Rosa Marion Williams died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1912, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Mamie Sharper Williams.

ORANGEBURG — Jessie Mae Bell Justice, 89, widow of John H. Justice, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Central Carolina Nursing Home in Columbia. Born Sept. 12, 1910, in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Lizzie Weeks Bell. Mrs. Justice was a former member of Manning First Baptist Church. She attended St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Orangeburg. Survivors include two sisters, Margie R. Bagnal of Manning and Eunice R. Owen of Shallotte, N.C.; a nephew, James E. Bagnal Jr. of Cayce; and a niece, Nell Bagnal Price of Kingstree. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today in Manning Cemetery with the Rev. William L. Selman Jr. officiating. LAKE CITY — Helen McFadden Player, 78, widow of Arthur Player, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born May 31, 1921, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Henry McFadden and Jane Gamble Player. Mrs. Player attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth she joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Turbeville. Survivors include five sons, Luke Player of Vidalia, Ga., Thomas Player of Olanta, Sammie Lee Player of Sumter, Luther Player of Turbeville and James Albert Player of Manning; seven daughters, Mary Ellen Pressley and Helena Wilson, both of Wilmington, N.C., Mary Francis Fleming of the home, Elizabeth Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa., Ann Prince of Olanta, Lillie Mae Ham of New Zion, and Martha Jane Caldwell of Elizabethtown, N.C.; a granddaughter she reared as her own, Lisa Smith of New Zion; a sister, Rosa Lee McKenzie of Turbeville; 51 additional grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children; Blake Player, Ruby Mae Miller and Janie Ruth Player; three brothers; and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Zander Davis, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Alfred Smalls, the Rev. Lucious Wheeler and Minister Donald Lowery. Burial will be in the church cemetery. JOHN S. WARNER

John Spencer Warner, 77, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Conway Hospital in Conway. Born in Washington, N.C., he was a son of the late Blum DeWitt Warner and Ethel L. Troublefield Warner. Mr. Warner was a retired U.S. Marine Corps technical sergeant with 20 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He also retired from Civil Service at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base with 19 years of service. He was a Mason, Shriner and a member of the VFW. Survivors include a brother, Merrill D. Warner of Nashville, Tenn.; and two sisters, Ethel W. Rickard and Betty Rickard, both of Sumter. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Rodney Howard and the Rev. Steve E. Rohrlack officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. He was born June 28, 1925, in Clarendon County.

SILVER SPRINGS, Md. — Bernice Williams Hughes, 68, widow of John Hughes, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Montgomery General Hospital.
Born July 9, 1931, in Jacksonville, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Lovell Williams and Inez Davis Williams.
She was the niece of the late Wilhelmenia Davis English.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning, S.C.

FRANKLIN G. DAVIS

MULLINS — Franklin Gilbert Davis, 79, husband of Polly Shelley Davis, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence after an illness. Born July 26, 1920, in Marion County, he was a son of the late Charlie W. Davis and Lela Walker Meares Davis. Mr. Davis was a retired maintenance engineer from the Mullins Hospital and also was a retired farmer. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 89 and the VFW Post No. 6122. He was a former councilman with Mullins City Council. He was affiliated with the Boys Scouts of America for more than 30 years. Mr. Davis was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Hut Sunday School Class. Survivors besides his wife of Mullins include two sons, Joseph Franklin Davis of Sumter and Michael Wayne Davis of Loris; three brothers, the Rev. William D. Davis and Marvin Davis, both of Columbia, and Charles Warren Davis of Cheraw; two sisters, Lucille D. Campbell of Columbia and Lela D. Rodgers of Chuluota, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cox-Collins Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Lewis McCormick and the Rev. Susan Hampton Richardson Geddings, widow of Richard A. Geddings Sr., died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born May 26, 1912, in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Richard C. Richardson and Margaret Sullivan Richardson. A graduate of Pinewood High School, she received her teacher’s degree through correspondence and summer courses at several colleges. She was a teacher and principal of schools in Sumter District 2 for 20 years. She later worked at the Sumter County Board of Voter Registration and the Sumter Treasurer’s Office. She was a longtime member of St. Marks Episcopal Church in the Sandhills near Pinewood, and later joined Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was a member until her death. Survivors include a son, Richard A. “Buddy” Geddings Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Susan G. Cousar of Sumter and Jean G. Timmons of Hartsville; two sisters, Jean R. Alderman of Sumter and Sarah R. Brogdon of Columbia; nine grandchildren, Starr G. Austin, Martha G. Poston, Susan C. Smith, Richard P. Timmons and Richard A. Geddings III, all of Sumter, Julie C. McGuire of Anderson, Amanda G. Richards of Simi Valley, Calif., and Margaret T. Sowell and Eddie Timmons, both of Hartsville; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry B. “Punch” Richardson and Joseph R. Richardson; and two sisters, Margaret R. Patton and Maintzie R. Hyman. Donald Ray Head, 58, husband of Linda Slaton Head, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Aaron Head and Mabel McGuffin Head Griffith. Mr. Head was a member of Harmony Church, chairman of the board of South Carolina Automatic Merchandising Association, chairman-elect of Atlantic Coast Expedition and a past member of Palmetto Rotary Club. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Jeffrey Aaron Head of Myrtle Beach; and two grandchildren, Payton Head and Lauryn Head. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Bill Griffith. Hubert Jordan Hill, 79, husband of Lena Jones Hill, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Cartersville, he was a son of the late Hollis S. Hill and Lillie Jordan Hill. Mr. Hill was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Boyle Bible Class. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired watchmaker and repairman from Hill and Smith Watch Repair after 39 years of service. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Hugh Hill and his wife, Ellen, of Sumter; and two grandsons, David and Brian Hill. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold E. Hill and Charles E. Hill. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sumter Cemetery with Dr. James Adams officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. DON O. MOORE

