CHARLESTON — Annie Bell Kelly Blyther, widow of Andrew Blyther, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital. Born June 30, 1928, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Jack Kelly and Rosa Lee Phillips Kelly. Mrs. Blyther accepted Christ in her youth and joined Orangehill RMUE Church, where she remained a lifelong member. Survivors include a son, Matthew Kelly of Sumter; four daughters, Ruth Choice, Dorothy Maple and Jannie Kelly, all of Sumter, and Ann Sierson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother, President Kelly of Sumter; two sisters, Essie Mae Parker and Carrie Hunter, both of Columbia; 21 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Kelly; and two sisters, Julia Kelly and Amelia Murray. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Orangehill RME Church in Wedgefield with the Rev. Thomas Junious officiating, assisted by the Rev. Isaiah Sierson. Burial will be in Orangehill Church Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Janie Kelly, 2625 Lorentz St., Sumter. The family will receive friends at the same home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES P. BRYAN

FLORENCE — James Paul Bryan of 4223 Live Oak Circle, 67, husband of Dorothy Ann “Dottie” Ballard Bryan, died Thursday morning, Jan. 13, 2000, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Born in Denver, Colo., he was a son of the late Paul Dewey and Margaret “Peg“ Peck Bryan. Mr. Bryan was a Korean War U.S. Navy veteran. He received a B.S.N. degree from the University of Alabama in 1958. He retired in 1997 after 40 years as a registered nurse for the S.C. Department of Mental Health. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a 32 degree Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies. Survivors besides his wife of Florence include a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy B. and Richard Wininger of Florence. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at their home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 305, Columbia, SC 29204. ORABELL CLARK

CLINTON, Md. — Orabell “Jolly” Clark, 86, widow of James “Buster” Clark, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000. Born Dec. 2, 1913, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Blanche Butler Sharper. In her youth she joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Later she joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She relocated to Washington, D.C., where she joined Greater New Hope Baptist Church. She served in many capacities, and her greatest love was serving as a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Rose of Sharon No. 1. She escalated to all houses, and the Daughters of Isis is where she worked most diligently. Upon returning to Sumter, she rejoined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Franklin D.R. Clark of Temple Hills, Md.; a sister, Hattie S. Rice of Sumter, S.C.; a foster sister, Helen Robinson of Mayesville, S.C.; three aunts, Addie B. Rush of Sumter, Richmond B. Danney of Baltimore, Md., and Pearlean C. Butler of Elloree, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James Wilson; and two brothers, Charlie and Jimmy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie A. Wright Jr. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. Trustees and deacons of the church will be pallbearers. Missionary ladies of the church will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 10:40 a.m. from the home of her sister, Hattie S. Rice, 829 S. Main St., Sumter. MABLE C. DINGLE

Mable Carter Dingle, widow of Remus Dingle, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000. Born Jan. 26, 1927, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Deacon John Carter and Lillie Jennings. Mrs. Dingle attended Sumter County public schools. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the senior choir and pastors aide auxiliary. Survivors include eight sons, William Dingle and Emmanuel Dingle, both of New York, Samuel Dingle of Long Beach, Calif., Capt. Percy Dingle of Charleston, Henry O’neal Dingle, Henry Moiese Carter, Timothy Donald Dingle and James Carter, all of Sumter; four daughters, Bertha Green of Hinesville, Ga., and Alma Mack, Betty Smalls and Dorothy Tisdale, all of Sumter; three sisters, Daisy Keith and Rovena Grant, both of Dalzell, and Alice Brown of New York, N.Y.; 24 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, a granddaughter and a son-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Chapel at Shaw Air Force Base with Chaplain Major Willie Dicks officiating. Grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers. The funeral procession will leave at 12:20 p.m. from the home, 173 W. Oakland Ave. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

PAMELA G. GAINEY

Pamela Gail Gainey, beloved daughter of Jack Gainey and the late Mildred Gainey, departed this physical life into God’s loving care on Jan. 13, 2000. Pamela is survived and deeply missed by her father of Sumter; two brothers, Jack Gainey and his wife, Robin Gainey, and Mark Gainey; three sisters, Belinda Gainey, Deborah Higgenbotham and her husband, Thomas Higgenbotham, and Karen Gainey; two nieces and seven nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell Eric Gainey. A private immediate family graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Karen Renee Gainey, 2031 Winterberry Road, from 4 to 6 p.m. today. Flowers may be sent to her home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge.

