WILHELMENA B. McCLANAHAN

Wilhelmena Bates McClanahan, widow of Arthur R. McClanahan, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at 3960 Ramsey Road. Born June 24, 1914, in Barnwell, she was a daughter of the late Wheeler and Jessie D. Bates. Mrs. McClanahan was reared in a Christian home and became a member of First Baptist Missionary Church in Sumter in her youth. She attended Sumter public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. She attended Morris College and later San Jose City College in San Jose, Calif., where she studied nursing. She resided in New York, N.Y., for several years and later moved to California, where she spent the major portion of her adult life. She subsequently returned to her roots in her community and her church in Sumter. Survivors include a son, Arthur J. McClanahan of Sumter; eight grandchildren, Saundra Mack and Diana and Krystal McClanahan, all of Sumter, Cassandra Lee and Latasha Tarleton, both of Hilton Head, William Butler Tarleton of Denver, Colo., and Arthur Conyers and Naton Tarleton, both of Hilton Head; a host of great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, William Butler “W.B.” Tarleton Jr. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Missionary Church, 219 S. Washington St., with the Rev. Dr. W.S. Randolph officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Arthur J. McClanahan, 3960 Ramsey Road, Sumter. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Terre Mosier Padgett, 35, wife of David Padgett, died Thursday, March 9, 2000. Born May 5, 1964, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of John and Annie Mosier. Mrs. Padgett was a member of Englewood Baptist Church. Survivors besides her husband of the home and her parents of Charlotte, N.C., include a son, Joshua Padgett of the home; a daughter, Morgan Padgett of the home; a sister, Janis Mosier Neville and her husband, James, of Charlotte; her grandmother, Vera Abernathy of China Grove, N.C.; her nephews, Jimmy Neville of Charlotte and Daniel Padgett; her nieces, Leah and Tara Neville, both of Charlotte, and Ashley Padgett, Catherine Gregory and Gracie Beard; her parents-in-law, Buddy and Mary Padgett of Lexington, S.C.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Steve and Donna Padgett of Lexington; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Lynn and Neil Beard of Columbia, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Englewood Baptist Church, Englewood Drive, with Charles Taylor, Robert Beamon and Joe Tanner officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove, N.C. PHILLIP W. PITTS

LEXINGTON — Phillip Wayne “Phil” Pitts of 3975 Mineral Springs Road, 66, husband of Rosemary Neff Pitts, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000. Mr. Pitts was a son of the late Luvie and Estelle Nichols Pitts. He was a graduate of Bay County High School in Panama City, Fla., and he was a Korean War U.S. Marine veteran. Mr. Pitts was employed by Woolworth Company and was later transferred to West Columbia. He formed a construction company, “Style-Mart Homes” in Sumter, and was also a partner with T&N Fiberglass and Carolina Fence. He had various businesses in Charleston and Folly Beach until his illness. He was an avid golfer and member of Hidden Valley Country Club. He loved to shag and make people laugh, and his wonderful witty sense of humor was contagious. Survivors besides his wife of 43 years of Lexington include a son and daughter-in-law, Philip W. Pitts Jr. and Ellen Cook Pitts of Lexington; a daughter, Janice Ann Pitts of West Columbia; a brother, Luvie E. Pitts of Eutawville, Ala.; a granddaughter, Courtney Ann Cannady of West Columbia; and a number of other relatives. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home. DALZELL — Jeffery Lynn Powell, 46, husband of Kimberley Chenoweth Powell, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at his home. Born in Springfield, Ill., he was a son of Clarence Williard Powell and Nora Leona Campbell Powell Honn. Mr. Powell was an electrician and a Vietnam War U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter, his father of Hayworth, Ill., and his mother of Dalzell include three children, Zachary Powell of Sumter, and Derek Powell and Matthew Powell, both of Mattoon, Ill.; and two sisters, Connie Benenhaley of Dalzell and Cindy Lou Stone of Oklahoma. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Florence National Cemetery in Florence with the Rev. Tim Outlaw officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carson Benenhaley, 3165 Peach Orchard Drive, Dalzell. Gerald Anthony “Shaw Dawg” Shaw, husband of Stephanie Wilson Shaw, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Aug. 4, 1968, in Sumter, he was a son of Robert Lee Isaac and Lillie Mae Shaw. Mr. Shaw attended Sumter County public schools. He was a member of Sheppard and Tru Brothers Motorcycle Club. He was employed at Omni Chemical Co. