Clyde Johnes died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Oct. 18, 1935, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Beatrice Pack Ballard Jones. He professed Christ at an early age and joined Enon Baptist Church. Later, he joined Bethlehem Baptist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Ethel Bowman of Sumter and Dorothy Kennedy of Inwood, N.Y. Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Rev. L.W. Barnes, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Beulah Cemetery on Pinewood Road. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary. The family will receive friends at the home of McKinley and Ethel Bowman, 2180 Kingsbury Road. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Archie Rhodes, husband of Hattie Miller Rhodes, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Omni Manor in Youngstown. He was born May 27, 1907, in Darlington, S.C. Services will be announced by Fleming-DeLaine Funeral Home in Manning, S.C.

LADSON — Frances Marie Mouzon McGuire, 54, wife of Harrell Tindall McGuire, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at a local hospital. Born July 18, 1945, in Charleston, she was a daughter of Alvena Stuart Mouzon and the late Wilbur Lory Mouzon. Mrs. McGuire was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville. She was a teacher’s assistant for the Dorchester County School District. Survivors besides her husband of Ladson and her mother of Charleston include two daughters, Dawn Marie McGuire of Ladson and April McGuire Wright of Summerville; a brother, Carlisle L. Mouzon of Manning; two sisters, Gretta A. Pratt of Summerton and Carleen McCullough of Seabrook Island; and a granddaughter, Marissa Lory McGuire of Ladson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Spell Chapel of Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville. Burial will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Ruth Hudson Rodgers, 78, widow of John Carl Rodgers, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at her home. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Edward Hudson and Hattie Shorter Hudson. Mrs. Rodgers was a member of First Church of God on Wise Drive. She was a graduate of Clevenger Business College. She was former owner of Star Cab Co. and Rodgers Garage. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Ann Wright and her husband, Dumont Wright, of Columbia; two brothers, Marvin Hudson and J.T. Hudson, both of Sumter; six sisters, Ruby White and Trudie McLeod, both of Sumter, Lila Elmore of Darlington, Ida Geddings of Camden, Docia Keech of Seabrook, Texas, and Mildred Lumpkins of Leoma, Tenn.; and two granddaughters, Lauren Wright and Erin Wright, both of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mae H. Rodgers. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Thomasenia Smiling, wife of Curtis Smiling, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born Nov. 28, 1935, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Moody Sr. and Maggie Jenkins-Maple. Mrs. Smiling graduated from Lincoln High School in Sumter and attended Brooklyn Community College in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was employed as a teacher’s assistant for the city of New York for 35 years. After retirement, she and her husband returned to Sumter. She was a devout member of East New York Church of God, where she served 35 years as a choir member, deaconness, a member of Leadership Intercessory Prayer and Women’s Leadership Team, instructor of New Members (Growing in Christ), Flea Market (church building/scholarship funds), vice president of the usher department, a Sunday school teacher and youth president and adviser. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two sons, Michael Smiling of Tampa, Fla., and Rodney Smiling of Metuchen, N.J.; three daughters, Sandra Jean Boardraye, Carolyn Denise Teagle and Phyllis Lorraine Jackson, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Ollie Josey of Georgia, Ferdinand Maple of Connecticut and Ronnie Maple of Sumter; five sisters, Mary Shaw of Sumter, Grace Jackson of Washington, D.C., Thelma Johnson of Chicago, Ill., Dianne Edmunds of Georgia and Dorothy Philips of New York; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives. A wake service will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary. SUMMERTON — Robert Alphonso Stukes Sr., husband of Mary Ann Brown Stukes, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Born July 10, 1934, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Ladson “Babe” Stukes and Katie Lawson Stukes. Mr. Stukes attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he attended Liberty Hill AME Church. In 1957, he relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to pursue his fascination of truck driving; and he was dedicated and reliable in this occupation. Survivors besides his wife of the home include four sons, Robert “Jerome” Stukes Jr., Haywood Stukes and Carl Stukes, both of Greensboro, N.C., and Michael Stukes of Ft. Lauderdale; two daughters, Roberta McCray of Manning and Mamie L. Stukes of Atlanta, Ga.; six brothers, Jacob, Marion, Lionel, Able and Daniel M. Stukes, all of New York, and Lester Bennett of Summerton; eight sisters, Rochelle S. Glover of Lumberton, N.C., Katie Bennett, Ethel Stukes, Suzanne Bennett and Marchia Stukes, all of New York, Leola Lawson of Manning, Henrietta S. MAE V. TAYLOR

