Mr. Battle attended the public schools in Newark, N.J., and Lake City. He was a member of Greater St. James AME Church. He was employed as a truck driver for D.M. Kaye Transport. Survivors besides his wife of Lake City and his parents of Lake City include a daughter, Brittany Battle of Lake City; two brothers, James Edward Battle of Newark, N.J., and Sylvester Northlee of Washington, N.C.; two sisters, Rebecca B. Andrews of Lake City and Regina Dial of Newark; his paternal grandmother, Martha Virginia Battle of Newark; and his maternal grandparents, Willie and Lorraine Peterson of Pearson, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater St. James AME Church, Moore Street, with the Rev. James Glisson, pastor, and the Rev. Ralph Singletary officiating. WELLFORD — Geraldine Wood Daniels, 38, wife of Gregory Daniels, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Rocky Mount, N.C., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. She was a daughter of Jerry Wallace Wood and Mazie Gage Wood. Survivors besides her parents of Wellford include two sons, Sean Daniels and Jeffrey Daniels, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a daughter, Brittany Daniels of Philadelphia. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Inman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her parents in Wellford. LAKE CITY — Gregory Daniels, 38, husband of Geraldine Wood Daniels, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Rocky Mount, N.C., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born June 15, 1961, in Lake City, he was a son of Jasper Hannah and Cora Bell Daniels Everette. Mr. Daniels was a 1979 graduate of Lake City High School. He received an associate of arts degree from Spartanburg Methodist College and a bachelor’s degree from Limestone College in Gaffney. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Desert Storm conflict and was honorably discharged. He was employed at the U.S. Postal Service in Philadelphia, Pa. In his youth, he joined St. Mark Holiness Church in Lake City. Survivors besides his mother of Philadelphia and his father of Florida include two sons, Sean Daniels and Jeffery Daniels, both of Philadelphia; and a daughter, Brittany Daniels of Philadelphia. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Believers Holiness Convention Center, U.S. 52 North, Coward, with Elder Linwood Cooper, pastor of St. Mark Holiness Church in Lake City, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Eugene Burgess and Bishop Odell Fulton. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Cemetery, Moore Street, Lake City. LAKE CITY — Neal Daniels, 20, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Rocky Mount, N.C., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born Sept. 8, 1979, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of the late George Patterson and Inell Daniels. Mr. Daniels was a 1997 graduate of Murrell Dobbins AVT High School in Philadelphia. He also attended Philadelphia Community College. He was employed by CVS Pharmacy in Philadelphia. He attended Deliverance Evangelist Church in Philadelphia. Survivors include five aunts, Earnestine Cameron of the home, Cora Bell Everette of Philadelphia, Letha Daniels and Mary Witherspoon, both of Lake City, and Bernice Bigelow of Los Angeles, Calif. Raymond Steven Douroux, 78, husband of Gloria Wall Douroux, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at his home. Born in New Orleans, La., he was a son of the late Charles Piattoly and Annie Piattoly. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Al Douroux of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Wade Douroux of Columbia and Dawn Mahoney of Lexington. Bonnie D. Dugger, 86, widow of Price Dugger, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Baxley, Ga., she was a daughter of the late John H. Dean and Alice Walker Dean. Mrs. Dugger was a member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church in Savannah, Ga. She was a retired owner and operator of a beauty salon. Survivors include two sons, Charles K. Calhoun Jr. of Sumter and John G. Calhoun of Savannah, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Gail Jones of Warner Robins, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Laura A. Calhoun, Allison B. Calhoun and Christopher Calhoun. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. VIRGINIA E. HUDSON