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and his parents of Sumter include two sons, Andrew Lavar Singleton and Gykema “Taileek” Wilson, both of Sumter; 12 brothers, Sgt. 1st Class Willie Shaw of Ft. Hood, Texas, David Shaw of Atlanta, Ga., and Tony Shaw, Jacob Shaw Jr., James, Bobby, Roosevelt, Ernest, Charles, Melvin, Eartha Ray and Joe Isaac, all of Sumter; 11 sisters, Dolores Reynolds, Zakia Shaw, Katie McFadden, Barbara Shaw, Lila Brown, and Shirley, Lillie Mae, Frances, Rosa, Eartha and Diane Isaac, all of Sumter; and other relatives. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Pleasant Tindal Jr., 60, husband of Ann Tindal, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at his home. Born Oct. 23, 1939, in Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of Mary “Mitt” Brailsford Tindal and the late Pleasant Tindal Sr. Mr. Tindal was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton, S.C.. Survivors besides his wife and his mother include five daughters, Yvonne Tindal, Sharon Tindal, Linda Tindal, Wanda Tindal and Angela Tindall, all of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Ernest Lee Tindal of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Eartha Mae Gipson of Summerton and Beaulah Holliday of Miami, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Santee AME Church in North Santee, S.C., with the Rev. Silas Spann officiating, assisted by the Rev. Neolis Johnson Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. HEMINGWAY — Vivian Juanita Horne Feagin, 68, wife of Wallace E. Feagin, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, in a Georgetown hospital after an illness. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd I. Horne and Vernie Floyd Horne. Mrs. Feagin was formerly of Lake City, and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lake City. She attended Olanta High School and Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hemingway. Survivors besides her husband of the home include a son and daughter-in-law, Randall I. and Peggy Feagin of Alcolu; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela F. and Belton Musick of Hemingway; and four grandchildren, Brandon Feagin and Tammy Feagin, both of Alcolu, and Hunter Musick and Meridith Musick, both of Hemingway. Ida Eileen Lamb Johnson, widow of Hubert B. Johnson, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Normangee, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Dewitt Lamb and Susie Houchins Lamb. Mrs. Johnson was a retired teacher with San Angelo Parochial School Systems. Survivors include a son, Glenn Johnson of Manning; a daughter, Dorothy Johnson Todd of Venice, Fla.; three sisters, Sue Atkinson of Jonesboro, Ga., Ruth Fry of Gainesville, Fla., and Bertha Short of Panama City, Fla.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson. JAMES JOHNSON JR.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — James “Junior” Johnson Jr., husband of Grace Johnson, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at D.C. General Hospital. Born June 9, 1950, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late James and Lucille Johnson. Mr. Johnson worshiped at St. Peter AME Church in Lynchburg, S.C., as a youth and for a time worshiped at Victory Christian Center in Sumter, S.C., and at Free Gospel Deliverance Temple in Capitol Heights, Md. He attended the public schools in South Carolina and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School, where he excelled in baseball. He played several years in the semi-pro and minor leagues for teams in Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. He was employed for over 20 years in law enforcement and security. Survivors besides his wife of Washington, D.C., include nine sons, Paul, Darrell, Derrick, Jimmy, Tony, James, Antonio, Jalen and Michael; six daughters, Theresa, Yolanda, Serina, Betty, Jennifer and Lekesha; four brothers, David, Bennie, Bobby and Marcella; a sister, Eva Mae; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Brown; a sister, Betty A. Johnson; and his grandparents, Junious and Rosa Johnson and David and Nellie Commander. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter AME Church in Mayesville, S.C., with Pastor Lynn Smith officiating, assisted by the Rev. Kenneth Johnson, pastor of the church. Born Jan. 20, 1907, in Glenwood, Ky., he was a son of the late Carless Otice Webb and Lula Stuart Webb. Mr. Webb was a retired auto mechanic. He was a member of Santee Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, Paul A. Webb Jr. and Carlos O. Webb, both of Summerton; a half-brother, the Rev. James L. Webb of St. Matthews; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Bertha Williams Wilson, widow of Nathan Wilson, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late George and Allie Rogers Williams. Mrs. Wilson attended Lee County public schools. Survivors include a son, George Wilson of Richmond, Va.; five daughters, Genovia Davis, Essie Fuqua and Sadie Cooper, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Annie Wilson of Queens, N.Y., and Ruby Jefferson Tomeny; a brother, James Williams of Bishopville; two sisters, Flossie Smalls of Mayesville and Josephine Toney of Sumter; and 21 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, James Wilson and Mallie Wilson; a brother, Edward Williams; and three sisters, Patience Brown, Susie Williams and Mary Howard. PINEWOOD — Oregon Douglas “O.D.” Avin, 64, husband of Brenda Gardner Avin, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Orrie Avin and the late Nora McLeod Avin. He was a member and deacon of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. He was a retired building contractor and was an avid sportsman and fisherman. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Steve Avin of Sumter and Olin Avin of Tallahasse, Fla.; two daughters, Christine Nettles Welch of Turbeville and Lisa Nettles of Sumter; three brothers, Wayne Avin and Buford Avin, both of Sumter, and Louie Avin of North Augusta; six sisters, Evelyn Wells, Lela Pritchard, Rosalee Griffin, Juanita McDaniel and Dianna Geddings, all of Sumter, and Hilda Glava of Klamath Falls, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie L. Avin. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Lynn Hill and Tony Sanders officiating. Henry T. McElveen, 84, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Benny T. McElveen and the late Mary Estell Welch McElveen. He was a member of Faith Outreach Assembly Church and was retired from Korn Industries. Survivors include two sons, Johnny L. McElveen and Ray T. McElveen, both of Sumter; two daughters, Patricia Byrd of Sumter and Mary Poston of Cherryville, N.C.; one sister, Rosa Lee Warring of Sumter; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Henry T. McElveen Jr. and Paul McElveen. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Faith Outreach Assembly Church with the Rev. Carrie Lee Archie, wife of Willie Sinkler, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 2, 1956, in Orangeburg, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Lottie Archie. Mrs. Archie attended Sumter County public schools. She was affiliated with Bethel AME Church. She was employed for many years by State Roofing Company. Survivors besides her husband of the home include two sons, Troy and Stacy Archie, both of Sumter; two daughters, Carolyn and Tracy Archie, both of Wedgefield; three brothers, Sonny Lee Archie, Marion Archie Jr. and Coulie Archie, all of Sumter; four sisters, Betty Felder of Orangeburg, Laura Summers of Brooklyn, N.Y., Minnie Archie of Atlanta, Ga., and Doretha Archie of North Carolina; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Henry Archie; and two sisters, Lucille Archie Pee and Mattie Mae Archie Green. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. J. McCray delivering the eulogy and the Rev. L.W. Walker Jr. presiding. EFFINGHAM — Virginia Elizabeth McElveen Brooks died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Betty McFadden McElveen. Mrs. Brooks attended Florence County public schools. She was an active member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the gospel choir, missionary society, usher board, deaconess and pastor’s aide society. She was also a member of Willing Worker OES Chapter No. 330. Survivors include nine children, Marian Burgess of Capital Heights, Md., John Brooks Sr., Diane Brooks, and Betty Eaddy, all of Friendfield, Mary Williams of Mitchellville, Md., Robert Brooks of Quincy, Fla., Sammie Lee Brooks of Pamplico, Cachelia Brooks of Kettering, Md., and William H. Brooks of Maryland; a sister, Lillie Bell Gamble of Lake City; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Green’s Funeral Home in Lake City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Rona Baptist Church, Friendfield Road, with the Rev. BISHOPVILLE — Deacon Joe Charles Sr. of 23 Moses Road, widower of Carrie Brown Charles, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden. Born Oct. 3, 1936, in Lee County, he was a son of the late George and Bertha Charles. Mr. Charles attended Lee County public schools. He joined Elizabeth Baptist Church in his youth, where he served as a deacon, vice-chairman of the deacon board, and president of the gospel choir. He also was president of Ionia Community Christmas Club and a member of Lucknow No. 324 Masonic Lodge. He was a supervisor for Wilson Brothers Construction Co. Survivors include two sons, Joe Charles Jr. and George Charles, both of Bishopville; five daughters, Joyce Harry of Plainfield, N.J., Diane Perkins of Lakewood, N.J., Melissa Hoyte of Crossfield, Tenn., Lisa Charles of Bricktown, N.J., and Sheila Charles of Bishopville; a stepdaughter, Helen Brown of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Adlean Moses of Bishopville, and Bertha Rivers and Alma Gray, both of Summerdale, N.J.