Mary L. Madison died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Beth Israel Hospital in New York, N.Y.
Born Dec. 13, 1948, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late George and Mary Taylor Madison.
She was a 1968 graduate of Manchester High School in Pinewood, S.C.
She was employed for the visiting nurse service in New York City.
Survivors include a brother, George L. Madison of Pinewood; and five sisters, Dorcus Self, Josephine P. Arrington and Alma Jordan, all of Richmond, Va., and and Ruth Madison and Lillie M. White, both of New York City.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Hope UME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Leroy T. James, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charlie Thomas.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 70 Area Road, Pinewood.
Community Funeral Home in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

NORMAN PACK

BALTIMORE, Md. — Norman Pack, 58, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Bon-Secure Hospital in Baltimore. Born June 5, 1942, in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the late Nathan Carpenter and Willie Montgomery. Mr. Pack attended Manchester High School in Sumter. As a man on an adventure, he relocated to Baltimore, Md., in search of employment. He was gainfully employed at Barco Rebuilders until he accepted a position with Tate Engineering Co. Survivors include a son, Maj. George Earl Pack of Fort Meade, Md.; three daughters, Valerie Pack of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Tracy Stewart and Stacy Williams, both of Sumter; eight sisters, JoAnn Montgomery-Dickerson of Columbus, Md., and Carolyn Delegal, Judy Montgomery, Beatrice Montgomery, Rosemary Davis, Crystal Davis, Debra Abernathy and Cathy Montgomery, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a devoted companion, Emma Wilson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Sumter with the Rev. James Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Dennis Stewart, 1609 Crowndale Drive. MINOLA P. RICHARDSON

FLORENCE — Minola Price Richardson of Purvis Drive, 88, widow of Taylor Wilson Richardson who died in 1967, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Nichols, she was a daughter of the late John Waycon and Minnie Dozier Price. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the church circle, the birthday club and was a longtime volunteer for McLeod Regional Medical Center. She retired from Florence Manufacturing Co. Survivors include a son, Donald T. Richardson of Florence; two daughters, Jessie R. Purvis of Sumter and Nellie R. Avin of Florence; two brothers, Jack Price and Laurie Price, both of Darlington; two sisters, Miriam Causey of Dillon and Iris Clara Dowling of Lamar; nine grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial will be in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Avin, 2413 S. Purvis Drive. LAKE CITY — Belton Singletary, 83, widower of Maggie Burgess Singletary, died Sunday, June 18, 2000. Born in St. Stephen, he was a son of the late Moses Singletary and Ella Brayboy Singletary. Mr. Singletary was retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. in Winston-Salem, N.C. Survivors include two sons, Vander Singletary of Lake City and Woody Singletary of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six daughters, Margaret Peterson and Mary Joe Johnson, both of Bronx, N.Y., Lottie M. Brayboy of Scranton, Annie Dell Montgomery and Shirley Jean Singletary, both of Lake City, and Margaret Ann Singletary of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Henry M. Singletary of Philadelphia, Pa., and Sam Singletary of Lake City; a sister, Margaret Chandler of Lake City; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethlehem Baptist Church on McClam Road with the Rev. Joe D. Graham officiating. Burial will be in Goodwill Cemetery at Kingstree. MANNING — Cheyenne Space Sr., husband of Saran Teal Space, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, in Clarendon County. Born Feb. 1, 1958, in Manning, he was a son of Eugene Space and Lucile Cantey Space. Mr. Space attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Macedonia Baptist Church. He lived in Newark, N.J., for several years and was employed by Mann Kraft Inc. for 12 years. While in Newark, he attended Little Rock Holiness Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a son, Cheyenne Space Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Pamela Young of Manning; six brothers, Ralph Space, Thomas Joe Space, Chester Space, Allen Space and Raymond Space, all of Manning, and Eugene Space of Hemingway; and two sisters, Phyllis Adger and Diane Evans, both of Manning. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Space. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Bloomville with the Rev. Jonathan Mouzon officiating, assisted by the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, the Rev. David Anderson, the Rev. Curtis Cantey and Elder Joe Cantey. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery. BISHOPVILLE — Vernice Canty, wife of Ernest Robinson, died Saturday, June 17, 2000.
Born June 28, 1960, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Canty and Daisy Bell Atkinson Canty.

