REMBERT — Sophie Ann Bucklew, 68, widow of Reginald Edwin Bucklew, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in San Antonio, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Quesenberry and Eloise Tafolla Quesenberry. Mrs. Bucklew was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Dalzell. Survivors include two sons, Judson Ray Bucklew of Rembert and Thomas Lee Bucklew of Sumter; two daughters, Cherie Ann Bucklew of Raleigh, N.C., and Julie L. Bucklew of Dalzell; a brother, Richard Quesenberry of Carrollton, Ga.; a sister, Joyce Herrera of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Dalton Lee Bucklew; and a daughter, Regina Laurel Bucklew May. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Phillips and the Rev. Dean Pope officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Baptist Church cemetery in Rembert. Glenda DuBose Flowers, 56, wife of Robert N. Flowers, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Wyatt DuBose and Loueva McLeod DuBose. Mrs. Flowers attended Green Acres Assembly of God Church. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include four daughters, Angela Dalton, Elizabeth Bourgeois, Lynzette Dalton and Melody Flowers, all of Sumter; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery. IVERSON S. JOHNSON JR.

Iverson Stuckey Johnson Jr., husband of June Alice Johnson, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at his home. Born April 5, 1930, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Iverson Stuckey Johnson Sr. and Clemmie Dunlop Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a truck driver for more than 50 years. He spent the past five years assisting truck drivers with emergency roadside service with Johnson Truck Service of Sumter. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Lee Johnson of Columbia; three daughters, Karen Russo of Columbia, and Kelley Smith and Maria Howell, both of Sumter; a sister, Dorothy Hunberger of Wyoming; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. William Johnson officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Florence National Cemetery in Florence. BISHOPVILLE — Wilford “Jaybird” Monroe Sr., 74, widower of Ethel Mae McQuillar Monroe, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at his home. Born Aug. 16, 1925, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Jackson and Elizabeth Peterson Monroe. Mr. Monroe attended Lee County public schools. He was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church. He was a member of Liberty Hill Masonic Lodge No. 357 and the NAACP. He was an agriculturalist, and an avid fisherman and hunter. Survivors include two sons, Robert Monroe of New York, N.Y., and Wilford Monroe Jr. of Bronx, N.Y.; three daughters, Bernice Cooper of Philadelphia, Pa., Helen James of Coatesville, Pa., and Mary Sutton of Sumter; a brother, Jesse Monroe of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Nicola Harriett of Richmond, Va., Bernice Reames of Bishopville and Irene Frierson of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a special friend. He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel David Wilson of New York and Charles Holmes of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, Golden Monroe Sr. of Bishopville; and a sister, Pelzer McDonald of Baltimore, Md. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. T.O. Everett, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. COLUMBIA — Curtis Pearson, 33, husband of Gwendolyn Pearson, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born July 12, 1966, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Lucious Brunson and Mary Lou Washington. Mr. Pearson attended Lee County public schools. He was employed by Gold Kist. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Cedric Pearson and Curtis Pearson Jr.; a daughter, Celicia Pearson; a stepson, Antonio Smith of Sumter; three brothers, John Pearson, Leo Wilson and Isaac Pearson, all of Newark, N.J.; and five sisters, Wilhelmenia Hickmon and Evelyn Rice, both of Dalzell, Deloris English and Shirley Geddie, both of Sumter, and Jearline Mickens of Newark. He was preceded in death by a sister, Roberta Moses. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Phillip O. Coleman officiating. Archie Lee P. Taylor, 84, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Calhoun, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Joseph Arch Phillips and the late Esther Lavada Harris Phillips. Survivors include three daughters, Sarah “Bobbie” Self of Sumter, Huvian Kinzalow of Tampa, Fla., and Betty Robinson of Stone Mountain, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Dave Rich Sr., husband of Laura Slater Rich, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 26, 1927, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Gus Rich and Carrie Anderson Rich. FOSTER BLACKWELL