HEMINGWAY — Mae Valdez Taylor, 83, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000. Born in Havana, Cuba, she was a daughter of the late Walking and Mary Role Valdez. Mrs. Taylor attended the public schools in Tampa, Fla., and received a nursing degree from Tampa Community College. She was employed as a nurse’s aide and sales clerk for more than 35 years in Brooklyn, N.Y. She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church and St. Stephens Episcopal Church, both in Brooklyn. She later joined Jerusalem AME Church in Hemingway. She was first married to the late Johnny Border, and then to the late Wilton Taylor. Survivors include her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mattie Mae Pittman of Hemingway, Ben (Bessie) Taylor and Timothy Green, all of Hemingway, Leatha Mae Taylor of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Joseph (Clarece) Green of Orangeburg; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jerusalem AME Church with the Rev. James Frost, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. CLARENCE M. WELCH

Clarence Millard Welch departed this earth on Thursday, June 1, 2000, to go to his Heavenly Father. He was born in Florence County on October 1, 1932, the son of the late Clarence M. Welch and Bessie B. Welch. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nellie McAllister Welch; children Dale and Denise Welch and Chuck and Becky Welch, all of Columbia, S.C. He had five grandchildren, D.J., Jonathan, Lindsay, Heather and Hunter Welch. He is also survived by four brothers, Wilbur Welch of New Zion, R.M. Welch and Alfonza Welch, both of Sumter, and Beasley Welch of Manning; two sisters, Kathleen Nettles of Manning and Bernice Welch of New Zion; two sisters by marriage, Doris Walters of Goose Creek, S.C., and Shirley Cribb of Johnsonville, S.C. Two brothers predeceased him. He was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, a Korean veteran and worked civil service at Shaw AFB for over 30 years. For the last 10 years he owned and operated Welch’s lawn maintenance business. Memorial services will be conducted by Dr. Clay Smith and Dr. Daniel B. Settle at Alice Drive Baptist Church on Saturday at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to Alice Drive Baptist Church Building Fund, Sumter, S.C., and Shikinah Baptist Church in Greenville. Elouise Singleton Carter, 96, widow of Delta Carter, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. DALZELL — Charles E. “Chuck” Edwards, 63, husband of Dorothy K. “Dot” Ketchie Edwards, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his home. Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was a son of the late Lambert M. Edwards and Alva Mae Warren Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church, the Hillcrest Masonic Lodge and was a S.C. state constable. He was a U.S. Air Force master sergeant with 23 years of service and a Vietnam War veteran. He also retired from Suburban Propane Gas Co. Survivors besides his wife of Dalzell include a son, Daniel R. Edwards of Dalzell; three daughters, Treena Edwards McCutchen and Donna Edwards Hogan, both of Orange Park, Fla., and Linda Edwards Johnson of Sumter; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Crosswell Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Rodney Howard officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with military honors. LUCILE R. EVANS

