TAMPA, Fla. — Isreal R. “Billy” Singleton, 47, husband of Lillian Nelson Singleton, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at his home in Tampa. MANNING — Elease Dickson Smith, 88, widow of Walter Smith, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 10, 1911, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Fladger Dickson and Frances Billups Dickson, mother of Doretha Smith and sister of Margie Miller. NEW HAVEN, Conn. — James Lee “Boone” Sweat Sr., 45, husband of Cheryl Reid Sweat, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven after a sudden illness. Born Sept. 5, 1955, in Manning, S.C., he was a son of Willie Mae Blanding Sweat and the late James Lucious Sweat. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 119 Bradham St., Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning, S.C.

MANNING — Melvin “Tim” Wade Sr., 62, husband of Margaret Dingle Wade, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at his home after an illness. Born July 14, 1938, in Manning, he was a son of the late George Wade Sr. and Lestine Bell Gordon Wade. COLUMBIA — Josephine Wright died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at her home in Columbia. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Carrie Frierson and the late Myson Frierson. MANNING — James Cousar, 65, died Sunday morning, Sept. 10, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after an illness. Born March 4, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James Cousar Sr. and Phyllis Burgess Cousar. Mr. Cousar attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he became a member of Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, where he served faithfully until his health declined. He was a self-employed painter for many years. Survivors include six sons, Robert Cousar, John Mack Cousar, Roney Cousar and Joe Nathan Scott, all of Manning, Allen Cousar of Greenville, and James Junior Cousar of Dallas, Texas; five daughters, Betty Cousar, Gentha Cousar and Gloria Ann Andrews, all of Decatur, Ga., Carolyn Cousar of Manning and Jacqueline Jackson of College Park, Ga.; three grandchildren he reared in his home as his own, Rodney Cousar, Shontella Cousar and Catrina Cousar; a brother, Joseph Cousar of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Viola Sweat of Philadelphia; and 31 additional grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Melina Presbyterian Church, USA, U.S. 527 West, Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating. HARMON W. NEWTON JR.

CAYCE — Harmon Wesley Newton Jr., 77, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000. Born in Bennettsville, he was a son of the late Harmon Wesley Newton Sr. and Marguerite Jones Newton. Mr. Newton was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Sumter, retired owner of Town and Country Cleaners and a pilot in the Army/Air Corps in World War II with the rank of first lieutenant. He was first married to the late Margaret Segars Newton, and then to the late Evelyn Garvin Newton. Survivors include a son, Harmon W. Newton III of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Gerry Newton Sanders of Columbia and Patricia Newton Taylor of Sumter; and three grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today in Sumter Cemetery in Sumter with Dr. Jimmy Adams officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Thompson Funeral Home in West Columbia is in charge of arrangements.

DORLAND RAMEY

ENID, Okla. — Dorland Ramey, 79, widower of Katherine A. Hawkins Ramey, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center in Enid. Mr. Ramey grew up in Abilene, Kan., and following high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged on Dec. 29, 1945. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served 29 years. He served in the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Berlin Air Lift. Following his discharge from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant, he was employed by Northrup from 1973 until he retired in 1991. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Abilene, Kan., Retired Air Force Sergeant Association and the International Machinist and Aerospace Workers, Local 888. Survivors include three sons, Dee Ramey of Sacramento, Calif., Jay Ramey of Abilene, Kan., and Patrick Ramey of Denison, Texas; eight daughters, Kay Chadbourne, Elaine Ramey, Barbara Palmer, Doris Ramey and Linda McNew, all of Enid, Cynthia Harwood of Abilene, Verna Peterson of Wichita, Kan., and Carol Grubb and her husband, Keith, of Sumter, S.C.; a brother, Dwane O. Ramey of Athens, Tenn.; 24 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, John and Joseph; and three grandchildren, Sara Ramey, Joey “Pooter” Ramey and Amy McNew. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Henninger-Allen Funeral Home with the Rev. Melvin Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Enid Cemetery with military honors by Vance Air Force Base. Henninger-Allen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ALVIN L. WELDON

COLUMBIA — Alvin Londell Weldon, 27, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 16, 1972, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Blease Weldon and Sarah Mae Lemon Weldon. Affectionately called “Londell” by family and friends, Mr. Weldon was reared in a Christian home with loving parents. He attended the public schools in Clarendon and Sumter counties. Survivors include a daughter, Jardaisha Clark of Sumter; two brothers, Blease Weldon Jr. and Robert Weldon, both of Sumter; and four sisters, Lawral Richburg and Floree Joe, both of Sumter, and Carrie Lee Weldon and Jacqueline Weldon, both of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Fellowship Baptist Church, Huggins Street, Manning, with the Rev. Melvin Daniels officiating, assisted by the Rev. George Johnson and Deacon A. Jackson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. The funeral procession will leave at 2:45 p.m. from the home, 61 Carrol Drive, Sumter. Vernon Lee Diggs died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Mr. Diggs was born July 3, 1939. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Bertha Dinkins, 5615 Stage Coach Road, Rembert. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

Lillie “Sweet” Evans Pearson, 79, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 26, 1921, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Sallie Robinson Evans. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Edna Evans, 650 Loring Mill Road. HENRY S. LOGAN JR.

