LAKE CITY — Helen McFadden Player, 79, widow of Arthur Player, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
She was formerly of Turbeville.
Born May 31, 1921, in the Turbeville community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Henry McFadden and Jane Gamble McFadden.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Harold and Mary Francis Fleming, 828 Augustine St., Wren Village, Lake City.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home in Manning.

JAMES L. WILLIAMS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — James Louis Williams, 61, formerly of Manning, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Howard University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1938, in the Wilson community of Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of the late James Henry Williams and Lena Esther King Williams.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Ruth W. Ratchford, Route 2, Box 232, Greeleyville Highway, U.S. 521 East, Manning, S.C.

JULIA G. CALLEN

Julia G. Callen, 64, widow of William H. “Tommy” Callen, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at her home. Born in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late George Grover and Louise Medlin Grover. Mrs. Callen was a member of Faith Outreach Assembly of God Church and was owner and operator of Julia’s Cake Supply. Survivors include a son, William M. Callen of Sumter; three daughters, Sandra Hodge Gower and Lisa Christine Hall, both of Lexington, and Julia Renee McElveen of Sumter; a brother, Vernon Grover; a sister, Helen Evans of Georgia; and four grandchildren, Tia Hodge, Dustin McElveen, Brooke Callen and Ashley Hall. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Betty Gainey officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. VIOLA FAIR

NEWARK, N.J. — Viola Fair, widow of Deacon John L. Fair, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in Newark. Born Sept. 6, 1908, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Witherspoon and Emma Washington Witherspoon. Mrs. Fair lived in Newark before moving to Cranford, N.J., 71 years ago. She was employed by the Douglas Turner family in Clark, N.J., where she retired. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Newark, where she became a deaconess and missionary and a member of the usher board, BYPU and the Women’s Guild. Survivors include a son, James Fair of Cranford; two sisters, Roberta Dicks and Georgia Lee Brevard, both of Sumter; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, June 5, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Newark with the Rev. John E. Sharpe, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, N.J. PAULINE — Belinda Frances Gaunce, 38, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at her home. A native of Dalton, Ga., she was a daughter of the Rev. James R. and Avanelle Gravley Gaunce of Pauline. She received a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop College and a master’s degree from Converse College. She taught school in Sumter, Bishopville and Williamsburg. She held professional membership in the NEA and the SCEA. She was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Open Door Sunday School Class. Survivors besides her parents of Pauline include three sisters, Deborah Gaunce Huitt of Pauline, Carol Gaunce Hazel of Morganton, N.C., and Elaine Gaunce Webb of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; and three nephews and a niece. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Edgar Boles, the Rev. Phil Simun and Dr. Roland Dry Jr. officiating. DON O. MOORE

Don Osborne Moore, 64, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at his home. Born Sept. 4, 1935, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Melvin and Daisy Boyce Moore. Mr. Moore was a graduate of Sumter High School. He retired from Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia and was employed in nuclear medicine. Survivors include two sisters, Jewel Coburn of Sumter and Geraldine O’Neal of Rockingham, N.C.; a niece, Jewel Marcoux of Sumter; a nephew, Stanley D. Berry of California; two great-nieces, Christy Beck and Melinda Berry, both of Sumter; and six great-nephews, Jack, Jerry, Steven, Randy and Scott Burke and Timothy Berry, all of Sumter. The family will receive friends at 1647 Broome St. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

REV. WILLIAM T. PETERSON

The Rev. William Thomas Peterson, husband of Lillian Coplin Peterson, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 21, 1929, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Levi Peterson Sr. and Janie Fulwood Peterson. Mr. Peterson attended Sumter County public schools. He served his country during the Korean War. Upon returning to the United States, he was employed as a civil service associate at Fort Jackson and Shaw Air Force Base and was later called into the ministry. As a minister, he attended theological courses at Morris College and Allen University. His pastoral career began at New Hope AME Church in Darlington in 1970, and he successfully pastored AME churches in the Sumter and Florence districts including: Reid Chapel, St. Peter/Wells Chapel Circuit, Mt. Pleasant, Howard Chapel, Millbranch, Wayman Chapel, Union Station and Mt. Calvary. He took a leave of absence from pastoring Mt. Calvary in 1999 due to illness and began attending Mt. Sinai AME Church, where he had been a lifelong member. Survivors besides his wife of 38 years of Sumter include three sons, William T. Peterson Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Kenneth Peterson of Columbia and Terry Quattlebaum of Capital Heights, Md.; two sisters, Mary Peterson Rogers and Janie Peterson, both of Sumter; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church with the Rev. J.N. Yeadon, pastor, officiating, Bishop John Hurst Adams delivering the eulogy, assisted by Presiding Elders R.L. McCants and Charles Graves and the Revs. A. Bradley, R.E. Galloway, J. DuPree, F.W. Spears and C.R. Richburg. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Norman Herrington, husband of Louise Dennis Herrington, died today, June 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 22, 1930, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late William and Lucy Wells Herrington.