SUMMERLAND KEY, Fla. — Virginia Ellis Hudson, 82, widow of Robert Edward Hudson, formerly of Columbia, S.C., died Monday, May 15, 2000, in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. Born June 23, 1917, in Jacksonville, N.C., she was the only child of the late Lee Roy and Idell Raynor Ellis. Mrs. Hudson completed grade school and high school in Onslow County, graduated with a teaching degree from East Carolina Teacher’s College (presently East Carolina University) and did graduate work at both the University of North Carolina and Wake Forest University. For a short time, she taught in the public schools in Cove City, N.C., and in Alexandria, Va., at The Brown School. Her husband’s work with the JCPenney Co. allowed them to reside in many eastern states before moving to Columbia in 1957, where the family lived until retirement. They moved to Cudjoe Key, Fla., in 1979. She also had a real estate license. Mrs. Hudson was a care-giver, having opened her home to Columbia College girls after the Great Fire of 1964, providing residence for several while the dormitories were being rebuilt. She was a Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher. She had been president of the Levittown Women’s Club (New York) and president of the United Methodist Women at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, where she received a lifetime membership pin from the Women’s Society. She also served on the board of directors for Venture Out Resort in Cudjoe Key, Fla. She and her late husband were members of the Summit Club and Forest Lake County Club. While living in Florida, she was a member of Big Pine United Methodist Church. Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Lynne Bozard of Manning, Sandra King Fitts of Lugoff, Denise Raynor McGirt of Orlando, Fla., and Deborah Anne Davis of Redington Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Leesburg Road, Columbia, with the Rev. Dr. James Carl Adams officiating. MANNING — Susie Tindal Johnson, widow of Matthew “Bush” Johnson, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at her home. Born March 21, 1915, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Russell Tindal Sr. and Phosia Bethune Tindal. Mrs. Johnson attended Clarendon County public schools. During her youth, she was a member of Friendship AME Church. After her marriage, she joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church. She was a member of YWCA Lodge No. 34 and served as treasurer. Survivors include three sons, Leroy Johnson and Larnell Johnson, both of Manning, and Larry Johnson of New York, N.Y.; four daughters, Sadie Sowell of Manning, Betty Heyward of Bronx, N.Y., Gloria Thames of Dorchester, Mass., and Phosia McCray of Paxville; six brothers, James Tindal of Bronx, N.Y., Russell Tindal Jr. and Stewart Tindal, both of Queens Village, N.Y., Woodrow Tindal of Belle Rose, N.Y., John Marion Tindal of Lanham, Md., and Edward Richburg of Wilmington, N.C.; seven sisters, Lottie Roberts of Paxville, Rovena Moorer of Bronx, N.Y., Sarah Glaspie and Gracie Davis, both of Wilmington, N.C., Margie Witherspoon of Manning, Jean Felder of Sumter and Elizabeth Riley of Paxville; 54 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph Johnson and Matthew Johnson Jr. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Paxville with the Rev. BISHOPVILLE — Annie Amerson Keene, 95, widow of Albert Keene, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late William D. Amerson and Sibbie Smith Amerson. Mrs. Keene was a member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville. She was a retired store clerk. Survivors include six nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Bishopville, with the Rev. Dale Warren officiating. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery. Homer “Jim” Jefferson Lacy Jr., husband of Pat J. Lacy, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at his home. Born Dec. 12, 1923, in Hagerstown, Md., he was a son of the late Homer J. Lacy Sr. and Maud Heard Lacy. Mr. Lacy was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with 20 years service. He retired from RAF Lakenheath, England, in 1972. He served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was the golf course manager at Shaw Air Force Base. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Stuart Lacy and wife, Amy, of Monroe, Wash., and Gary Lacy and wife, Tracie, of Sumter; a daughter, Candace Roberts and husband, Todd, of Shaw Air Force Base; a brother, Jim Lacy of Maugansville, Md.; a sister, Peggy Spickler of Harrisburg, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Bret and Alexandra Lacy. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Burger. Memorial services with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. LYNCHBURG — Tomorris Justin Miller, 20, died Friday, May 12, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born March 1, 1980, in Lee County, he was a son of Robert Lee Dingle and Barbara Miller. Mr. Miller attended Mt. Pleasant High School in Elliott. Survivors besides his father and mother, both of Lynchburg, include his fiancee, Tresa Townsend of Alabama; his stepfather, Frederick North of New Jersey; two brothers, Edward Harrison of Columbia and Shervin Miller of Newark, N.J.; two sisters, Brittany Miller of Lynchburg and Mary Harrison of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and his maternal grandmother, Fannie Harrison of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jeremiah J. Miller. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Matthew AME Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. S. Gary, pastor, officiating. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Wash Miller, 60, husband of Aprille Johnson Miller, died Friday, May 12, 2000, at Hospice of Northern Virginia. Born July 26, 1939, in Horatio, S.C., he was a son of Rebecca Rivers Miller and the late Gregg Miller Sr. Mr. Miller attended Sumter County, S.C., public schools. He was employed as a farmer in his youth. At age 18, he moved to New Jersey, and was employed as a brick mason for 20 years in Asbury Park, N.J., with the Laborers Local 343. On Feb. 2, 1982, he moved to Washington, D.C., and was employed as an asphalt raker for P.G. Contractors. Survivors besides his wife of Washington, D.C., include two sons, Wash Miller Jr. and Tyrone Bazille, both of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Michelle Bazille of Washington, D.C.; seven brothers, Gregg Miller Jr. of Mt. Holly, N.C., Thomas Miller Sr. of Sumter, S.C., Ernest Miller of Temple Hills, Md., Charles Miller of Horatio, S.C., Glenn Miller of Asbury Park, Gerald Miller of Beaufort, S.C., and Clyde Miller of Rembert, S.C.; four sisters, Janie Murry and Binkey Reynolds, both of New Haven, Conn., and Curlie Waiters and Marilyn Williams, both of Horatio, S.C.; a stepson, Albert Quiovers; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew Miller. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at Willow Grove AME Church in Horatio with the Rev. Vernon Dixon officiating. Martin T. Nance, 30, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Miami, Fla., he was a son of Jeffrey Lee and Valirie Blouin Earley. Mr. Nance was employed as a roofer. Survivors besides his father of Manning and his mother and stepfather, Ralph Early, of Sumter include a son, Ryan D. Whiteford Nobles, 61, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Conway, he was a son of the late Gordan Bob Nobles and Lula Roberson Nobles. LENOIR, N.C. — Jesse E. Poarch of Ravenwood Drive, 89, husband of Hazel Bush Poarch, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 23, 1910, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Hugh L. and Julia E. Hollars Poarch. Mr. Poarch was retired from Bernhardt Furniture Industries,. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, G. Howard Poarch of Lenoir and Michael D. Poarch of Mt. Holly; a daughter, Clara Jean Mahaffey and her husband, James Mahaffey, of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Edna Pearson of Lenoir; eight grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Horace Poarch, Donald Poarch and Ralph Poarch; and six sisters, Artie Poarch, Martha Price, Bertha Holden, Clara Poarch, Ethel Pritchard and Myrtle Bryant. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Lawrence Bennett Jr., 38, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the Medical University of Philadelphia Hospital. Born July 29, 1956, in Summerton, S.C., he was a son of Lawrence Bennett Sr. and the late Irene Scott Bennett. Born March 31, 1911, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Eddie Jones and Bertha Perry Jones. Mrs. Davis attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined Mulberry Baptist Church and later she joined St. Peter Baptist Church. Survivors include seven daughters, Marie Polite, Mary Ingram, Rose Lee Tomlinson, Martha Bradley and Virginia Hargrove, all of Sumter, Azalee Green of Florida and Louise Parker of Norwalk, Conn.; three brothers, Romeo Jones of Baltimore, Md., Hardwell Jones of North Carolina and Bill Jones of Maryland; three sisters, Elizabeth Prince, Alice Beckum and Margaret Jones, all of Sumter; 39 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Purdy Davis Jr.; and five brothers, David, John Adam, Neal, Doc and James Lee Jones. Mary Lou “Mamie” Davis, widow of Emanuel Davis Sr., died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 28, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Maggie China Brunson. Mrs. Davis was an active member of Beulah AME Church, where she was involved in the church school, gospel choir, usher board, ladies club, lay organization and women’s missionary society and served as a class leader. Survivors include five sons, the Rev. Emanuel Davis, John Davis, the Rev. Larry Davis, Robert Davis and William Davis, all of Sumter; a daughter, Geneva Brunson of Sumter; two foster children, Ernest and Ceilie Yates, both of Sumter; four brothers, William Brunson of Jacksonville, Fla., Walter Brunson and Archie Brunson, both of New Haven, Conn., and Theodore Brunson of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Lillian Greenwell and Martha Corbin, both of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel, Ellie and Wallace Brunson; and a sister, Beulah Ray. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Beulah AME Church with the Rev. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Daniel Ervin Lee and Sue McAlister Warren. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, Billy Ellison of Wedgefield; a daughter, Catrina Ellison of Wedgefield; her mother and stepfather, Richard L. Warren Sr., of Wedgefield; her father and stepmother, Lois Lee, of Manning; three brothers, Richard L. Warren Jr. and Tommy Warren, both of Wedgefield, and Daniel Ervin Lee Jr. of Manning; three sisters, Jenny Warren of Wedgefield and Brenda Lee and Ashley Lee, both of Manning; her maternal grandmother, Mamie Lee of Sumter; a great-grandmother, Susannah Welch of Sumter; and her step-grandparents, Thomas and Bonnie Warren of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Calvin Nesbitt and the Rev. Andy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home, 1320 Cricket Drive, Wedgefield. MANNING — Harold Glenn White, 51, died Monday, May 15, 2000, in Manning. Born Oct. 25, 1948, in Manning, he was a son of the late Joseph D. and Thelma Barnes White. Mr. White was a Vietnam War U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include a son, Joseph White of New York, N.Y.; and two brothers, Steve H. White of Paxville and Milton D. White of Manning. Memorial services with full military honors will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating. RICHARD I. KOLB

PINEWOOD — Richard Irvin Kolb, 83, husband of Corinna Virginia Strange Kolb, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Silas B. Kolb and Lena Barwick Kolb. Mr. Kolb was a member of Pinewood Baptist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired automobile salesman after 50 years of service. Survivors besides his wife of Pinewood include a son, Richard M. “Butch” Kolb of Sumter; two daughters, Virginia Nowell of Olive Branch, Miss., and Ethel Slater of Pinewood; a brother, Herbert Kolb of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Kolb and Leroy Kolb; two sisters, Margaret Touchberry and Mary Ethel Barwick; and a granddaughter, Corinna Lynn Kolb. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Pinewood Cemetery with the Rev. Bennie Barwick and the Rev. Russell Strange officiating. COLUMBIA — Lillie Mae Bloss Reed, widow of Junior Reed, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Providence Hospital. Born Nov. 29, 1918, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Loman and Josephine Kendrick Miller. Mrs. Reed attended Sumter County public schools. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior and gospel choirs, single women’s ministry and senior missionary. Survivors include five sons, Jerry Reed of Jenkinsville, William Reed of Rembert, Joseph Reed of Bishopville, David Reed of Lugoff and Marion S. Reed of Sumter; two daughters, Edith Brown and Laura R. Patterson, both of Camden; five sisters, Irene Miller of Long Island, N.Y., Alice Gilliam of Richmond, Va., Sarah Smith of Roxboro, N.C., Mattie Reid of Glassboro, N.J., and Ruby Singleton of Philadelphia, Pa.; an aunt, Martha Ann Walker of Camden; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Perry Reed. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Union Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Willie Dennis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Edith R. Brown, 107 Cool Springs Drive, Camden. BISHOPVILLE — J.C. Shannon, husband of Diana Shannon, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born May 28, 1955, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Ralph Shannon Sr. and Bird Ann Blakeney. Mr. Shannon attended Lee County public schools. Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, Sherman Shannon and Conrell Shannon, both of Bishopville, and J.C. Caldwell of Bishopville; an adopted brother and his wife, Willis and Brenda Holloman of McBee. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Cypress United Apostolic Church cemetery in Bishopville with the Rev. Ralph Singleton officiating. The funeral procession will leave at 3:30 p.m. from the home of his wife, 200 Hopkin Road, Bishopville. The family will receive friends at the home of his wife. MANNING — Joan Elizabeth Davis Steele, 57, wife of Samuel E. Steele Sr., died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. Born Aug. 30, 1942, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Melvin Davis and Pearl Standfield Davis. Mrs. Steele was a retired bookkeeper and floral designer. She was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church and a member of the Beuclare Chapter 20 Order of the Eastern Star in Sumter. Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, S. Eugene Steele Jr. of Alcolu; a daughter, Tammy Cornwell of Sumter; a sister, Mary Ann Shands of San Antonio, Texas; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at Home Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hall officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Murray Geddings, Dickie Thompson, Pete Thames, Gilbert Hudson, Wayne Watts and McDowell Geddings. Honorary pallbearers will be members of her Sunday school class at Home Branch Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the home, Route 1, Box 720, Manning.
