Virgie Lee Parry, widow of Gerald Parry, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at his home. Born April 3, 1928, in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Archie Durant and Everett Osborn Suggs. Survivors include a son, John Parry of Sumter; two sisters, Earl Lee McKenzie of Sumter and Audrey Parry of Beach Island; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Carl Parry; a brother, Lamar Suggs; and three sisters, Ara Suggs Feagin, Polly Murphy and Lavieu Suggs. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Melton officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Leo Church of God Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home. Bullock Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

RONALD PERKINS

BISHOPVILLE — Ronald Perkins, husband of Angela Reddick Perkins, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, after an extended illness. Born Aug. 25, 1962, in Bishopville, he was a son of Robert Perkins and the late Mary Alice Perkins. Mr. Perkins was a member of Bishopville Church of Christ. After he graduated from Bishopville High School, he joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged for health reasons. He was employed by the City Nursery. Survivors besides his wife of the home and his father of Bishopville include three sons, Jiaray Donte’ Perkins, Laron Perkins and Benardo Perkins, all of the home; a daughter, Jasmine Nicole Perkins of the home; four brothers, Edward Pompey of New York, N.Y., and Robert Perkins Jr., Kelvin L. Perkins and Gavins Bracey, all of Bishopville; and a sister, Cindy N. Perkins of Bishopville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Perkins; and a sister, Hope Perkins. A wake service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Boatwright Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bishopville Church of Christ with Minster B.J. Barr officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m., from the home, 513 S. Lee St. The family will receive friends at the home. MARY J. SIMON

