Woodrow Wilson Baker Jr., 62, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Woodrow Wilson Baker Sr. and Eula Stafford Baker. Mr. Baker was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was formerly employed by Osteen Davis. Survivors include a nephew, the Rev. Mendle Baker of Lancaster; two nieces, Lynn Christmas and Debbie Mitchum, both of Sumter; and a sister-in-law, Eunice J. Baker of Sumter. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Mendle Baker officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Eunice J. Baker, 209 N. Wise Drive. Otis E. Boykin, 65, husband of Nancy Elizabeth Boykin, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Dalton Boykin and Pearl Coulter Boykin. Mr. Boykin was employed by Crescent Tool Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a daughter, Sharon Benhart of Augusta, Ga.; three stepsons, Edward Charles Rogers and Jeffrey Alan Rogers, both of Sumter, and James Bruce Coulter of Bishopville; a stepdaughter, Tricia Ward of Sumter; a brother, Paul Boykin of Lancaster; two sisters, Bessie Rogers of Cullman, Ala., and Lola Mae Howard of Columbia; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill, Gary, James and Pat Boykin; and a sister, Rosie Bartlette. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Bowman officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and at other times at the home, 10 Marilyn St., Lot 2. SUMMERTON — Marie C. Dyson, 92, widow of Leon Dyson, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility. Born April 20, 1907, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Cornelia Bryant Corbett. Mrs. Dyson was a retired LPN. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Wayne Wells of Sumter and Jean Gibbons of Columbia; four grandchildren, Chris Wells, Carlos Gibbons Jr., Leeza Gibbons and Cammy Gibbons; and nine great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Wells and the Rev. Mark Altman officiating. MANNING — Omaree Dior Holliday, infant daughter of Orrick Holliday and Deidre Mack Holliday, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She was born Aug. 24, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Survivors besides her father and mother of Santee include her maternal grandparents, Edward and Lena Mack Sr. of Manning; her paternal grandmother, Laura Holliday of Queens, N.Y.; her maternal great-grandmothers, Leola W. Bennett and Susie Mack, both of Manning; and her paternal great-grandmother, Susie Holliday of New Jersey. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today at Bennett’s Cemetery, S.C. 261 East, Kingstree Highway, Manning, with Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg officiating. GEORGE E. LINTON