Lucile Richard Evans died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the Health Center at Richland Place in Nashville, Tenn. Born March 1, 1900, in Sumter, she was the youngest of 10 children born to the late Samuel Richards and Hannah Burroughs Richards. Mrs. Evans was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities including the United Methodist Women, senior choir, former secretary of the Council on Ministries, church historian, director of the gospel choir, youth choir musician, president of the Wesleyan Service Guild of the Hartsville District and member of Church Women United. She was active in the community, serving as secretary of the Sumter branch of the NAACP, a former secretary of the St. Paul Chapter No. 345 of the Order of Eastern Star, and a musician for District No. 4 of the Order of Eastern Star. Active in the Democratic Party, she served as poll manager of the Birnie precinct for many years. She was also active in the Sumter Music Guild, a charter member of the Martin Luther King Celebration Committee and the YWCA, the Friendly Ladies Club, the Green Thumb Garden Club and the Tuesday Afternoon Club. Mrs. Evans was a graduate of Lincoln High School and a graduate of Colored Normal, Industrial, Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina, Class of 1920 (currently South Carolina State University), and was the oldest living graduate of that institution. She also graduated from Morris College, class of 1945. She completed further studies at North Carolina Teachers College in Durham, N.C., and Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. She taught at the former Sumter Stonehill School. Survivors include her grandchildren, Dr. Richard N. Evans of Glendale, Wis., Samuel Roosevelt Evans of Los Angeles, Calif., Deborah Armeta Williams of Ft. Detrick, Md., Barbara L. Moon of Louisville, Ky., and Edna Ranelle Evans-Abernathy of Milwaukee, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren, Rachel Evans, Hillary Evans, Chanee A. Moon, Chanel F. Moon, Charles Abernathy Moon, Charis Evans Moon, Emma A. Williams and David Vincent Williams; and her daughter-in-law, Emma G. Evans Abernathy of Clarksville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her only son, Richard Neal Evans Sr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Willis T. Goodwin officiating, the Rev. Harrison Ervin, pastor, assisted by the Rev. James Fountain and the Rev. Willie Dicks. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. LYNCHBURG — Margie Keels, 75, widow of William Wyatt Keels, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Eddie Capers and Mayme Kizer Capers. She was a homemaker and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, William Wyatt Keels Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Linda K. Mixon, Gayle K. Jans, Susan K. Hurdle and Nancy K. McElveen, all of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pearletha Sweet Solomon, widow of Joseph Solomon Sr., died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 20, 1932, in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Mack and Mabel Bowman Sweet. Mrs. Solomon was an active member of Jerusalem Stuckey Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary society faithfully until her health failed. She attended Lee County public schools. Survivors include six sons, Nathaniel Solomon and Leroy Solomon, both of Florence, Herbert Solomon of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Willie Solomon of Lynchburg, Isaiah Solomon of Atlanta, Ga., and Maurice Solomon of College Park, Ga.; five daughters, Jessie S. McCullough, Patricia Solomon and Deneshia Solomon, all of Sumter; a brother, Willie Sweet of Paterson, N.J.; 38 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. BISHOPVILLE — Coleman L. Bramlett, 94, widower of Wilhelmina Alexander Bramlett, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his home after a brief illness. Born May 21, 1906, in Lee County, he was a son of the late John Madison Bramlett and Hettie Beasley Bramlett. Mr. Bramlett was a member of Hephzibah Presbyterian Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired merchant and a farmer. Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Welsh and her husband, Steven Welsh, of Bishopville; five sons, Dr. Lindy Bramlett and his wife, Sharon Bramlett, of Columbia, Matt Bramlett and his wife, Betsy Bramlett, Al Bramlett and his wife, Eva Bramlett, all of Bishopville; Ronnie Houck and his wife, Ann Houck, of Bethune, and Julius C. Houck and his wife, Judy Houck, of Bishopville; three sisters, Alice Gray Houser and Nettie B. Huntley, both of Bishopville, and Ruby B. Born Oct. 21, 1965, in Manning, he was a son of the late Alex “Preacher” Gamble Jr. and Willie Mae Briggs Gamble. Mr. Gamble attended the public schools in Homestead, Fla. Survivors include four brothers, Jerome Gamble, Sheldon Gamble and Marvin Gamble, all of Miami, Fla., and Willie J. Gamble of Manning; three sisters, Jeanette Hilton and Mary B. Lawson, both of Manning, and Janie Gamble of Homestead; and his maternal grandparents, Oscar and Carrie Briggs of Manning. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Hayes F. Harley Sr. of Columbia and Mrs. Claude Funkhouser Jr. of Bethesda, Md.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel Lee and the Rev. John Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be William C. Luther Jr., W. Walton Luther Jr., Charles M. Luther Jr., Russell J. Luther Jr., William B. Harley Jr., Steve Funkhouser, Tommy Huggins Jr. and the Rev. Rick Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Graham Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of her son, Luke Rogers, 519 Phelps St. Memorials may be made to Graham Baptist Church or to the Salvation Army. DR. SUBBEAL C. TOOMBS

SANTEE — Dr. Subbeal C. Toombs of 12 Andre Micheaux Road, 81, husband of Annie Mae Frierson Toombs, died Friday, May 26, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident at Interstate 95, Exit 102, in North Santee. Born Dec. 30, 1918, in Richmond, Va., he was a son of the late Russell Toombs and Julia Anderson Toombs. Dr. Toombs attended the public schools in Richmond, Va., and graduated cum laude from Virginia Union College in Richmond, where he received a bachelor’s degree. In 1946, he received a doctorate from Howard University in Washington, D.C., in dentistry. Dr. Toombs enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II as a dental officer. He received the following decorations and citations: American Campaign Medal, European African Middle East Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He retired from private dental practice in New York City in 1987 and moved to Santee, where he became a loyal member of Santee Presbyterian Church until his death. Survivors include a brother, Harold R. Toombs of Richmond; two sisters-in-law, Cleon J. Toombs of Richmond and Esther F. Johnson of Summerton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel of Samuels Funeral Home, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Coit R. Troutman, pastor of Santee Presbyterian Church in Santee, officiating, assisted by the Rev. George P. Windley. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister-in-law, Esther F. Johnson, Route 1, Box 1255, Scarborough Landing Road, in the Camp Bob Cooper community of Summerton. Samuels Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ANNIE F. TOOMBS