Mary James Simon, widow of Presley Simon, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East. Born Dec. 10, 1902, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Williams James. She professed Christ in her youth and was a lifelong member of Congruity Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two sons, Henry Simon and Walter Simon, both of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Bertha Simmons and Mazie Illery, both of Baltimore; 75 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and 36 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six children, seven brothers and seven sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Congruity Presbyterian Church USA with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, moderator, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday. TURBEVILLE — Roberta Sims, 75, widow of Harold Eugene Sims, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at her home after an illness. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley McKenzie and Effie Driggers McKenzie. Mrs. Sims attended Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include two sons, Wesley Eugene Sims of Scranton and Johnny Gene Sims of Turbeville; seven daughters, Alberta Baird of West Columbia, Betty Jean Mims of Timmonsville, Ruby Lee Smith of Scranton, Marie Lee and Tammy Matthews, both of Turbeville, Shirley Ann Jones of Pamplico and Daine Tucker of Manning; two sisters, Ruth Olsen of Turbeville and Letty Floyd of Sumter; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening at the home. Rebecca Johnson Williams, widow of David Williams, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 1, 1914, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Isiah and Martha Johnson. Mrs. Williams was affiliated with the Heard AME Church in Roselle, N.J., where he served as a member of the senior choir and Stewardess Board No. 2. She was employed at St. Elizabeth Hospital for many years until her retirement. Survivors include a daughter, Alice Myers of Sumter; two sisters, Alice Johnson of Dalzell and Willie Mae Jenkins; a stepdaughter, Corine Nero of Newark, N.J.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Julia Sanders presiding, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson. Burial will be in Cooksfield Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. The funeral procession will leave at 1:20 p.m. from the home of Alice Myers, 560 W. Foxworth Mill Road. MIAMI, Fla. — Esther Dozier Dupree Carter, 76, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at South Miami Hospital. Born May 1, 1923, in Clarendon County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Luther Dozier and Lily Plowden Dozier. She was first married to the late Moses Dupree. BALTIMORE, Md. — Barbie “Bobby” Davis died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at his home in Baltimore after an illness. Frances Lucille Richburg Lowder Blackmon, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at a local nursing facility. Born of French Huguenot ancestry at Davis Station in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William DeWitt Richburg and Annie Vermell DuBose Cutter Richburg. For much of her life she was a Methodist, but in her later years she became a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She was first married to the late Scott Randall Lowder, and then to the late Woodrow Wilson Blackmon. Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy L. Lowder of Sumter; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, Randall DeWitt Lowder and William Scott Lowder; a brother, Johnny A. Cutter; and three sisters, Annie Louise Richburg Blackmon, Mamie Cutter Morris and Lovelle Cutter Barwick. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Baynai officiating. Lillie McCullum Bostic, wife of Albert Bostic, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Hopewell Healthcare Center. Born Aug. 10, 1927, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Roxie Scott McCullum. Mrs. Bostic attended Sumter County public schools. She worked as a housekeeper until her retirement. Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Jimmy Bostic of Charlotte, N.C., and Raymond Bostic of Sumter; four daughters, Christine McCullum Burgess and Gail Bostic Washington, both of Sumter, and Sherell Bostic Summers and Roxie McCullum, both of Charlotte, N.C. two brothers, Preston Willis of Bridgeport, Conn., and George Willis of Jersey City, N.J.; a sister, Georgianna Willis of Bridgeport; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Compton Jr. and his wife, Linda Compton, of Okeechobee; six daughters, Norma Ruth Compton Leadingham of Limestone, Fla., Ava Dannell Stefanick of El Granada, Calif., Victoria Lee Hucker of Landenberg, Pa., and Barbara Jean Hatfield, Margaret Seymour and Brenda Sharpe, all of Columbia; two brothers, Ellis Berry of Ashwood and Howell Berry of Little Mountain; four sisters, Joye B. Born in Pittsfield, Wis., she was a daughter of the late Oran Shoemaker and Edith Helen Penny Shoemaker. Mrs. Ellis was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a retired home missionary and a retired bookkeeper. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include three sons, Lawrence Ellis, Rodney Ellis and Martin Ellis, all of Sumter; a daughter, Beverly Liken of Philadelphia, Pa.; four brothers, Lowell Shoemaker of San Antonio, Texas, Roy Shoemaker of Taylorville, Ill., Russell Shoemaker of Phoenix, Ariz., Warren Shoemaker of Kohoka, Mo.; three sisters, Peggy Howard of Iowa, Alice Ortel of Freemont, Calif., Kathleen Parkin of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. BISHOPVILLE — Mary Martha Pressley Scott, widow of James Scott, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. She was a daughter of the late Mose and Hattie Worley Pressley. She attended Lee County public schools. Mrs. Scott was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Elliott, where she served for many years in various capacities. Before her retirement, she worked with the cafeteria staff in the Lee County public school system. Survivors include three sons, Willie James Scott, Sam Scott and William Dan Scott; five daughters, Mary Harriott, Ruby Henry, Doretha Fortune, Lucy Anderson and Lillian Green; a sister, Maude Johnson of Bristol, Pa.; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. OLANTA — Evelyn Miles Sullivan, 88, widow of Ansel W. Miles, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Ridgle and Luereeny Parker Ridgle. Mrs. Sullivan was a homemaker. She was a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include a son, O’neal Miles of Sumter; two daughters, Bonnie Welch of Turbeville and Marie Smith of Sumter; two sisters, Beatrice Disher of Cartersville and Florina McClam of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four children, Buster Miles, Wilbur Miles, Virginia Prosser and Velma Godwin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel. Wesley Wactor, widower of Katie English Wactor, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 22, 1904, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Alice Wactor Jenkins. Mr. Wactor attended Sumter County public schools. He was a member of Mt. Olive AME Church, where he served as treasurer of the trustee board, usher, class leader, and as a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. He was the oldest father of the church. Survivors include eight sons, Thomas, Willie, Grover, Joseph, Sam, Jimmie and Samuel Wactor, all of Sumter, and James Wactor of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Susie Jenkins of Washington, D.C.; 52 grandchildren; 104 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olive AME Church with the Rev. T.A. Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. T.J. Slater Sr. and the Rev. Roberta S. Wilson. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. Members of the Woodrow Elite Club will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Twelve Tribes of Israel will serve as flower bearers. CARSON, Calif. — Curtis O. Black, husband of Virginia Black, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in California. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of Vivian Geddings Black and the late Clyde J. Black Sr. He was a retired longshoreman. Survivors include his wife of California; four sons, C.O. Black, Mike Black, Paul Black and Tim Black, all of Carson, Calif.; three brothers, Clyde J. Black Jr. of Ridgeway and James C. Black and L. Marshall Black, both of Manning; a sister, Betty Black Geddings of Dalzell; and nine grandchildren. GRANITEVILLE — Hodge “Ben” Lee Benenhaley Jr., 58, husband of Joyce Toole Benenhaley, died Friday at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Hodge Lee Sr. and Sallie Ann Benenhaley. He was a cook for Bobby’s Barbecue for the past three years and served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of the U.S. National Guard for 17 years. Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Chrystal Williams of Kannapolis, N.C.; two sons, James and Jodie Benenhaley, both of Rock Hill; a stepdaughter, Karin Gourley of Huber Heights, Ohio; two stepsons, Keith Gilman of Springfield, Ill., and Terry Gilman of North Augusta; four sisters, Betty Buckner, Judy Buckner, Kathy Marinko and Jessie Lee Benenhaley, all of Sumter; four brothers, Robert Benenhaley of Gloverville, and Elvin Buckner, Leon Benenhaley and Samuel Buckner, all of Sumter; and 10 grandchildren. MAYESVILLE — Aslee Noon Epps Burgess, 78, widow of James Burgess, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born September 10, 1921, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Neola McFadden Epps. At an early age, she joined the Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Turbeville. After marrying, she joined the Melina Presbyterian Church and later became a minister of St. Peter AME Church. She attended public schools in Clarendon County. Survivors include five sons, Willie James Burgess, Alonzo Burgess, Levern Burgess, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Alphonso Burgess and Raymond Montgomery, both of New York; five daughters, Mary McCray, of the home; Minnie Ford and Martha Taylor, both of Sumter, and Rebecca McFadden and Johnnie Mae Pearson, both of New York; a brother, Tony Epps of Salisbury, Md.; a sister, Carrie Lee Moses of Baltimore; 29 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jasper and Robert Burgess; a daughter, Ola Lee Burgess; three brothers, Willie, John and Eel Epps; and three sisters, Lizzie Epps Johnson, Mary Epps Hills and Minnie Epps Moore. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter AME Church in Mayesville. The Rev. Francis Dennison will officiate, assisted by the Revs. Kenneth Johnson, Donnie McBride and Friendly Gadson. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Monday. Burial will follow at the Melina Presbyterian Church cemetery. Family will receive friends at the residence, 126 S. Main St. in Mayesville. Job’s Mortuary, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DORIS E. WILSON