George E. “Big Boy” Linton died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 24, 1939, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James A. Linton Sr. and Ellen Lewis Linton. Mr. Linton attended Sumter County public schools. He was employed at Georgia Pacific, Sumter County Public Works and at the time of his death, Fast Eddie Car Wash. He was a member of the Church of God By Faith. Survivors include two brothers, Richard M. Linton of Spark, Nev., and Zack A. Linton of Florence; four sisters, Estelle Efferson of Sumter, Minnie Cooper of Silver Springs, Md., Mary Russ of Orange, N.J., and Daisy Potts of East Orange, N.J.; and aunts, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five siblings, Hannah Lee Linton Daney, Ida Mae Patterson, Susan Emma Linton Dukes, Juanita Linton and James Linton Jr. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God By Faith with Dr. E.P. Livingston, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Allen Stephen Potts, Elder C.P. McBride, Elder Thomas Davis and Dr. Leon Winn. Burial will be in Mt. SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Edna White, 88, wife of Roney White, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Health Center. Born Aug. 15, 1915, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John Henry Zimmerman and Martha Ann Singleton. Mrs. White attended the public schools in Sumter, S.C. She was a member of Bread of Life Church of God in Christ and formerly of Community Baptist Church in Sumter. Survivors besides her husband of Syracuse include eight daughters, Martha White, Bertha King and Alice Lorenzo, all of Buffalo, N.Y., Betsy Mickens and Lucile Lacy, both of Syracuse, Brenda Brye of Bronx, N.Y., and Rosa Lee White and Maggie Green, both of Sumter; two sisters, Gladys Moore of Charlotte, N.C., and Thelma Danois of Newark, N.J.; 29 grandchildren; 92 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Louise Coleman. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Bread of Life Church of God In Christ in Syracuse. Born Sept. 12, 1924, in the White Oak community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Harris Pearson and Nora Dingle Pearson. She was the mother of Susie Pearson Johnson. CHARLESTON — Maxine Woods died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital. Cornelia Wilson Colclough of 3460 U.S. 15 South, widow of Chandler Colclough, died Friday evening, Sept. 15, 2000, at her home. Born Jan. 24, 1910, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James and Eva S. Wilson. Mrs. Colclough attended Sumter County public schools. She was employed for more than 35 years with Julian and Lucy Buxton and family. She was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully until her health failed. She was a member of Missionary Circle No. 1, a member and past treasurer of the senior usher board and was a member of the usher board choir and the adult Sunday school. Survivors include a nephew she reared as her son, Hazel Wilson and his wife, Rosa Wilson, of Sumter; two nieces, Francis Russell of Los Angeles, Calif., and Maxine Stanley of Ansonia, Calif.; four adopted grandchildren, Jacquline Barnes and Frederick Wilson, both of Columbia, Vernon Wilson of Sumter and Edward Wilson of Bronx, N.Y.; an adopted great-grandchild, Chelsea Wilson of Columbia; and an aunt, Marian Spann of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Wilson; and three sisters, Amy Ford, Jimmie Lee Toney and Edna Singleton. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie A. Wright, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. John Johnson and the Rev. Alex Davis, 82, husband of Inez Virginia Spears Davis, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 20, 1918, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Eugene Davis and Carrie Shaw Davis. Mr. Davis attended Lee County public schools. He retired after 33 years at Williams Furniture plant. He had been a member of Bethel AME Church since 1956, where he served on the trustee board until his health declined. He was a member of UFWA Local 273, AFL-CIO. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Alex Davis Jr.; two daughters, Rose Lee Odom of Richmond, Va., and Vivian Huey of Columbia; three sisters, Victoria Lucas of Portsmouth, Va., Fannie Marcus of Philadelphia, Pa., and Maggie Taylor of Sumter; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel AME Church, Calhoun Street, with the Rev. R.E. Galloway officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Blassingame and the Rev. D.L. Grant. MANNING — Elease Dixon Smith, 82, widow of Walter Smith, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after a brief illness. Born Oct. 10, 1917, in the Davis Crossroad community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Fladger Dixon and Frances Billups Dixon. Mrs. Smith attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined New Light Baptist Church in Davis Station. After her marriage, she joined Elizabeth Baptist Church. Later, she joined Fellowship Baptist Church in Manning, where she served faithfully. Survivors include a daughter, Doreath Smith of the home; a grandson, Marques Smith of the home; and four sisters, Lucille Whitfield and Margie Miller, both of Manning, Bertha Felder of Miami, Fla., and Sarah Andrews of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a son. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Baptist Church, West Huggins Street, Manning, with the Rev. Born Dec. 28, 1919, in Claremont, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Dinkins and Maria Alston Dinkins. The family will receive friends at the Scarborough residence, 2271 Toxaway Drive, Sumter. Billy Leon Barrineau, 46, husband of Mildred Chatham Barrineau, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Rose Nell Floyd Price and the late Ira L. Barrineau. Mr. Barrineau was a member of Edisto Baptist Church and attended Grace Baptist Church. He was scout master of Boy Scout Troop No. 86 and a former Royal Ambassador leader. He was employed by the S.C. Department of Social Services for 20 years. Survivors besides his wife and mother, both of Sumter, include two sons, Richard Bryan Barrineau of Clemson and Daniel Alexander Barrineau of the home; a daughter, Rebecca Arlene Barrineau, of the home; and a brother, Bobby Wayne Barrineau of Irmo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Glenn Barrineau. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Grace Baptist Church, with Dr. James Chandler officiating. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Harris and the late Olivia Parnell Harris. Mrs. Beasley was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Elliott. Survivors include two sons, George Beasley of Bishopville and William L. Beasley of Texas; three daughters, Olivia Baker and Mary Watford, both of Bishopville, and Anna Moseley of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. SUMMERTON — Charlie “Bo” Palmer, 78, husband of Rosa Mae Bowman Palmer, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born May 1, 1922 in Summerton, he was a son of the late Isaac Palmer and Hager Green Palmer. Mr. Palmer was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a lifelong member of Oaks AME Church in the Oaks community of North Summerton, where he served in various capacities. He was a member of Spring Hill Lodge No. 188. He was employed as a machine operator at Santee Cooper until his retirement. Survivors besides his wife of the home include seven sons, Bobby Montgomery of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Palmer of Washington, D.C., Windell Palmer and Eddie Lee Palmer, both of Summerton, Thomas Palmer and William Palmer, both of Newark, N.J., and Harold Johnson of Pinewood; nine daughters, Willean Taylor of Miami, Fla., Henrietta Tindal, Sarah Jones, Patricia Richardson, Carolyn Johnson, Sandra Maddox, George Ann Johnson and Victoria Ortiz, all of Summerton, and Janice Martin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Cecilia Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Henrietta Richardson of Summerton; 67 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Oaks AME Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Huggins, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. MANNING — Melvin “Tim” Wade Sr., 62, husband of Margaret Dingle Wade, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at his home. Born July 14, 1938, in Manning, he was a son of the late George Wade Sr. and Lestine Bell Gordon Wade. Mr. Wade attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning Training School. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and became a member of the trustee board, usher board, senior choir, gospel choir and mass choir. He was also a member of the Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge No. 99. He was employed at People’s Store in Manning, Georgia Pacific in Alcolu and retired from Korn Industries in Sumter. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Melvin Wade Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Danette Ward of Manning; four adopted children, Patricia Pringle of Maryland, Gregory Pringle and Georgette Rivers, both of Columbia, and Richard Pringle of Lancaster; a brother, Clarence Wade of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Willie B. Wright of Los Angeles, Calif., and Gladys Bethea of Manning; and five grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Andrew Wade, two sisters, George Anna Brasey and Mary Ellen Pringle. NEW HAVEN, Conn. — James Lee Sweat Sr., 45, husband of Charyl Reid Sweat, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Saint Raphael Hospital in New Haven. Born Sept. 5, 1955 in Manning, he was a son of Willie Mae Blanding Sweat and the late James Lucious Sweat. Mr. Sweat received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning High School. He also attended Sumter Technical College. He was employed by Sargent Manufacturing Company for 13 years. At an early age, he joined Mount Zero Baptist Church in Manning. After relocating, he became a member of First Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, James L. Sweat Jr. of the home, and Lambert Sweat and Christopher Weeks, both of Manning; a daughter, Amanda Sweat of the home; three brothers, James Edward Sweat, Adam Sweat and Albertus Sweat, all of Manning; four sisters, Martha Mae Sweat and Minnie Frierson, both of Manning, Clara Wilson of New Haven, Conn., and Margaret Scott of Alcolu; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother, China Sweat. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville Highway, Manning, with the Rev. MANNING — Henry Walter Ridgeway, 85, husband of Reginald Ridgeway, died Friday Sept. 15, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born June 15, 1915, in the Wilson community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late John Walter Ridgeway and Elizabeth Jane Tobias Ridgeway. Mr. Ridgeway was a retired grocer and a member of Union United Methodist Church at Wilson, near Manning, and was first married to the late Violet Lucille Ridgeway. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, John Francis Ridgeway of Manning, Roy Olen Ridgeway of Hardeeville and Alva Timmons Ridgeway Sr. of Sumter; a daughter, Catherine Ridgeway of Manning; a brother, George Ridgeway of Columbia; two sisters, Mae Gamble and Elizabeth Holliday, both of Manning; three stepsons, Durham Stone and David Stone, both of Manning, and Woody Stone of Myrtle Beach; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union United Methodist Church at Wilson, near Manning, with the Rev. George Gain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Timmons, W.L. Watts, Wayne Shiver, Glenn Stone Jr., Jody Stone and Elwood Stone. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, Manning, and other times at the home of Catherine Ridgeway, Route 3, Box 986, Bloomville Road, Manning. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

VERNON L. DIGGS

Vernon Lee Diggs died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 3, 1939, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Blease Dinkins and Ida Mae Diggs.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Bertha Dinkins, 5615 Stage Coach Road, Rembert.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

ANNIE LOU BENENHALEY

Annie Lou Benenhaley died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

GILBERT FRANKLIN

BISHOPVILLE — Gilbert Franklin died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Faith Nursing Care.
He was born in Lee County.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Easter Franklin, 2-G Woodside Apartments.
Services will be announced by Boatwright Funeral Home.

LEROY MACK

BISHOPVILLE — Leroy Mack, 54, husband of Georgia Mack, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Mack was born Oct. 15, 1945, in Lee County.
The family will receive friends at the home, 44 Hawthorne Court.
Services will be announced by Boatwright Funeral Home.
