MANNING — Ruth Nedd Goodman, 87, widow of Willie “Bill” Goodman, died Monday morning, June 5, 2000, at her home after an extended illness. Born Sept. 1, 1912, in the Kingwood community of Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Cornelious Nedd and Patsy Franklin Nedd. She was reared by her uncle and aunt, the late James and Henrietta Williams of the Jordan community. She was the mother of Hulene Goodman. The family will receive friends at her home, 9 Watts St., Bellwood subdivision. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

REMBERT — Frank Green Sr., 75, of 5460 Pisgah Road, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Kershaw County Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Willie and Lizzie McLaughlin Green. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Broom Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Woodard officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Anderson attended the public schools in Englewood, N.J., and joined Community Baptist Church in Englewood. Survivors include two brothers, Terry Anderson of the home and Hazel Kennedy of Delaware; two sisters, Shirley Wilson of Delray Beach, Fla., and Angie Anderson of Philadelphia, Pa.; 10 uncles; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Scranton with the Rev. Dr. Toney Graham Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery. LAKE CITY — Mattie McFadden Burgess, 90, widow of Henry Burgess, died Saturday, June 3, 2000. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Marcus and Kiziah Epps McFadden. Mrs. Burgess was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and she attended Shady Grove and Genesis Baptist Church. Survivors include nephews, Cleo (Alberta) Graham, Toney (Debra) Graham Jr., M.D., and Terry Anderson, all of Lake City, Albert (Emma Lee) Martin of Deerfield Beach, Fla., William (Emma) Graham of Englewood, N.J., Kirkland Graham of Summerville, Lerue Graham of Leonia, N.J., Levern (Mary) Graham of Lake City and Albert (Kim) Graham of Pennsylvania; a grandson, Tommy (Virginia) Sands of Lake City; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine “Maybell” Edwin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Scranton with the Rev. THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Deborah Ann Green, 31, died Friday evening, June 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born in Newark, N.J., she was a daughter of Sarah Durant Green and the late Sammy Green Sr. She attended Thomasville public schools and graduated from Thomasville Senior High School in 1987. She was employed with Component Concepts. She was formerly employed at Unity Street Mobile Mart. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Survivors besides her mother of Thomasville include two daughters, Simone Shaneise Thomas and Tiana Patrice Thomas, both of the home; four brothers, Sammy Green Jr. of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Franklin “Johnny” Warley, Larry Green and Charles W. Green, all of Thomasville; a sister, Aletha Warley of Pinewood, S.C.; and her paternal grandmother, Rose Green of Pinewood. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church in Thomasville with the Rev. H.N. Goode officiating. Burial will be in Holly Hill Cemetery. Members of Thomasville Senior High School Class of 1987 will be honorary pallbearers and floral bearers. JOHN E. HARDIN SR.

John Edward Hardin Sr., 83, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at his home. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late John Richard Hardin and Dessie Brown Hardin. Mr. Hardin was retired from Williams Furniture Co. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He served in the liberation of the Philippines. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, APT Service Medal and a bronze star for his participation in the Philippine liberation. He was first married to Bonnie Belle Bramlett and then to Leona Marie Davis. Survivors include two sons, John E. Hardin Jr. of St. Charles and Robert L. Hardin Sr. of Sumter; a daughter, Margarette Hardin Langland of Sumter; a brother, B. Lawton Hardin of Sumter; a sister, Rosie Hardin Kirby of Sumter; a stepson, James Hall Jr. of Sumter; an adopted daughter, Ann Davis of Santee; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, David E. Hardin and Cecil Hardin; and three sisters, Marie Hardin Main, Ella H. Bramlette and Ann H. Atkinson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Timothy E. Hudson and the Rev. Robert L. Hardin Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. William Michael Hutchinson, 49, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Zelma Goodman Hutchinson and the late Shiver C. Hutchinson Sr. Mr. Hutchinson was a member of St. John United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include a daughter, Megan Hutchinson of Sumter; a brother, S.C. Hutchinson Jr. of Elloree; and two sisters, Connie Hutchinson Davis of Salem, Va., and Cynthia H. Green of Sumter. Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at Green Acres Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. MARGUERITE B. WILSON