LEROY GRAHAM JR

LYNCHBURG — Leroy Graham Jr, husband of Cynthia Clavon Graham, and formerly of Florence, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence after an illness. Born Jan. 24, 1954, in Florence County, he was a son of the late Leroy Graham Sr. and Queen Ester Timmons Graham. Mr. Graham attended Florence County public schools and was a graduate of Southside High School. He was employed by Palmetto Tire Company for 17 years. He lived in Florence for a number of years and later moved to Lynchburg where he was employed by National Dye Company until his death. Survivors besides his wife of the home include five children, Leroy Demehius Graham, Karess Graham and O.J. Graham, all of Florence, and Earl Lighty Jr. and Keisha Lighty, both of the home; a sister, Mary Brown of Darlington; a grandson, Mikel Graham; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Graham and Charles Graham. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant AME Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. Davie Brown officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robbie Gabriel and Minister Larry Clavon. Burial will be in Carter Cemetery in Effingham. Jefferson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LYNCHBURG — Lawrence Lowery, widower of Marion Louise Lowery, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born Oct. 14, 1917, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Thomas Lowery and Sarah Goodman Lowery of Lynchburg. Mr. Lowery joined Asbury United Methodist Church in his youth, and he was a member of several organizations in the church. He attended Lee County public schools and was employed as a farmer. Survivors include two sons, Calton J. Lowery of Timmonsville and Thomas M. Lowery of Temple Hills, Md.; a daughter, Linda Isaac of Lynchburg; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and an adopted grandson, Lawrence Lowery. He was preceded in death by a son, Calvin Lowery. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Cousar officiating. Burial will be in Goodman Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 10:15 a.m. from the home of his daughter, Linda Isaac, 154 Ike Wright Road, Lynchburg. BARBARA A. OLDEN

Barbara Ann Olden died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 3, 1953, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Gertrude Brown Olden and the late Marcus T. Olden. She attended New York City public schools and did further studies at Sumter Area Technical College in Sumter, where she received a degree as a nurses’ assistant. She was a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church. Survivors besides her mother of Wedgefield include a son, Jamall Tea Olden of the home; a daughter, Natasha Lameya Olden of the home; a brother, Marcus Olden Jr. of Wedgefield; and a sister, Gloria Dargan of Wedgefield. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Wayman Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Frankie D. Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Wayman Chapel Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Members of the missionary society of the church will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. from the home of her mother, 250 Praylou Road, Wedgefield. The family will receive friends at the same home. JAMES H. RIDGILL

AKRON, Ohio — James Henry “Booker” Ridgill died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Akron General Medical Center following an extended illness. Born May 15, 1931, in Manning, S.C., he was a son of the late Henry A. and Martha Gibson Ridgill. Mr. Ridgill attended the public schools in Clarendon County, S.C., and Akron, Ohio. He served his country during the Korean War and was a member of VFW Post No. 3618. He was first married to Edith McClurkin Ridgill and to this union a son, James Armstead Ridgill, was born; and then to Faye L. Malone Ridgill, and to this union a son, Bart Malone, was born. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, James A. Ridgill of Adrian, Mich., and Bart Malone of Akron, Ohio; seven sisters, Amanda Brazelton of Columbus, Ohio, Ruby Bramlett, Alma Strong and Manzie Ridgill, all of Akron, and Patsy Mitchell, Sandra Williams and Gwendolyn Edwards, all of Cleveland, Ohio; three brothers, Matthew Ridgill and Kenneth Ridgill, both of Akron, and Castine Ridgill of Manning, S.C.; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Wesley Temple AME Zion Church in Akron.