Sallie Riley Chatman, 77, widow of David Chatman Sr., died Tuesday evening, June 20, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born Oct. 16, 1922, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Riley Sr. and Diana Amos Riley Washington.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Alva Ingram and Ruth Barkley Ingram. Mr. Ingram was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was retired from Sumter Casket Co. He was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Johnny S. Ingram Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Melissa DuBose of Sumter; and a brother, Leslie “Buddy” Ingram of Sumter. Born Aug. 18, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Woodrow Johnson and Inez Jones Johnson. Mr. Johnson attended Clarendon County public schools and graduated from Scott’s Branch High School, Class of 1964. He served in the U.S. Army for three years. He was employed at Santee Carrier of Holly Hill. He was a member of Briggs Chapel Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Summerton and his parents of Summerton include a son, Reginald Johnson of Sumter; a daughter, Rhonda R. Johnson of Summerton; five brothers, Ronald Johnson of Sumter, Michael Johnson and Donte Johnson, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Dwayne and Alfonzo Johnson, both of Summerton; and three sisters, Claudia Johnson of Trenton, N.J., and Janice Sheerie Wilder and Jacquelyn Moses, both of Sumter. CLARISY H. ARCHER

BROADALBIN, N.Y. — Clarisy Hastie Archer, 75, wife of Odion Archer, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at her home, 116 Archer Road in Broadalbin. Born March 20, 1925, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank Hastie Sr. and Emma Pearson Hastie. Mrs. Archer attended Bracey School in Sumter County before moving to Baltimore for a short time. She then moved to New York in 1946, living in Brooklyn and Queens before moving to Broadalbin in 1971. She was employed in many positions and was a skilled seamstress. Mrs. Archer and her husband owned and operated the former Archer’s Grove, a motel, restaurant and family resort in Broadalbin since 1970. She retired in 1985 due to illness. In her youth, she joined New Bethel Baptist Church. After moving to Broadalbin, she received an award for community service to the People’s AME Zion Church and the community in Gloversville. Survivors besides her husband, whom she married in 1947, include two daughters, Dolores Archer Patterson of Raleigh, N.C., and Lillian Archer Johnson of Broadalbin; five brothers, Murray Hastie of Broadalbin, Frank Hastie Jr., Wilson Hastie and Calvin Hastie, all of Sumter, S.C., and John Henry Hastie of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alexander Hastie and Woodrow Hastie Sr.; and a sister, Eva Evelena Hastie Harvin. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service in Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, U.S. 15 South, Sumter, with the Rev. W.A. Wright, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Haynesworth Cemetery. REMBERT — Patricia Emily Rollins “Patsy” Carmichael of 37 Wannah Plantation Lane, 50, wife of John Harllee Carmichael Jr., died Tuesday, June 20, 2000. Born in Atlanta, Ga., she was a daughter of Sam Rollins Jr. and Clarise Robertson Rollins. Mrs. Carmichael was a commercial artist, a volunteer for the National Kidney Foundation, a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and a former Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed outdoors and wildlife, drawing and painting, and was an avid gardener. She taught children’s art classes at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. She was also a Paul Harris Fellow and a graduate of Mercer University, Atlanta campus. Survivors besides her husband and her parents of Simpsonville include a stepdaughter, Kathleen Elizabeth Carmichael of Columbia; a sister and brother-in-law, Gloria R. and Thomas E. Batson of Simpsonville; two nieces, Kimberly B. Garvilla and Shannon B. Terry; a nephew, Thomas E. Batson Jr.; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Camden, with the Rev. James Crowley officiating. Burial will be in Quaker Cemetery. Thomas Chatmon, husband of Almeta Eaddy Chatmon, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at his home. Born Dec. 25, 1925, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Robert and Margaret Portlock Chatmon. After becoming a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church, Mr. Chatmon was actively involved with the board of trustees and the male chorus. He will be fondly remembered for providing parking assistance at the church. In 1998, he was presented a certificate as elder statesman. He attended Goodwill School in Lee County. His work experience included the logging industry, B.F. Goodrich, Lee Glover Service Station and retirement from Frasier Tire Service. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include three sons, Marion Chatmon of Rembert, Daniel Chatmon of Columbia and Albert Chatmon of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two daughters, Lois Hasan of Columbia and Shirley Lockhart of Miami, Fla.; a stepson, Samuel Eaddy of Rochester, N.C.; three brothers, Porter Chatmon of Washington, D.C., and Robert Chatmon and William Chatmon, both of Sumter; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. A wake will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Wayman Chapel AME Church in Stateburg with the Rev. Laddie N. Henry Arthur Davis, 62, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Aiken Regional Medical Center in Aiken. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jack Lee Davis Sr. and Mary Compton Davis. Survivors include two brothers, Jack Lee Davis Jr. of Wedgefield and John Edward Davis of Seaside, Calif.; three nieces; and two nephews. Richard Eva, 72, husband of Alice Bryant Eva, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at his home. Born in Tamaqua, Pa., he was a son of the late Thomas Eva and Annie Couch Eva. Mr. Eva was a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant with 20 years of service and a World War II and Korean veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Richard Thomas Eva of Pennsylvania and Billy John Eva of Sumter; a brother, Robert Eva of Pennsylvania; a sister, Margaret Gallagher of Pennsylvania; and four grandchildren. WOODRUFF — Henry Herbert Waddell of 100 Poplar St., 81, husband of Ruth Vaughn Waddell, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at his home following a brief illness. A native of Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late Broadus S. and Eva Johnson Waddell. Mr. Waddell served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a Christian and a member of Northside Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was very active in the Sunday school and training union. Having worked with Abney Mills for 43 years, he was a retired superintendent in the weave room department. He was an employee with Lanford Funeral Home. He was a member of Bethel Masonic Lodge No. 112, a past master since 1943, and chaplain for the past 10 years. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons and daughters-in-law, Carroll and Sandra Knighton Waddell of Sumter and Phillip and Rita Burke Waddell of Chesnee; a brother, Charles Waddell Sr. of Woodruff; a sister, Louise Waddell of Woodruff; three grandchildren, Stephen Waddell of Goose Creek, Paul Waddell of Brunswick, Maine, and Christy Garaux of Charlotte, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Waddell, Matthew Garaux and William Garaux; and two step-great-grandchildren, Jeremy Hopkins and Derrick Hopkins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ervin Waddell and James Waddell; and two sisters, Eunice Waddell and Margaret Morris. Masonic rites will be held at 6:30 p.m. prior to visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lanford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Lanford Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Spencer, the Rev. Bob Phelps and the Rev. Carroll Waddell officiating. Burial will be in Greenpond Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church Building Fund, 464 Woodruff St., Woodruff, SC 29388, or Hospice Special Need Fund, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Lanford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CLARISY H. ARCHER

BROADALBIN, N.Y. — Clarisy Hastie Archer, wife of O.D. Archer, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at her home, 116 Archer Road.
Born March 20, 1925, in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank Hastie Sr. and Emma Pearson Hastie.
The family will receive friends at the homes of her brothers, Wilson and Willie Hastie, 2920 Tindal Road, Sumter; and Frank Hastie Jr., 535 Frank Hastie Road, Sumter.
Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc. in Sumter, S.C.

VERNICE CANTY

BISHOPVILLE — Vernice Canty, wife of Ernest Roberson, died Saturday, June 17, 2000.
Born June 28, 1981, in Lee County, she was a daughter of Edward Canty and Daisy Bell Atkinson Canty.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the home, 100 Price Lane.
Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS CHATMON

Thomas Chatmon, husband of Almeta E. Chatmon, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at his home. Born Dec. 25, 1925, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Robert and Margaret Portlock Chatmon. The family will receive friends at the home, 734 Maney St. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

Born August 18, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Woodrow Johnson and Inez Jones Johnson.