MAYESVILLE — Foster Blackwell, husband of Sarah Johnson Blackwell, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at his home. Born Aug. 5, 1919, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. George and Sarah Isreal Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a World War II veteran, having received the EAMET Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars and the American Theater Medal. He was a member of Ebenezer AME Church, where he served on the trustee board, father’s club, usher board and senior choir. Survivors besides his wife of Mayesville include three sons, Melvin Blackwell of Columbus, Ga., Earl China of Houston, Texas, and Iyapo Ajani of Queens, N.Y.; three daughters, Janice B. Prince of Sumter, Marilyn B. Wilson of Atlanta, Ga., and Emma Jean Durham of Indiana; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Laney, Willie and Lawrence Blackwell; and a sister, Alice Tomlin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer AME Church in Mayesville with the Rev. Leo Chapman Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mayesville Cemetery. SUMMERTON — Clarence “Big Coochie” Canty, 64, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home. Born Sept. 30, 1935, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Robert Canty and Mae Bell Canty. Mr. Canty attended Clarendon County public schools. He was employed with Elliott’s Trucking Co. for many years. Survivors include five brothers, Willie Lee Canty of Bishopville, Eddie Lee Canty of Sumter, Robert Canty of Alcolu, Patrick Canty of Manning and T. Canty of Latta; and sisters, Josephine C. Brown of Reddington, Fla., Louise C. Ellerbee and Rose Anna Canty, both of Sumter, and Leonora C. Abraham of Manning. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Samuel Canty; and a sister, Pauline Baxter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home in Sumter with Elder Stephen James officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray. Martin T. Nance, 30, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Miami, Fla., he was a son of Jeffery Lee Blitz and Valirie Blouin Earley. Survivors besides his father of Miami, Fla., and his mother and stepfather, Ralph Early, of Sumter include a son, Ryan D. Nance of Sumter; a brother, David Nance of Sumter; a sister, Jeanie Louise Nance of New Hampshire; and his grandmother, Helen Foster of Sumter. LENOIR, N.C. — Jesse E. Poarch of Ravenwood Drive, 89, husband of Hazel Bush Poarch, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 23, 1910, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Hugh L. and Julia E. Hollars Poarch. Mr. Poarch was retired from Bernhardt Furniture Industries. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, G. Howard Poarch of Lenoir and Michael D. Poarch of Mt. Holly; a daughter, Mrs. James (Clara Jean) Mahaffey of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Edna Pearson of Lenoir; eight grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Horace Poarch, Donald Poarch and Ralph Poarch; and six sisters, Artie Poarch, Martha Price, Bertha Holden, Clara Poarch, Ethel Pritchard and Myrtle Bryant. MANNING — Victor Rose, 48, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Nov. 6, 1951, in New York, N.Y., he was a son of Eddie Rose and the late Marie Adamson Rose. He was reared by his maternal grandmother, Ephsie Adamson Miller. Mr. Rose attended the public schools in New York, N.Y. He joined Taw Caw Baptist Church and later became a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Alcolu. He was employed as a head chef for various restaurants throughout South Carolina. He was first married to the late Pearl Mae Grace Rose and then to Thelma White Rose. Survivors besides his wife of Myrtle Beach, his father of New York, N.Y., and his maternal grandmother who reared him, Ephsie Adamson Miller of Manning, include two sons, Jeremy V. Brown of Manning and Victor C. Mitchell of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three daughters, Victoria Dukes and Veronica M. Nelson, both of Manning, and Tamaka Coaxum of New York, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Taw Caw Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. James Wesley “Jim” Schultz, 34, husband of Magda E. Del Toro Schultz, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Earl Wesley Schultz and Patricia McCall Schultz. Mr. Schultz was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and a former superintendent of the Bishopville Water Department for 10 years. He previously served four years in the U.S. Air Force. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and his parents of Sumter include a daughter, Tiffany Ann Schultz of Sumter; two brothers, Ross Schultz of Boise, Idaho, and Keith Schultz of Sumter; and a sister, Laytreda Schultz of Mt. Home, Idaho. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Swan Lake Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ken Thomas and the Rev. Chris Wells officiating. Burial was in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Deas, Brett Justice, Bobby Thomas, John Brannon, John Nesbitt and Garnett McAllister. MANNING — Johnny “Nub” Stukes, 72, husband of Ruth Davis Stukes, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at his home. Born Feb. 10, 1928, in Manning, he was a son of the late Rev. John Dupree Sr. and Lear Stukes. Mr. Stukes was reared by Wallace and Evan Burgess. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Trinity AME Church, where he served as a past trustee, a member of the Men’s Club and a member of the steward board. He was first employed as a service station attendant at Land Station, and later was employed by B.F. Hill, Clarendon Supply Co. and Sam Barrett as a painter. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a daughter, Vera Mae Burris of Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, John Wesley Dupree of Charleston, Samuel Dupree of Columbia and Joseph Stukes of Alcolu; two sisters, Sarah Margaret Galloway of Columbia and Mary Ann Dupree of New York, N.Y.; three foster brothers, John Burgess and Arthur Burgess, both of Orangeburg, and Wallace Burgess of Youngstown, Ohio; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Trinity AME Church, Rigby Road, with the Rev. John Fredrick, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Katherine Bryan Chatham, 79, wife of Phares E. “Jack” Chatham Jr., died Monday, May 22, 2000, at her home. Born in Walterboro, she was a daughter of the late Richard Henry Bryan and Carrie Arlene Carter Bryan. Mrs. Chatham was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she taught the 2-year-old Sunday school class for 27 years. Survivors include a son, Phares E. “Pec” Chatham III of Sumter; four daughters, Georgianna C. Turner of Columbia, Kathie C. Barron of Durham, N.C., Mildred C. Barrineau of Sumter and Beth C. Lubahn of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters, Lillie Brooks of Sebring, Fla., and Julia Harton of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Born Sept. 27, 1933, in Dorchester County, she was a daughter of the late Pickney J. “Pink” Marchant and Jessie C. Jackson Marchant. Mrs. Garrett was a member of Pressley Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was employed by Wal-Mart in Manning. Survivors besides her husband of the home include two sons, Charles M. Garrett of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Ronnie W. Garrett of Goose Creek; two daughters, Brenda G. Nettles of Florence and Janet G. DARLINGTON — Jim Edward Scurry, 64, husband of Delores O’Neal Scurry, died Monday morning, May 22, 2000, at a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late James Henry and Geneva Weaver Scurry. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Scurry started his career with R.B. Pond Construction Co. from 1953-1967, and then became president and manager of Industrial Paving Inc. from 1967 to the present. He attended Central Baptist Church and was a member of Syracuse Rod and Gun Club, Darlington County Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Mr. Scurry was also an avid gardener. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, James Edward (Trudy) Scurry of Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Susan Scurry) Graham of Columbia; two stepsons, Jeffery Lee (Bunny) Kelly and James Gregory (Suzy) Kelly, both of Darlington; 11 grandchildren, including Heather Kelly of the home; five brothers, J.T. (Carol) Scurry of Florence, Roland (Mary) Scurry of Bishopville, Lewis Scurry of Columbia, Ernest (Judy) Scurry of Darlington and Allen (Ava) Scurry of Bishopville; and two sisters, Marie Cox of Bishopville and Mrs. T.B. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Belk Funeral Home Inc. JOHNNY STUKES