Marguerite Linard Bradford Wilson, widow of Moultrie B. Wilson Sr., died Friday, June 2, 2000, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter. Born Aug. 24, 1912, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Linwood Bradford and Juanita A. Belcher Bradford. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Chancellor Choir, the United Methodist Women and was a communion steward. A graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 1934, she received her bachelor’s degree from Morris College and did further studies on her master’s degree at Columbia University in New York. She also did extended training at the National Recreation Association and the leadership training course of Shaw Air Force Base. She taught at Tomlinson School in Kingstree and was principal at Chandler Middle School in Sumter County. After consolidation of the schools, she then began teaching at the former Eastern School, which is currently R.E. Davis Elementary School. She received the This Is Your Life Award for excellence in Christian service. Survivors include a niece, Sheila Hooks Clark; a nephew, Leroy Hodge Sr.; and grandnieces and grandnephews, Leroy Hodge Jr., Derrick Hodge, Marguerite H. Washington and Sheila M. Abram. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Hooks Sr. and Walter Bradford; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bradford. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harrison Ervin officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Willis T. Goodwin, the Rev. Willie Dicks and the Rev. John Dicks. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 618 S. He was a son of Wilhelmenia McClam Alford and the late Mitchell Alford. Elouise Singleton Carter, widow of Delta Carter, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born Aug. 3, 1903, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Charity London Singleton. Mrs. Carter was a faithful member of High Hills AME Church, where she worked diligently with Stewardess Board No. 1 and as a member of the missionary society. Survivors include a daughter, Annie Moore of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Larry McNeil of Greenville, N.C., Cheryl Pitts of Flushing, N.Y., and Laurie Moore of Bronx, N.Y.; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Flowers attended Green Acres Assembly of God and was a retired tree surgeon. Survivors besides his father of Sumter include four daughters, Melody Lea Flowers, Lynzette Dalton, Elizabeth Bourgeois and Angela Dalton, all of Sumter; a sister, Nyra Chapmon Brunson of Sumter; two brothers; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Archie Rhodes, husband of Hattie T. Miller Rhodes, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Omni Manor in Youngstown, Ohio. Born May 27, 1907, in Darlington, he was a son of the late Scott Archie Rhodes and Mary Daniels Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Youngstown, Ohio, where he served on the Board of Deacons and was a former member of the men’s choir. He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Youngstown Urban League and was the former pitcher for the Homestead Grays baseball team. He was employed with Hall Painting Co. for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1965. He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Rhodes; and two sisters, Glennie Bennett and Alberta Butt. Services will be noon Monday at the Fleming-DeLaine Chapel on Boyce Street in Manning, with the Rev. Henry Presley officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Zero Baptist Church Cemetery in Paxville. Fleming-DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

BISHOPVILLE — Mildred Warden Webb, 87, widow of Thurston B. Webb Jr., died Friday, June 2, 2000. Born Feb. 18, 1913, in Cheraw, she was a daughter of the late Asa Franklin and Sara Kirkley Warden. Mrs. Webb was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Pilot Club and a charter member of the Eastern Star. She was treasurer of the Lee County Cancer Association for more than 30 years and was retired from the city of Bishopville. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Millie and David Betts of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Jane Webb of Augusta, Ga.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thurston B. Webb III. Services will be 4 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church, with Dr. A. Willis Gaines Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Bishopville. ORANGEBURG — Emmie H. Holladay, 74, widow of Jessie C. “Skeet” Holladay, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, in Sumter. Born May 13, 1926, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin James Hudson and Effie Kolb Hudson. She was a member of the Northside Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post No. 2779, was retired from Greenwood Mills and was a greeter at Wal-Mart. Survivors include two sons, Ronald W. DeLorey and Alex L. DeLorey, both of Orangeburg; three sisters, Aileen Singletary and Sarah H. Strange, both of Sumter, and Arena Durham of Columbia; and a granddaughter, Cynthia S. Phillips of Easley. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald W. DeLorey, 1051 Hillsboro Road, Orangeburg, and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Orangeburg. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Northside Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Bert Williams officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg. COLUMBIA — Kathrine Vaughan, widow of Jack H. Vaughan Sr., died Tuesday, May 30, 2000. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William Lacy Currie Sr. and Vera Barden. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and was a registered dietician. Mrs. Vaughan served as dietician for Columbia College, the Governor’s Mansion during Gov. Fritz Hollings’ administration and for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. She also served two terms as president of the S.C. Dietician Association and was editor of the association’s newsletter. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Smith of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Beth Vaughan of Columbia; a son, Jack H. Vaughan Jr. of Columbia; a sister, Dorothy Kolb of Sumter; a brother, William Lacy Currie Jr. of Sumter; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services were 11 a.m. Friday at Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Youth Program at Millen Baptist Church, P.O. Box 827, Millen, Ga., 30442. Clarence Millard Welch departed this earth on Thursday, June 1, 2000, to go to his Heavenly Father. He was born in Florence County on October 1, 1932, the son of the late Clarence M. Welch and Bessie B. Welch. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nellie McAllister Welch; children Dale and Denise Welch and Chuck and Becky Welch, all of Columbia, S.C. He had five grandchildren, D.J., Jonathan, Lindsay, Heather and Hunter Welch. He is also survived by four brothers, Wilbur Welch of New Zion, R.M. Welch and Alfonza Welch, both of Sumter, and Beasley Welch of Manning; two sisters, Kathleen Nettles of Manning and Bernice Welch of New Zion; two sisters by marriage, Doris Walters of Goose Creek, S.C., and Shirley Cribb of Johnsonville, S.C. Two brothers predeceased him. He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, a Korean veteran and worked civil service at Shaw Air Force Base for over 30 years. For the last 10 years he owned and operated Welch’s lawn maintenance business. Memorial services will be conducted by Dr. Clay Smith and Dr. Daniel B. Settle at Alice Drive Baptist Church at 3 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Alice Drive Baptist Church Building Fund, Sumter, S.C., and Shikinah Baptist Church in Greenville.