SANTEE — Annie Mae Frierson Toombs of 12 Andre Micheaux Road, 83, wife of Dr. Subbeal C. Toombs, died Friday afternoon, May 26, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born April 9, 1917, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William Frierson and Emma Lemon Frierson. Mrs. Toombs attended the public schools Ansonia, Conn., and graduated from Ansonia High School in 1933. She was employed as an assistant librarian in New York City from 1936 to 1956, and she worked as an dental assistant in her husband’s dental practice from 1958 until her retirement in 1987. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Jamaica, N.Y., and after moving to Ansonia, she became a member of the AME Zion Church. After moving to Santee, she united with Santee Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a sister, Esther F. Johnson of Summerton; a brother-in-law, Harold R. Toombs of Richmond, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Marie Frierson of Port Jefferson, N.Y., and Cleon Toombs of Richmond; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, James Frierson, John J. Frierson and William Grant Frierson Jr.; and three sisters, Mamie F. Vaughn, Alice F. Williams and Ada F. Carrington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel of Samuels Funeral Home, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Coit R. MANNING — Roy “Ray” Gamble, 34, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 21, 1965, in Manning, he was a son of the late Alex “Preacher” Gamble Jr. and Willie Mae Briggs Gamble. The family will receive friends at the home of his grandaunt, Virginia Weeks, 906 Branchview Drive in Bellwood subdivision of Manning, and the home of his sister, Mary Bennett Lawson, Lakebrook Apartments, No. D, Raccoon Road, Manning. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

FRANCES MARTIN

Frances Martin, 75, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Carolina Hospital in Florence. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Edward Smith, 4 King St., Sumter. Job’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

RUTH C. BOSIER

Ruth A. Collins Bosier, wife of Roosevelt Bosier, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Sept. 25, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Julius Collins and the late Pauline Sweat Collins. Mrs. Bosier attended Paxville Elementary School and Scott’s Branch High School. In her youth she joined Zion Hill Baptist Church, and she later joined New Hope AME Church, where she served on the trustee board, stewardess board, missionary board, gospel choir, sweetheart banquet committee, kitchen committee and the pastor’s aide ministry. She was employed by Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning for 23 years. Survivors besides her husband of Manning and her father of Sumter include a son, George Bosier of Manning; four daughters, Roslyn Diann Miller, Shirley Mack and Janice Scott, all of Manning, and Susan Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; four brothers, Roosevelt Collins, Jimmy Johnson and Harry Lee Johnson, all of Sumter, and James Johnson of Bridgeport, Conn.; a sister, Rutha Mae Darleans of Norwalk, Conn.; four adopted sons, Charles Bosier of Blackville, Michael Bosier of Atlanta, Ga., Tommie Johnson of Sumter, and Eugene Davis of Kershaw; four adopted daughters, Lucy Sweat, Thomasena Sweat, and Patricia Williams, all of Sumter, and Denise Budden of Hampton, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 16 adopted grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three adopted great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Davis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at New Hope AME Church in Pinewood, with the Revs. J. Seawright, pastor, and Mary Jackson officiating, assisted by the Revs. Jack Dais, Esterleen Bethune, Willie Wright Jr. and Roosevelt Boyd. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 1 p.m. from the home, Apt. 15-B, S. Boundary St., Manning. The family will receive friends at the home. Community Funeral Home in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

MICHAEL BRUNSON ALCOLU — Michael Wesley Brunson, 45, husband of Kathy Elizabeth Ridgeway Brunson, died Friday, May 26, 2000, in Manning. Born Nov. 4, 1954, in Manning, he was a son of James Wesley Brunson and the late Lois Loretta Hodge Brunson. Mr. Brunson was an insurance agent for Clarendon County Farm Bureau, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and lay leader, a member and past president of the Lion’s Club and past assistant recreational director for Clarendon County and Dixie Youth Baseball coach. Survivors besides his wife and father, both of Alcolu, include a stepmother, Anne Plowden Brunson of Alcolu; a son, Wesley Ridgeway Brunson of Alcolu; a daughter, Kelsey Elizabeth Ridgeway Brunson of Alcolu, a brother, Mark Alan Brunson of Alcolu; a sister, Sandra Brunson Edens of Dalzell; two stepbrothers, Chuck Wiley of West Virginia and Plowden Nelson of Pensacola, Fla.; two stepsisters, Vickie Lofton of Myrtle Beach and Lindy Neely of West Virginia. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Revs. Seth Williams and Thomas J. Conway officiating. Burial will be in Brunson Cemetery in Sumter County. Pallbearers will be Donald Hardy, Stanley Hodge, Bill Coker, Jody Hodge, Andrew Hodge, Bruce Hodge, Ricky Lee and Randy Feagin. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Dixie Youth Braves, Lion’s Club, Adult Sunday School Class of Trinity UMC and staff of Clarendon County Farm Bureau. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, Manning, and other times at the residence, Route 1, Box 720, Brewington Road, Alcolu. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund or memorial fund. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