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a special friend, Pearlie Wilson of Bishopville. MAYESVILLE — Clarence Legrand “Blue” Gibson Sr., wife of Pattie J. Gibson, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 14, 1919, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. Jacob and Rosa Thames Gibson. Mr. Gibson was a member of Ebenezer AME Church, where he served as a member of the trustee board. He retired from Korn Industry in Sumter, where he received the Distinguished Employee Award for having perfect attendance and being on time for over 15 years. Survivors besides his wife of 58 years of Mayesville include four sons, George R. and William Gibson, both of Mayesville, the Rev. Malachi Gibson of Sumter and James D. Gibson of Washington, D.C.; four daughters, Julia R. Williams and Wilhelmena A. Washington, both of Timmonsville, and Jessie P. Washington and Irene E. Gibson, both of Mayesville; two brothers, James Gibson of Mayesville and Alfred Gibson of Akron, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Legrand Gibson Jr.; five brothers, Porter Gibson, Willie Gibson, Marion Thames, Johnny Brunson and Jacob Gibson; two sisters, Ella Mae Carter and Gladys Plowden; and a granddaughter, Pamela Washington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer AME Church in Mayesville with the Rev. Leo Chapman Jr. officiating, assisted by Presiding Elders Robert L. McCants and Allen W. Parrott, and the Revs. Vermell Humes, Timothy Johnson and Irene Anthony. Burial will be in Mayesville Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter, and at other times at the home on Wilson Street in Mayesville. ANNETTE McCUTCHEON

SCRANTON — Annette “Cookie” McCutcheon, 38, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Atlanta, Ga. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of Rosa Lee McCutcheon and the late Alfred McCutcheon. She was a 1979 graduate of Lake City High School, and she also graduated from Florence-Darlington Tech. She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Scranton and Southwest Congregational Church in Atlanta, Ga. She was employed by Atlanta Department of Corrections as office manager. Survivors besides her mother of Scranton include her son, Kelvin McCutcheon of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Richard McCutcheon of Florence; two sisters, Alfer McCutcheon of Lake City and Wendy McCutcheon of Columbia; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Believers Holiness Convention Center in Coward with Elder Mack Singletary officiating. Burial will be in Lee Cemetery in Scranton. Green’s Funeral Home in Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

MATTHEW O. RAMSEY

Former educator and athlete Matthew Orlando Ramsey, widower of Sarah Amanda Davis Ramsey, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at his home. Born Aug. 23, 1912, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Frederick D. Ramsey and Lucy Rich Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey attended Enon Baptist Church and served faithfully in many capacities including as a Sunday school teacher, chairman of the trustee board and church clerk. He was a graduate of Morris College High School, and he received a bachelor’s degree in education from Morris College. He received a master’s degree in education administration from Columbia University Teacher’s College in New York. He completed further studies at Hampton University, Temple University and the University of South Carolina. He began his teaching career in Mullins, where he also coached boys football and baseball. In Sumter he was principal of Green Elementary School, Savage Glover Elementary School and Bates Junior High School. After retiring from Sumter School District 17, he returned to Morris College as a teacher, and at the time of his death, he was professor emeritus in the division of education. His educational career was interrupted by World War II, and he served his country in the U.S. Army and received two bronze medals and the World War II Victory Medal prior to being honorably discharged on Jan. 20, 1946. Being a superior athlete, in 1988 he was inducted into the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1989 he was inducted into the Morris College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, a commander of the American Legion and a former member of the Sumter County Planning Commission. Survivors include a daughter, Matthette Ramsey Williams and her husband, Plummer D. Williams, of Denville, N.J.; a brother, Hosea Ramsey of Sumter; two sisters, Geneva R. Ball of Sumter and Beatrice L. Lewis of Bishopville; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel Ramsey, Fred Ramsey and Elijah Ramsey; and two sisters, Mary Ramsey and Martha R. Smith. An Omega service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the O.R. Reuben Chapel at Morris College with Dr. Luns C. Richardson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Thomasina M. Portis, the Rev. Dr. J.O. Rich, the Rev. Stanley Hayes, the Rev. Dr. T.O. Everett and the Rev. Dr. Edna C. Jenkins. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be the Rev. Courtney Canty, Everett Thompson Jr., John Ramsey, Cortez Thompson, Lorenzo Bowen, Lt. Col. Wayne Q. Williams and Derenander Porters III. Honorary pallbearers will be administrative associates of Sumter School Board No. 17, Wheeler Matthews, James Stover, Bobby L. Matthews, Eli Baker, Joe Kervin and John Edens, and members of the Gamma Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Flower bearers will be members of Enon Baptist Church Missionary Ministry and the Sumter Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. The casket will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at the home, 1109 Manning Road. Memorials may be made to the Matthew O. BETHUNE — Jerry D. Roach, 58, husband of Taphina B. Roach, died Thursday, March 2, 2000. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Luther and Mary Collins Roach. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. He was employed at Kendall Mills for 28 years. Survivors besides his wife of Bethune include three daughters, Debbie Ratterree of Bethune, Cindy Marshall of Hartsville and Lynn Branham of Bishopville; a brother, Willie Roach of Bethune; two sisters, Marlene Terry and Carolyn Mooneyham, both of Bethune; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Saturday at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Watts Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Glenn Geriomon Turner of 3580 E. Alexander Road, Apt. B-2005, 23, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Las Vegas. Born March 31, 1976, in Manning, S.C., he was a son of John Turner Sr. and Gloria White Turner. Mr. Turner was reared by his maternal grandmother, Alvertuis White Humes. He attended the public schools in Clarendon County, S.C., and Manning High School. He was employed in Las Vegas as a correctional officer at Indian Springs Prison. Survivors besides his father of Williston, Fla., his mother of Fayetteville, N.C. and his maternal grandmother who reared him, Albertuis W. Humes of Manning, include four brothers, Ronald Turner, Emmanuel W. White, Terrence W. White, and Chris Turner, all of Fayetteville; two sisters, Monica S. White and Micandra W. White, both of Fayetteville; and his paternal grandparents, John and Lula M. Turner Sr. of Williston. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Chapel Baptist Church, Highway 260, in the Jordan community of Manning, with the Rev. L.W. Walker, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Thomas H. Bell Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. REMBERT — Jesse Washington Sr., husband of Annie G.D. Washington, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Providence Northeast Hospital in Columbia. Born Aug. 28, 1923, in Lee County, he was the son of the late McCullum and Ethel Herriott Washington. Mr. Washington committed his life to Christ in his youth and served in various capacities, including as a Sunday school teacher, historian of the Wateree Baptist Association Lower Division, clerk emeritus of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and Wateree Baptist Union Lower Division and deacon emeritus of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. He attended Sumter County public schools. He received a bachelor’s degree from Morris College and completed his master’s degree at Columbia University in New York. His professional career included serving as a classroom teacher, assistant principal and principal. He retired as principal of Rafting Creek Elementary School in 1985 after 36 years of service in Sumter School District 2. He served as a member of the board of trustees of Sumter County School District 2 and was a lifetime member of the NAACP. He was the recipient of awards from the S.C. Education Association, S.C. State Commission of Forestry and the S.C. Association of School Administrators. Survivors besides his wife of Rembert include three sons, Jesse Washington Jr. of Columbia, A.J. Washington of Rembert and Carlton B. Washington of Columbia; a daughter, Gwendolyn Yvonne Richardson of Columbia; four brothers, Malvertis Washington of Fredericksburg, Va., Ernest Washington of Pensacola, Fla., McCullum Washington of Beaufort and Johnnie Washington of Silver Spring, Md.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Anthony Taylor, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Willie Dennis, O.S. Scott Jr., C. Allen Faulk, Blakely N. Scott III, O.S. Scott Sr. and Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Bernice Ballard Williams, widow of Robert Williams Sr., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 9, 1925, in Horatio, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Julia Ballard. Mrs. Williams attended Sumter County schools. She was a member of High Hills Baptist Church, and later joined Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert. Survivors include three sons, Robert Williams Jr. and Andrew Williams, both of Rembert, and Benjamin Williams of Temple Hills, Md.; three daughters, Ida Evertt of Bronx, N.Y., Martha Dennis of Rembert and Geneva Pemberton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Edward Ballard of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Elveta Curtis of Horatio; 18 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Phillip, Robert and Nelson Ballard; and five sisters, Stephanie, Nina and Elma Ballard, Jessie Bell Johnson and Ida Gardner. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church, S.C. 261, Rembert, with the Rev. Charles H. Davis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home, 6951 Camden Highway. The family will receive friends at the home.