Henry Spencer Logan Jr., 44, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Hopewell Health Care Center. Born Oct. 20, 1955, in Sumter County, he was a son of Hattie Logan Wilson and the late Henry Logan Sr. and the stepson of Joe E. Wilson. Mr. Logan attended Sumter County schools and graduated from Furman High School in the class of 1975. He was employed as a truck driver for 24 years. He was married to the former Carolyn Hill, and they had two children. Survivors besides his mother and stepfather of Pinewood include a son, Tracy Spencer of Sumter; a daughter, Spec. Renee Spencer, U.S. Army Reserve, of Sumter; two brothers, Douglas Logan of Washington, D.C., and Albertis Bowen of Manning; and two sisters, Sgt. Maj. Mary Lou Logan Aurtrey (U.S. Army retired) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mary Emma Logan of Flushing, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Enon Baptist Church in Pinewood with Pastor Stanley E. Hayes Sr. officiating, assisted by Pastor Nathan Amos, Minister M. Graham and Minister Maurice Wells. Burial will be in Calvary Baptist Church cemetery in Pinewood. Sadie Pendergrass died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Hopewell Health Care Center. Born June 14, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leavy Pendergrass and the stepdaughter of Flora Redden. Survivors besides her stepmother of New Zion include a brother, David L. Pendergrass of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Alma Mouzon of New Zion, Willie Ruth Pressley of Sumter and Dorothy Adams of Charlotte, N.C.; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Job’s Mortuary with the Rev. Larry C. Weston officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. CAMDEN — Kitty Sandifer Shiver of the Pisgah community, 85, widow of C. Marion “PoBoy” Shiver, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000. Born in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Monnie Lee and Wilhelmina Smith Sandifer. Mrs. Shiver was former co-owner and office manager of Shiver Implement Co., a University of South Carolina class of 1936 alumnus and a member of King Haigler Garden Club and Pisgah Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Judie S. Shiver of Pisgah and Jean S. Green of Camden; six grandchildren, DeeBo Kelly, Clint Baxley, Stephanie Batten, Kitt Ray, Aimee Ray and Wade Green; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Libby Shiver. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pisgah Baptist Church with Dr. Donald West and Dr. Gene Rollins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. KINGSTREE — Elizabeth Tisdale Burrows, 76, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in a local hospital. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Ellen Tisdale Morris. Mrs. Burrows attended Williamsburg County schools and was a retired merchant. She was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was first married to the late Jack E. Burrows, and then to Eddie Marsh. Survivors include two sons, Jack Burrows of Sumter and Joe Burrows of Salters; four daughters, Jane Wheeler of Scranton, Barbara Ann McCutcheon of Lake City, Odetta Cantey of Hemingway and Carolyn Rodgers of Kingstree; three sisters, Nellie Mims of Kingstree, Bobbie Taylor of Andrews and Elma Mills of Macedonia; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Williamsburg Funeral Home. UNION — Reginald Claude Chewning, 66, husband of Rose T. Chewning, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at his home after a sudden illness. Born May 11, 1934, in Manning, he was a son of Reginald and Rounette McCabe Chewning. Mr. Chewning was a graduate of Clemson University, Class of 1956, where he received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He was a retired engineer with Carlisle Finishing plant. Survivors besides his wife of Union and his parents of Manning include a son, Kenneth Chewning of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Jeanie Hewitt of Manning; two nephews; and a niece. He was preceded in death by a son, Reginald Claude Chewning Jr. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Van Edington officiating. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Tommy Sherbert, George Ashmore, Kenneth Peigler, Stanley Wells, Joey Nichols and Vernon Atkinson. HARTSVILLE — Geneva Caples Harris, 94, widow of Ruben Harris, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Louise Deas Caples. Mrs. Harris was a member of Soul Harbor Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include three sons, J. Willard Harris of Florence, Roy Harris of Hartsville and Don Harris of Lamar; four daughters, Juanita Hatchell of Darlington, Alpha James and Dot Amerson, both of Hartsville, and Linda Fountain of Lamar; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Harris; a daughter, Ruby H. Marshall; and a grandson, Philip Amerson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ann Chavis and the Rev. Marvin Griggs officiating. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens. Margaret L. London, 84, widow of Denson M. London, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Providence Northeast Hospital in Columbia. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late William E. Lawrence and Jannie Bowers Lawrence. Mrs. London was a member of Sumter Bible Church. She retired from McLellan’s Dime Store. Survivors include a son, Bill London of Columbia; a daughter, Barbara J. Brunson of Pinewood; a sister, Mary K. Lawrence of Sumter; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Houtz officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.