MARIE M. JOHNSON

MANNING — Marie Miller Johnson, 86, widow of Coleman Johnson Sr., died today morning, June 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an illness.
Born Aug. 13, 1913, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Dawson and Emma Miller.
She was the grandmother of Mayor Kevin Johnson of Manning.
The family will receive friends at her home, 203 Reardon St.

BISHOPVILLE — Walter Lisbon of 1220 Robert King Highway Drive, Lakeland, Fla., died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Pleasant High School gymnasium in Elliott. Burial will be in the McCutcheon Cemetery in Wysacky. ALCOLU — Heyward A. Scott Jr., 49, husband of Margaret Sweat Scott, died Thursday afternoon, June 15, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, after a brief illness.
Born June 20, 1950, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Heyward A. Scott Sr. and Dorothy Daney Scott.

PINEWOOD — Matthew Thompson, husband of Nancy Lambert Thompson, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
He was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Pinewood.

LAKE CITY — Rosanna Scott Alston, wife of Samuel Alston, died Monday, June 12, 2000. Born in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late William Scott and Maebelle McCullough Scott. Mrs. Alston was a graduate of Tomlinson High School. She was a member of New Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. Survivors besides her husband of the home include three sons, Samuel E. Alston of Sumter, Charles B. Alston of Springfield, Va., and William Ted Alston of Lake City; two daughters, Maebelle Alston and Margaret Graham, both of Lake City; four brothers, Willie Scott, Jimmy Scott and Thaddeu Scott, all of Miami, Fla., and Robert Scott of Augusta, Ga.; a stepbrother, Ernest McFadden of Florida; four sisters, Lou Ellen Washington, Janie Johnson, Sadie Washington and Mary Holt, all of Miami, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren. LYNCHBURG — Paul Dickey Jr., husband of Lutisha Baxter Dickey, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Nov. 11, 1933, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Paul Dickey Sr. and Pearl Miller Dickey. In his youth, he became an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church. After moving to White Plains, N.Y., in 1960, he was affiliated with Trinity United Methodist Church and served with United Methodist Men. After his retirement, he returned to Lynchburg and resumed his membership at Asbury United Methodist Church. Mr. Dickey attended Sumter County public schools. He served his country in the Korean War and received awards of achievement including the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Infantrymen Badge, the Korean Service Medal and the Bronze Service Star. Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg include five sons, Donald, Barry and Levistan Dickey, all of White Plains, and Paul Derrick and Kenneth Dickey, both of Lynchburg; two brothers, Ralph Dickey of Lynchburg and Ernest Dickey of Fayetteville, N.C.; four sisters, Rosa Lee Dickey, Annie McLeod and Maggie Nelson, all of Lynchburg, and Pearl Rapley of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Arnold and Thaddeus Dickey; and a sister, Vertell Harrison. LAKE CITY — Oscar “Boagger” Gamble Jr., 71, husband of Frances Singletary Gamble, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Rev. Oscar Gamble Sr. and Carrie Rogers Gamble. Mr. Gamble attended Lake City public schools. He was a member of Mt. Clair Baptist Church, where he served as trustee and usher. He was a member of Will Do Masonic Lodge 322 and a retired employee of Trayco Manufacturing. Survivors besides his wife of 44 years of the home include a son, Oscar Gamble III of Lake City; two daughters, Betty Willis and Donice Majors, both of Lake City; two brothers, Herbert Gamble of Scranton and Murray Gamble of Lake City; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. SILVER SPRING, Md. — Bernice Williamson Hughes, 78, widow of John Hughes, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Montgomery General Hospital after an extended illness. Born July 9, 1931, in Jacksonville, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Lovell Williamson and Inez Davis Williamson. Mrs. Hughes attended the public schools in Jacksonville and completed her high school education in Greensboro, N.C. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir and other auxiliaries. Survivors include three sons, George Heard III of Columbus, Ohio, James Lovell Barnett and Rodney Pennix, both of Beltsville, Md.; a daughter, Terri A. Hughes of Greensboro; and 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Dingle; a daughter, Sylvia Ann Melton; and a devoted aunt, Wilhelmenia English of Manning, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel of Samuels Funeral Home, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Cokley Richburg officiating. THOMAS L. ODOM