MANNING — Doris Ealey Wilson, 66, wife of Willie Wilson Sr., of Route 2, Box 464, in the Foreston community of Manning, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an extended illness. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Zura Ealey. The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Willie Wilson Jr. and Joann Wilson, Route 5, Box 5-X, J&E Road. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

WILLIE BELTON

COWARD — Willie Belton died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born Oct. 10, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Sam David Belser and Louise Moore Belser. Mr. Belton attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a farm helper. Survivors include a son, Willie J. Belser of Miami, Fla.; nine brothers, Henry Belser and Charlie Belser, both of Summerton, Elijah Belser and James Parker, both of Charlotte, N.C., Thomas Williams of Newark, N.J., Henry Parker of Norwalk, Conn., James Belser of Sumter, Booker Tee Belser of Davis Station and Moses Belser of Bartlow, Fla.; and five sisters, Laura Johnson and Sarah Lowery, both of Summerton, Minnie Briggs of St. Matthews, Mary Boatwright of Sumter and Rosa Childs of Bartlow. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Summerton Funeral Service with the Rev. Neolis Johnson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery in the Panola community. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his sister, Laura Johnson, P.O. Box 10005, Washington Street, Summerton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of his sister, Laura Johnson. Summerton Funeral Service in Summerton is in charge of arrangements.