Don Osborne Moore, 64, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at his home. Born Sept. 4, 1935, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Melvin and Daisy Boyce Moore. Mr. Moore was a graduate of Sumter High School. He retired from the Veterans Administration hospital and was employed in nuclear medicine. Survivors include two sisters, Jewel Coburn of Sumter and Geraldine O’Neal of Rockingham, N.C.; a niece, Jewel Marcoux of Sumter; and five nephews, Jack, Jerry, Steven, Randy and Scott Burke, all of Sumter. BISHOPVILLE — Ora Lee Moore, wife of Ollie Moore, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at her home after a long illness. Born Dec. 8, 1908, in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Patterson and Carrie Thorne Patterson. Mrs. Moore was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Survivors besides her husband of the home include a daughter, Ruby Butler of Philadelphia, Pa.; four granddaughters, Ora L. Moore and Willia Neloms, both of Philadelphia, Harry Young of Sumter and Myra Butler of the home; two great-grandsons, Brandon and Terrence Butler; and two great-granddaughters, Shanda and Sierra. WILLIE NIXON

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Willie “Nick” Nixon, husband of Diane Miles Nixon, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at his home in Washington, D.C. Born Oct. 23, 1954, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late Frank and Mamie Ruth Nixon. He was reared in a Christian home. He later joined a mosque, where he continued to develop his religious practices. He attended the public schools in Washington, D.C., and did further studies at Arch Trade School, where he received training to become a certified carpenter and bricklayer. He was employed by numerous companies doing interior renovations on Washington, D.C.’s Aging Housing Stock. Survivors besides his wife of the home include five children, Jerusha Baugh, Willie Nixon Jr., Furman Jones, Tamara Jones and Tiron Jones, all of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Barlinda Wade of Spartanburg, S.C., Helen Smith and Cynthia Brown, both of Summerton, S.C., and Earlene Balls of Manning, S.C.; and six grandchildren. THELMA TAYLOR