Thomas Lawrence Odom, 68, husband of Vera Moore Odom, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born Aug. 11, 1931, in Pensacola, Fla., he was a son of the late Amie L. Odum and Ernestine Green Odum-Mauer. Mr. Odom attended the McIllwain Presbyterian Church in Pensacola. He retired from the U.S. Army after serving during the Korean War, Vietnam War and in Berlin. He had served more than 10 years previously in the U.S. Air Force, totaling more than 22 years of service, and he received numerous awards. He owned and operated Odom’s Manufacturing Co. of Sumter. Mr. Odom was a lifetime member of the DAV, Gamecock Chapter 5. He was also a member of the VFW and the Masonic Lodge in Chama, N.M. He was a member of the Coalition of Retired Veterans. He was a supervisor/instructor at Fort Jackson in Columbia. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two daughters, Pamela Odom Sorenson and her husband, Thomas C. Odom, of Sumter, and Cheryl Denise Odom of Columbia; a brother, William B. Mauer of Ocean Springs, Miss.; two sisters, Mary Hefley of Pearl, Miss., and Susie Martino of Groveland, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Moore Spell; and two grandchildren, Brittany Adele and Brooke Nichole Sorenson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alex Mauer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Tate officiating, assisted by the Rev. Samuel White. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery with full military honors. LYNCHBURG — Mody Pompey Rufus, widow of Henry Rufus, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Dec. 30, 1912, in Olanta, she was a daughter of the late Ollie Pompey and Minnie McElveen Pompey. Mrs. Rufus attended Lee County public schools. She was a member of Warren Chapel United Methodist Church in Lynchburg until she married, and then she joined Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, where she was an active member until her health failed. She was employed as a cook in Sumter County public schools at Eastern High School and R.E. Davis until retirement. Survivors include a son, Floyd Rufus of Lynchburg; five daughters, Trudy R. Cook of Baltimore, Md., Vernice R. Lowery of Sumter, and Florence R. Sowers, Margaret R. Lowery and Gloria R. Goodman, all of Lynchburg; a brother, Chester Williams of Manning; 38 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Elizabeth Rufus and Ireleatha R. Johnson; three brothers, Rufus McElveen, Bill Williams and Louis Pompey Sr.; and two sisters, her twin, Gertrude P. Weaver, and Mary Williams. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Cousar officiating. Burial will be in Goodman Cemetery in Lynchburg. Louise Cooper Tinsley, 85, wife of Steve W. Tinsley of Covenant Place, formerly of Park Drive, Union, died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after a brief illness. Born Jan. 23, 1915, in Clinton, she was a daughter of the late Carl C. Cooper and Annie Gerk Cooper, former owners and operators of Cooper Furniture Co. in Union. She was a 1938 graduate of Converse College. She was a lifetime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Union. Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Frances Tinsley Kay and her husband, Dr. James E. Kay, of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Steve and Louise Kay, both of Sumter. She was preceded in death by two sisters, her twin, Lucille Cooper Spears, of Union and Adele Cooper Wilburn of Greenwood. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Grace United Methodist Church cemetery in Union with the Rev. Gary Byrd officiating. BISHOPVILLE — Susie Lowery Harris died Monday, June 12, 2000, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Survivors include two brothers, Nathaniel Lowery of Elliott and Early Lowery of Lynchburg; and a sister, Roselle McFadden of Elliott.

MONROE MOORE

COLUMBIA — Monroe Moore, 65, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Feb. 10, 1935, in Georgia, he was a son of the late James G. Moore and Carrie H. Moore. Mr. Moore was a lifelong farmer. Survivors include an adoptive parents, Inez Hastie and Eddie Bracey, both of Sumter; two brothers, A.J. Moore and James L. Moore, both of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Charlotte Moore, Lessie Moore and Nancy Moore, all of Sumter; and a brother-in-law, J.C. Andrews. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Sumter Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating, assisted by the Rev. H.B. Shaw. Burial will be in Bradford.