MANNING — Johnny “Nub” Stukes, 72, husband of Ruth Davis Stukes, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at his home. Born Feb. 10, 1928, in Manning, he was a son of the late Rev. John Dupree Sr. and Lear Stukes. Mr. Stukes was reared by Wallace and Evan Burgess. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Trinity AME Church, where he served as a past trustee, a member of the Men’s Club and a member of the steward board. He was first employed as a service station attendant at Land Station, and he later was employed by B.F. Hill, Clarendon Supply Co. and Sam Barrett as a painter. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two daughters, Sarah Margaret Galloway of Columbia and Mary Ann Dupree of New York, N.Y.; three brothers, John Wesley Dupree of Charleston, Samuel Dupree of Columbia and Joseph Stukes of Alcolu; three foster brothers, John Burgess and Arthur Burgess, both of Orangeburg, and Wallace Burgess of Youngstown, Ohio; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity AME Church, Rigby Road, with the Rev. John Fredrick, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon and the Rev. Leon Terry. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 106 Richburg St. Samuels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LARRY VAUGHN

Larry “Larry Love” Vaughn, 43, died Friday morning, May 19, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Aug. 8, 1956, in Sumter, he was a son of Albert and Mamie Lee Ford Vaughn. Mr. Vaughn attended Stone Hill Elementary School and completed his education at Sumter High School. He was employed at Georgia Pacific for many years and Madison for a while. In his youth, he joined Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors besides his parents of the home include a daughter, Shantaia Rouse of Mayesville; a brother, Vinson Vaughn of Sumter; three sisters, Mary Bailey of Irmo, Gladys Barnabas of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Bertie Budden of Sumter; and a foster sister, Peggy Laws of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating, assisted by the Rev. Leon Winn, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:20 p.m. from the home, 823 Webb St. The family will receive friends at the home. Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Katherine B. Chatham, 69, died today, May 22, 2000, at her home.
Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

BISHOPVILLE — Ruth Green died Saturday evening, May 20, 2000, at Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville.
Miss Green was born in Lee County.

COLUMBIA — Curtis Pearson, husband of Gwendolyn Smith Pearson, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born July 12, 1966, in Lee County, he was a son of Lucious Brunson and Mary Lou Washington. The family will receive friends at the home of his brother-in-law, James Smith, 70 Corn Court, Sumter. LAUTISHIA C. CLARK

MANNING — Lautishia Jean Carter Clark, 35, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at her home in Manning. Born March 12, 1965, in Charleston, she was a daughter of Cleveland Carter and Joyce Davis Carter. She was a former attendant for Hawthorne Industries. She attended Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors besides her parents, both of Manning, include a son, Avery Christopher Clark of Manning; a daughter, Jennifer Ann Clark of Manning; two brothers, George Carter and Mark Carter, both of Charleston; and two sisters, Malynda McLemore of Beaufort and Lucky Davis of North Carolina. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m Tuesday in Oak Grove Cemetery with the Rev. C.S. Salter officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church, Route 7, Box 569, Manning, SC 29102. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