ALCOLU — Thelma Wilder Bennett Taylor, 48, died Sunday morning, June 11, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born April 3, 1952, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Eddie Wilder Sr. and Margaret Durant Wilder King, and the stepdaughter of the late Joe King. She was reared by her aunt and uncle, the late Missy and James Taylor. Mrs. Taylor attended Clarendon County public schools and the former Sumter Area Technical College in Sumter, where she majored in business. In her youth, she joined Harmony Presbyterian Church and later joined Mt. Moriah UME Church in the Westminster community of Alcolu. She was first married to the late Jeff Bennett and then to Francis Taylor. Survivors besides her husband of the home include five daughters, Melinda Montgomery and Michelle Holiday, both of New York, Tameka Holiday of Atlanta, Ga., and Ashley Bennett and Tabatha Bennett, both of Alcolu; two brothers, Eddie Wilder Jr. and Floyd Wilder, both of Alcolu; two sisters, Margaret Manigault of Hudson, Ohio, and Ann Holiday of Alcolu; a foster father, Albert Felder of Alcolu; and eight grandchildren. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church for several years. Survivors include six sons, George Cain Jr., Willie Cain, John A. Cain, Russell Cain, Robert Cain and Anthony Cain; two daughters, Rosa C. Needham J. Mims, 82, husband of Thelma Riley Mims, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at his home. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Eddie William Mims and Janie Coker Mims Sanders. Mr. Mims was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist of the Pentecostal Faith Church and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and retired from McNair Farms. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Needham J. “Jerry” Mims Jr. and his wife, Sue Mims, of Laurinburg, N.C., and Robert L. “Bobby” Mims and his wife, Deborah Mims, of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Ann Christmas and her husband, Wayne Christmas, of Sumter; a brother, Daniel Mims of Manning; two sisters, Effie Robinson and Martha McElveen, both of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Born July 17, 1941, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Smith Magazine and Nomie White. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Clark United Methodist Church, where she served with the United Methodist Women organization. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, Elronzo Wilson of St. Albans, N.Y.; three daughters, Deborah Lawrence and Lindoris Wilson, both of Richmond, Fa., and Nichelle Devon deSouza of St. Albans; a brother, Samuel Lee White of Sumter; four sisters, Bessie Lee Pringle of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Lillian White of Sumter, Hattie Lee Durant of Baltimore, Md., and Rosa Joyner of Syracuse, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. SUMMERTON — Isabella McFadden Wilson, 102, widow of McQuillar Wilson, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton. Born Feb. 9, 1898, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Mary McFadden. Mrs. Wilson attended Clarendon County public schools and was a high school graduate. She was a lifelong member of Galilee Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the missionary society, mother’s club and the senior choir. She also served as secretary of the Sons and Daughters of Job Lodge until its demise, and held leadership and service roles in numerous outreach, social and religious organizations. She enjoyed sewing and singing. Survivors include four daughters, Mae Bell McClary of Brooklyn, N.Y., Corine W. Gibson of Mayesville, and Almeta W. Johnson and Willena W. Jones, both of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren she reared as her own, Evon W. Gamble of Manning, Louise W. Holmes of Mayesville, Marilyn W. Andrews of Manning and Professor Carolyn W. Mbajekwe of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Johnny McFadden of Manning and Willie McFadden of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Hattie M. Montgomery of Sumter and Mary Lou Benjamin of Homestead, Fla.; her stepmother, Emma M. McFadden of Mayesville; 18 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Sammie Lee Wilson; and two daughters, Jessie Mae Fortune and Georgia James. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Galilee Baptist Church in Mayesville with the Rev. Eugene Myers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mayesville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. today at Samuels Funeral Home in Manning, and from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of service on Wednesday at the Galilee Baptist Church. LAKE CITY — Rosanna Scott Alston, wife of Deacon Samuel “Boyd” Alston, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence after an illness.

OSCAR GAMBLE JR.

LAKE CITY — Oscar Gamble Jr., 71, husband of Francis S. Gamble, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Lake City after an illness.
He was a son of the late Rev. Oscar Gamble Sr. and Carrie Gamble.
The family will receive friends at the home of his wife, 429 Moore St.
Services will be announced by Green’s Funeral Home.

THOMAS M. WATTS

Thomas M. Watts, 75, a retired representative in the electronics field, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at TANDEM Health Care in Melbourne, Fla. Mr. Watts was born in Florence. He moved from Atlanta, Ga., to Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., in 1960. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force. Survivors include three sons, Stuart Watts of Fayetteville, Ga., Brian Watts of Satellite Beach, Fla., and Wendell Watts of Indialantic, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Hilton Kroft of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; a brother, Warren Watts of Dalzell, S.C.; two half-brothers, J.B. Watts of Greenville, S.C., and Robert Watts and David Watts, both of Florence, S.C.; two half-sisters, Betty Stoupenos and Delores Ivey, both of Florence; and two grandchildren. No calling hours or services are scheduled. Beach Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

FANNIE F. WILSON

MANNING — Fannie “Jack” Fleming Wilson, 99, widow of Robert Wilson, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 9, 1900, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Vander Fleming and Anna Dupree Fleming. Mrs. Wilson attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined Biggers AME Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the stewardess board, missionary society, YMCA and the usher board until her health declined. She worked in the community, caring for the youth and elderly. Survivors include a son, Robert Wilson of Fort Pierce, Fla.; a daughter, Ellen Bristol of Manning; two adopted sons, Alexander Thompson and Christopher Dingle, both of Manning; six grandchildren she reared as her own, Emma L. Mack of Heightsville, Md., Letisha Jones of Columbia, Paul Burgess of Manning, Stanley Price of Jacksonville, Fla., and Wallace Burgess and Lloyd Bristol, both of Manning; three brothers, Vander Fleming Jr. and Booker T. Fleming, both of Manning, and Allen Fleming of Charleston; two sisters, Lillian Stewart of the home and Everlena Green of Charleston; 23 additional grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Biggers AME Church, Kingstree Highway, with the Rev. Francis T. Gathers, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder C.W. Williams. Burial will be in Muldrow Cemetery on Kingstree Highway. The family will receive friends at her home, Route 2, Box 540. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MONROE MOORE

COLUMBIA — Monroe Moore died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 10, 1935, in Georgia, he was a brother of A.J. Moore and James Lee Moore.
The family will receive friends at the home, 120 Geddings Road, Sumter.
Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc. in Sumter.

THOMAS L. ODOM

Thomas Lawrence Odom, 68, husband of Vera Odom, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center.