MARGARET C. WHITE

REMBERT — Margaret “Sweet” Carroll White, wife of Marshall White Jr., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at her home. Born in August, 1927, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Ben Carroll and Eunice Josey Carroll. Mrs. White was a member of Union Baptist Church. Survivors besides her husband of the home include two sons, Willie A. White of Rembert and Anthony S. White of Sumter; five daughters, Ruth Wilcox of Tampa, Fla., Eunice Diop of Brooklyn, N.Y., Louise Fergerson and Ann Goodwin, both of Rembert, and Shirley Boykin of Lugoff; five sisters, Maggie Dewar of Durham, N.C., Lula Bell Tucker, Mary Lee Brantley and Anna Johnson, all of Tampa, Fla., and Eunice Clark of Eatonville, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Columbus, Ben Jr., Jessie, James, George, Willie and Joseph Carroll; and three sisters, Ruth Stuckey, Ethel Glover and Ella Holiday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Union Baptist Church in Rembert. The family will receive friends at the home, 6470 Springhill Road, Rembert.

JAMES M. WILSON

BISHOPVILLE — Commander James McClintoch Wilson, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Mr. Wilson was a son of the late Robert Hampton and Thursey Arnette Kemp Wilson. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Md. He graduated from Bishopville High School and the University of South Carolina and received a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina. At the University of South Carolina, he was president of his class, a member of Blue Key and the German Club, and he was listed among the top 10 members of his class. Mr. Wilson was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, of which he was president and later district president and interim national secretary. In Columbia, he was a member of the Bachelors Club, the Tarrantella and a founding member of the Saraband Club and “The Empty Arms.” He was active in the Jaycees and a charter member and chairman of the board of First Richmond Sertoma Club. He joined the Navy in 1940, attended Mid-Shipman School in New York City and was an instructor there on Dec. 7, 1941. He spent the entire World War II era in the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean on the U.S. Tenacity (PG-71, formerly HMS Candy Tuff), working convoys all over the Indian Ocean, in places like Murmansk, USSR, and Bombay, India. Later he served a year in Brazil as a naval observer and as an aide to the commandant of the 5th Naval District. His last command was as C.O. of the USS Wise. He received three letters of commendation and three battle stars. Survivors include a brother, L.L. Wilson of Bishopville; 17 nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bishopville Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Dr. Willis Gaines Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to Bishopville Presbyterian Church Cemetery or Organ Fund of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Md. Norton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIE S. YORK

MANNING — Willie S. York, husband of Rebecca H. York, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born Sept. 8, 1947, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Mazie Thompson York and the late William York. Mr. York was a graduate of Manning Training School. He attended Catonsville Community College in Baltimore, Md. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army with a tour of duty in Vietnam. After his military career, he was employed by the Baltimore Police Department. He was a member of Holly Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the trustee board. He was also employed by Georgia Pacific for 13 years. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, Ronald York of Sumter and Maurice York of Jackson, Tenn.; a daughter, Angela R. York of Manning; a brother, Raymond York of Manning; 12 sisters, Lottie Mae Mack of Thomasville, N.C., Laura Plowden of Sumter, Mae Sejour of Japan, Helen York, Evelyn Edwards, Priscilla Pee and Katherine York, all of Columbia, Carrie York, Cynthia Y. Pearson, Rachel Abraham, Betty O. York and Christine Billie, all of Manning; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie James York. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Bloomville with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Davis, the Rev. J.H. Pringle, the Rev. Alma King and the Rev. Mary Bethune. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the chapel of Fleming-Delaine Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 712 Evans St. Fleming-Delaine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HAMMIE WILSON SR

MAYESVILLE — Hammie Wilson Sr. died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 23, 1946, in Lee County, he was a son of Sadie Carter Wilson and the late James Wilson, and the husband of Hattie Smith Wilson.
The family will receive friends at the home, and at the home of his mother.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

ELIZABETH RICHARDSON

Elizabeth Richardson, widow of Henry Richardson, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at her home.
Born June 6, 1926, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Vaughn and Pearl Lewis Vaughn.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Betty Mack, 19 Brand St.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

COLUMBIA — Julia Pearson Curtis, widow of Jesse Curtis, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born March 23, 1920, in Lee County, she was a daughter of Haynesworth and Rosa Spann Pearson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Jessie Mae Colman, 820 N. Main St.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

Robert Davis, husband of Annette Rouse Davis, died Jan. 4, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born March 14, 1957, in Sumter County, he was a son of Eugene and Viola Davis.

