COLUMBIA — Alvin Weldon died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 16, 1972, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Blease and Sarah Mae Lemmon Weldon. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Carrie Weldon, 61 Carrol Drive, Sumter. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter.

Jocena “Jo” Kemmerlin Mims, 85, widow of James Thaddeus Mims, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Kemmerlin and Lettie Lucretia Kemmerlin. Mrs. Mims was a charter member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, where she worked with the youth department for 40 years and was a member of the UDC. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Mims Chewning and her husband, C. Fred Chewning, of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Alderman Mims of Sumter; a sister, Mattie Dukes of Orangeburg; three grandchildren, James Paul Mims of Myrtle Beach, Paige C. Hembree and her husband, David Hembree, of Lakeland, Fla., and Hunter Chewning of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her only son, James Samuel Mims. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alice Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Mims, Hunter Chewning, David Hembree, Cray Weeks, Rodney Harrelson and Edgar DuRant. Ryan Jackson Pitts, 18, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Grace Jackson Karvelas and William Carroll Pitts. Ryan previously attended Thomas Sumter Academy for six years and was currently a senior at Wilson Hall, where he was a member of the varsity football team and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Survivors besides his mother and stepfather, James Karvelas, of Sumter and his father of Sumter include a brother, Jeremy Haynsworth Pitts of Charleston; a sister, Allison Elliott Pitts of Sumter; and his maternal grandmother, Emma Jean Ragsdale Jackson of Sumter. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Haynsworth Pitts, and his maternal grandfather, Phillip Wade Jackson Sr. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church with his cousin, the Rev. Herbert James Williams III, the Rev. Drew Choate and Phillip W. Jackson Jr., headmaster of Thomas Sumter Academy and uncle of Ryan, officiating. Personal comments will be made by the coaching staff and students from Wilson Hall and Thomas Sumter Academy. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Survivors include a son, Clay Reece and his wife, Tricia, of Sumter; two sisters, Pearl Greene of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Maude Gilliam of Atlanta, Ga.; and a grandson, Bryan Reece. MANNING — Edna Owens Perry, 77, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born July 16, 1923, in Knoxville, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Harrison Owens and Mabel Hinton Owens. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Manning and the Fidelis Sunday school class. Survivors include her husband, William Haun Perry of Manning; three daughters, Jean Kelly and her husband, James, of Sanford, N.C., Elaine Tatum and her husband, Robert, of Garner, N.C., and Cheryl Staab and her husband, Ken, of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Manning, with Dr. David O. Anderson Sr. officiating and Dr. William J. Holmes assisting. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Manning Lion’s Club. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church and other times at the home, 110 Meadow Drive, Manning. CHARLESTON — Robert C. “Jeff” Riley, 46, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Born Jan. 28, 1954, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Washington Riley and Juanita Fulton Riley. He received his formal education at Walker-Gamble Elementary School and graduated from Burke High School in Charleston. He was a member of Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston. Survivors include four aunts, Sara Poindexter of Alexandria, Va., Evelyn Daniels of Detroit, Mich., Jmetta Riley of New Zion, and Mary Fulton of Kingstree; and a cousin who was reared as a sister, Jonell McFadden of New Zion. Services will be noon Monday at Lodabar AME Church, S.C. 527 East in New Zion, with the Rev. Jerome McCray officiating and the Rev. I.B. Herbert, pastor, assisting. David R. Carrasco Sr., 45, husband of Cruz Martinez Carrasco, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a son of the late Gilbert Carrasco and Dominga Ramirez Carrasco. Mr. Carrasco was employed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, David R. Carrasco Jr. and John Gilbert Carrasco, both of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Christina Hernandez of San Antonio, Texas; two stepsons, Jay Lopez of San Antonio, Texas, and Joe Lopez of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Maria Haughton of Sumter, and Amanda Lopez and Christina Garcia, both of San Antonio, Texas; four brothers, Gilbert Carrasco Jr., Daniel Carrasco, Joe Andrew Carrasco and Carlos Carrasco; three sisters, Helen Diaz, Yolanda Klebahn and Patricia Vasquez; 13 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Woodrow Coker, 86, husband of Ruth Parker Coker, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at his home. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Minnie Coker. Mr. Coker was a member of Meadowbrook Church of God and was retired from Georgia-Pacific Co. Mr. Coker married twice, first to the late Perlie Floyd Coker, then to Ruth Parker Coker of Manning. Survivors besides his wife include four sons, W.J. Coker, H.E. Floyd, Son Floyd and Eldridge Floyd, all of Sumter; five daughters, Beulah Mae Fulton, Jackie Coker, Evelyn Brinson, Janice Lee and Cleo Gainey, all of Sumter; two stepsons, G.K. Timmons and David Timmons; two stepdaughters, Beth Dickerson and Betty Welch; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 4 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with the Revs. Tim Henderson, James Snipes and Mark Huggins officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery. Erica Lynne Granke Smith, 30, wife of Tommy L. Smith, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in Dallas, Texas, following an automobile accident. Born Oct. 17, 1969, in Erie, Penn., she was a daughter of Arnie Granke and Cindy Bullington Granke of Sumter. She was raised in Sumter, where she graduated from Sumter High School. Later, she moved to Ohio and then to Kingston, Okla., in 1999. Mrs. Smith worked as a teacher’s assistant for Kingston Elementary School and was a member of the Church of Christ in Sumter. Survivors besides her husband of Kingston, Okla., include two daughters, Brittnie Viscounte of Ohio and Lyndsey Smith of Oklahoma; a son, Aaron Viscounte of Ohio; a brother, Mark Granke of Sumter; and a sister, Tanja Groenen of Holland. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Enos Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lyndol Adams officiating and R.T. Brundige assisting. Burial will be in the Russett Cemetery. Edward “Boy” Holmes, widower of Annie Mae Kelly Holmes, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Hopewell Healthcare Center in Sumter. Born Dec. 12, 1917, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Joseph Holmes and Hettie Coleman Holmes. Mr. Holmes was educated in the public schools of Lee County. He attended Mechanicsville UME Church at an early age and later joined Wayman Chapel AME Church. He was a maintenance worker with WilJohn Williams and was a farmer. Survivors include a brother, Eddie Lee Holmes of Charlotte, N.C.; and two sisters, Annie Mae Belton and Rebecca Wright of Brooklyn, N.Y. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Freddie Holmes and Holland Holmes; and two sisters, Azalee Mark and Ruth Gathers. Services will be 4 p.m. Monday at Wayman Chapel AME Church, with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard, pastor, officiating and the Rev. John Platt assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery. JEFFERSONVILLE, Ga. — The Rev. Thomas Carstarphen Sr., husband of Lorraine Carstarphen, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Springs of Living Water Bible Camp in Jeffersonville, Ga. He was the founding pastor of Community Bible Church in Warner Robins, Ga., and the Spoliwa Bible Church in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the executive director of SPOLIWA Ministry. Many children throughout the Southeast attended the Bible camp Carstarphen founded more than 25 years ago in Jeffersonville, Ga. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Thomas Carstarphen Jr. and Jeremiah Carstarphen; three daughters, Carolyn Aaron, Darlene Florence and Charlotte Thompson. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Tabernacle Building of SPOLIWA Bible Camp in Jeffersonville, Ga. Burial will be in Memorial Garden in Jeffersonville, Ga. Born March 24, 1946, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Carl Huie Morris Sr. and Louise Evans Morris. Morris was a welder and pipe-fitter. He was a member of Greelyville Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of New Zion include two sons, Lannie Morris of Kingstree and Dean Morris of Sumter; a daughter, Carla Morris of New Zion; a brother, James Mouzon of Kingstree; two sisters, Toni Klinger of Orangeburg and Barbara Calhoun of Andrews; and five grandchildren. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Willie Rudd, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in San Puerto Rico. Born Sept. 22, 1944, in Sardis, Miss., he was a labor leader and was greatly involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Survivors include four daughters, Linda Rudd-Hiller, Jacklyn Rudd, Anita Rudd and Leslie Rudd; eight brothers, Arthur J. Rudd, Charles Rudd, James Rudd, Foster Rudd Jr., McKinley Rudd, Clarence Rudd, Sammie Rudd and Glenn Rudd; and a sister, Mary Rudd. A wake service will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at M.J. Martha James Ford, widow of Leo Ford, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at her residence. Born Nov. 26, 1916, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin James and Mrs. Rebecca Sharpe James. Mrs. Ford attended the public schools of Sumter County. She began her Christian journey at the St. Paul AME Church and later worshiped at Beulah AME Church. The remainder of her life was spent as an active member of St. John Pentecostal Holiness Church. For more than 50 years, she served as a deaconess and missionary, and a member of the usher board, gospel choir and the Willing Workers Club. Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Ford of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James Ford of Columbia; three daughters, Leola F. Sumpter of Sumter, and Loutricia Susan Ford and Martha F. Hodge, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Robert James of Washington, D.C.; 15 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnie Ford; two brothers, Phelp James and Stephan James; two sisters, Maggie Dobson and Lubirdie James. Services will be held at 2 p.m. at St. John Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Joe Mack, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Church Cemetery. MANNING — Alvin Jackson, 46, of Manning, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his home, 116 Reardon St., Manning, after a sudden illness. Born Feb. 17, 1954, in Manning, he was a son of the late Ingram Jackson and Edna Ruth Major Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning High School. He also attended Voorhees College in Denmark, S.C., Williamsburg Technical College in Kingstree and Central Carolina Technical College. Survivors include three brothers, Johnny Lee Jackson of Lake City, and Joe Jackson and Leroy Jackson, both of Manning; and a sister, Julia Mae Abraham of Philadelphia. Herbert Leo Cabbagestalk, 44, husband of Selinda Richburg Cabbagestalk, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in Sumter. Born Jan. 28, 1956, in Sumter, he was a son of Elijah Pearson and Ellen Cabbagestalk Pearson. Mr. Cabbagestalk was a 1974 graduate of Hillcrest High School in Dalzell. In his youth he joined Mt. Olive AME Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the senior steward board, lay organization, senior usher board and Sons of Allen. He was a past president of Ebenezer Community Center and a dedicated parent of any Crestwood activity. He was employed with V.B. Williams and Korn Inc. for over 25 years. Survivors besides his wife and his parents include a daughter, Latasha Cabbagestalk; two brothers, Elijah “Mack” Cabbagestalk and Alpha Cabbagestalk, both of Sumter; and seven sisters, Eliza Cabbagestalk, Emma Cabbagestalk, Rebecca Cabbagestalk, Mary Ellen Cabbagestalk, Jacquelyn Cabbagestalk Russ and Monica Pearson, all of Sumter, and Omega Cabbagestalk Randolph of Brunswick, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Olive AME Church with the Rev. T.A. Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson. Burial will be in Colclough Cemetery. Betty Kathleen Blackmon Green, 63, wife of William H. Green, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Chester Ford Blackmon and Zelma Couch Blackmon. Mrs. Green was a member of Bible Fellowship Church. She was a retired secretary for Washington Mutual Financial Services. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a daughter, Judy Dunlap of Sumter; two brothers, Donald Blackmon of Ocala, Fla., and Steve Blackmon of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; five sisters, Thenia Beard of Turbeville, Sara Bazzle of Charleston, Hazeline Hill of Florence, Edith Aldrich of Ft. Wayne and Carolyn Truesdale of Camden; three grandchildren, Scott Dunlap, Chris Dunlap and Ashly Barrett; and a great-grandson, Tyler Barrett. She was preceded in death by a brother, J.W. Blackmon, and a sister, Margaret Holliday. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Whitehead, the Rev. Jim Grasty Jr. and the Rev. Morris Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Warren Carraway, Allen Dantzler, Smokey Fickling, Ronnie Grooms, Chuck Porter, Wyman Taylor and Daniel Rowland. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home, 326 Oswego Road. Memorials may be made to Bible Fellowship Church. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ELDER CHARLES J. HORTON

SUMMERTON — Elder Charles J. Horton, 78, husband of Gloria Perez Horton, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at his home in Summerton. Born March 11, 1922, in Kershaw, he was a son of the late Jim Horton Sr. and Daisy Steward Horton. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Charles Horton Jr. of Petersburg, Fla., and Ralph Horton of Islip, N.Y.; a daughter, Linda Crowl of Brentwood, N.Y.; a brother, Richard Horton of Wingate, N.C.; three sisters, Mae Frances Raley of Charlotte, N.C., Minnie McCoy of Jersey City, N.J., and Nola D. Robinson of Monroe, N.C.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at the Open Door Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ with Elder Dwayne Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery in Long Island, N.Y. The family will receive friends at the home, P.O. Box 335, 29 Wassau St. Dyson’s Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.
