Point Naval Station, Hawaii, Great Lakes Naval Station, and Charleston Naval Base while Dr. Floyd was serving his country with the United States Navy. They remained in Charleston where she worked for many years with Dr. Floyd in his private practice. Moving to Newberry in 1983, she continued to assist him with his practice. Following his death in 1989, she eventually returned to nursing and was employed for several years with J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home until her retirement in 2000. Her remaining years were spent residing in Silverstreet with her son Frank.
Mrs. Floyd is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Steven Gaines (Charlotte) of Columbus, Ohio and daughter Julia Ann F. Serio of Newberry; two sons John S. Floyd, IV of Prosperity and Frank M. Floyd and his fiancée, Brandi L. Hill of Silverstreet; 11 grandchildren; Rebecca, Christopher, Daniel, and Eric Gaines, Matthew, Timothy, Nicole, Joseph, and Lucy Floyd, Jonathan and Ashley Serio; one great-grandchild Britlyn Serio; one brother; Beaufort Myers of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and a sister; Martha M. Thiel of New Orleans, LA.
The family also wishes to gratefully acknowledge her caring and compassionate hospice nurse, Richard Cates.
Services for Julia Myers Floyd will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at Trinity United Methodist Church by Rev. Hugh Bickley. Entombment will be at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of Frank and Brandi, 1139 Main St., Silverstreet, SC.
Pallbearers will be Franklin Joseph Floyd, Jonathan Anthony Serio, Christopher Thomas Gaines, Daniel Reichart Gaines, William Clary Floyd, Jr., and Matthew Wayne Floyd.

Christian Keith and Riley Keith, infant children of M. Chris. and Tasha Crumpton Keith, died Sunday, October 23, 2005 at the Richland Palmetto Hospital.
Besides their parents of Newberry, they are survived by their maternal grandparents, Theresa Burkhalter of Whitmire and Mike and Kathy Crumpton of Whitmire; paternal grandparents, Kathy and Eddie Prather of Newberry and Michael R. Keith of Jonesville; maternal great grandparents Betsy Crumpton of Whitmire and the late Thomas L. “Chris” Crumpton and Bobby and Ellen Burkhalter of Newberry; paternal great grandparents, Janie Brown of Newberry and the late Alvin York “Bill” Brown and Jack and Grace Keith of Union; and maternal great great Grandmother, Martha Attaway of Greenwood.
Graveside funeral services for Christian Keith and Riley Keith will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Horace Weathers.