HARRY E. KENNEDY

MANNING — Harry Ervin Kennedy, 81, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 15, 1918, in Manning, he was a son of the late Thomas Muldrow Kennedy and Alma Frazier Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy retired from B.C. Moore’s Department Store after 50 years of service, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post #68, and a member of Manning United Methodist Church. Survivors include a niece, Genie Hodge of Manning; a nephew, Jimmy Kennedy of Huron, S.D.; a great-niece, Mary Beth Owen of Chapin; and two great-nephews, Jamie Hodge of Manning and Patrick Kennedy of Belmont, N.C. Three brothers, James M. Kennedy, William A. Kennedy and Thomas L. Kennedy, all preceded Mr. Kennedy in death. Services were held at 2 p.m. today at Manning United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Adams and Van Thomas officiating. Burial was in Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were Woodrow Rhame, Kenneth Holladay, Jack Singletary, Marion Hill, Ben DeWitt, and Kenneth McCord. Honorary pallbearers were the Men’s Bible Class of Manning United Methodist Church. The family is receiving friends at the home of Winston and Genie Hodge, 448 Manchester Drive. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice in Sumter. WEDGEFIELD - Arthur Eugene Hooks Sr., 59, husband of Dianne Privett Hooks, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Mullins, he was a son of the late Arthur Lee Hooks and Annabell Driggers Hooks. Mr. Hooks was a self-employed truck driver. Survivors besides his wife of Wedgefield include two sons, Arthur Eugene Hooks Jr. of Wedgefield and Robert Ellington Lee of Morley, Mich.; four daughters, Sylvia Darlene Hooks and Wendy Tate, both of Birmingham, Ala., and Sherry Hooks Yow and Ann Marie Hooks, both of Wedgefield; three brothers, Joseph Hooks and James Hooks, both of Louisiana, and Bill Hooks of Columbia; and six grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Ives, Mike Jones, Keith Lowry, Chris Klee, Gene Lee and Frankie Jones Jr. The family will receive friends at the home, 5725 Squaw Valley Road. MANNING — Robert Francis Russell, 72, husband of Elaine Eucker Russell, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Nov. 18, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of the late Walter Frank Russell and Gertrude Alide Goodwin Russell. Mr. Russell was a retired supervisor for B.F. Goodrich in Avon Lake, Ohio, and was very active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton, and was an avid golfer with Clarence Golf and Country Club. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two daughters, Sandra Russell of Cleveland and Diane Dawsey of Manning; two sons, Robert Louth of Lompoc, Calif., and Jim Louth of Frederick, Md.; and three grandchildren. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton with Father Jerry Rysinski officiating. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice of Sumter. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SUMMERTON — Valrie Pearl Davis Pender, widow of Marion Hugh Pender, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000. Born Oct. 11, 1933, in Charlotte, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Claude and Opal Davis Davis. Mrs. Pender was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church in Manning. Survivors include a son, Allen Pender of Georgetown; four daughters, Nancy Shumaker of Andrews, Darlene Greenall of Paxville, Janet West of Pinewood and Beverly Burrows of Summerton; two brothers, Richard Davis of Summerton and Jimmy Davis of Kingstree; four sisters, Sylvia Ivey of Charleston, Joann Davis and Pat Stutts of Round-O and Brenda Simms of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at noon Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner officiating. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens, Manning. Pallbearers will be Alvin Hyman, Jimmy Burgess, Bill Anderson, Jerry Coker, Allen Pender, Travis Burrows, and Jason Pender.
